Join us for a groundhog challenge -- can you make your shadow smaller in February? The monthly weight loss challenge is a great place to track your progress in February and, then, follow through with each monthly thread for the rest of the year.

State your goal for February and join a supportive and encouraging group to help you meet it. We will compile our goals into a list. As each goal is met during the month, it gets turned RED in celebration.

I'm in! I love this idea and want to get serious again about losing. Moral support really helps me.

My goal is to get to 215 in February. 2 more days until I start tracking here. I am ready! :carrot:

Hi....I would love to be a part of the challenge...I need to be accountable.

My first goal is to walk for an hour every day that I am off from work.

My second goal is to not eat in my vehicle and not eat after 7pm.
My third goal is to lose 2 pounds a week.

I would like to join also! I would like to lose 12 pounds in February; not eat out more than 4 times, and try five new recipes! Twelve may sound like a lot - but I am at the beginning of my weight loss and have a lot to lose.

pixie3208 I like setting the smaller goals so I can actually reach them. When I first started
dropping some pounds I would be so mad at myself if I didn't lose 10 pounds a week. All
of the negative self talk would make me just want to give up. I am happy with 1 pound a week,
or even a week without a gain is good.

I am a low carber, a vegetarian, and I also adhere to an eating pattern of calorie cycling called JUDDD.

Hi everyone!

I am in! I'd like to lose 2,2kg this month and make it to 76,5kg. I just realized that's kind of a lot, but let's aim high.
Not weight loss related, I hope to get back into my exercise routine; hopefully to beat my 11k time and I want to run 13k, which is further than I ever did before, and if I'm feeling brave, maybe even 15k. But that just as a personal side-note.
I will weigh in on Fridays but check in with exercise and calories daily.

Hi all,happy February! Only 49 days til spring!

Since I have a post treat gain today, I'm just making my goal 151.

I don't want to say I'm losing 8.6 pounds when I'm really only losing 4.5, 151 is a scary enough number for me on it's own... :lol:

Well it was an amazing month last month...ending out at 246, so my goal this month is 236! 10 lbs....

I know that I will eat things I shouldn't, that the scale will rise for it, that it will also rise for no reason from time to time....BUT I will not let that get me down, it will not defeat me.... I will return another day and keep at it!

well, just to throw something on about it....I ate a small piece of cake with frosting tonight....numbers might not like it tomorrow. Wish me luck! Going to people's houses to eat seems to present a challenge to me even when everyone is very supportive. The meals were almost entirely low carb, which was really nice of them. Mist meals have a lot of starch.... or most for anyone I've known.

I don't weigh or test my glucose/ketones on DownDays so I have nothing to report. Going light today, just having a hb egg, a bran cracker to choke down my supplements, and later tonight a scrambled egg for dinner.

Watching the game at home but we aren't having anybody over so there won't be a lot of snacks. If DH and DS want snacks, I can pop some popcorn for them and we already have hummus and pita.

Gonna exercise again tonight with the dog 2.5 - 3 miles, with weights.

I am ready for the February challenge! I was an avid runner and triathlete until a knee injury took me out last year. Since I can not run I have turned to the Jillian Michael's Body Revolution DVD set and am excited to start them tomorrow. With my injury comes depression and weight gain so I hope to find support from this blog and Jillian's DVDs. :D

Run time and inches are still the same as they were, but weight is looking good. If I can manage 145 by February 28, then hopefully I can get 135 by April 26 (my second mini-goal deadline!)

Thanks for setting this one up Joy - count me in.

Feeling a bit glum after a bad end to January. Worked really hard for most of the month and ended up back at my start weight. Gives me a really big goal for feb as I have to lose jan and feb's weight - or try at least. So yeh, nine pounds please. I need a whoosh to get be going again.

Other goals are:
Complete month two or my DVD fitness programme and buy something new for March (suggestions welcome!!)
Only alcohol on two weekends
On plan at least two weekends (one done already yay!)
Average calories per day (taken over a week) - less than 2000
Run 20K and book half marathon!

Lots to do. Fit and focused - my motto for Feb!

I would like to join. My goal will be 204lbs by February 28th. I will weigh in on Fridays. As a side goal I am going to try not to eat after 7pm/ have a 11 hour fast each night. My only day I can waiver is Mondays as I have a 2 hour exercise class. I am off on Tuesdays so I can eat breakfast later those days.

Good morning just checking in. I weighed myself today and I am down 1 pound! I managed to see the superbowl without stuffing my mouth with unhealthy food. Although I must admit with so many commercials advertizing pizza it was hard. Luckly my hubby helped me and ate strawberries with me.
My weight on Saturday was 203.8 today Feb 3 I weigh 202.7

I didn't weigh in on the 1st, so i will keep my weight from Jan 31st as my starting weight. I have started out in thw wrong direction this monght but will turn this around now! I was out for a run on the weekend because the weather was permitting and realized that the last time i made signifigant progress (and found myself weighing 144) was in November at which time i was out running twice per week. The weather since then has keept me indoors and I'm realizing that I have not been getting the same burn on the treadmill, and also, lately, my trainer has wanted me to do intervals rather then "steady state" long treadmill runs. Looking back at Oct/Nov, i can definately say that the long steady state runs were actually working very well for me. I'm finding myself sitting here hoping that the weather improves soon. It isn't so much the cold, but i prefer not to run when the sidewalks are a mess of slush and ice -- its too dangerous!

Hey everyone!! I'm IN!! Thank you again Joy for doing this!!

I weighed in at 194 on January 31st so I'm going with that as my start weight (already a pound down!!) and I would like to aim for 7lbs this month as then I'm safely into the 180s (argh!! can't believe I'm writing that number!) and it's a healthy rate of 1-2lbs a week which is what I want to aim for.

So, my goal is to be 187 by the end of the month!

OK, I weiged in on 2/1, 267 lbs. My goal is 255 by the end of February. At 255 I will be categorized as obese and not morbidly obese. My other goals are to eat out no more than 4 times and to try 5 new recipes. I ate out on 2/1 (road trip) and am trying a new Cooking Light recipe for dinner tonight! I don't weigh myself daily because I would drive myself crazy - so will just post the weight updates weekly.

I've started to head in the right direction again. Not really sure what's been going on over the last week - seemed to take a whole week to lose my 'weekend weight' - usually only takes a few days. Better late than never tho right?

Went out for a long run today - 15k - and finally booked a half marathon in may. Excited to have already hit one goal for this month (booking said half marathon) even if the main challenge is actually going to be to run it!! Hang in their knees!

Welcome Everyone....As I go through life and this weight loss challenge, I find my biggest obstacle to be my attitude, not about the numbers on the scale but about the thighs I see or the big butt that is reflected in the mirror......I need to remind myself that I am so much more than those negative comments I've heard since I was a child and I am a woman who is in a body that yes has curves and will always have curves but my body deserves the best I can give it...whether its positive feedback, care and or nurturing..... I want to use the numbers on the scale not as a loathing but as a tool to be the best that I can and give myself the best life possible :)

yes, it was my birthday. :D i calculated what i need to do to get back on track and today it's 875 cals and the rest of the week 1000 cals and then i can go back to regular 1200-1500.

thanks for the impetus to do those calculations.

(i am sprinting to 191 and then i will take a diet break again to find maintenance.)

Feb 2nd Stayed under calories. Did not eat exercise calories. No food after 7pm.
Feb 3rd Slightly over calories 1786. Did not eat after 7pm. Did have black decaf tea. But I did that and still lost today.

Current weight 211.6. Nice downward trend finally. I have been on point for 1 week and never gone over my calories. My fitness class was cancelled so I walked in my house. Boring I know.

I am so hungry lately, isn't even funny. I sucked it up yesterday though.
Slowly easing back into running - I am glad we have such a mild winter this year. Also - I did finish HasFit's 30 day six pack challenge last night, and no sixpack today!! SCAM!! Kidding ;) I can actually feel my tummy tightening up, so I'll just restart the program.
Crossfit today <3 haven't made it the last 2 weeks so I am pumped.

Went under 40 BMI on Monday the 3rd. Now at 39.5.

NightAngel - electronic scales save the previous value which is stored in memory. If the next weigh in doesn't change by more than (.3 kg for my scale), then they will just display the last value.
The reason they do it is so the scale won't hunt around and show different values every time you weigh if you jumped on and off the scale every 15 seconds. The makers don't want you to think you bought a piece of junk.
So you can defeat this by getting on the scale - say it weighs 150.1 lb. Get off and pick up an item that weighs something like a full bottle of shampoo. Now the scale says 151.5 lb.
Get off and get back on holding nothing. Now the scale says 150.0 pounds.
The scale would have never reset from 150.1 to 150.0 unless you did an intervening step with a different value.

This behavior is well documented on the internet. So if you are losing .2 pounds every day, the scale is still going to read 207, 207, 207, 207 until it drops more than .6 pounds or so (who knows the exact value...) - unless you do the differing weight step to change the value in memory - or get someone else to weigh since the last time you weighed. Then you should see the daily micro losses.

NightAngel- Ha ha! so true! I have been going on about my DVDs a lot. Basically I started one programme last autumn, got hooked and now I'm half way through a second cycle, bored, want something else to start in march but can't decide what. I'm also not good with quick changing dance moves, but want something challenging too. Set myself a goal to do 3 programmes this year, so your guess about something new each month sounds right up my street. I could write reviews or sthg!!?

183 - way to go with your hasfit programme. Sounds like you're getting back into your routine! Hope running going okay after your break - my legs have been sore after that long run... I heard somewhere if you feel hungry it is your body tricking you - I have a mantra 'I'm not hungry, I'm thirsty'. Makes me laugh. I'm always hungry when I say it !!

Marli - Your post made me lol. It's good to have a challenge!!

What I'm noticing is how much I enjoy exercising these days. I'm not so excited by the diet though. Maybe I need to focus on that a bit more and get some new ideas/recipes/plans in place. This forum seems like a good place to start! ;)

I am about to my lowest for at least 20 years. I can remember being 198 for a long time years and years ago. I hope to get a big woosh and break through soon. Feb 2nd Stayed under calories. Did not eat exercise calories. No food after 7pm.
Feb 3rd Slightly over calories 1786. Did not eat after 7pm. Did have black decaf tea. But I did that and still lost today.
Feb 4th: 211.0lbs. No food after 7pm, had white tea

Can't get over how fassssssssssssssst this thread is moving anymore. This is only the fifth day and we are almost to page 11, usually page 11 is on the 15th day or middle of the month. I have started a post several times to get in here but never get finished with it, and it has moved on so far that I just delete and promise to try again the next day :o:


My heart is out for some of ya who are struggling with scales stopping suddenly, or in the case of a few of you, making a big jump up for no reason. But however frightening it is for you, I sit here secure in knowing all will be A O K, that the scales will relent and square up with ya. They are a bit stubborn like that at times. I even see our GURU, Jacqui struggling a bit, plus our mater de forum, Joy, is going through some sort of struggle and my feelings are out for her.

Myself, it is time for me to get back onboard with the weight loss. I have put on enough muscle, time to work on weight again. Don't know what my weight is right now, have not weighed for some days, but it has been holding around 232.5 for almost three weeks while I dropped some fat and put on some muscle. I will try to weigh in the morning and post for my weight. My goal for this month will be............ 6 lbs????? OK, yes, I will try for 6

183 - Turbo Jam are video workouts. They can be found on the Beach Body website,...or I got mine cheaper on ebay. I love them because the music is good and the instructor doesn't annoy the crap out of me. (some of those video instructors are just a tad to perky for me). It's a lot of kicking and punching...fun!

Hello everyone it is Friday weigh-in day. This morning I reached my -20 kilogram goal (-44 lb). Part of this week's loss is due to the huge sodium spike I had last Friday, which ruined my January performance from a 10 lb goal down to 7 lbs + something. I'm not fasting I have just been shedding water all week apparently.

I'm call it my 3Ws. So, my February goal is to complete my 3Ws every day for the rest of the month. 3Ws -- done today! Know what you mean Joy, I'm doing the same thing. Back to circuits, food accountability and no p.m. snacking. Hope you have some success this month.

workinglikeadog Here is what I eat and exercise on a typical day. I just upped my calories from 1560 to 1800 because I was losing weight really quickly. I exercise A LOT. Up to 3 h per day (I know I am little insane with it) with one rest day per week. Last month I exercised 64 hours total. My intensity is high, I sweat profusely whilst exercising. When I lift I lift in a circuit format for 45 minutes going from one machine to another without a break between.

My yesterday;
Meals

B -Orange, egg and green tea
L- Smoked salmon, cream cheese, flackers
D - Big salad w/ chicken, feta and veggies
S - Apple, almonds and plain greek yogurt
Total cals 1770

Exercise
4.7 mile treadmill 60 min, swim 45 min, step aerobics 60 min

Hi guys :)

today is my weigh-in day - and I'd lie if I said I wasn't disappointed. I was eating on plan and back into exercising this week, so really, even this little gain is dumb. Well - on to the next week, I guess.
On a happy note: I think my legs are back to normal :) the weather was gorgeous yesterday, and I couldn't wait to go run after my AM study session. So I went 2 rounds - 6k longer than I ever ran before, and going for 2h straight without break. Can't do that everyday, but puts me in a positive mindset for my half-marathon. I can totally do it!

kelijpa you can totally keep your winter :p

boatingmommy I am always looking for new video workouts, so I'll look into Turbo Jam. I think Jillian Michaels has new workouts, too, I loved Shred and Ripped.

183StGB Way to go with your long run. I have found that even if i'm regularly exercising and eating on plan, i don't really lose as much as when i am also running. I'm sure your next weigh in will be a happier one now that you are back to your runs.

Things going really well this week - mixed up my exercise a bit and stuck on plan. Getting closer to losing my Xmas weight (10lbs!) - only 3lbs to go

I'm on it right now because I know I've got a few challenges ahead - away next weekend and the one after. Lots of temptation heading my way.

Feb 2nd Stayed under calories. Did not eat exercise calories. No food after 7pm.
Feb 3rd Slightly over calories 1786. Did not eat after 7pm. Did have black decaf tea. But I did that and still lost today.
Feb 4th: 211.0lbs. No food after 7pm, had white tea
FEb 5: 209.2 no food after 7 pm. Had black tea.
Feb 6: 208.2 no food after 7. Water only.
Feb7: 208.0 ate food until 8pm but will be sleeping later so should get my 11 hr fast. Ate my exercise calories. We will see in the am what damage it did.

Still at 152.4 today. :mad:

My blood glucose is great at 83 and I am definitely in ketosis (ketones 1.6).

My weight loss has slowed dramatically. There really isn't much I can change or eliminate from my diet, and I'm already exercising enough (for now) so I think I'll just stick this one out for a few more days. I am having a MediumDay instead of an UpDay today because I have to rearrange my days this week. MediumDays are easy for me and they are lower in calories so maybe that will help.

Well, Friday and Saturday I went out of town with my partner and his family to participate in a women's fishing competition, which ended up being cancelled due to the rain and wind. We still went fishing in the harbour and though the fish were babies, I caught two on a 50cm line that I held in my hand LOL. It was the highlight of my year so far because they were quick!
Friday night, we had takeaway fish and chips for dinner :cry: and, as usual, I ended up having the leftovers so they didn't go to waste. Saturday morning, my partner bought me a mince and cheese pie (we have meat pies in NZ :D ); however, I managed to escape having that because we bought cereal stuff. I don't know how healthy dinner was, but it was better than the night before.

I weighed myself yesterday (Sunday) morning and I was 63.5. This morning, I am 62.7 kgs. I'm coming back down...

I never had much luck with the urine strips. They never showed more than trace for me. I want a number!

There are only two meters for at-home use which test ketones. I have both of them! The NovaMax Plus has more affordable strips and a smaller sample size, but it is somewhat less accurate. The Precision Xtra ketone strips are really expensive and the sample size is comparatively large but the results are more accurate. I prefer the Precision Xtra to monitor ketones because of its accuracy. And I have found a Canadian pharmacy source for the strips which makes them MUCH more affordable.

I test every other day in the morning before I eat/drink anything. I want my ketones in the optimal range: 1.3 - 3.0. No more guesswork for me; I KNOW whether I am in ketosis or not. I have made some dietary and exercise adjustments using the information I get by monitoring my blood ketones/glucose and now I am always in ketosis. Though no matter what I do, I have a hard time getting any higher than 1.6.

I don't test several times a day because the strips are expensive and I don't like poking myself all the time. I figure if I get a consistent reading every other day or so, I am good.

NightAngel - thank you! I am doing good old fashioned calorie counting, doesn't work for everyone but works for me. And because I hate feeling hungry I am naturally going for healthier food because I don't want to spend all my calories in one meal haha :)

NightAngel we usually go out to eat on the weekend, kind of planned off plan, then back on track Sunday, last weekend with the Super Bowl we were off Sunday too. That mucked up the system, so this week back to plan and hopefully stay on track for goal...

Today is a heavy exercise day and also an UpDay, so I am sure my weight will stay here for another day, but day after tomorrow I hope to see 150.6.

NightAngel26: A reward could be a good idea! I blow hot and cold with rewards. Sometimes I can come up with something that I want enough to work for it but not so much that I'd be so disappointed if I didn't earn it that I would overeat over it (that's counter-productive behavior). Other times, nothing seems to fit the bill, so I don't worry about it. Just seeing a long string of "done!"s is reward enough at the moment.

Goal: 3Ws (Weight, Write a food plan, Write a post) every day, starting the 4th.

The post-weekend accountability post. The main culprit was the banana and raisin cake with toffee icing that I baked on Saturday. And all the trail mix I snacked on. And the curry (this list could go on....)

I hate the mornings after an off-plan night when I am afraid to weigh-in. I need to pay more attention to the successful people here and how they use moderate tactics to lose and maintain. Too many times I wake up and say, "I can eat almost nothing today because of yesterday if I am going to make weight on Friday."

starting weight 2/1/14 212.4
Feb 1st Stayed under calories but did eat my exercise calories.
Feb 2nd Stayed under calories. Did not eat exercise calories. No food after 7pm.
Feb 3rd Slightly over calories 1786. Did not eat after 7pm. Did have black decaf tea. But I did that and still lost today.
Feb 4th: 211.0lbs. No food after 7pm, had white tea
FEb 5: 209.2 no food after 7 pm. Had black tea.
Feb 6: 208.2 no food after 7. Water only.
Feb7: 208.0 ate food until 8pm but will be sleeping later so should get my 11 hr fast. Ate my exercise calories. We will see in the am what doing it did.
Feb 8 207.2 ate until 8:30 but will sleep later again.
Feb 9 207.2, No foods after 6pm and possibly shy on water.
Feb 10: 207.6 exercise class night. Ate late. Won't have breakfast until 9am. Water up to date.

Darius 183 is right, it takes away the power of the off-day if you just get back to your normal plan. For me planning to have an off plan day right after WI makes it easier to stay on plan, I can have whatever I want on Friday so i can resist on Wednesday or Tuesday, sometimes events happen off our schedule and learning to roll with it and get back to normal is part of learning how to make this a lifestyle rather than just a diet. You're doing great keep working and tweaking your plan and you'll get to your goal!
