Default Spinning & short people.....

I work at the local Y, on the front desk. My official title is "Membership Services Representative." Part of the job for myself and my co-workers is to conduct tours of the facility for potential/new members, and to answer questions about the services and classes we offer (especially the fitness classes, since the aquatics programs are pretty self-explanatory.)

It occurred to me yesterday that, although I work at the Y (and also work out there!) I have never actually taken any of the fitness classes. So...how can I really do my job to the best of my ability if I've never taken any of the classes? How can I answer a question as simple as "What's that class comprised of?" if I just...don't know? (I mean, outside of what's actually written on the information sheet?)

So I've decided that I'm going to try each fitness class at least once. My schedule is, luckily, flexible enough that I'll be able to do that.

I'm starting tomorrow night with.....a spin class.

[insert dramatic music here]

I've *never* done a spin class. NEVER. And I don't even use the stationary bikes at the gym. My only real concern is that I won't be able to get the most out of the class because the bikes look like they're not made for people my height -- I'm only 5' and pretty much have stumps for legs (26" inseam. I'm not kidding.)

I'm planning to show up a bit early for class to (hopefully) get some help with adjusting the bike's height, as well as the position of the seat (my nether regions are trying to talk me out of the whole thing as we speak.)

But I'm determined to try each class at least once, and there's no time to start like the present. I've already made sure that I'm in a class taught by one of the less hardcore instructors (with a couple of them, I'm absolutely sure I wouldn't make it through an entire class!) and I already have the mindset that there's no need to try and "compete" with the other people in the class. So I think I'll be okay mentally. I just want to make sure I'll be as comfortable as possible physically, too.

Any suggestions from any experienced spinners? I'd love any advice.

Get a gel seat. Those seats are brutal. If you like the class and plan to do it regularly I recommend buying a pair of spin shoes.

I'll pick up a gel seat, because regardless of whether I continue with spinning, I'll still be using the stationary bikes. As for spin shoes...I don't think they'll be necessary since even if I do continue with spin classes, I'll only be doing it a max of three times a week, and I can't really justify that kind of expense. I have perfectly good, brand-new sneakers that will suffice for me.

I do spin and I am only 5'. I have no trouble doing spin. Definitely get there a few minutes early and the instructor should help you adjust your bike. I simply put the seat all the way down (in the "A" position) and scoot it as far forward as it will go.

At my Y they have two or three of the squishy seats that you can use...just ask the instructor. I wouldn't buy one. Plus, after a few times your booty tightens up and you don't need the seat anymore.

good luck!
