So I decided I was going to get to normal bmi for New year's eve 2013. One year commitment to myself. Change my lifestyle and spend one year getting to where I want to be.

To make a long story just a little bit shorter, my delightful vacation has knocked me off the path of the beam by two pounds. I did well on vacation and ate reasonably and exercised but I didn't lose. So now I need to push myself to stay on track for March.

I usually exercise four day per week because I work 12-13 hour shifts the other three days and frankly I am done in at the end of those days. But we lost a patient :( last week and another has regained function :) so we are low census for a week or two so my work days will only be 9-10 hours.

It occurred to me on the treadmill this morning that I'm no longer afraid of running two days in a row. Stuff doesn't hurt when I'm done running like it used to (there's a huge NSV!).

So I decided to challenge myself to a 5k a day for the rest of March. See if I can run those two pounds off. And while I'm at it I'm going to try go take a couple of minutes off my 5k time. I am the slowest runner on the face of this earth and I can't run the whole thing without some walking yet, but there's nowhere to go but up so I'm going! Anyone want to come along?

You are amazing. I wish I could do 5K a day, right now I struggle to do 2K. I may not be able to join you, but I will be cheering you on from the sidelines!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies! Have you seen the Facebook post with pictures of " how I feel doing the plank (picture Jillian Michaels) and how I look doing the plank (picture a hippo)"? That's me running. But I just keep going! :)

That's so cool, Traci! I lift 3 or 4 days a week, and I can't fit in a 5K on those days, but I am trying to increase my cardio on off days. So I would love to join your challenge, if you don't mind if I modify. I will commit to running 5K on days I don't lift, but with one rest day a week
I usually just do 2 miles, so this will be good for me. Tomorrow - first 5K!

It's a little late for me to start for the end of March but if you are interested in doing this in April I'm in! I probably won't be running the whole thing every day but I could walk/jog the 5k a day :)

Good job improving your time! My friend and I just signed up for the Color Run 5K in July so this would really help me get in shape for it.

I am delighted to have some company for April! I walked my 5k outside with my husband this morning and enjoyed myself more than I ever do on the treadmill. Still having some knee pain so I'm not sure if I'll be running or walking each day in April but one way or another I'll be doing a 5k a day!:carrot:

Anyone else want to join us?

I'm just chiming in here to say how inspiring you are, Traci! I wish I could run a 5k at all nevermind a day! Hope your knee feels better.

I will join you, but I will be walking, not running as I have an old knee injury. I walk twice a day, 7 days a week so I think I make at least 5k each day even if I don't measure. I walk outdoors different routes but my favourite one is 7k (takes me 1h 30min) so I can estimate the other routes.

I'm training for summer mountain hiking, can't wait!

Every day is too much for me, since I'll be gearing up for marathon training. I need those rest days. ;) I can join you 4 days a week in April though. I've previously been doing 3 days per week, so this will be new for me.

Did my first 20k walk today, took me 3 3/4 hours and included a few small hills (usually I walk 5-10k, flat surface). I am really tired, but it was an enjoyable walk. Gearing up for hiking season!

When I am in school I don't walk, but I do on Fridays & Saturdays! I will join you on those days and work on improving my time. Right now I walk for about 41 minutes and average 3.2-3.25 miles. My goal is to consistently reach walking at 5 mph!!

We are out of class today so I walked!

Did another 20k today, but barely made 5k yesterday (Maybe even 3-4k). Going out again today to spend time walking with my mom (she can't handle as much long walks so I go separately in the morning)

Got my bodymedia fit band running, I've taken 24500 steps during my first walk of the day. The band is great it tracks my steps, calories burned, minutes of activity, heartrate, mets, and minutes of sleep vs. minutes lying down (sleep efficiency test). You wear the thing around your upper arm and it beeps when you hit targets that you have set. I love it.

Barely made 5 k yesterday. Still sore from wednesdays 20k walk. Might not make 5 k today but will make at least 10-15 on hills tomorrow.

Did 10k hills today so probably just a short walk tomorrow to recover.

First day at the mountains (although it was the easiest trail I know) planning to ramp it up over the next 2 months.

Yesterday I did absolutely no excercise, but was resting up for today when I walked 25k. Took me 5 hours, and included some small hills.

Going for another 1hr walk tonight with my mom, active recovery rules!

I took Sat completely off, to prep for Sunday and to get my lungs as happy as I could. Yesterday was a half marathon. Today was recovery, but I did walk about 2 miles. :carrot: Only 19 more days until my next half marathon. I probably will just walk tomorrow. I've got a 5k on Sat, so I need to get 1-2 easy runs in this week.

Wish I could run, but can only walk and hike because of my bad knees.

Walked 8k real slow today, sort of a rest day, and tomorrow will be another rest day so I can go big on Thursday.

Well today was Thursday, tried to go big, but came up short when my knee started hurting. Oh well, I'll just ramp up a bit slower. Did manage to walk 8k hills though. I'm happy with that. It's only my second time this season on tougher hills (mountain instead of road I mean).

I started with my usual walking pace for 5 minutes; then I did intervals of jog 1 minute, walk 2 minutes; then my usual walking pace for 5 minutes. :cb:

Today 5k walk so far 9742 steps and later gonna walk to the 4:20 cannabis rally to people watch, 1hr round trip, (but not gonna smoke, those days are over, until legalization!)

I did pretty well with this in April, now to get May off to a great start!! I am going to start upping the jogging intervals portion to 90 second jogging-90 second walking after my 5 minute warm-up walking and about 5 minutes of walking cool-down.

sluggerbean: so glad you finished and did well on your finals! You've been doing a lot more walk/jogs, 90 sec intervals is a great way to do it. I hope that when I get lower in weight my knees will allow me to do some walk/jog intervals. And 16 minutes of jogging, that's awesome!

Thanks, kayin!! I have been walking steadily for over a year now. I waited to do the walk-jogs until I thought my knees could handle it; and they are doing beautifully ~ no pain at all!!!

Next week or the week after I am going to up it to 2 minutes jogging-1 minute walking intervals. I am being very cautious because I don't want to injure myself or get discouraged.

Goal: Average >12,000 steps per day over the week

Sunday: 1hr 30min walk, 11,000 steps
Monday: 45 min walk, 6,200 steps
Tuesday: 3hr 40 min walk, 26,600 steps
Wednesday: 1hr walk, 7,500 steps

Going to try and get a big walk in tomorrow as it's going to be sunny!

Argh. I am stuck at the airport as my flight has been cancelled and I haven't made it to the gym at the hotel yet today. I am busting to run. I hope I get to my destination hotel this afternoon so I can get a run in! I am going to make this work.

I packed my gym kit in my carry on so if my bags do not arrive, I'll still be good. But smelly.

I ripped it up today as well despite a sore knee. Had best take a rest day tomorrow though.

I have had a few days off. My legs are hurting! I will probably take Monday off as well and do weights instead, ready to run again on Tuesday! But we'll see. Maybe I'll push her a little tomorrow and see what she can do! I like taking my legs out for a spin.

New week, new challenges. I've decided that towards the end of the week I will begin transitioning to 2 minute jog-1 minute walk intervals so that I can be doing those consistently starting next week. But today I stayed with the 90-second intervals. If I can stop eating crap & going over on calories, I might just break this plateau I am on!

Good on ya!! Shouldn't take long...and don't beat yourself up over 2 pounds. I dunno about you guys but I can gain 2 lbs while blow drying my hair ha ha

I always wanted to run but I just can't do it unless something large and scary is chasing me...and my hubby won't do it *ba dum cha!* hahah

Started doing some 2 minute jogs in the walk-jog today...OMG!! I thought I was ready for it! I did 3 separate 2-minute jogs: one in the middle of the walk, one in the last half, and the last interval. I will do so again tomorrow, but I am thinking that I may have to really gradually work up to having each jogging interval last 2 minutes.

Just did my first outside run and for heavier people, yes it is a lot easier than the treadmill! The biggest difference for me is air cooling. I sweated nowhere near as much. Yes, the incline did slow me down a bit but I still managed to break my fastest mile record in 9 minutes 59 seconds.

Had a big dinner out last night so woke up early and decided to push the run today! And it worked. I did my longest run ever (2.5 miles) in 25 minutes, 12 seconds and broke my fastest mile again in 9 minutes 11 seconds. I might be signing up for a 5k soon if I can get to 3 miles.

Legs are sore now though and my knee. I hope I can try again tomorrow. 2.5 miles would be a really nice new benchmark for me if I can keep doing that for the next few weeks.

Thanks Ian! And go you too! You seem to be getting a good mix of walking and running in, and be careful with those knees!

And yes, as you said before, I do go through shoes fast, the only thing is I have two pairs of the ONLY shoes I can wear without orthotics just waiting for me to wear, but they are too small now (I bought them at a lower weight and they're now discontinued)! So I'm stuck wearing shoes that have almost worn through the BOTTOMS! (and the tops)

But, oh well, more incentive for me to lose the weight. Didn't think it would be to fit into smaller SHOES though!

When I got home on Thursday, it was just too hot to run. :( So all I ended up doing on Thursday was the aerobics with weights that morning. I worked 12-hour shifts on Friday & Saturday at my new job so just the 20 minutes each morning of aerobics with weights. My last semester of LVN/LPN nursing school starts tomorrow and today is my rest day from planned, deliberate exercise.

My workout schedule for June should be:

Monday-Saturday AM - at least 20 minutes of aerobics with weights
Monday-Thursday PM - at least 20 minutes of jogging-walking
Sunday - rest day

Back to being crazy. Did 5k on the treadmill today with a much lighter guy on the one next to me looking at my machine and then me like I was a nutcase. He ran 2 miles at 5.7 mph then quit. I ran 3.2 miles at 6.1-6.3 mph. Granted, I was a sweaty mess. But pleeeaasse, no need to stare!

No running today for me. I am resting my legs for a 5k race I am doing tomorrow with a colleague who weighs 60lbs less than me. He is genuinely worried that I am not going to finish the race. But he cannot possibly beat a 5k a day guy/gal! I know his 5k time is about 30 minutes, so I am smelling victory.

I won the 5k race against my colleague! It was tough as he was really catching up on the last half mile, so I had to run faster than I have ever done before.

Any my nipple bled all over my shirt as I forgot to put on my bodyglide.

This continues to be madness. Why are we doing this to ourselves?

The heat index here this afternoon was in the dangerous range so I opted to ride my exercise bike indoors in the air conditioning! It should cool off some later in the week; I have to go out of town tomorrow after class, so it will be the bike when I get home.

Went on a 4 hour walk today, 25,800 steps. Boy am I ever tired! But I lost a pound in the process, probably all water (glycogen depleting a bit, which is usually good), but don't worry I was hydrating the whole time.

Wow Ian, those new shoes (and your determination) must be great!

I hurt my knee a bit from going too fast on hills (downhill), but am REALLY EAGER to start walking again! My plan is 3 days off then start slowly on Wednesday. I CAN'T wait. Walking is my calming place.

Sorry to hear that Kayin. My knee is a little sore too. I hope it gets better tomorrow and then I may try again. Else I will take a rest day.

I would like to say I like running but I find it very hard when I am doing it. I like the way I feel after it though and how it dramatically improves my fitness.

With the temperatures over 100 here, it is just too hot to work-out outside. I have been riding my exercise bike indoors. When the temps moderate some, I will resume the outside exercising.
