Remember that this way of life is only partly about looking great in holiday clothes.

It's also about keeping moving to stay healthy and strong ... to make a New Year's resolution to exercise less necessary ... to enjoy being alive and discovering what your body is capable of doing ... to relieve the stress of having to complete additional tasks related to the holidays.

That's why we're maintainers moving through December, all the way to the edge of a new year.

I said the same thing Saef, then I found myself three miles into a 15k and was so overheated I was nauseated and dizzy. Ended up tying my shirt around my waist, and didn't even really notice. No comments from anyone, no one pointed and laughed. I even looked at the picture at the end of the race for a second. or two. LOL

So basically, Krampus, you live in a land where people actually enact the ritual depicted in the initial inspirational photo in this thread.

Says me, grumpy at not getting in my cardio early this morning, before work, because I felt I was behind with my to-do tasks and needed to get online at 7 AM to cross out a few.

I'm so boring with this, I just pick a different TTap DVD to do, four or five mornings a week, right now. Hardly worth noting on the thread. Way to go for the nice strength training, though. You all are inspiring me, even though I likely won't make it to a physical gym for another two or three decades, or whenever my last kid leaves the house :D

Tuesday and Wednesday I did my Basic Plus Tempo workout, and today I needed something lighter, so I did the MORE Chair workout. Good stuff, but I feel like I've been beaten with several large sticks. That's what I get for slacking off for three months on daily workouts :o

A good day not to take my kids out downtown  Alaskans have a version of this, but it's generally costumes and not speedos, for safety reasons. That said, we also have the Polar Bear Plunge, which is a mid-winter jump into the frozen lake/harbor of choice, depending on the city - for charity of course :). I figure if you have to remove an ice chunk to access the water and then keep agitating it to keep a clear spot, it probably not particularly suitable for humans, but what do I know :p

Thursday, November 12th:

Treadmill run just under 4 miles, starting at 4.5 mph, then down to 4.3, with walking intervals. Just when I think I've figured this running thing out, I find I'm off balance. One of the gym instructors watched me and told me what I already knew, that I drag my right foot. I wonder if it has to do with my ruined inner-ear balance mechanism and my deafness in my left ear? I drag my right foot so much that it sprags on the treadmill belt and makes it squeak from the contact of rubber on rubber. So much that I've pretty much destroyed the outer sole on my right running shoe. The gym instructor said I gallop like a horse and lead with my right foot.

Probably I am overthinking it. I find running as wearying as an elaborately choreographed routine. My cardio fitness is great, it's all the mechanics of the stride. Honestly I am thinking about finding a running coach but first I want to see what I can try on my own.

60 minute Pilates mat class in the evening with the instructor who talks too much and leaves us lying there on our backs on the mat, not moving, just listening to her monologues.

Saef - weird about the stride imbalance. I wonder if just being aware of it, on your own, may correct the issue a fair bit?

Krampus - I was wondering about your avatar as well!

I blogged about my day, but I did the "Hit the Floor Softer" TTap DVD, which is insane and the "softer" part is laughable. I still can barely hold myself upright on the couch, as my entire core is completely fatigued. Even those transverse abs, which I have trouble with after so many pregnancies. My praise to TTap for being such an excellent workout, but it's not without it's brutal moments. Ow!

Saturday, December 14th:

60 minute spin class with weight & resistance band intervals, lots of cancellations due to the impending snowstorm and the snow falling as class began
60 minute Pilates mat class

Strange thing happened in class today. A woman new to the gym, with the kind of slender willowy body that I envy, took her place on a mat to my left. She was shy or aloof & had little to say. As class went on, I discovered to my surprise that I was stronger and fitter than she was, though undoubtedly I am more than 20 pounds heavier than she is. That turned my head upside down as I pondered a question: If I couldn't have both, would I want to be fitter, even if it meant staying the same weight, or even gaining weight? saef - she could be working her way back from rotator cuff tears, like me. Also, I was always hypermobile (really bendy joints) growing up. I can never lift as much weight as my ligaments are too elastic to provide the level of support needed for power presses. (Even with PT and lots of stabilization exercises) There's so many issues that go into how much weight you can lift; if you've had previous ligament tears or multiple rounds of tendonitis, you're really cautious and will always go for more reps rather than absolute weight, even though you work towards the point of fatigue. At least, I do!

35 minutes run/walk treadmill
15 minutes rowing machine
20 minutes hip work with elastic bands and pulley machine (clamshells, lifts, pulls, flexor, adduction, abduction)
25 minutes knee work, VMO strengthening (primarily wall squats, single leg squats, step exercises, side and reverse lunges)

Jen, that's what I'm wondering. Is this really about health and strength for me, or is it aesthetics? I think seeing this woman forced me to think about that. I believe it's both but over time, it's become more about strength than aesthetics. Maybe more like 70% about strength and 30% about aesthetics. I'd be lying if I said I did not care how I look and that it doesn't bother me that I'm a stocky pear shaped female. "Us sway-backed girls" is how the Pilates instructor described me and herself the other night, and that's been bothering me. I still look envious at the thinner women in class even if they are weaker. Maybe it's different for me, at least a little, since I exercise in a gym with lots of people around me.

45 minute spin class ... which I felt lucky to make after a long day at the office with three one-on-ones, and me hosting a staff meeting, then taking the dept out for their wine-soaked Christmas luncheon (mine was salad with grilled salmon on top and a Pellegrino with a lime slice), a traffic jam on the way home as everyone drives into Manhattan to shop & etc. Thank goodness for my laid-out gym clothes which I got into as soon as I walked in the door. When I'm dressed to go, I will go.

 sister

This is virtually what I had for lunch. It's such a good choice amongst a lot of rubbish. I think next time I'll ask wherever I have it not to bother with the 'house dressing' and just have balsamic vinegar or nothing. I almost always dislike the house dressing.

I'm the same way about the gym. I can't sit down after work or I don't go. I stand up and put on my clothes and go. Period. My lunch today sounds like yours too! I have a salmon salad from Trader Joe's (it's a couple days past its date so I hope it is okay still though).

Thursday, Dec. 19th:

45 minutes running on treadmill, at 4.5 mph, then walking for five minutes, then running at 4.3 mph for the last 10 minutes.

The gym's director watched me run and said my gait is improving. I'm not galloping as much. I'm still landing more heavily on my left foot and dragging the right foot a bit. I pick up my feet a little better. It's good to hear that I'm doing better than last week. That's all I want: Better than the previous week.

But then as I stood at the front desk talking to the director, I went into a scary place. She talked about all the pressure she's under in running the gym, the owner blaming her personally for a drop in membership (which is probably due to their price increase and other gyms opening nearby), and then told me she planned on losing 12 pounds and working on sculpting her legs. She asked me what my goals were. I had to admit I'd gained a little and could stand to lose eight pounds. But even as I said that, feeling uneasy, it was clear to me that her dissatisfaction with her body was also very much about her dissatisfaction with her life.

Then I was thinking about Charlotte Hilton Anderson, talking about her exercise addiction:

And while I did – and do – genuinely love working out, my exercise addiction had zilch to do with love. It was 100% fear-based. I was afraid I’d get fat. I was afraid of being weak. I was afraid of being at home alone all day with my four very young children. I was afraid I’d never be good at anything again, ever (black-and-white thinking for the win!). But most of all I was afraid of being left alone with my own thoughts. What I really loved about my chronic overexercising was that all the pain and sweat made it so I didn’t have to think about what was really bothering me.
I wasn’t working out so much because I loved it. I was working out so much because I was too afraid of what would happen if I didn’t.

I do NOT want to add another hour to my routine each day, just when it is dropping closer to the normal 30 minutes per day with some 90 minute days interspersed. I really don't.

But the invitation to join the gym director in working toward further bodily perfection is so seductive. I'm ambivalent so I'm laying it out here.

Thursday, Dec 19 AM:

20 minutes running on treadmill (2.54 miles), too fast for my protesting back which is still tender from shoveling. And 5 minutes of stairmaster because I ran out of time.

Hoping to make it to the gym this afternoon for round two. I have a teeth cleaning tomorrow morning.

saef: You have given this a lot of thought. There will always be someone somewhere trying to fix or ignore non-bodily issues by changing their body.

saef - "bodily perfection". Love that you used that term. There is no part of me that does any workout ever without feeling terribly inadequate and - if there is a mirror - focusing on my horrific imperfections.

I did a P90X DVD on Tuesday and realized that I was comparing my abs to one of the people in the video - she is a professional athlete who works as an ACROBAT and has for years. Really? I am supposed to be equal to her?

And then I wondered for WHO and WHY I'm trying to achieve these unrealistic expectations.

I think I'm babbling here, and maybe it's not making any sense. But I guess I'm saying for people like you and me - we could work out 5 hours a day and never achieve that "perfection" that we are seeking. And we sacrifice SO MUCH in search of it that I'm afraid that sometimes I - speaking for myself - don't see the forest for the trees if that makes any sense.

I applaud your desire to be more moderate in your expectations and demandingness of yourself - I'm trying to do the same...

Jen

Don't be seduced, saef.

"O, that way madness lies; let me shun that;
No more of that."

You didn't talk explicitly about your fear and dissatisfaction with your own life but you did obliquely by referring to other people.

I'd say that exploring these areas would be much, much more satisfying for you. It would open doors and display vistas you didn't know existed.

So I've been running on the treadmill and find it torturous. It's been killing my desire to run at all. But with iced over sidewalks I'm not going to risk falling. Hence I tried an experiment - run WAY slower on the treadmill than my normal run pace. I found it to be MUCH more tolerable! 7 miles didn't feel too bad at all!

I thought I'd run outside, because it's so unseasonably warm, but it was rainy, so I got on the treadmill. I tried to keep my upper body and arms loose, but I am still working on maintaining a consistent stride. Sometimes I feel that I almost have it. I wish I didn't think so much about it. During & afterward, I am feeling it in the upper hamstring insertion.

Then Smith machine squats, just 40 lbs, dropping below parallel; adductor machine; and finally trying out the leg press, a little too easy at 120 lbs. I need an instructor to show me this latter machine before I increase the weigh to what it ought to be.
