Yesterday after my post I got up and did 50 sit ups, and this morning a mixture of push uPs (easy ones with a yoga ball), leg raises, squats, lunges and some arm exercises. I always thought I didn't have abs but this morning I know they are there, just hidden deep down, because I am sore. It is a good sore though. :) I have been feeling for a while now that I really want to start exercising, so maybe this is what my body needs to get me off my plateau. :) the laundry room is all rearranged for my treadmill, I just need to find the baggy with all of the screws...

Good morning beautiful IP friends! Even though we had terrible thunderstorms early this morning, even though the scale didn't say what I wanted, even though DH and I didn't agree on some things already today, it's a wonderful day to be abstinent and eating clean the IP way! I'm grateful for this day and another opportunity to eat 100% OP and work toward my goal that is a looooooooong way away.

Exercise...ugh. And I am a former runner. Have been doing Zumba Gold cardio for about 2 weeks now (2x/wk). Gives me the chance to "dance" without the jarring impact on knees and hips.

Hungry day today...I think the hormones from my fat are driving me crazy lately. I've been a lot more confrontational and I cry easy, I take more things personal, ug. I can't just blame it on the diet though. I started a new birth control method and I think I'm done with it after I get my period this month. Since hormonal contraception isn't always effective on this diet anyways.

Anyone else experience "hot flashes" kind of. Like your body is revving up your metabolism for a little while since starting this diet? (and only since starting this diet)

Kaylynt,

Though I don't experience them now when my weight loss is very slow, I certainly remember 'feeling the heat' when the bigger losses were happening.

A good 'knowing' that the fat was burning!

Keep going! It's a fab programme.

I've lost 27 pounds since starting IP and the first thing that has reduced? My Chest! Why?! No, I'm not really looking for an explanation - I'm just frustrated. My question is - I measured myself and have gone down a bra size. Should I down size my bras all at once? I was kind of thinking maybe get one and then see what happens, I don't want to waste a lot of money, but I've breast feed 2 kids. My ta tas need some support! Thoughts/Comments/Snide Remarks?

Serenity - I love your approach to the morning. I was just thinking something similar, that I love getting up in the morning and reading on this site because it gives me motivation to make this a good day, a 100% OP day. Great start....

No, your goal is NOT a loooooooooooooong way away. Your goal can be lots of little successes and milestones along the way. You can mark hitting 20% of your starting weight (soon!), hitting 250, losing 100 pounds, getting half way, passing into Onderland...Some of them are big milestones, some are just fun but they are all important.

I agree! Yesterday I desperately wanted chocolate. Fortunately I was on the highway with none around and I had time to talk myself out of it. I told myself that I will allow myself chocolate for one day when I hit 160 lbs. That seemed to appease my brain. Now I don't actually think I'll eat a bunch of chocolate when I hit 160 but that reasoning helped for the moment and it got me through the strong craving...

If weight loss success were to be judged by the loss of the "girls", I would be hugely successful since I have very little left since that is the first place that shrank.

But, that being said, I can fit into a size 10 jacket, admittedly snugly because of my upper arms, but the chest and waist are just fine. I cannot complain about that and I will never need to worry about the buttons looking pulled taut.

Now if I can get the bottom part to match size wise, I will be in heaven.

In regards to clothing, I would not go invest a whole lot in many bras, but treat yourself to a really nice one that reminds you every morning of why you get to have something nice and pretty. My feeling about it is that There will be plenty of time to invest in some more really great new clothing as you progress to where you want to be?

Thanks! My pants sizes are really weird I've noticed. I usually wear jeans with some stretch to them, but I have a pair that have almost NO stretch to them and they are size 16. My stretchy pair is size 14 and they are loose. I just bought some leggings size L/XL and they are going to be too loose with a couple of washes. So I ordered some size Medium leggings, they have not come yet, but at least if they are tight, they will soon NOT be!! I just bagged up all my XL tops and well I'm going to donate them because I am forever out of that size! :D:carrot:

Echoing the 'like, like, like'!

I have lost and regained weight many times. It has been a life long struggle. Maybe it is aging, maybe possibily maturity ( :^: ), I more deeply appreciate the importance of connecting with the lots of little success along the way.

Yes, there is a goal of reaching and maintaining a certain specific weight, but I sense an 'appreciative' shift. The goal now is self-care. Done well, one of the side effects will be weight loss/maintenance.

Lisa's words which I read early on in this journey resonated for me (this isn't an exact quote): 'I have come to understand that I have a chronic condition. It's called obesity. And my work is to manage it.'

Somehow this takes away the usual self-imposed pressure of 'rushing' to reach a destination (the 'I want to lose this much weight by this specific date') and turns this more into a journey of 'learning how to manage myself more effectively.'

Embracing the lots of little successes and milestones is a way of celebrating the realisation of that bigger goal: effective self- management.

sending love,
Annik

Day three has so far been the hardest. I woke up with my body aching and hungry and haven't been able to shake the hunger in spite of having the IP pudding, cup of black coffee, tea, and about 24 ounces of water. :(

Had a little boo-boo last night - took a half dose of NyQuil because of my allergy issues and didn't think to look at the label. High fructose corn syrup - I'll know to watch for it now.

Hopefully the day will improve as it moves forward.

Darn that NyQuil, that corn syrup will get you every time.

You are on the right track with tea and water. Maybe try some chicken broth--hey it worked for our grandmothers.

Here's hoping you start feeling better soon.

Jsorrell, pickles help suppress my appetite. I'm not sure what your days are filled with, but when I get hungry I avoid the kitchen and go out and run errands. I don't keep snacks near me at my desk-all in the back. So I really have to be motivated or starving to get up and make the conscious effort that I need it. Usually I don't. On Saturdays I love to go to the mall and try on nice clothes. It gives me motivation and keeps me away from snacks. I don't buy the nice clothes because they won't fit for long so it's great motivation to get to my goal!

Isn't it amazing how the "grass is always greener"? Those of us who have 'em don't want 'em and those who don't, want 'em.

I had a reduction in '99 and am still bigger than I prefer. My surgeon told me at the time that the people who are happiest with surgery results are the reduction gals!

Our lives might not always be going the way we want but I can usually find a reason why things are "okay" today.
Your goal is closer than you think

Even if it takes a year or more, you'd be that much older anyway, but now you'll be that much older and smaller, too!!!!

I have lost and regained weight many times. It has been a life long struggle. Maybe it is aging, maybe possibily maturity ( :^: ), I more deeply appreciate the importance of connecting with the lots of little success along the way.

Wow. I've had to totally develop more patience with the weight. This morning I was totally amazed that even tho I'm not at goal yet, the same clothes fit me now that fit me back in the Fall when I put my summer clothes away. And my summer clothes from last summer still fit! This is totally new territory for me. I've dropped weight and regained countless times. Learning to maintain is new. And when my body is ready, the rest of the weight will come off. :) IT IS ALL GOOD!

And you're right. I said I have the disease of obesity and it is my responsibility to keep it in remission. It will return if I let it.

I am getting scared of Monday... What if I don't lose anything? I have tried WW, i have tried Atkins, Slim Fast and that stupid scale would NOT budge. I don't feel any different. I was only feeling crappy on days one and two. Today I feel normal... Not hungry. No bad breath, no loose pants...what if the scale says 0 loss? I will cry. I have tried hard... Following the protocol to a T. Has anyone Not lost anything on week 1?

"Its undeniably true that there are disadvantages to losing weight not eating as much as you want, whenever you want, having to watch portions, not eating or drinking the same things as other people may be, but its important to compare those to the advantages of losing weight better health, improved self-confidence, increased mobility, better quality of life (in so many ways), etc. Ask yourself: which is more important to me?"

To that I wish to add, the same "disadvantages" will exist in maintenance. For anyone pining away for certain items they'll be able to eat when they get to goal, remember, that weight can come back if we aren't diligent.

Someone told me recently, "But I don't want to have to be on a diet my entire life". Well guess what? We are. We can be on a diet that is good for us or bad for us but the food we consume is our diet!

So last night I stopped by a store to pick up stamps and I swear I thought I was going to get attacked by huge Lindt Chocolate Bunnies. I could actually smell them and had visions of devouring one on my way home from the store. Gross, I know. Instead I bought a nice expensive tea and felt slightly sorry for not being able to eat them, but just for a moment, as I stepped on the scale this morning and had a woosh since since yesterday :D

Lisa,

well said. There is a reason that I grew to be more than 100 pounds overweight. An IP ie, low carb/moderate protein way of life is now something I look at as liberation from the slavery of carrying the equivalent of 4 - 30 pound containers of cat litter with me everywhere I go (try it or just trying carrying one of two even for 5 minutes -- you'll get a meaningful picture of what extra weight does to our bodies).

So there are some foods I will never go back to... ever. A friend who is currently in an alcohol rehab centre says they are being taught not to look at recovery as having to give up alcohol for the rest of their lives but instead, simply to work at avoiding the first sip.

It's a mentally smaller project to avoid one sip than it is avoiding alcohol for a whole life.

The first sip or the first bite -- some things I just can't go back to ever if liberation is important to me. I look at it as divorce from the foods that are unhealthy for me. Some people may be able to eat freely with no consequence. Because of my chronic condition, I can't. It is a plain and simple as that. May sound extreme but then carrying more than 100 pounds of extra weight is extreme in itself.

Sharing this post from Maile in the Maintainer's Thread ... lots of wisdom here. She has been maintaining her 112 pound loss now for 2.5 years:

Something Happened on When the Rest of Us Were Making Excuses

“…You did it—you lost weight and have kept it off. And it was so easy for you.”

A co-worker said this to me today. Initially, I shrugged it off, became embarrassed, but then I realized—she’s kind of right. I did do it; but she’s very wrong about it being easy.

I work in an environment with many women who, every January 1, pledge that they are going to eat healthy/exercise/join weight watchers. They go full steam for a few weeks, then by the middle of February, they’re right back to where they started because they didn’t stick to it. A few of them have managed to lose a great deal of weight over a period of time, only to gain it all back quickly. And then the excuses kick in. It makes me sad to watch.

What I’ve done differently is to stick with my healthy eating, which means saying no to take out lunches, and sticking with my lunchtime walks, even in below zero temps, snow, ice and rain. It means spending time on the weekend to plan and prepare healthy dinners for during the week, so I have time after dinner to exercise. It means having a plan in place to keep up the exercising/eating when I’m away on vacation. It’s making the decision to change my life and then sticking to it. It’s deciding that my health and well being is more important than the momentary satisfaction of eating a donut.

Of course, I can’t tell her any of that; she won’t understand until she is truly committed to making the lifestyle changes herself. We all get to that point, and then the magic really happens. If only she had really listened to her own words, she would realize that she already knows that excuses don’t work, action does.

The thing about losing weight and maintain the loss is that there is no end date or finish line. I realize that it’s something I will have to work on and think about for the rest of my life. The best part is that, at least for me, it no longer feels like work; it has become fun and something I look forward to. I get excited about trying new healthy foods that I most likely never would have tried before. Exercise has become my something I love to do; it’s respite, my stress reducer, and some days, my punching bag.

While the journey has definitely not been easy, it has been very, very rewarding. So I guess I did do it…but there is always more work to be done. __________________

This was exactly me! I swore I didn't loose anything, I was just destined to be big, I really didn't feel thinner ...well I got on the scale at the clinic and was down 9 pounds! Your feelings tend to lie to you, stick to the plan and the weight will come off!! :)

I felt the same way!! I am on Day 11 and I was miserable the first 4-5 days! I remember getting on the scale on Day 5 and I had lost one measly pound! I was ready to quit and head to McDonald's. I got on here and posted about my struggle and got some incredibly amazing words of support and encouragement. I was reminded that this plan WILL work if I just trust in it and relax. My first weigh-in came, and I was down 6.6 pounds! Hang in there...it will work. And, by the way, I never had any typical signs of ketosis (still don't!), but obviously, I am losing weight. Checking in here and reading every day has helped me so much with the mental part of starting this plan!

Hang in there...you CAN do this!

Billy - the reason you feel "normal" today and not hungry is that you probably ARE in ketosis. Those are good indicators of it, especially after two days of feeling "crappy".

I promise you, if you are following the plan 100% you will see the number on that scale go down on Monday. It may be a big number, it may be a small one, but it will be down and that's all that matters.

And by golly, you better get your butt on the Daily Chat pronto that day to tell us all about your fabulous loss!

Hi TBird: try 1/2 a pkt of stevia in your 10-12 oz mug as it is VERY sweet. I don't use it myself but I know a few who do and they don't seem to have a problem with that amount of packets.

Keep on keepin' on...:bravo:

I drink several cups of tea a day with stevia and I like to add it to my pre made chocolate pudding. It doesn't seem to effect my losses at all. Just check the labels if you buy the powder. One brand I bought had one carb per packet... I found other brands where the carbs are zero.

I think the law is in Canada that if something is less than 1 g per serving, it can be marketed as a zero carb.

Trouble is that somethings are .95 g carb/serving ... so having too many a day can add up. This is the reasoning behind the limitation on Walden Farms products. Even though they can legally be marketed as 0/0/0, there still may be some residual carb or fat or sugar...

hello everyone,
This is Donna and I am on IP diet day 2. Surprisingly Day 1 was far better and I didn't have as many headaches but today I feel worse. I have been having constant headaches and feeling weak.
Took the IP peach and mango shake this morning and tomato basil soup for lunch.
I am feeling depressed that if I am doing it right and if I am ever going to reach my goal.
Anyone in the same boat as me.

hang in there, keep going -- these are signs that your body is responding and starting to cleanse itself of the stuff that's been getting in the way of weight loss. First week = the worst. Short term pain for long term success (not gain ... success!) If you stick to the programme, you will reach your goal.

Keep reading as many of the threads here as possible. Lots of good information, lots of wisdom and lots of support. You are not alone on the journey!

I use keto-stix (you pee on them and they show if you peed out ketones, which means your in ketosis) every morning to prove to myself I'm in ketosis. Maybe you'll want to try it, if you don't think this diet is working. If your in ketosis your most likely losing weight.

I went to dinner on Day 5. Had steamed broccoli and zucchini (asked for NOTHING else on it) and a piece of steak (asked to be cooked with spices ONLY). The waitress was super accommodating with my instructions. Part of taking the fear out of eating out or away from home is planning. I had already looked up the menu and decided what I was going to eat and how I would ask for it cooked.

I ate out ALOT on P1, I spent 2 weeks traveling across South America and stayed 100% on plan so it's very easy. I've never had waitstaff that was anything but accommodating. Ask for what you want, steamed veggies with no butter, grilled fish or meat with no fat or just olive oil. Water with lemon, shrimp cocktail with no cocktail sauce, just fresh lemon or lime. You can do it, promise.

sounds good. What about the extra lettuce that they wanted us to take?
I am travelling to other location for 2 days and I should have 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 1 dinner with them.

What other options do we have breakfast and lunch if we cannot follow IP diet for a day or two?

I am really, really, really hoping that tomorrow will come and this ketosis flu will be over. During each afternoon of my three days on IP, I feel so tired, a little light-headed, and just all-over yucky. I had my salad with 1.5 ounces of chicken at noon so that I could save my IP packet for 2:30 and still feel like I am starving and low-blood sugar-y. Of course, I am trying to keep with the three packets (breakfast, lunch, and snack) instead of four, so maybe I should just plan on an extra tomorrow if necessary.

Let's hope it'll be over by tomorrow! If it is, I will be shouting from the rooftops.
Right now, I could really go for a nice, well-seasoned and seared steak. :D

Even if you are on P1 you can ask for lightly stirfried veg for lunch and bring your own soy sauce, hot sauce or AC vinegar in a tiny tupperware container. For your protein - mix up a Peach Mango or Pina Colada IP drink in your shaker and have that after your veg while they are all having drinks or coffees.

For breaky I'd suggest an eggwhite omelette if available with no cheese, toast or hash browns of course, but a few veg in it for interest sakes.

It will still keep you close to plan without feeling like you can't participate in the meal at all. Other options are IP pudding for dessert at lunch after your stirfried veggies, bringing your own tupper container, and just having your IP drink for breakfast with your coffee or tea.

Liana
I did a condo ski vacation with dinners out on Phase 1 for a week - no problem. If you don't get all excited and nervous about it no one else will notice. :stress: lol

Extra lettuce is just a filler if you feel like you are starving, not necessary. If you want you could ask for whole romaine leaves from the kitchen with your lunch and fill them with the stirfried veg & your own sauces and make Lettuce rollups/tacos. If you feel you need more food.

Hang in there, JS... this first week can be a killer, make sure you are drinking enough to clear out the toxins stored in your fat, and make sure you are taking ALL of your vitamins and your salt to keep from getting bad headaches. You may find yourself feeling like TOM because excess estrogen is stored in our fat and when it is realeased, WHAM! Cranky weepiness and bizarre spotting or an early period are not uncommon.

It does get better and fairly quickly! Think about your wonderful 1st Weigh In to come!

Actually, it is very easy to IP on the road...as suggested egg white omlettes with a few IP OK veggies are a "no brainer"...and lunch salad with extra IP compliant veggies .... and a protein drink on the sly if you are not into sharing this journey with your companions...no one will be the wiser...!! Dinner is something that is also easy to stay within the rules for. Just remember to keep your portions small so you do not exceed about 100 calories at breakfast and lunch..ask for no sugar or carbs in preparations....

When I had to eat this way during a few out of town family emergencies...I usually lost more than anticipated...I was always hoping to just stay "sideways.." as Avalon would say!!!

JS, I am positive things will get better for you! Hubby and I made the mistake with liquid cold meds, too... Then we started checking labels, especially when I needed cough drops to be able to teach without coughing my head off! I hope your allergies let up a bit, too.

Anyone else experience "hot flashes" kind of. Like your body is revving up your metabolism for a little while since starting this diet? (and only since starting this diet)

No, I actually have had the opposite. I was always too warm before, and warm weather was my nemesis! Now, I am sooo cold! I cannot wait till summer weather arrives! The tip of my nose gets freezing and almost turns purple. Crazy!

Definitely get measured properly and get one or two bras that fit. I got mine off the clearance rack. That way, you can wear them while you're in transition and have proper support. Keep in mind, your band size is shrinking along with possible cup size shrinkage. And don't be frustrated! You are doing so great!

Deep breaths, and keep in mind all that everyone has said so far. Stressing out can hinder your weight loss, so take a step back and trust the program. It works! The weight was put on over time, so it is not going to come off as fast as we would wish (that would be nice), but it WILL come off if you stick with it! Good luck!

So true! If we were eating as much as we wanted whenever we wanted, it is no surprise that we need to lose weight! No one should eat like that, no matter what their weight may be. It is just not healthy. This plan trains us to eat what we should eat and allow for occasional indulgences, something that our society does not encourage.

Sharing this post from Maile in the Maintainer's Thread ... lots of wisdom here. She has been maintaining her 112 pound loss now for 2.5 years:

Thanks for sharing this! She is truly living what she has learned on this program. This is what we need to strive for.

You have gotten some good advice about this. Get a plain steak (no butter or oil), or even a burger with no bun. Grilled chicken or rotisserie chicken would work. Ask for extra veggies, no oil or butter. Many restaurants will accommodate your requests.

Hi, all! Happy almost Friday!

So, I have read on here about the various cheat dreams that some IP'ers have had. Well, I had some really weird food-related dreams last night-TWICE! Both dreams took place in Vegas. First, I was with my cousins who plan to renew their vows there in October 2015. Someone had ordered a bunch of cheesesteak subs to be delivered to the room, and I took one, kinda smooshed it a little so it would be kinda flat, and cut it into eighths. Then I took one small section for myself. Weird, huh? Later, I dreamed of Vegas again, walking around with my mom, sis, and best friend, when my mom insisted on buying us one of those cinnamon sugar hot pretzels and some fruity alcoholic beverage. I woke up while she was at the counter, paying for everything.

I think I am going nuts! LOL All I know is I wanna go to Vegas! Who cares about the food?

One week till spring break. Looking forward to the relaxation, then the whirlwind sprint to the end of the year.

Renee

I am a stevia fan. I use it regularly -- the brands I like are NOW (liquid and powder) and Organika (powder). NOW has some really excellent flavoured liquid options. A bit more pricey but a nice treat once in awhile!

And despite what I said above about the possibiity that a zero carb item may have some residual carb, these stevia brands are among the few items that I use generously ... in fact as much as I think I need them.

I use them to sweeten my tea and my puddings and morning shakes.

when people complain of aftertaste, i urge them to try a different variety. i suspect there may be some differences possibly caused by processing method used? don't know. i know that NOW and Organika are both good ones.

and i love zevia. don't have it often but am having a ginger root beer this evening.

sidebar: i was looking at other canned 'treat drinks' in the grocery store. I happened to glance at a knudson's lemon lime spritzer. i have always thought of them as 'healthy' alternatives to sodas. WOW... was i astonished to see that one 10.5 oz can of the lemon lime spritzer contains 29 g of carbohydrates... I just realized, a NSV: I haven't had tingling in my feet or ankles since I started IP. I never brought it up with my doctor because I didn't want to be told I was pre-diabetic or diabetic, and now it seems to be gone. :broc:

Also, what I consider an NSV: just took the last of those stinky IP fish oil caplets. On lisa32989's advice, I went and found some IFOS certified fish oil to take instead.

Don't be afraid to have the fourth package especially in week one. It's important to get used to the change and you can't do that if you think you are starving. You don't have your starting weight posted, but depending on your size, you may need the fourth! I had one off the first five days. I was lucky with no crappy feeling days in the beginning.

I love stevia in my hot tea, I hope it doesn't have a limit, I'm having 4-6 cups of hot tea a day now that I found one I like so much!

So I'm wondering if my birth control effects my weight loss? My tubes are tied and I only use pills to control hormones and PMS. Well I've noticed the week I don't take pills (the sugar pills) that I have bigger loss numbers... I know birth control can cause a person to gain 5-10lbs but I never had those problems. Now I'm wondering if it hinders? Or if I'm the only person who loses more the week of TOM I know many women gain :dizzy:

sidebar: i was looking at other canned 'treat drinks' in the grocery store. I happened to glance at a knudson's lemon lime spritzer. i have always thought of them as 'healthy' alternatives to sodas. WOW... was i astonished to see that one 10.5 oz can of the lemon lime spritzer contains 29 g of carbohydrates... Listed ingredients = SPARKLING FILTERED WATER; WHITE GRAPE, LEMON AND LIME JUICE CONCENTRATES, NATURAL FLAVOR.

i'll be avoiding that...always

Anni, That is so strange that with that ingredient list they come to 29 g of carbs!!

Doesn't seem legal to hard carbs under the term "lemon and lime juice concentrates"

Good catch!

Hello All ...Week 1 for me here and today was Day 4 and I was starving.... I ate 4 packets and lettuce for lunch and supper...Drank tons of water.. This was the roughest day yet... Am I off here or is that normal... I had been told that once u get past Day 3 you got it licked... ?? Another Question since I am very active (fitbit shows I burn 1800 to 2000 calories per day) and am lifting weights 3 or 4 days a week is it recommended I do consume the 4 packets per day???

Hi AlaskaLadyie...I am only 2weeks on the program and I could be wrong but I think you extra hungry because your burning so many calories working out. Because we are consuming only 800-900 calories per day on the program they only recommend light exercise. Perhaps someone else can chime in on this also. Does your coach know you are working out that much and burning that many calories?

My coach recommended going very easy on exercise while the body adjusts to the protocol, and by easy she said about 1/3 of what I was used to doing. I found that I didn't have the energy to work out for the first 3-4 weeks. When I was ready to start again, she said that if you can carry on a conversation, I would be fine without supplementing. If it was more strenuous than that I should supplement. I found that I can walk briskly without changing my eating, but I feel (and recover) better when I supplement after a kettlebell workout. I'm only doing kettlebells 2x per week right now. Are you doing IP on your own, or do you have a coach you can talk to about working out? There is also an exercise thread -I believe the link is in one of the main stickies.

Don't worry about being hungry on day 4 -keep following the plan and your body WILL adjust. Even so, there still be be hungry days. Good luck!
