Do they do dinner cruises down the Chicago River? That would be cool....
Maybe rent bicycles and ride the lakeshore...?
Whatever hotel we choose, can we choose one with a fitness room?
I'm so excited about this!!!!!
05-21-2003, 08:56 PM
Oprah, Oprah, Oprah!

how expensive would a dinner cruise run?
should i surf that "chicago tourist" sites? maybe find out some cool things to do?
do we want to have a few speakers? either our own members or someone else?
does anyone want to volunteer their name, weightloss, and pictures to include in a letter to oprah?
05-23-2003, 11:14 PM
Okay...I just looked at one cruise site and their dinner cruises run $95.00 per person! Lunch cruises are a little more reasonable - $37.00.
As for speakers....I'm not sure we're going to be able to afford a speaker.
05-24-2003, 06:39 PM
Yes, we will have to keep costs in mind. I'll find a bunch of cool things to do and then list them with prices.
05-24-2003, 07:59 PM
Can we do a cruise w/o lunch or dinner? Much cheaper, can even get a group rate?
05-25-2003, 08:15 AM
maybe some of us could be speakers?
oh. and here's another thought... maybe a group session with personal shopper? so we can make the most of what we have while we're losing? and figuring out how to dress without breaking the bank while we're switching sizes all the time?
05-25-2003, 10:51 AM
Jiff - I really like your idea about the personal shopper!
05-25-2003, 11:00 AM
Just a thought....can any of our computer whizzes write the code for a countdown to convention clock and post it at the top of this sticky?
05-25-2003, 11:32 AM
jiffy - that's an AWESOME idea!! how do we look in to getting that?
05-26-2003, 07:23 PM
Most large department stores have a personal shopper. and it's a FREE service... of course, they want you to eventually spend money, but they really want to establish a relationship so that you think of THEM when you need to buy something.
so, maybe one way is to see if there's a major national chain in chicago [there HAS to be!] and see what happens. bloomingdales. nordstroms. macy's. SOMEONE.
05-26-2003, 07:54 PM
The chain that comes to mind is Marshall Fields...
05-26-2003, 08:55 PM
I want to see an Oprah show, lol. That would be a blast!!!!
05-26-2003, 09:01 PM
To get tickets to see Oprah, you have to call. Right now her site says...
Current Reservation Availability
The phone lines are now closed. See you next season!
Next taping season starts in September, so we'll (I'll) start calling then and we'll see what we can do. I believe Holly is coordinating a letter to Oprah to see if she'd want us on her show while we are in town.
05-26-2003, 11:51 PM
Should we invite Suzanne, Jennifer & Amy? After all, they are the 3FC that started all this.
05-27-2003, 01:43 PM
I would think so.
05-27-2003, 01:46 PM
that would be great to have suzanne, jennifer and amy come!
as for the letter... i still need more people willing to volunteer before/ after pics!!
05-27-2003, 10:03 PM
Yes, definetly invited the original 3FC!! LOL
Marshall Fields is the "major" chain in Chicago.
05-30-2003, 02:03 AM
so here's my question for all of you out there. are those of you that haven't said you are coming
A) really want to come but can't make it that weekend? (or money or something else is getting in the way?)
B) are not sure yet cuz it's so far off?
or C) aren't wanting to come, not interested, etc.
cuz i only have about 6 replies so far! i was certainly expecting more than that!!
05-30-2003, 12:51 PM
Would love to come, but not financially possible. With 6 kids in the house there are just too many other things that have to come first. I will definitely be looking forward to hearing all about it and seeing pix though!!
05-30-2003, 12:57 PM
I would love to come, but I have no idea what it would cost for plane fare and hotel and stuff. I want to come really bad though. :( When would I have to give a definite answer by?
05-30-2003, 01:38 PM
Sorry, Holly, these last 2 weeks have been pretty intense. I will PM you my sh*& now.
05-30-2003, 01:41 PM
as for a definate answer, it will only depend on when the hotel reservations must be made by. and since we haven't chosen a hotel, i'm sure that won't be for awhile! so i don't need to know NOW or anything, i just was hoping for an estimate of people who intend to come.
06-01-2003, 11:10 PM
We don't need anything definate now. We just realy want to know who intends to come if they can get it worked out!!
I'm thinking about it. I'm not sure yet because I'm tentatively planning a vacation for December that may take most of my leave time and funds. Plus, I'm really, really shy (have trouble meeting new people).
06-02-2003, 11:31 AM
Jo!! We're not new people! Your just putting a handshake (ok, a hug!) with a name and face you already know!! I just think it would be so cool to get to meet the people who's lives I invade every day.
06-02-2003, 12:42 PM
i totally feel like i know a LOT of you. but being able to give all those hugs i have IOUs on will be so awesome!
06-02-2003, 01:04 PM
I would like to come, but the last I heard, partners weren't invited. Unfortunately, because I need him with me when I travel long distances, if I can't bring my husband, I won't be able to come.
06-02-2003, 01:24 PM
Jo - don't be shy! We don't bite! :D
And Sheila, I think it was more of a "partners-optional" thing. I'm sure no one will mind if you bring your hubby with you! I'm just not bringing mine because he would be bored out of his gourd!
06-02-2003, 04:25 PM
shiela - yours is a special exception. i was expecting you AND your DH to come. =)
06-02-2003, 05:30 PM
I'm officially in Holly. Somehow, someway, I will make it there!
06-02-2003, 06:27 PM
Oh, good--thanks so much. I was concerned about that.
I'm in. I think it would be a great reward!
06-04-2003, 08:13 PM
:o :o :o COUNT ME IN I live in southern WI. What a great idea. Will watch this thread for info. you have some good ideas--kinda like a brainstorm session Sandy 260/260/150
06-05-2003, 12:50 AM
sandy - we're planning on writing a letter to oprah to see if she might want to meet us. if that doesn't go through, i think going to her show would be a fantastic outing!
06-05-2003, 01:44 PM
I was just reading this thread, and I am so exited that some of you will be getting to meet, how exiting & cool is that?? I hope you have tons of fun!!
Jo- I am the exact same way, I am really shy meeting people too, but if you have known them for a while, you should go for it, heck I would if I could, and I am only 5 hours from Chicago :)
06-23-2003, 10:24 AM
I was just reading this thread. I am only 6 hours from Chicago in Iowa so hopefully I can get to know more of you to join in 2004.
07-09-2003, 11:53 AM
Ladies: I am sure Sandi from Indiana knows all this, but I grew up about 90 miles from Chicago and have been there lots and lots and in fact am going there for my birthday in Sept. Just to give you some thoughts on things to do:
Brookfield Zoo is a huge and beautiful zoo
Museum of Science and Industry is one of my favs
Natural History Museum
Navy Pier has lots of cool things to do
Casinos -need I say more?
Woodfield Mall is pretty spectacular for shopping
Baseball games if you are fans either CUBS (the best!) or the White Sox
(you could rent a van and split the cost so you could go where you like. There would have to be ONE brave soul willing to drive in Chicago!)
Hope this helps and what a wonderful idea!

Pretty: Honey, you ain't a seen nothing until you try and drive in Memphis where I live. This is cell phone heaven and EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE talks on them while driving. They are also the big, get in left lane and at last minute decide they need off at the right hand exit and cut across 4 lanes of traffic and almost hit the barriers! We are #3 in auto accidents in the country! Our insurance rates tripled when we moved here from Indiana 2 years ago. I don't mind Chicago driving at all, but we were just up there to go to a wedding in South Bend and got stuck for 2 1/2 hours on 80/94 right around Broadway exit in the middle of the night. They were putting up some kind of overpass and had all the lanes blocked but one! It was awful! The only thing that bothers me is that my dh used to work in Chicago over by Midway airport off Cicero as a field service tech and learned to drive the "Chicago" way so scares the bahooties out of me! Luckily, we have electric reclining seats!
**I apologize for interferring, as I did not know you had folks that lived in the area and were better equipped to be "guides."**
Hope all you ladies have a whiz bang time together!
07-09-2003, 03:52 PM
No, no, no, you're not interfering! :) You know what "Chicago driving" is, that is great! I don't envy y'all in Memphis whatsoever!
07-09-2003, 05:27 PM
i've cut off lots of cabs and buses while driving in nyc... do ya think maybe i could handle chicago???
07-09-2003, 06:18 PM
Hey Jiffy if you can handle NYC, you can handle Chi-town! You just have to make sure to take your large economy size gonads with you!
Since my dh is retired military and we have lived EVERYWHERE, I will tell you if you have driven in Memphis, Detroit, NYC, L.A. then you can handle Chicago. They tend to be rude and so if you are rude right back you'll have NO trouble! I would say the biggest problem is the dad blamed truck drivers. They think they are driving Volkswagons and like to cut you off!
08-02-2003, 12:31 AM
I'm in that sounds like a great time. We have done stuff like this several times with the davesgarden.com members. That is a web site we belong to. I'ts always a great time. Kimberley will be coming too. She grew up about 30 or so miles north of Chicago in North Brook.
08-03-2003, 08:00 PM
I need to get on this and find us a hotel!!! :) :)
08-04-2003, 12:59 PM
well since DeeVine is back, i'd say let's talk with her!!
08-06-2003, 01:52 PM
I had thought the same thing. And I have a call into a friend who works at the Sheraton downtown!
08-07-2003, 11:19 AM
I'm pretty pumped about this.. Chicago is not too far from me at all :D
Do we want to share rooms? 2 or 4 people to a room? what is the max$$ everyone can spend on a room?
08-07-2003, 11:25 AM
room sharing is the way to go! hmm. max room $$? i'm gonna say $50-$75/night is my budget.
08-07-2003, 11:25 AM
I am really hoping for the Sheraton Chicago dowtown. It's right on the river, 1200 room hotel. Right bu Navy Pier, the boat tours and SHOPPING. It's very nice. I don't have a price yet, but I know we'll need to share to keep it reasonable. I hope to have some pricing very soon!!
08-07-2003, 12:16 PM
Sharing sounds great as long as it is my wife. LOL I can't wait to meet you all in person. I hope to be close to goal by then.
08-07-2003, 02:27 PM
08-07-2003, 02:27 PM
08-07-2003, 02:31 PM
let's start that again.. OUCH! a room at the Sheraton - basic room- is $399 a night!
Sandi.. have you looked at this one?
08-07-2003, 03:19 PM
i second that ouch.
and hey --- are we checking in friday night, saturday, etc...?
i mean, it would be good if most people could get there friday night so we could spend most of saturday and sunday doing our thang!
i know that i will get friday and monday off work so i can maximize my time. i'll fly in on friday morning/afternoon. i'll either fly home late sunday night or monday sometime.
so hopefully we can match people up in rooms depending on what nights they will be there.
oh -- and howie, unless there are special circumstances in which a spouse must accompany someone, we're pretty much sticking to 3FC members only. but hey... you could room with matt and si, right?
08-07-2003, 03:24 PM
jenelle gave me these hotels in a PM an while back, worth checking out:
08-07-2003, 03:43 PM
I know the rack rates are terrible!! I'm hoping I still have some pull there. It's SUCH a nice hotel!!
Holly, Thanks for the links!!
I'll be getting back to you soon!!! :D :D
08-07-2003, 04:08 PM
Howie's wife is a 3FC member. Remember gardenwife?
08-07-2003, 04:49 PM
i don't but i'll take your word for it. ;P guess she's coming too. heh.
08-07-2003, 05:43 PM
My wife has become a member here. But even if not why would you not include the spouse of people. I for one would not go if I could not bring my wife. However since she is a member there is not a problem there.
08-07-2003, 06:19 PM
we had thought it would be more of a bonding thing if it was just us and we were not hiding behind our spouses. like me, i might hang out with david too much and not meet everyone else! and if i was meeting all these people that david has no idea about, he's probably get bored, you know?
08-07-2003, 06:25 PM
Yes I guess I can see that. No worry here my wife and I are both very outgoing so I don't think we will be hiding behind each other. Plus I plan on being to thin for someone to hide behind. LOL Even if she was not a member I don't think she would let me go to Chicago with out her being that she grew up there and loves going back. We may make a vacation week out of it. We wanted to tour the Frank Lloyd Wright house while we were there last time and did not get to. Plus some of the art musems.
08-07-2003, 07:08 PM
that sounds fun howie! i don't hink i'll make a big trip of it but i am totally excited to be going even for a short time,.
i'd really love to be at goal then, too. 43 pounds. 8 1/2 months. i think i can do it.
08-07-2003, 08:19 PM
I'm very new here and don't know anybody yet, but I'm hoping by June I will know lots of you and will be excited about meeting you all! The only time I've ever spent in Chicago is at the airport waiting for connecting flights, but it sure looks nice at night when you're flying in and out of it :)
From what I've read in all the threads so far, it looks like 3FC members would be a fun and insightful group of people to spend some time with, so count me in!
08-07-2003, 11:16 PM
Welcome to the forum here...i'm sure you will get to know all of us quite well before the convention.
I'm totally impatient by nature. I have a hard time thinking about something that is almost a year away. I hope to be at my goal or at least fairly darn close to it by then. I was one of the few people who were voting for a convention date as early as possible.
08-08-2003, 09:27 AM
Alas Matt, being an impatient type of person myself I understand! One of the most frustrating things about this weight loss journey is after finally finding the motivation and seriously doing something about it, the impatience for results can sometimes be unbearable....but as they say, good things come to those who "weight". They also say patience is a virtue, but what's the point of going to Chicago if we have to be virtueous? Just kidding!! ;) Look at it this way, the convention being so far off means we can all hope to see less of each other by the time it rolls around! :)
10-05-2003, 01:09 AM
Are the plans for the convention still at full tilt? I'm asking because I have to start planning next year's holidays pretty soon and I think I'd like to take a whole week so I can see everything Chicago has to offer and perhaps take the train and really enjoy the scenery instead of just flying in and out.
10-05-2003, 08:33 AM
I'm taking myself off he list. My wife and I belong to a gardening group and we decided that we really want to make a vacation out of the gardening get together next year. We only have the funds for one vacation. I really would like to meet all of you but we have been doing this for the past three years and we don't want to miss it.

Howie - I'm sorry that we won't be able to meet you and your wife. Maybe another time.
SAPF - I hear ya!
10-13-2003, 11:52 AM
I was wondering if people, even people who aren't coming to Chicago, would be willing to give Holly stories and photos and tell how this forum has been a source of support. And then Holly can mention that a group of us will be in Chicago. That might get the attention of Oprah's staff. I think it's a pretty unique angle on weight loss, actually, plus so many papers and other media carry stories of all the bad things that can happen on the internet, and here we are with something good that comes from the internet.
Because they plan their shows in advance, I'd think that getting something to the show really soon would be important.
Just my 2 cents!
10-13-2003, 12:09 PM
I think that's a great idea Sheila - just think, if they knew some of our stories I'm sure they'd be impressed with us as a group and the forum as a great support centre. People like jiffypop, mthrgoos68, boiby, dowsx and jeanne to mention but a few (and I've probably spelled half their names wrong) would wow them and then there's the newcomers and oldtimers alike who may have given up if not for the support this forum lends. Heck, even if they don't want to build a show around us (or even mention us) but arrange tickets for us to see a show just for coming to their fair city - I say let's go for it!
10-13-2003, 12:16 PM
I won't be able to make the trip, but I'd be glad to share my story and photos. Just let me know.
Holly, if you need any help getting the info together, just let me know. I'll be glad to help in any way.
10-14-2003, 04:33 PM
I know that I have only posted a few times - but Chi-town is a lovely place for a convention! I live about 2 hrs away from there and its a great city to put on a pair of tennies and do a walk around!
Navy pier (shops, an omni-max, etc.) is nice and next to it are some beaches - as for cruises, in addition to the big boat with the dinner and lunch cruises - there is a river tour for about 10 bucks a person that lasts about 30 min
just down the lake front is the art museum and field museum. And Clark Street is a great street to walk up and down and shop -Marshall Fields is the big local store and they just celebrated a big anniversary this year (100?-150?) The Sears tower is neat - but expect a 2-3 hr line and while I've never been to Oprah I understand it is fun fun fun! There is even a tour company I have seen in town that runs a trolley (Yellow Duck? Lucky Duck? - something ducky!) and the do the whole tour - but I think the tennis shoe tour (mixed with a few buses) is much more fun!
I also think group speakers would be great - especially from within the group! I think so many of you are so wise! and a meet and greet would be fun too!
10-16-2003, 10:00 AM
Sounds like they'll be lots of activities for us to cram into a weekend Saidamom! I trust you'll be joining us for all the fun? :)
01-24-2004, 02:54 PM
Is this convention still in the works? I'd love to go!
01-25-2004, 04:14 PM
Absolutely!! Shouls I add you to the "coming!" list??
01-25-2004, 08:58 PM
Yes, please add me to the list and as much info as you have so far please.
01-25-2004, 10:38 PM
The very first post of this thread has all the details!!! ;)
01-26-2004, 07:41 AM
I'm sorry to say.. but there is no way I will be able to go to this. We need some new windows this summer and a new hot water heater very soon.
01-26-2004, 12:42 PM
I am MOST sorry to hear that!! But, of course TOTALLY understand!!!
02-15-2004, 06:27 PM
I'm planning my travel schedule (okay, that sounds pretty snooty, but I have to find a dad- and pet-sitter quite a bit ahead of time) so I'm just checking to make sure we're still on for June 25, 26, and 27. Assuming everything is still on, I'm going from Chicago to Norfolk, VA, so I need to figure out if there are any activities planned for Sunday so that I know when to schedule my flight or if I need to stay another night. Also want to make sure the block of rooms is just Friday and Saturday--is that right?
Did anyone who lives near the area pursue Jiff's idea of a personal shopper? I think that would be a lot of fun, although my DH might not agree with me. He can go do something else! If nobody lives close enough, and Marshall Fields has e-mail, I don't have a problem working on it as long as i don't have to make long-distance phone calls. I'm saving all my money to come to Chicago! :)
It's only four months away, and I'm getting kind of excited. Maybe the people who've lost quite a bit of weight could bring enlarged (if that works) before/after photos so that we could pass them around? I know I love looking at those at my Weight Watcher meeting.
02-15-2004, 07:03 PM
I'm getting excited too and the "convention" is great motivation for me to make goal by then. If we all bring before pics perhaps we can put together a makeshift montage while we're there and take a pic of it to be posted on the site. We'll also have to take some group shots of the attendees to go on the site too! I was always the one who insisted on taking the pictures and not being in any, yet I can't wait to be in a group shot with all of you!
I also need confirmation of the dates - I plan on staying Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, going home Monday morning. I still haven't decided if I'm taking the train to soak in scenery or flying in. Decision, decisions...
02-15-2004, 07:49 PM
I'm not going to make it to Chicago after all :(
My mom tries to plan a little "girls weekend with mom" each summer, and this was the only weekend that worked for the other 4 folks involved, so I'll be in Denver that weekend, thinking of you all having a ball in Chicago. Sorry.
02-15-2004, 08:52 PM
Daners - Boo Hoo!! I'm so sorry I won't get the chance to meet you!! :( Maybe next time.
As far as what we are doing on Sunday - NOTHING has been planned at all yet for any of the days. I guess I better get on that. I will start coming up with some ideas and create some polls. I hate to be the one who planned a boring weekend. I'd rather that we somewhat agreed on what to do.
I live just outside Chicago, so I can follow up on the Marshall Fields thing if calls need to be made, but Shelia, if you wouldn't mind getting the ball rolling with an e-mail that would be great.
The reservations are for Friday & Saturday night, but I think I might have extended it to Sunday. Let me double check on that. I plan on Coming into Chicago on Friday am to meet the early arrivals, and I plan to go home Sunday night.
02-15-2004, 11:17 PM
Just sent off that e-mail--hope I hear from them. If I don't, I'd be happy to contact Nordstrom's, which is a Seattle-based company so I bet I could call locally and arrange something.
02-16-2004, 02:39 PM
I got the following message back from Marshall Field's:
Please contact our Select Personal Shopping Service-
Do you want to do that, Sandi, or, since it's an 800 number, I'd be happy to work on this and take some of the load off your shoulders. Just let me know! :)

Sheila - that would be great!!!
I have a friend who does conventions downtown. I am going to try and get some good walking routes, so that we can take a walk in the morning.
Can I assume that we will *skip* the taste of Chicago that will be going on??

I just bought my train ticket. Anyone want to pick me up at the station ;) And I am right on with plan Miss Holly! I will Monday at 230 in the afternoon.

but that's about the amount that i can eat!!!! <sigh> if the majority decides not to go, i'll keep my mouth shut. honest!!!
hmmmm. maybe i could suggest that we could figure out where we wanted to have dinner by sampling??? no?? too much temptation??? oh well.. i tried!!!!!

I will go anywhere and do anything I so excited about getting to meet ya'll! I would even go to the "Taste of Chicago" , because ya'll are going to need a way to shut me up ;)

I would go to the taste if that is where everyone wants to go. I was just thinking that it would be too much temptation. Might set off a binge tone for the weekend. For me anyway. And it's very CROUDED. But I shouldn't assume. I'm open for everything. I just hope I can keep up with all of you!!! I know I can keep up with Chris in the mouth department, I'm just worried about you walkers!!

Just wanted to update you on the Marshall Fields personal shopper. They're up for it, and I need to call about three weeks before we're in Chicago. Depending on how many are game for this, they will divide us into smaller groups so we can get better service.
So I'll need to know how many people want to do this, and what day/time. Thanks!

I'm game for the personal shopper idea Sheila and I'm not adverse to trying out "Taste of Chicago". We have a similar thing in Toronto called "Taste of the Danforth" and we walked around all night burning calories and only sampling morsels - it was great fun!

Okay, need some positive thinking here. My usual Dad sitter hasn't returned my two calls. I'm getting worried. I'm going to have to start thinking about finding a new Dad sitter, which can be tough. The one I usually use does pets, too, as well as fix lunch for my Dad and deal with his medical stuff. I have a petsitter who comes in also, but I can't leave my Dad to fend for himself for four days. :(

I need a roomate, anyone up for it?
05-08-2004, 05:27 PM
Hey Miss Chris, I thought you were already rooming with Holly, did that change?
05-08-2004, 05:50 PM
Sheila - any luck yet?
Yes, Miss Chris - I thought you and Holly were sharing??
05-08-2004, 11:26 PM
No luck yet. I've already booked the (nonrefundable) flight and the room, but what would be worse than losing money would be missing out on all you guys. I'm starting to get a bit panicky. :(

You got time - I wish I had some ideas for you.
05-09-2004, 09:02 PM
Sheila - is there a University nearby? Maybe you could put an ad in the University paper or with their Career Center looking for a nursing student (or just a good-hearted college student) that could "daddy" sit for the weekend?

sorry, i told miss chris first and hadn't posted in here that i can't come.
it's mostly financial. not only can i not afford it, i'm filing for bankruptcy this week and it would hurt my case greatly if i were to take a trip. PLUS i'm having knee surgeru in aug/sept and that will cost me about $1000. i just can't do it, no matter how hard i try or how much i want to.
i am so sad. maybe we can do it again next year?
05-11-2004, 08:58 AM
oh, Holly...I was afraid of that. We will miss you greatly!! We'll take loads of pictures!!!!
05-11-2004, 02:48 PM
Oh Holly, we're going to miss having you there! Bummer!!
Miss Chris, as far as I know Jillegal might still be interested in sharing a room. I'm not sure though, so check in with her to see.
