September always feels like a second New Year to me. What fitness level do you want to achieve in the next few months to a year? What can you do in September to help you get there?

State your goal and track it throughout the month with this supportive group of fellow exercisers. We'll compile our exercise goals into a list. As each goal is met during the month, it gets turned RED in celebration.

This challenge really helped to keep me on track last month. Without it, I'm sure I would have been lazy many days and would not have done nearly as much!

I will be in Europe for 2 weeks. I hope to do lots of walking when I'm there, although I likely won't be tracking my kilometres. While away, I won't have access to a gym, so I won't be able to do much other exercise. So, this month, my goal will be one-half of last month's goal...although I'm only going to count the days when I'm home in Canada. Whatever walking or other exercise I do while in Europe will just be bonus.

September Goal (excluding Sep 8-21): Walking 75km PLUS 500 minutes of other exercise (workouts, exercise bike, eliptical, etc.)

I love these challenges, gardenerjoy. Like Tuscany, I feel that they keep me honest, motivated, and on track.

September is a really busy month for me. I work at a university where there are lots of fall welcomes, gatherings, and special programs.

Exercise is my kryptonite so I can really use this thread to keep me motivated. I'll never need a water thread as I drink like a fish. And I'm usually good on food once I get going. But exercise is my Achilles' heel.

GOALS:

Complete lazy man marathon
12 hours cardio
8 hours yard work
Be able to do 50 squats in a row
Be able to do 2 full on my toes pushups in a row
Learn 2 beginner yoga poses

I am so impressed with y'all's goals! I'm just a walker, and with the uncertainty of my tender heel, I'm going to keep it simple. My goal is to walk 30 miles this month. (The walking path in my town is 1.2 miles long, so that means walking it 25 times.)

I'm getting back into exercising after 6 weeks of not doing much. I'm going to start the 'Drop Two Sizes' program and my goal is to stick with it. I'll be gone for almost a week so that means if I do everything else to the tee I'll complete 14 workouts. So that is my goal for September, 14 Drop Two Sizes workouts.

Okay, since I found out I was pregnant (between being nauseous and achy) I have gotten down pretty close to zero in the excercise area. I know I need to get back into the swing of it, so I'm going to make it fairly attainable without over doing it.

I did 30 minutes of Just Dance on the Kinect. I have no rhythm so I think that makes it harder. Not a blazing start to the month of exercise. Maybe I'll try and do one of the Leslie Sansone walking videos later. If I can at least get a mile in that will help towards the overly ambitious for me goals I made.

Of course, without this thread probably wouldn't have done anything.

I was doing pretty well with exercise in the first part of the year but got slack in July and August.

My goals are:

1. Get some intentional exercise in every single day this month.
2. Increase daily exercise minutes so that I'm above 30 most days during the last two weeks of the month.
3. Yoga at least twice a week.

Changergirl Two pounds is great for a trip home! I return home with that much after one night at a bar. Good luck with the challenge. I know how rough it can be getting back into a routine after travel. After a two week vacation I stopped exercising regularly for um over a year. :o

Hey all, I'm a little late starting this month because I was out of town. Last month I hit my goal, but it was hard. I'm going to try and do the same thing but up my walking. I really like how the 30 day shred has helped my body. I can see the muscles in my arms, legs and my butt looks pretty good!

crispin- those two pounds were waiting a week which is about how long it took for the water weight (i think) to disappear. Originally it was closer to 6, which was still better than I thought it would be after 3 weeks of pretty much eating every meal out.

Did the Sansone video again last night for another 2 miles. I need to get some cardio in today. I'll have to tell my lungs to prepare for panting.

I started level 1 again yesterday and barely broke a sweat, so I did level 2 also. I might have to revise my goals, but I want to see if I have the time commitment to do two a day. Plus my legs are really sore this morning.

Ok I am doing a pretty crappy job of getting in exercise. I can make some pretty compelling excuses (my infant is teething and is constantly strapped to my chest, the two littles I take care of haven't been napping properly, and I have been working 15 hours a day) but even if the excuses SOUND like reasons, I know they are really just excuses. I am still going to get my 1040 minutes in this month! Just need to get inspired!

This is an awesome idea!!!

In September I'm really going to focus on my yoga practice because it is building incredible strength and even though I haven't lost tons of weight yet, I can feel the change in my body from it.

My September Yoga Goal: 1,000 minutes of yoga
Sept 3 - 38 minutes (962 to go!)
Sept 5 - 40 minutes (922 to go!)

17/40 miles already done and it's only the 4th! I think I'll reach my goal and go beyond! Joining the gym on the 2nd was the best decision. Clocking up a bunch of miles on the cardio machines.

Walked 2.5 miles today even though it was muggy. And did 30 minutes in yard. I hate outside. We need climate control devices to make the outside more pleasant for me.

Jacqui & Stay Puft: I guess we're all different. You guys appear not to like cardio. I love cardio! I just put my iPod on, listen to the likes of Pat Boone or Hank Snow, and off I go. I just lose myself in my music and I barely notice that I'm exercising...it's so mindless. Have you tried doing cardio to music...or does that not help?

As for me, I had a "rest" day today...a rest from formal exercise that is, but not an actual rest day, since I've been running around all day like chicken with no head trying to clean the house, pack, run errands and get everything in order before I leave tomorrow.

I'll report back on my exercise progress upon my return. I'll no doubt do lots of walking when I'm away, although I won't be formally tracking my miles or minutes.

Have a great few weeks while I'm gone!

Tuscany, I'm not an exerciser in general. However, I do like to walk. Today, though, I had a terrible headache and just wanted to sleep. When I did walk, it felt like a chore. Normally, I want to walk 2 miles or more (although I have to keep it down to one mile right now or my heel is never going to heal)! Not today though. I just wanted to stay in bed! Anyway, have a fabulous time on your European trip!!!!!

Good thing I signed up for this. I was about to skip my workout today b/c I'm swamped with school work. But if I skipped, I would've "failed" the challenge b/c I set my goals on a weekly basis. So I took a break from the books and worked out. I'm so glad I did too because it helped me destress. :)

Miles achieved! Total: 43.76/40 miles as of today :) I think I'll be setting a higher goal next month! 7/20 gym workouts done. Working on finishing that goal now for the rest of the month.

Today's workout was really tough mentally at least to get started. I was exhausted and completely unmotivated. However, I knew if I didn't do it I'd miss out on my goal so this challenge was exactly what I needed to motivate me! I did skip out on the warm up which I don't find very useful as I thought I'd fall asleep doing it.

My goal for September is to go from little to no exercise to 300 minutes per week. I have knee and ankle issues so I'm ramping up slowly.

I am hoping to get to the point where I am completing three one hour sessions at the gym each week with 30 minutes of walking on the other days.

Week One: 143 minutes (two gym sessions, one walking session)
Week Two: 324 minutes (two gym sessions, one yoga session, three walking sessions)
Week Three: 303 minutes (three gym sessions and two walking sessions. Art fair all day Saturday and Sunday so no chance to exercise.)
Week Four: 200 minutes (three gym sessions, two that were cut short, one hiking session). It was a tough week mentally, physically, and emotionally so although I didn't make my goal, I still feel good having exercised as much as I was capable. Here's hoping October goes better!

I was steered to this thread by another member. I am new hear yesterday, and I hate to exercise. I have a recumbent bike that is collecting dust while my backside gets wider. I have looked down this thread and see all the exercise you are doing and I am ashamed to put my small oar in the water lol. Starting tomorrow I will ride my bike twice a day, 5 minutes each. I know that looks very small, but I am very lazy and very out of shape:D It is really inspiring to read what other members are doing esp. the walkers as I don't like walking, this is why I got the recumbent bike to start with:hug:

Sadly, I need to drop out of this challenge. :( My semester is too hectic. Over the past 7 days, I've exercised twice. I'm ok with that b/c I know I'm doing what I can. I'll return another month and do this challenge when I can commit more. :) As it is now, I'm only certain of having enough time to exercise on Saturdays.

My best exercise day was when we toured Siena in Italy, because the city contains all sorts of little hills that are almost as steep as staircases and range from 2 to 3 storeys in height. First you go up, then down, then up, then down. Walking through Siena is like climbing who knows how many flights of stairs. It's an absolutely beautiful city, and you certainly get a lot of exercise when you're there!

This thread kept me honest yet again. It was a long day. I was up at 4:30 am, since I had a very early breakfast meeting...and I was on the go all day. When I arrived home I did my walk (I enjoy my walk), following which I really did NOT feel like doing anything else. But I knew if I didn't, I'd struggle to make goal this month. So, I dragged my butt down to my gym and spent time on the bike and the elliptical. Without this thread and these monthly goals, I'm quite sure I would have said the heck with it!

I hear ya, Tuscany! Many times I don't feel like walking but I don't let that be an excuse. I have to be so busy that I can't fit it in or I have to be physically unwell or the weather has to be bad. Any other reason just won't do because of this challenge. Gotta make that goal! :yes:

Yes...there will be a new thread in October. GardenerJoy will likely start it in the last day or so of September. Many of us also participate in the September Weight Loss Challenge, where we report our daily (or weekly) weigh-ins and support each other through the month. Joy will start a Weight Loss Challenge for October as well and you're welcome to join that too.

Also, you don't need to wait a week. Feel free to jump into the September Exercise and/or Weight Loss Challenges if you'd like. Just set goals for the last week.

Yesterday I met my miles/walking goal. I have actually started integrating running on my treadmill. Just a little bit 5-15 minutes at 5mph, I may add some for the October goal. I may walk a small amount today but for the sake of the challenge, I'll just put off.

Thanks, Jacqui...and, I know what you mean, some days just get away from you. But you made September's goal, so that's something to celebrate. The parks where I walk don't close at dusk, but they contain signs that say: "WARNING Coyotes. Be extremely cautious when walking after dusk.". For obvious reasons, I don't walk after dusk!!

Oh my, Tuscany! Lol! I think that's an even more effective warning than "Park closes from dusk to dawn. Violators will be prosecuted." Haha!
