How are you going to light up the sky if you don't explode into pure energy?

Monday, July 1st:

Ran 4.27 miles, which I had the breath for, but oh, the pounding on the asphalt and briefly on cement sidewalks made me wonder, how do you people who run manage to go for so long & for so many miles without injury? Didn't help that my iPods were all dead this morning, so that I could hear my feet and my breathing. And the humidity was such that it was like moving through bathwater. At least the thunderstorm didn't happen till several hours later.

I can't even go for a long WALK on concrete any more without my shins and foot (plantar fascitis) hurting for several days afterward. I see people running on concrete sidewalks with the minimalist shoes and think "OUCH".

Saw the trainer this morning and put together a core programme*. I'm going to do that once a week, and the other programme twice a week. The other days I walk, if I've got enough time. Got the pedometer, you know. It is quite amazing how many steps I put together pacing round our tiny house.

*Once this is going strong I'll have another reassessment of whether to let running back into my life. Gazelle-like stuff would be what I'd be looking for rather than SI joint moaning. Krampus, crying knees and hips sound perfectly terrible!

July 2: weight training with a friend. She downloaded an app called workout trainer, which has a bazillion workouts. We did a circuit one today involving dumbbells, the swiss ball, the bosu, kettlebells, and foam rollers. There were 43 things that you did for a minute each, with 20 - 30 seconds of rest in between (intervals were timed by the app). It was fun and I think I will feel it tomorrow.

Ward - I love workout trainer. Did you guys do the pro version or the free? I've not upgraded yet, and wonder if it is worth it. I would like a real voice instead of the digital trainer - she is too artificially perky. LOL

We use the free version. There seem to be so many to choose from that we won't run out of stuff to try any time soon. And yes, I think I will be sore tomorrow, especially my legs, from doing jump squats with a 15 lb dumbbell in each hand, and which are not usually on the program. I know what you mean about the voice ... A couple of times she said, "15 seconds left ..." And I was thinking, "I've been doing this for at least 15 minutes already!"

Jen, what happened? Was it one of those small but deadly little twigs, loose gravel or a dodge to avoid a car?

This is so wrong of me, but after reading that yesterday, I had that old surf music song "Wipeout" going through my head. At the time you didn't have the picture up.

That is reminding me of my own childhood wipeouts, usually on my bike. I've still got bluish-gray scar in my left elbow from the embedded gravel that I refused to let my mother dig out of my flesh with a heated needle.

Anyway ... Friday, July 12th:

60 minutes Stairmaster, the usual split-up session
60 minutes back & biceps routine, and it looks like I am **finally** moving up to 17.5 lbs for curls, on which I can now do 17 consecutive reps. I am thinking back several years ago when 5 lbs was A LOT and tired out my arms.

I had a couple of people comment that it did look more like a bike wipeout. I laid right out - barely anything on my knees - my left hip and arm.

I don't blame you for the song! It was pretty funny in a horrible way. It happened so fast - I **think** it's one of those things that where a smart person does a very stupid thing. I ran through where they're doing road construction and got a stone stuck in my shoe. Rather then stopping and picking it out, I tried to scuff my shoe and knock it out. DUH!!!

July 12: 100 minutes bikram yoga.... Great class but now I feel lightheaded. Not sure if I'm dehydrated, have low blood sugar, or low blood pressure. So far I've had water and some sweet cherries. I can't find my blood pressure monitor so I'm hoping that takes care of it.

I need to pack and do a million things before I leave tomorrow.

Unusual bikram class today. One of my fave instructors was scheduled but she got stuck in bad traffic and didn't have a cell phone. Ran 3.84 miles, which took me about 40 minutes, and an interesting thing happened: As I was running, a real runner came by: Tall, thin guy with a bandanna around his head and a long, smooth easy stride. As he ran by me, I picked up something of his rhythm & pace for a few seconds and thought, "Wow, this feels ... right ..." and then he blew past and I lost the rhythm and went back into what I was doing, which feels very bumpy, landing hard, with too much upper body movement.

Friday, July26th:

Just 30 minutes on the StairMaster, re-learning what I already knew about how individual machines vary widely in their settings. My usual resistance level of nine & random intervals was unsustainable. I had to drop to seven, and then, after 32 minutes, grab the side rails. And then drop to five. I felt afterward that I'd done enough & did not need another 30 minutes ... but stopping at 30 minutes will fill me with guilt for the rest of the day
60 minutes back & biceps routine. The lack of 12.5-lb and 17.5-lb dumbbells in this gym (which nevertheless has dumbbells that go up to 125 lbs apiece!!!) made me drop lower on some exercises and attempt higher on others.

Again, I took on that 3.84 mile loop, and ran it in just about the same time, though it felt smoother, mostly because at 7 AM on a Saturday, that country road is nearly deserted and I was able to run near the center line where it slopes less. I will figure out this running thing yet.

Saef - I veyry seldom ever hit this stride on my own. I can always get into the groove in a race, but that is when I'm surrounded by other people running. In a normal run I tend to slow and walk too much, don't push the running, don't go as fast as I should. Feel like a big, lumbering elephant. I can hit that groove on my own if I speed up, my legs like faster. Try to picture the gazelle instead. LOL I felt it some yesterday - wind in my hair, legs felt loose, I always regret when I lose that vibe. Music helps - I find lately I hit the sweet spot when I'm listening to rap music, oddly. Or the soundtrack to Kinky Boots. Yesterday I really popped during the finale to the musical and to "Baby Got Back". :o
