I almost met my walking goal of 1000 miles for 2013, I may be 20 miles short.

I am challenging myself to walk 1000 miles in 2014.

Who wants to join me? I don't care how you accumulate your miles. Let's get moving!!

Remember to reach 1,000 all we need is to average little less than 2.75 miles a day. Very doable!

I'm trying to move more so this seems like the perfect challenge for me.

I'm going to be travelling for 2 months straight (May-July) so it'll be interesting, there'll be days where that'll help me and definitely days where it'll be difficult. But it can't hurt to try.

I had a bad start, last year Changergirl. I essentially did not walk for the first 3 months, and I am still managing to get to nearly 1000 miles :) -- Do your best and biking counts too :)

Count me in folks! :) My husband and I joined a gym and will be able to use the treadmills and ellipticals as well as taking the dogs out for a walk. This will be a fun way to track miles walked.

I went back and searched through the threads and found the original post that Gary (EZ Money) started in 2009--But the post that shows through all his support was in 2011--- thought it would be nice to have it here to remind us of the motivation he gave to us all!! I'll always remember him and his humor and caring posts! SHOOT!! the Smileys didn't come through!

Doesn't matter if you walk or run it swim it bike it treadmill it or even scooter it....

it's EZ Less than 2.75 miles a day....even if you take a day off each week it's only a 5K (3.2 miles) a day....the important thing is that you do get out there and off that couch or out of that chair

heck, take a day off each week, give me 3 miles and I'll give you the .2 miles if you park further away at the grocery store, take the stairs, etc.....you know the drill.

Ok, so I have set this goal 3 years in a row now and haven't accomplished it .....but I have recorded 2,181 miles in the last 3 years....works out to an average of over 725 miles each year

Reaching the goal is important but it isn't the defining moment of my journey

that would be the effort I put into reaching it My effort has been about 75%....

as you can see from my miles

Yes! I'm completely in. I joined last year but kept falling short and eventually set a final goal of 800 miles. I'm 7.5 miles off that now with two days to go I need to get moving today and tomorrow.

2014 is a new start for me and I'm going to go for the full 1000 miles.

I'm really excited for this to start. I got a FitBit for Xmas and I've been tracking my steps/distance since then. I'm actually quite surprised with how little I move on a typical day. I've been averaging around 5000 steps/4km (less than 2.5 miles) which isn't going to get it done. I've decided to make sure I take a walk every hour. Even if it's only 5 minutes it's definitely helping me move.

Today I hit the gym and went swimming. I tracked how many lengths of the pool I swam and calculated the mileage from that. So, 1.61 miles in the pool today.

I am going to join. I usually wear my pedometer all day long, just need to take it off for my exercise class because that is how I usually lose it. So a lot of my steps are not pure exercise

For those that do wear pedometers you can wait until the evening and then log in your miles from the day. That would include any intentional exercise you do. As Gary always said, everything counts as long as you are moving!! It is totally up to you how you want to do it. I need a battery for my pedometer but as long as I can get at least some intentional exercise in each day that is good. Once I get the pedometer going again I hope to at least get a total of 4 miles each day. Ok I said it!!

Last year I would edit my original post, but once a month (usually at the end of the month) I would add an update post to the thread with my totals for the month and the year. That seemed to work well for me.

Hi All, good to see so many take up this big commitment. I usually log in once per page and update my miles on my ticker more often. Sometimes that is once a week, sometimes more often. So I'm gonna post and try for 1/2 hour of aerobics before b-fast.

I only count what I do as "exercise" outside of daily activities. That may be why I didn't meet the goal in 2013, though! :)

Hello everyone! I'm checking in and posting that so far I've done 3.59 miles. It's not much but it's something. I can get more miles on here though on a treadmill instead of the pool. :) But I swim a lot when I go to the gym.

lotsakids - I do a combo of exercise dvd in the a.m. and walking my dog when it warms up. I have my eye on a Leslie dvd for this a.m.

sum - getting a great start, you are going to blow through those 1,000 miles easily this year.

2.25 on the dreadmill and a 45 minute hike in snowshoes. No pedometer on but I am going to call it 3 even. You can't cover as much ground as quickly when its fresh snow, but it is a great workout. Dog loved it too!

Well, today was just a plain lazy day!! It was cold, snowy and just felt good being curled up in front of the fireplace.. So had my pedometer on all day and just got 0.75 miles in... That's OK tomorrow is a new day!

I'm still hurting from what I think is IT band syndrome, although I'm beginning to wonder if there's a hairline stress fracture in the hip. I went to the gym again and rode the exercise bike on a very low level. The machine said it was over 6 miles in 15 minutes, but I know that my real Schwinn one-speed covers one real mile on the real road in 5 minutes, so I've decided to claim one mile for every 5 minutes on the exercise bike even if the bike says it's more. For now I think the non-weight-bearing bike is the only thing I can do to add miles.

Unfortunately, the snow and frigid temperatures has made activity difficult this weekend.

Had to push it a couple days, I'm not used to working out this much but I felt so great today after I finished my first 3 mile walk routine. Felt like I could take over the world. Self-esteem hit an all new high. I was like oh yeah I am awesome you did it, it sucked but you rocked it! I even danced a little after. lol Now my hip is killing me, I knew the risk and I also talked to my doc and he says don't overdo it but certainly don't quit exercising. Guess I just got to not run around like a 2 year old after my work outs :)

Hi everyone! Looks like we're all doing really well. I'm definitely using this challenge to make sure I'm not sitting on my butt for 8 hours at work!

I'm editing my original post but I think I'll make a new one every week. So week one is done and I've completed 29.2/1000 miles. Let's just hope I can keep this pace up for the next 51!

Wanting to walk outside with my dog but the wind has settled in for a while. Blowing between 21 and 31 mph right now. So I started the day with Jazzercise and am at 2.5 miles this am. A good start, will get myself out to the studio and organize/paint today.

I'm working through some knee issues so my running has been curtailed. I'm walking a lot more and now doing regular strength work. Good thing there are lots of ways to get miles in :D

mekar, this morning I started the day with a Leslie Samsone dvd and the weather looks like I will be able to take a walk with my dog after lunch. I love walking so this is a perfect day of exercise.

I will continue to update weekly. My miles are a combination of walking in the malls and stores and on my treadmill. Really cold and lots of snow and winds here in Minnesota this year.

I went to try and get a mile or so in at the mall before work and I discovered that they don't open the doors for mallwalkers until 800 AM now, and it used to be like 5:30. Bummer. Too cold to walk outside before work for 1/2 hour

In January, I did 124 miles. So in February to try and get a bit more or keep even I am trying to get on the treadmill Saturday and Sunday. I already did not make it today.

For your steps and height, it really did have to be more than 83 miles. You must have a huge stride. I am also a bit envious that you live in California cause I'm thinking you must be able to get outside to walk year round? Eastern Oregon is nasty cold and windy for a solid 5 month period, so I have to create indoor exercise like circuits, dance and dvd's. Last year my original goal was 2013 miles in 2013. At your rate you will easily make 2014 miles in 2014. I may be inspired by you to increase my goal for the year. Step ON! :carrot:

Thanks all, I didn't even think that I was calculating wrong until I was walking with a friend and we figured out what we walked and it didn't match what how I was dividing my steps from my armband.
It is nice to live in Northern California where there is mild winters, I shouldn't complain about being cold when it is 40 out. I do need everyone to do a rain dance for us as we are in a severe drought already.

55:1000. I went over my mother's for a week to work on a cat tree. Between the body aches of working and the fact my mother is a trigger, I fell of the wagon and fell off hard. I have gained 10 pounds since that visit. To make matters worse I hurt my ankle pretty bad transporting the cat tree to my house. The tiniest bit of walking is excruciating. I've been resting it hoping in a couple days it will be better and I can get back to my routine. I'm desperate for some exercise. :(

This is just my own personal opinion since I am not the thread originator. I don't exercise during farming/gardening season because I'm moving/lifting all day long and can easily get in 20,000 steps a day. I need to exercise during the cold weather season cause I would like to not move at all. So I created a 10,000 steps a day year round challenge for myself and measure my movement from morning till night, that works best for me.

This thread is great for any mileage challenge you might want to give yourself. Thank you Sum for hosting this challenge.

To answer you questions what counts in this thread; the answer is EVERYTHING! The point of this tread (and how Gary originally wanted it), is to keep everybody moving.

Some people count just their exercise mileage, other count what ever their pedometer says.

I put my treadmill on when I get up and then take it off when I get ready for bed.. So it is from all day. So I'm not getting as many miles in as I should but have been a little distracted. My DH was diagnosed with cancer about 3 weeks ago and we have been busy going to VA hospitals in Littlerock, Arkansas and up to KC too. So not getting much intentional exercise in. We are still waiting to hear what kind of treatment they are going to do and when!! Patience is something I don't have much of anymore....

We have been up in Kansas City bouncing between the VA hospital and the Kansas University Hospital since Monday..So with all the hurry ups and waits, I gave up trying to keep track this week. I do have an entry for today though. All the tests have been done and my DH will be having surgery on April 1. Hopefully, there will be better days ahead after a few more challenging weeks ahead. Anyway, I went and updated my miles for March.

Well, we didn't get the happy news we were expecting from the surgery. Once the surgeon got in there he saw that the cancer had spread to Tim's liver and determined removing the tumor on the pancreas was a higher risk than leaving it. They did remove his gall bladder which was full of stones. But told us that chemo is not very successful with this type of cancer. He is stage 4 and the decision to do chemo will totally have to be up to him. As the surgeon put it to me he will need to choose the quantity of life or quality of life. So it wasn't good news at all. He should be released from the hospital on Saturday. Just wanted to come and give an update. So not sure how my miles will add up now. I will update my post tomorrow.

Karen, I'm so sorry! What devastating news. Illness at this stage is all encompassing, there's no way around it. Walking may take on a new meaning for you at this time of your life. Regardless of how many miles, you just may need it as respite to clear your head, be alone with your own thoughts, or find a bit a rest from care taking. :hug: to you my dear! Know that you have a lot of virtual sisters and brothers on these boards who care about you and your well-being!

I reset my goal on spark to 100 miles per on month so it would be easy to track whether I am on target. I have my fitbit linked there and I like the way it has your year to date miles on the first fitness page you click. At the fitbit site it is a lot harder to find that number. You get to today's totals, weekly totals, monthly totals, badges you've earned, lifetime achievements, etc. I've had my fitbit two years and I have yet to figure how to get my totals this year there without adding it up month to month. If you click on yearly it goes to the number for the last 365 days not from January til now.

I have both the Flex and Zip. I have had the Zip for about 2 years and recently got the Flex so I could also track my sleep patterns. I have noticed that the Flex does not give an accurate count on the treadmill or when walking through stores pushing a cart. When I have worn both for a full day to check one against the other, I have found the Flex can register from 1400 to 2000 steps less than the Zip for the full day. It appears that arm movement greatly affects the accuracy of the Flex.

I know my zip is very accurate as my treadmill also counts steps and it is always spot on with the Zip. Since I have only my Flex linked to my fitbit account, I now wear the Flex hooked to my belt loop when I use the treadmill or shop. After doing that and rechecking with the Zip it has brought the difference in step counts between the two down to about 350 per day, which is acceptable to me. I am hoping that once I can get outside to walk, the increased arm movement will help with the accuracy of the Flex.

I have the Fitbit One and before that the Ultra. I wore them both together for awhile to compare accuracy and also previously used an app and a regular pedometer. There was little to no difference between the two Fitbits for me. The app and the pedometer were not even comparable in accuracy. We often walk a 3 mile path that we have verified with a bike and a car as well. The rural roads here are also named by the mile and half mile distance in our county. So, we knew and could track our mileage before purchasing the FB and knew that the apps and the pedometers were not always right. I LOVE my fitbit!!
