Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote ...

Maintainers head for the roads, the pathways, their gyms or their studios, or their home gyms, and they get moving. Sometimes to move the number on the scale, sometimes to get stronger and faster, and occasionally for joy at being alive and having a body and having the ability to move it.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kHJdnPOTjUs/UP8BSKrlYNI/AAAAAAAARQc/CsG5gkZOqbo/s400/Jumping-Woman.jpg

Join me in striving to move daily, sometimes dutifully, sometimes with gratitude for relief from stress, and sometimes just for the sheer pleasure of working our bodies.

Tuesday, April Fool's Day

30 minutes StairMaster, trying to work on the concept of "body sensing" from my inspiring "Chi Running" book, managing all but three minutes hands-free -- not bad when my legs were still recovering from yesterday's run

4 miles walking the dogs (1:02:30)
30 minutes foam rolling

Saef - I looked up Chi Running briefly and I'm not sure that I "get it". Was this recommended or something you ran across? Thoughts so far?

Lovely title, saef. "Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages." We can be like the 29 gathered together at the Tabard Inn in Southwark to go on pilgrimage to Canterbury. The April showers are here today and I agree with Chaucer, 600+ years down the line, that's it's the right time to start another leg of this journey and learn along the way.

Managed to do the MBF exercises this morning but no more. I'll build up slowly after a month of blocked ear and virus.

Thanks, saef. I really like Chaucer. We spent hours reading the original at school, and translating. The first poet in English although he was a French speaker at court.

Glad that you approve of the thread title, Shannon and Birchie.
Over 30 years ago, I had to memorize the first 12 lines of the Canterbury Tales for a British literature survey class, including the correct pronunciation. My classmates and I were always practicing while walking across the quad or sitting in the dining hall eating lunch. It's astonishing to me that I can still recite those 12 lines. We're finally having that mild spring weather, so the lines bubbled up for me this morning.

Jen, I meant to reply to you about Chi Running. Someone on the forum recommended Chi Running to me in a PM, after reading in my posts about how much difficulty I was having with running. This correlated with my own Google searches and reading about it and also the Pose Method. But really, finally it clicked -- the idea of **relaxing** while running rather than trying to power through. And checking in with the different parts of my body to determine what is tense and what needs to relax. I still believe I am overthinking it, but the concept of relaxing just seems so radical to me -- I'm so used to the idea of "activating" or "pushing through."

Thursday, April 3:

Ran 4.27 miles, with three walking breaks. This was nevertheless a better run than this past Saturday.

Very interesting! I often do a "body check" while running - especially when I want to quit. I ask myself "How are your legs? How is your breathing?" Usually the answer is that I am fine and my mind just wants to quit. I'll have to read up more on this!!

In other news, I ran my first mile ever under 7 minutes today - squeaking in a 6:58!!

April 3: moved boxes at storage - 71 boxes, mix of letter and legal. Lifted, dumped contents to shred, rolled eight bins of shred material to the front of the building, empty bins back, broke down boxes, moved about 25 others around to make room. I'm calling it an active day. 1:05 minutes total activity, felt like a high MET level pretty much the entire time.

April 4: (just copying from my log, in the hopes that direct copy will keep me doing it regularly if I don't have to retype)
Warmup:
Hip flexor stretch x 30 seconds each side
Glute bridge x 10

Reverse lunges x 6 each leg

2a) Pike push-up 5x10, 60 second rest
2b) Neutral chin-up 5x10 - purple and black bands, 60 second rest
3a) Skater squat 5x10 per leg, assisted with suspension trainer for balance, 30 second rest
3b) Suspension trainer curl 3x12, 30 second rest

Sunday, April 6th:

Ran a four-mile race, in bright sun but stinging cold, colder than I'd expected, and on a very hilly course. By mile two, I knew I was done in, and my goal then was just to keep running all the way. We weren't chip-timed, there was just a flashing board at the finish line. I got a glimpse and I was somewhere over 45 minutes. But I ran all the way, yes, I ran all the way, though some ahead of me dropped into a walk & then ran -- and still made better time than me. So there's that: My beginning time for 2014, with my challenge of improving it over the spring and summer.

ETA: They posted the time, and my recollection was wrong: 44:32.016. So it was under 45 minutes, for which I'm glad.

Wednesday, April 23rd:

45 minute spin class, pretty intense. We had a very serious cyclist in the class tonight because of the high winds outside that prevented her from riding, and the instructor wanted to challenge her.

Thursday, April 24th:

60 minute elliptical, alternating forward and backward, resistance at nine, with me feeling weak & thinking I am not progressing on this machine -- and yet I managed over 6 miles.
60 minute Pilates mat class

Friday, April 25th:

20 minutes StairMaster, probably could've gone longer, but I'm trying to see if I can work out less but smarter with this New Rules program. The program would have me not even doing this cardio beforehand.
Another bout of the 1A workout. It is indeed tough. But I'm so used to directly working biceps & doing Gravitron pullups that I'm worried I'm lose the progress I've made there.

Saturday, April 26th:

60 minute spin class, concentrating on form
60 minute Pilates mat class, between two novices, which made me see that I've progressed in this class, though sometimes I feel like it's slightly beyond me. This is where I can see some gains & correction of imbalances through weight training, rather than just relying on cardio.

Sunday, April 27th:

20 minutes StairMaster, the usual, with me the only woman in the room, as increasingly happens. It's not uncomfortable, it's just interesting.
1B NROLW. The only notable thing here is deadlifting 110 lbs on a fixed barbell, which was at first fun and then, after many reps, not fun. Wanted to do 105 lbs but couldn't find clips to use the Olympic barbell, so I went up a notch and was surprised I was able to do it. Also I am getting better at lunges. My inner ear issue on my left ear (auditory nerve & inherent sense of balance destroyed by virus) makes this challenging.

Monday, April 28th:

45 minute spin class, which I went to even though I was so tired my face felt numb. I woke up pretty quickly. It was not physical tiredness, mostly, it was just a sort of nervous tiredness due to my having done a lot over the past 24 hours

Tuesday, April 29th:

20 minutes StairMaster, not as hard today, trying to breathe and focus on heels, hamstrings & glutes
45 minutes NROLW Workout 1A, adding a little more weight. For me, doing 12 consecutive step-ups on an 18-inch plyo platform while carrying two 12.5-lb dumbbells is TOUGH. And squatting 65 pounds is hard but doable.

I asked the instructor yesterday how many classes I've taken since beginning a tad over 3 years ago. He said 604. I would have thought it was more. I've taken a handful at other studios when traveling but the vast majority are at my home studio.

My favorite instructor is on the schedule to teach tonight. I'm always in a good mood when I have her class to look forward to:D

Wednesday, April 30th:

45 minute spin class, with the Fit Couple, a matching pair of serious cyclists with corded quads and lean legs, tanned faces, thin muscular arms. The spin instructor really drives us hard when this pair shows up. I wonder what it would be like to be an almost professionally fit woman with an almost professionally fit husband, doing outdoorsy stuff together all the time.
