View Full Version : To Weigh or Not to Weigh?

It used to drive me crazy when I'd eat well and exercise each week, only to find I'd lost a miniscule amount of weight or sometimes none at all. So when our scales broke down a while back, I decided not to replace them. From now on I'm only going to judge my progress by how well I'm eating each day, and how my clothes are fitting, etc.

Just wondering if there are others who have decided to ditch the scales or if you consider them a must have?

I must admit that I have an unhealthy relationship with the scales - I focus way too much on those little numbers. I'd love to ditch them too and use measurements instead, but I'm not quite ready for that step yet!

I don't own a scale. Between a few dr appts for me and for my kids, I have found myself in a drs office with a good scale every few weeks. This is how I have been keeping track.

I think it is better for me to focus on my daily and weekly eating and exercise than the number on the scale. Even though the number is quite important to me, I want to be sure that I don't allow it to be more important than what I am actually DOING. If that makes sense.

I was at a point of weighing myself every day, at least once.

I decided when I started dieting again that I wouldn't weigh myself more than once per week. It's not going well so far. I crave the scale.

I weigh everyday and record weekly, as you saw elsewhere liz i still freak out over the scales but its getting easier to rationalise low weighs in or jumps on the scale.

I like to make sure i'm going in the right direction, i actually took some measurements as well, its nice to see evidence of the inchs going down as i cant really tell when i look in the mirror. If you want to check progress you could do that? Word of warning though, i measured my husband as well and my bum was bigger than his beer tummy....was not happy...

One month I decided I wouldn't weigh until the end of the month, and when I did, I had gained 5 pounds! :(
I don't think I get obsessive with the scale, but I do use it to keep track and tell me directly when I'm doing badly. Maybe once I've got a rhythm going, which I've never really had before, I'll stop weighing as much and go back to only once a month.

I weigh every day to see the fluctuations, but I only record my Saturday weight. For me, I rely on the scale because I can easily be willfully ignorant of tighter clothes (or even growing out of clothes!) and ignore the scale. It helps keep me accountable -- especially since not weighing is the first sign (for me) that I'm wandering off plan.

I think if it works for you to not weigh, go for it! Everyone is different :)

I broke down and weighed myself today. I'm extremely happy about it though.
On June 24th, I was 162lbs. Today, I'm 158lbs. I've been struggling to get below 160 for so long. 161 was usually where I plateaued. If I stick with my diet, I have no doubt that I'll be able to get to my goal.

Sheena, I sympathize on having more girth than your hubby's beer belly. Same here! But we're going to change all that! ;-)

I have to weigh myself at least once a week, but I only record my Friday mornign weigh-in.

I usually weigh once a week, but if I know I'm due for a smaller loss (because of TOM, or I've had several large losses and am sure it's going to be a small one that week), then I skip a couple weeks because seeing a small loss or, heaven forbid, nothing at all will make me want to give up again.

Mccull, Those small losses or heaven forbid none at all would discourage me so much. Before my scale broke down I was obsessed with weighing daily, so it was really a blessing when it conked out.

I'm glad you're able to avoid weighing when you think it might not be a good time. :)

I'm fairly new to dieting and working to loss weight, but I have found that weighing myself every day is more motivating for me. Although it's extremely frustrating to see the scale not go down at all or go up, I feel like it kind of keeps me in check. Seeing it bump up, although I agree is a bit depressing, kind of just makes me want to work harder to have it go back down to my previous lower weight. The same if it's at the same number for too long. It's a sign for me that I may have done something wrong, where I need to go back and reassess and figure out what I did wrong and make it right.

I weigh everyday. It is so frustrating to have gained for no apparent reason. However, I think I would be even more frustrated if I waited a week to weigh and there was no change.
Well... Maybe 7 mornings of frustration is worse than 1 morning!

If I let myself, I would weigh every morning and every night..I know, it's a sickness! I am trying to only weigh every other day now, and eventually only weigh once a week..It is so discouraging to not see a big loss, but I also get deliriously happy with a small loss :) I think it's something that is different for everybody, much like everything else in life :))

I weigh once about every 3-4 days. I find it is more encouraging and surprising.
