Congratulations to Carol (newme12) who blasted past 5 pounds to win the last challenge, just like she won challenge 31 before that!

So this is a challenge for anyone! Anyone and everyone is welcome! You do not need to follow this plan. You can start anytime! and weigh in as often or whenever you can.

This challenge is to see who can lose 5 lbs the fastest! If you do YOU WIN! (more ways than 1)

It really helps me focus on the here-and-now and makes the goal of losing a lot of weight much less overwhelming.

167.6 (Last night)

The numbers don't easily show it and I can't yet post a graph but after the first 169.8 reading the day-to-day variation got much smaller, +/- 1 lb vs. +/- 3 lbs.

Projecting the trendline forward I should reach 150 lbs in 60 to 100 days.

An easy way to fall off the wagon is to starve yourself to try to lose weight faster. I'm now 32 days in and am losing on average 1 or 2 lbs/week.

To maintain my weight, 2200 calories in = 1500 calories lost to metabolism + 700 calories burned + zero body fat burned.
I'm losing 500 to 1000 calories per day from body fat according to the scale, my 700 probably hasn't changed, my metabolism might have slowed and my calorie intake must be way less than 2200.

If you want to research the science I recommend putting pdf after your search terms; it tends to pull up professional papers which should have more credibility than do every day opinions.

I had a holding pattern for just as long where my weight loss/week was 0.13 lbs (as calculated by my spreadsheet because it was too small to see otherwise) with a big daily variation.
I got disgusted with my lack of progress so I cut way back on my eating so now I'm losing 2.4 lbs/wk with a smaller daily variation, at least for now.

Changing your habits will give you a weight change. I don't have much 'hope' for 'hope'.
Drinking only water may give -7 lb/wk but I don't have that kind of willpower.

I am pretty drunk right now but I think my higher intellectual functions are still working.

Or not! :D

My overnight weight loss over several days is

1.79 =average (mean)
1.80 =median
1.80 =mode
1.50 =1st quartile
2.10 =3rd quartile
so half the time I lose between 1.5 and 2.1 lbs.

This has to be water weight loss.

And, my weight gain in a 16 hour day
1.69 =averge
1.60 =median
0.80 =quartile
2.40 =quartile
-0.6 =minimum
3.8 =maximum
so half the time I gain between 0.8 and 2.4 lbs. This is not water weight and may take up to 50 hours to lose.

Does anyone have numbers substantially out of this range?

In principle you could lose 5 lbs in 7 days by fasting. Anybody done this?

So the scale is back up... But if I go Monday to Monday, I lost over a pound in one week - and given how I'm eating AIP right now, maybe that's how I need to measure, because I think I'm losing, just quite slowly (like half a pound per week)

Sue I whooshed, but up not down. :( I did alot of physical stuff this weekend so maybe that is part of the reason. I did eat badly thought too. Had to move washer and dryer for the new ones. Laundry doors would close with new set, so had to install a new track and reattach doors. Then on Sunday I started prepping the garden (weeding, turning the soil, etc.)

I love those chunks of testosterone laden meat bags....anyway I was trying to figure and unfigure and decide if I wanted to know that much. I pulled out my old nutrition book and it was about useless. The dietitians at work are all toothpicks. Is there a fat dietitian out there? I did read about people doing more and more of alternating fasting with diet. Kinda like the caveman days, the body was not use to routine food. I'd suck and I have absolute no willpower for a 5-7 day fast and I'd assume you'd gain it all back once you started eating again.

I think I'm losing, just quite slowly (like half a pound per week)

-0.5 lb/week is -0.07 lb/day.

That's the trouble with small weight losses; without calculations you cannot see your daily loss.

Here's mythical weights over 3 days
1, 170.2
2, 169.0
If on day 3 you weigh 170.1 then you're losing 0.05 lb/day, averaged over these 3 days. If it's 170.0 then it's 0.1 lb/day. If it's 170.2 you're not losing or gaining.
I sure can't tell by looking at the numbers when the differences are this small but the calcs say what is happening and you'll know within two or three days what is happening.

The command syntax in my spreadsheet for the trendline or slope is
=SLOPE(B1:B3,A1:A3)
if the days are in cells A1 to A3 and the weights are in cells B1 to B3.

For only two days the slope is easy:
(170.2 - 169)/(1 - 2) = 1.2/(-1) = -1.2 lbs.
but you need several days to see the long term trend.

is the Terrible Trending Tuesday related to the weekend syndrome?

Maybe, but there are all kinds of stressors are popping up.
Weekends do break the routine and routine seems to be important with this project.

Yesterday I was just about fasting and this morning I'm back down to 166. The average over 39 days is now -0.89 lbs/week. Not as rapid as it could be but the day to day variation has gotten smaller. A near-fast for two weeks or so should improve my stats.

A tablespoon of oatmeal before bed seems to reliably prevent me from going to sleep while still feeling hungry.

I have you at +0.08 lbs/day. :(
If your last reading was 193.0 you'd have zero gain & zero loss and the 0.4 lbs may be water weight variation, about a half pint.
Can you gimme' another few days worth from before the 21st?

Wobbly
03-26-2014, 06:25 PM
I hope this is my last attempt at a formula. :D

Calories in from food(CI) = RMR + calories lost to activity(CL) + body fat change (BFC)

The CI to maintain my weight = RMR + CL and any excess or deficit will go into changing my BF.

So, for me, RMR + CL = 2200 cals/day.
Eating 2200/day gives
2200 = 2200 + 0. No BF gain or loss.

If CI = 0 (fasting) then
0 = 2200 + (-2200) equals a daily body fat loss of 2200/3500 = ~ 0.6 lb.

So it doesn't seem possible that I can lose 1.3 lbs/day but that's what I'm seeing so I have to conclude that 1.3- 0.6 = 0.7 lb of this is water.
Maybe I am becoming dehydrated but I don't notice any symptoms. Maybe as I weigh less I need less water.

MsChris
03-26-2014, 06:28 PM
Wobbly - when you are burning fat instead of carbs like when doing low carb or fasting, doesn't your RMR go up? I read that your body has to work harder to burn fat for fuel than carbs, and therefore, more energy is expended.

Dunno'. I know physics but this is also biology.

BTW, I'm dropping 1.9 lbs/day somehow. If I stay on the wagon I'll soon be out of here.:)

Post a list of day numbers and then beneath it post a list weights. Then I can cut and paste each into spreadsheet columns and do some stats.

E.g.

1
2
3
5

160
165
155
170

The number of days and the number of weights should be the same, 4 in the above example.

With as many samples as you have, I'd first just post all the weekly readings, 26 or so,

week number \/
1
2
3
4

160
165
155

and weight taken at the same point in each week.

If that doesn't show enough detail we can go to every two days.

I hope to soon post my graph, 40 days worth. It's quite a bumpy line.

Your average weight change over these weeks is -1.4 lbs/week but it appears to be somewhat steeper in the first 10 weeks. Pretty respectable, I think.

Unfortunately, for some reason Excel won't yet let me expand the vertical axis so I can see temporary ups and downs. Sometimes I get it to work, sometimes I don't. And the Apple people have stopped giving me free online help and now want me to buy the help.

By comparison, my average over 40 days is -0.99 lb/week but over the last five days I've somehow averaged -1.05 lbs/day. Regardless, I've felt over the entire 40 days that I am almost starving myself.
BTW, because of food transit time, less than a three day average does not mean much and because of weekly variations, seven days is a good minimum. To avoid systematic errors from weekly variations, taking a reading every 6 or 8 days is probably a good idea.

Got the graph to work, my mistake, this time I wrote down the steps to reformat an axis.

Your change from week 17 and on is more or less a straight line at -1.1 lbs/week and so for next few weeks you can expect pretty much the same.

BTW, a straight line doesn't fit your data too well - in the first 6 weeks you lost 2.9 lbs/week - it's concave upward so it's an exponential or reciprocal curve. But my Excel doesn't do sophisticated curve fitting so I use the straight line method and your last few weeks are following a pretty good straight line.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curve_fitting

There are probably pdf documents on the Web where researchers have come up with formulas for the weight loss over time for most people.

Speaking of which, do you have data for the first 20 days or so, and the last 20 days? The daily variation might provide a clue as to whether you changed your habits or your body has adapted to the weight loss routine.

With your data and mine we have two sets of samples to compare with others on this forum. A good start, and I can always use practice in interpreting graphs and data.

Been to Germany & England, never to France except for the Colmar region. Got to do it soon!

I've attached a file of my weight journey.

The large up/down variations seemed to smooth out after day 20. I guess you could say I've reached 165, and will take 100 days to reach 150 (-0.96 lb/wk trend)

Thanks, this is very helpful and somewhat reassuring, as I know the weight loss was faster earlier on, but it's nice to know you're seeing a consistent trend of about a pound a week in the more recent period.

I do have daily weights from the first 20 days and the last 20 days as well, here they are (I'm only posting the numbering 1-20 once, ok?)

There are some diet changes - at the first period I was doing very low carb ketogenic, and in the last period I'm doing low carb but paleo autoimmune protocol, my carbs are up considerably in the current period (from under 20g to closer to 50-60). Calorie target is about the same, but obviously I'm smaller now. No change in exercise.

Again, thanks a lot!

1st 20 days, -0.47 lb/day and a + or - 1 lb variation.

Last 20 days, -0.13 lb/day and a + or - 2 lb variation and the peak to peak variation is growing. It looks like my graph in the early days and looks like it's going out of control. Something is going on.

From what I've seen so far, one general comment is that people can lose at a high rate for a short period but a lower rate for a longer period and so it's a type of reciprocal relation. I may be able to find pdf papers on the Web that give limits to this curve.
I've noticed the same on exercise machines: I can put out 750 cals/hr for a short period but the same number of calories all day long.

I think there is an analogy between this kind of weight loss time series and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_chart
so there may be a way to warn dieters when they are really losing it.

You're welcome. :D

For sure weight in the early weeks of a ketogenic diet comes off really quickly, at a pace that never repeats (in my experience and what I've observed from others). I love that rapid weight loss but I'd be worried about my health for the long-term if it kept up like that forever!

The more recent period would be worrying me if I didn't already know why my weight loss has slowed. Since I changed my diet March 1st I'm eating 3 or 4 times as many vegetables (and thus carbs). And while it's left me feeling great and energetic, I think some days it's kicked me out of ketosis, in particular on days when my protein is also on the high side. It's actually reassuring to see that there is a -0.13/day loss more recently, because the scale has been moving up and down quite a bit (probably in part due to the fact that physically I'm moving my scale in my bathroom whereas normally I leave it alone!).

Wobbly, thank you very much for putting your Excel skills & time for analysis to work for me on this - I really appreciate it.

Best to you! - Sarah

I'm losing weight again and I am hungry again but at least now I know what ketosis is.
TV commercials showing food are bad enough but now I have to look away from even printed words referring to food.
If I don't fold in the next few days I might get to 160 very soon. :dizzy:
