Hi chicks!
This week, I received a very sweet message from devadiva who was asking me about my last race, as I was stressing about it on pretty much every thread of the Featherweight section. She suggested to post something about on the Exercise section... If this can motivate a few chicks, WHY NOT!
I ran my first Spartan Race Sprint ever last weekend, in Morin Height, Qc (Canada). The Spartan Races are, well... races :P when you have to face a number of obstacles. Usually, the Sprint version (there is also a Super and a Beast) is usually around 15 obstacles and 5 km (3.1 mi), but people who raced it with their GPS watch reported that this one was more of a 6.5 km.
Another challenge was that being held at a Ski Resort, the boyfriend and I were naive and were like ‘’oh, we’ll probably gonna run around the mountain’’. WRONG. We went up and down the mountain about 3 times, offering us a great bonus challenge. We ran on Sunday, but there was races held on the through the rainy previous day, offering us an awesome mud fest the day we went to conquer the mountain. I thought the mud was fun, the boyfriend was sick of it after the first 1 km
To name a few obstacles, there was : crawling under barbedwire, tunnel to crawl into, carrying weight around little path loops, jumping above walls, climbing up a rope, pulling a weight using a rope (that was a freaking heavy weight, I had to do burpees to skip this one :P, jumping above fire (that was FUN!), etc
I highly suggest you to try a Spartan if you want a challenge. People are pumped, and you easily get pumped out yourself: you really do feel like a warrior, crawling under barbed wire and jumping above wall. A race like that would be a good endpoint, or a great motivation factor, for someone who want s to train to become an overall fit person; I run a lot, but I took on weight lifting in the past months to be ready for the race (and there is still some obstacles I was not able to deal with). Honestly, to just be able to finish it was such a cool acknowledgment of all the work done in the past years to a healthiest lifestyle.
Here is a few picture of the race : )
