Default The real BMR

So last year I went to get an underwater weighing. This tells you your body fat to muscle ratio as well as an accurate bmr. I was shocked at my results. I had been waaaayyyy under estimating my bmr. I thought it was 1500, when it was really 1900. This is the difference between having a whole meal and feeling like I was starving to death.

Women's magazines and online calculators had been recommending me a number I could never stick to.

Eating 1900 to 2300 calories a day has made it easier to stick to my diet and unlike dieting at 1500 calories, I feel good and have energy.

I just wanted to share this and recommend getting an accurate, personal bmr reading. It makes a difference!

I love your post because there was a website I used to use that had a calorie calculator and it told me I needed at 1200 calories a day. I knew me and there was no way at nearly 240 pounds I could stick to a 1200 calorie a day diet. I was able to lose a great deal of weight eating a lot more calories than that. I honestly don't want to argue with the "experts", but these websites should really think twice before starting most out on a 1200 calorie a day diet. It's unrealistic for a lot of folks.

I think estimating an accurate BMR is one of most challenging tasks for calorie counting. If you don't eat enough, your body goes into starvation mode and will start loosing muscle mass.

I've been playing around with my caloric intake these past few weeks, it seems like I need about 2,000 calories to maintain my current weight. This is much lower than what I calculate as needing.

I'd like to get a more accurate BMR measurement, does anyone know how much these tests cost?

Interesting post....thanks! I'd also like to know my bmr and I'm wondering where I can get that tested.
