On Saturday the 21st of June, Challenge 4 will begin! Can you believe we are on the 4th challenge of the year? Half-way there, everyone! How do you feel you are doing? I know I’m not where I thought I’d be but I’m trying. Another way of looking at this is that it is now the second half of the year and a fresh start! Keep on going! The summer is always a great time to get exercise in because of the warm weather. Challenge 4 will run all summer until September 21st.

Weigh in days for Challenge 4 will be on Sundays. This is to coincide with the September 21st being a Sunday and when Challenge 4 ends. However, I know that people have their own weigh in days so you can weigh in on or before the Saturday each week.

Challenge 4 is now open for editing in the spreadsheet! Please fill in Column’s A,B & C to start with. I will update D after a couple of days. Then each week enter under the correct date. I will update Column R each week, so you don’t have to do anything with that one either.

Note on the spreadsheet:
As this is a yearly challenge, the spreadsheet will be used for the entire year. This means that there won't only be one worksheet in the spreadsheet. If you click into the spreadsheet, down below there are different worksheets. They read Challenge 1 - Completed!, Challenge 2 - Completed!, Challenge 3 - Current Challenge. When you are signing up for this challenge, make sure you add your name to the Challenge 4 worksheet. The spreadsheet will automatically open up on the Challenge 1 worksheet. (For those who join after the start date, Challenge 4 will be marked “Current Challenge”) This is all just to help my organisational issues ;)

How was everyone's first week?

One pound down for me. I am ecstatic for that and hope to keep up the momentum. I am sure a gain is headed my way (I am pretty consistent about gaining every 4 weeks) but with losses like this every week, little gains are easier to take. How are you doing?

Forkeeps: Thanks so much! :) I had a bit of a bigger loss this week, because it is my first week of really counting calories. I had been kind of watching what I ate for the past few weeks, but this was my first "taking it seriously" week. I'm not expecting losses quite like that again, but it certainly gives me motivation :)

Welcome to all those who joined since! I needed to get my act together, I feel like this challenge it's going to be different. I have a different frame of thinking the last few weeks. I've a wedding in October and I bought a dress for my regular size I wear and it's too tight. :( So it's an incentive for me to fit into it comfortably by October. Hope the second week is going well. :)

Dreamer2012 - My week isn't going well, but it is all my fault. I am putting the wrong things into my body. I was down to 146 at WI, and now I am up to 148! I gained everything and more that I lost last week. I am in my calorie range today and will stay in it. I will do this! I need to be where I should be for myself and my family. :smug:

Awesome. I would love to lose some weight over the summer. It will be a challenge as I am injured so exercise is limited at the moment but I am determined to get to a healthy weight.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in a week late. I just got back from 2 weeks out of the country. I was pleasantly surprised to see I hadn't gained weight on my trip. Now I'm ready to buckle down and get back to my healthy eating/exercise plan.

Ugh, hey folks. I just can't understand my body at times. Maybe if I type it out here, something will jump out at me that will explain it.

For the last few weeks I was steadily going down. Got down to 165.6 at the last "official" weigh-in. The following week I was a beast on the walking trail, 4 miles at a time almost every morning, with a couple 3-mile runs sprinkled in here and there. Then we went out of town for a couple days. Friday, I stayed at my calorie goal. Saturday, I was a little over (in fact, I don't think I even bothered logging dinner).

So Sunday morning comes along, and I'm up almost 2 pounds. I didn't panic, thinking it was the food from the day before.

Monday, up another 1/2 pound. Really? I change my calorie goal to be lower, and get back into the swing of my walking routine.

Tuesday, finally down a pound, but still a pound more than I was last week.

Then this morning, up again!! A little over1/2 pound! I can't understand it. Perhaps it's the extra cardio (though in truth it's not all that much extra). I am insanely thirsty lately, maybe I am dehydrated and my body is holding on to extra water? I usually don't weigh daily unless I have an unexpected loss on my "official" weigh in day. I'm not sure if these daily fluctuations are helping or hindering my mental state!

Anyway, sorry for the novel. Just ranting.

I hope everyone else is doing well. I see some great losses in your posts. Keep up the great work!!!

Sounds like water to me, Cindy. Whenever I'm excercising a lot, my weight loss is really infuriating. I'll stay the same or even gain a pound or two for a few weeks, then just lose 3-4 pounds all at once. If your calories are under control, then I'd just stick it out for a couple weeks and see what happens.

I agree with BigChief, sounds like you're holding fluid between your high level of exercise and a slight increase in calories over the weekend. In addition to water I think it's possible for glycogen in the muscles to be increased when one comes closer to maintenance calories than the previous deficit (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know much about this process).

So consider this a seconding of the suggestion to just stay the course for a couple weeks. You'll likely see a woosh or at least the scale heading down again. Consider other measures of success in addition to the scale as well: how are your measurements doing, clothes fitting, your athletic performance, hitting your goals as planned, overall feeling of well being, confidence in yourself, etc., whatever measures of progress are important to you.

Cindy - I am going through the same thing. I have been working out more lately and I am gaining weight. I know that it is frustrating!! I am going to keep going and see what happens after another week.

Thanks everybody. I guess after reading my mini-rant I realize I am overreacting. Have I said before what a mind-game this entire weight loss process is??? I do agree that it is probably water, and I agree that I should be looking at indicators other than the scale (like, perhaps, the fact that I'm now fitting into some SIZE 12 SHORTS!!!). The number shouldn't be so darned important, but for some reason it holds me in its power. ;-)

I am going back to my old calories (i.e., setting MyFitnessPal to "lose 1/2 pound per week" instead of 1 pound) and just keep drinking water and staying the course.

On another note, my little girl got up in the middle of the night, vomitting. She's done it a couple times and is now sleeping, My son had a stomach virus a few days ago too, so obviously it's going around in our household. Here's to hoping I don't get it either. I love seeing the scale go down, but not THAT way. :-(

Yikes! Poor kiddos...I really hope you can avoid it. I had a stomach bug a couple years ago. Coincidentally, that was the last time I was below 130. :) It was horrible though. I'm so happy I didn't pass it to my roommate. Best wishes for you staying healthy!

Weight is 250.5-- yikes. The good about the past week= I was on vacation at home in Michigan having a great time with the family. Did good the first week with watching what I was eating and exercise.
The bad = This past week everyone I came in contact with family and friends had too much good food around to eat and too tempting for me I guess. So I'm bummed out due to gaining 3.2 lbs back. I tried with the vacation but you all know how it can be....
The good for the future is I am back to my work in CA and I work pretty hard when working so pounds come off easily. And we have until Sept 21st for the final weigh-in -- yeah that helps. Keep all the good work and I'm back onto it!

Sorry been MIA lately. I have been working 6-7 days a week, and my scale died. So..... I bought a new scale & guess what??? I think working so much has been good for me. I have lost 4.7 lbs in the last couple weeks. This is the lowest I have been in over 2 years! I am so excited about that!

It's starting to look less and less likely that I'll lose 20 for this challenge. I'm thinking if I can maintain the 1.3 per week I've been averaging in this challenge, I'll be at 15 lost. I'll definitely not be disappointed with that. Really, any loss is a good one. :)

I should go back down to my recent lows tomorrow, but I am sincerely excited about dropping to new lows and am challenging myself to be in the 160's by the end of September. Those will be numbers I am sure that I have never seen in my adult life :cool:.

TOM chose today to visit, so I'm probably pretty lucky to be down a 1/2 lb. I'm hoping for a little post-TOM whoosh next week.

Really, it's hard to be disappointed with a 15 lb loss. I hate missing goals, but it wasn't for lack of trying. I'm thrilled that between this and the last challenge, I've lost 37.5 lbs. so far. :D

I have noticed Streudel and AAD are kicking it! Me, not so much. I am somewhat happy with 245.3 this week. Will keep pushing on....:)

Is anyone else sort of flabbergasted by the fact that there are only TWO challenges left to complete the year?? Insane! When did all that time pass??

Arghhhh I came so close to goal! I really am not disappointed at all, considering how my progress has slowed down since February when I began this journey. And also considering that I have swapped my cardio for strength training. I look and feel better than I ever have in my life, and so although the numerical goal doesn't match up, there is something much great in the works. :) And hey -- I STILL lost 16 pounds!!

Great progress, RiotGirl! 16 pounds is awesome!

Here is my progress. I was up and down and all over the place this time. At least I ended it a few pounds down, and I'm awfully close to the 150's which is exciting.

Well, I came darn close, only 2.5 away from goal. Between 2 challenges, I lost 40 lbs., so that's a win. :D

Great job everybody! :cp::cp: We should all be very proud of the weight we lost over the summer, or as I like to call it: BBQ, boardwalk, and carnival food season. :lol:

I haven't seen the new challenge posted, and sadly I haven't seen Dreamer 2012 in a long while, so I hope I'm not out of line, but I'd like to see if I can get the Google spreadsheet set up for the next challenge. Even if I can't get the spreadsheet going, we could still do the next challenge without a sheet if anyone's interested.

I know these challenges help me so much and I'd like to continue. What do you think, ladies?

Streudel: Congrats on the fabulous progress you made! That's inspiring.

I think it would be great if you could start the next challenge. Dreamer probably has something else going on right now in her life, I don't remember seeing her lately either. It happens to all of us.

Personally, I do not use the spreadsheet as I think it asked me to create a Google account and I have no interest in that. But I faithfully update my original post here every week (I don't tag it onto the end of the thread, but I suppose I could start doing that). You should start the new challenge. What is the time frame? Through the end of the year? Until Winter (Dec. 21)? Or maybe just through Halloween? I will sign up no matter what you choose. Let's do this!

Thanks Streudel for keeping the challenges going! I agree that these weekly weigh ins help to keep on track for at least slow steady weight loss for now.

Start of challenge =6/21 253 lbs

End of challenge = 9/21 245 lbs

Total wt loss = 8 lbs and I am happy with this :cool:
