South Beach Diet - Wintry Weekend Beach Chat 1/25-1/26

"Red sky at morning, sailors take warning." And, oh boy, do we ever have a glowing red sky here this morning! We're only supposed to get a couple inches, but it's definitely going to happen.
After my coffee, I'm going to run over to Dad's to write out some checks and get his pills sorted for the week, and then I'm heading home for the rest of the day. We were warned that because of the snow and ice already on the roads, they are going to be especially slippery when the snow starts. I plan to work on my cross-stitch project and hopefully finish it this weekend since I just ordered two more.
It seems like a good day to make a pot Split Pea Soup for supper.

You're getting snow? No fair! I'll have to check, I think we're only getting flurries. We really need to move where there's more. Ruth, do you need a roommate?
I'm off to work shortly, and then tomorrow's DH's birthday, so we're going on a date. I will bet he'd like some kind of cake (probably cheesecake) for tomorrow, so maybe some baking as well.
Otherwise, just chuggin' along here....

I sure would like to send you my snow, Tammy. We got another 5 or 6 inches overnight and it's still floating down. The deck steps have disappeared once again in the drift. Disney went to the edge, looked down and then stared back at me watching her from the door. Guess I was supposed to have shoveled them for her majesty! Maybe later.
Linda, sounds like another good day to do a quick Dad visit and then hunker down at home. I will probably do the same and, once again, put off the trip to the city for the hardware store list. So what if the folding door is off the track and I am improvising a sink plug with a jar lid!
Take care of yourself and stay safe, Snow Bunnies!

Good morning! It is 17* but VERY windy and we are supposed to get 3 or 4 inches of snow later today. I need to go to the grocery store and re-stock the veggies this morning. Maybe pick up another turkey breast since they are on sale. DH and I recently had a forehead-slapping moment: rather than buy deli meat, did you know if you put a piece of "real" meat in the oven you can have dinner and lunch too?!?!Who knew?
Other than that, some laundry, cleaning and perhaps booktime. I love weekends!
Cottage, good luck on that cross-stitch. When you are done I will send you a project that has been in progress for close to 10 years!
Tammy, have a good visit with your Dad.
Ruth, I think your snow is coming my way.
Have a good day, chicks!

Beth, it sure is snowing here now and it's Skate The Lake (https://twitter.com/bigrideauskate) in the next town. The guy next door just got into his truck to go and clear snow off Big Rideau Lake. I hope the snow stops by mid-morning or they're in trouble. Luckily we don't have below 0ºF; it's actually going way up to 27ºF later. Heat wave!
01-25-2014, 08:23 AM
Saying hi from the project...no snow here, in fact it's quite mild. I've been doing some sanding on the front porch.
Happy weekend everyone!
01-25-2014, 08:35 AM
Good morning :coffee2: I was up at 5:30 but not entirely awake. I'm not sure I am now ;)
It's another exciting weekend of laundry, errands, and cooking. I might just sneak a nap or some reading time in. I definitely need a little down time. I think we will spend quiet evenings watching movies and cuddling with the furry babies.
I don't think we are supposed to get much snow here. Looks like it's all staying west of us this time. Of course my parents are getting it so we will bring our snow shoes when we visit. I wouldn't mind it all so much if it wasn't so darn cold out there. Oh well. It's the weekend :)

Linda - Do you have a favorite recipe to share? I've never made split pea soup but have bookmarked a couple of recipes recently.
I am working the closing shift tonight and plan to lounge around all day until I need to get ready for work :) I have leftover black bean chili to pack for dinner. No more sandwiches for a while! Tomorrow is supposed to be unseasonably warm here and since I'm off work, DH and I will hike. Haven't planned out that far for dinner yet so will have to dig through recipes and get to the store this weekend.
Have a great weekend.

Got most of my cleaning done last evening just need to dust and I am done other than more laundry that is never ending.
Not sure what is on the agenda today we are not getting any snow and the high will be 36 so we will definitely venture out and do something.
Ruth and Cottage stay warm and safe with all of the snow you are getting.

I'm not Linda, but I just tried this recipe (http://blogs.prevention.com/meatless-monday/2014/01/06/split-pea-soup-provencal/) a couple of weeks ago. It's a little different, we liked it.
01-25-2014, 10:26 AM
Karen and Cyndi, that recipe is very similar to mine, except that I don't put celery in it. I also add Liquid Smoke, to taste.
It's just started snowing here. I've been to Dad's and took care of all his business, ran some errands for him, and now I'm home to stay.
01-25-2014, 12:04 PM
Yum, thanks, gals. Guess what will be on our menu this week!
01-25-2014, 01:55 PM
Ooh, that recipe sounds good! Might have to add it to my menu this week as well.
Slow day today- couldn't sleep last night and finally fell asleep around 7 this morning. I miss my caffeinated beverages.
We got some more snow (YAY!!!) but our road is nasty and un-plowed. It's dirt and gravel, so unless I really really have to go somewhere, I believe I'll stay put.
Stay warm and dry, everybody!
01-25-2014, 09:39 PM
Quick fly by before bedtime :) Think warm thoughts for me tomorrow PLEASE :)

Good morning chicks!
Date night was...ummmm...horrible! DH wanted to see "Lone Survivor", so I went with him since it was his choice for his birthday. I couldn't watch half the movie!! Very, very, violent. Next time...he can go to a war movie by himself. I looked at him half way through and said, "you couldn't pick a comedy, could you?".
But today is his actual birthday, so hopefully it will be better. What we do depends on the weather, although we have church this am and class tonight. I do need to plan out my menu this week, I was bad last week (but didn't do too bad eating wise).
Anyone with exciting plans? HOw much snow did y'all get? We only got an inch, maybe.
01-26-2014, 06:52 AM
Saying hello from the jobsite. Today is my last day here new tenants moving in tomorrow.
Have a great day everyone!
01-26-2014, 07:23 AM
Jennifer, I'm sending you warm, supportive, thoughts for today. What's up? Be careful and take care.
Tammy, that's a shame that your date night didn't turn out well. I hope today's plans make everyone happy, and wish your DH a Happy Birthday for me!
We ended up with about 3" of new snow, on top of the 10" we got earlier in the week. Because of the freezing temps, the roads are particularly treacherous this morning. I'm going to wait til later to venture out. It's supposed to be clear for the rest of the week :crossed: so I'd really like to get my car washed this afternoon. Other than that, just a day of puttering around the house and making Kalyn's Swiss Chard and Goat Cheese Quiche for supper. Eating is going pretty well, just overdoing it on the snacking, even though it's all OP stuff.
So what's up for today in your life?
01-26-2014, 07:39 AM
We really didn't get any noticeable snow, but it is -11 again this morning. We are having a true old-fashioned winter! I did my shopping yesterday and browsed through the mall (got a free pair of tights with my store rewards points!!) so today I need to do the at-home chores. I am planning on trying a new pulled pork recipe from Kalyn's.
Tammy, hope today is better!
Jennifer, stay warm. I'm guessing you are working outside?
Debbie, hope your projects are going well.
Going to search for coffee...Our machine is SO SLOW!
01-26-2014, 08:24 AM
Good morning from sunny and -15F Delta. We got about 6" of white stuff yesterday with major drifting. Some of the highways were closed because of drifting and I could see why when I tackled the big drift at the deck door. I managed to clear off the deck stairs but only brave Jazz ventured down. He went into the yard up to his neck but managed since the snow was very light.
Sure wish I had some of that split pea soup for breakfast today. A smoothie just doesn’t cut it on a cold morning. Had a really cruddy meal last night. I had a commercial Chicken Parmigiana cutlet in the freezer and had it with quinoa and lovely spinach. The cutlet was terrible - I scraped off the coating to eat just the chicken - it was that pressboard chicken. I put it on the deck and even the cats and coyote didn’t eat it! I’ll do better today.
Not sure what will happen today. The roads are still pretty bad so it won’t be that elusive trip to the hardware store. I may venture down to the local store for some split peas and some bird seed. The birds around here have spread the word - “Eat at Ruth’s”! I’ll also bake a pie for Jason and Amanda next door - I’ve not really welcomed them in Village style and he shoveled my side porch and a strip in front of the barn. (I have the pie in the freezer ready to bake so don’t be too impressed.)
Whatever you do, take time for yourself even if it’s just a moment to put on some hand cream.
01-26-2014, 08:37 AM
This morning I'll head to the store to buy groceries for the split pea soup and at least one other dinner. This afternoon we hike! I think it should be around 50 when we go and then tonight a cold front comes in leaving us back in the single digits (but no snow) tomorrow. I think I'll pull the trigger and order my Alaska album today. It ended up with 62 pages.
Have a great day.

Hey guys. I'd like to check in from time to time as well. I'm really new - early on. Today has gone well with my diet. About to make salmon and ceaser salad for dinner. Having a cup of coffee now - haven't had a pop in almost 6 days (which is nothing short of a miracle lol)...
Just hoping to get through the night OK.
When did this start to get easier for you guys? Meaning, right now I feel like I'm "on guard" a lot. Did this diet ever start to just be the way you eat?
01-26-2014, 08:06 PM
JPD yes it does get easier, mainly because it becomes a way of life :) I still have to think about my choices, like today. Beautiful gourmet deli, pizza, sandwiches, wraps and decadent desserts. Decided to go straight to the salad station. The little voice in my head said remember how happy I was with the scale today, don't ruin it lol. So the guys ate pizza and I a huge freshly made salad with all my favorites.
Today was an outdoor hockey game at Yankee a Stadium. I laughed when two of NYPD's finest joined my detail lol. Guess their Sergeant wasn't looking for them. The game was delayed over an hour due to sun glare!!! It was brutal, but we made the best of it. I had so many layers on it made using the restroom quite a challenge. Decided to limit my fluids today lol.
One fan did tell me I was the coolest cop in the universe....yes he was quite intoxicated lol
We got about 3.5 inches of snow last night which I shoveled before bed. Another dusting today at the detail not cool lol
01-26-2014, 08:48 PM
Just a quick Hi before the weekend is officially over. Glad everyone is OK despite the latest coldfront.
Had the world's slowest wine tasting at the market yesterday. Church today, then breakfast with Mark and a grocery run. It must be pea soup fever because I picked up the ingredients for it too & I hadn't even checked in yet lol.
Welcome JDP. Yes as Jennifer said it will get easier the more days, weeks & months you do this. Arm yourself with the food list so you always know what is a good healthy food choice for you in any situation. Also, check out the recipes here & on Kalyn's so you can make lots of different things to avoid boredom. And if you're really dying for a pop then maybe you could allow yourself a sugar free sparkling water as part of your daily water intake if its the fizz you miss? Eventually you may find you no longer crave soda pop though; I used to be a diet coke addict myself & I no longer desire it myself.
01-26-2014, 08:50 PM
Thanks guys.. what is Kalyn's?
01-26-2014, 09:07 PM
Kalyn's Recipe Kitchen if you google just that name it should come up.
I don't have the link offhand but you will see it mentioned throughout the site.
Dozens of healthy delicious recipes there not only for South Beachers but anyone who wants to eat healthy.
01-26-2014, 09:35 PM
jekel- You're definitely the coolest cop!
pearlygirly- Ooh a wine tasting! Sorry it was slow, was the wine at least good?
