Default Lesson Learned - No More Alcohol

This weekend I drank quite a bit. I was at the casino and really wasn't thinking about everything I've read about how it contributes to weight gain. First I had a double shot of Jack, then Lord knows how many beers. Yesterday I got to the gym and weighed myself and I was at 422!!! That's 8lbs heavier than I was last Wednesday (I was 414). Let me also add that Fri. - Sun. my water intake was less than 4 cups per day, and its usually twice that or more.

I was upset about it all day, but I think it motivated me more than ever. I drank close to a gallon of water, had 4 protein shakes, and a large salad. Today after my work out, I weighed in at 417. I'm guessing a lot of that 8lbs may have been due to my water issue and the sudden drop over 3 days. The worst part was I was expecting to see a loss because I made good eating choices all weekend.

I plan to hit the gym hard this week to make up for that HUGE slip up and from here on out, I'll be refraining from alcohol. I won't let this minor set back beat me. It was a real eye opener though.

Good for you. I know exactly how you feel. I always am shocked to see the climb on the scale after one of "those" weekends. I'm not giving up my wine but intend to practise moderation for a while - maybe forver!

Were you snacking while drinking?
I know I can't drink with out food...I guess I'm trying to lessen the effects of the alcohol...not good.

Nope. You can't eat at the casino tables out here. I was mostly just drinking after lunch and before dinner.

Lessen the effect? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of drinking? I've been trying to find ways to increase the effects for years. LOL

Good for you for still making good eating choices! The results could have been worse if you had gone completely wild!

What's important is that you know what alcohol can do and you learned from it! I find the same thing happens, even when I have just a glass of wine--I gain weight. I don't think it's an actual gain, per se, rather just water weight. My legs swell, and it's not pretty at.all! If I choose to have a cocktail, I made sure it's just a cocktail and not a 1/4 of the bar (like a past me used to do). I also make sure I do it days prior to my weigh in so that I can make sure I can get rid of the swelling.

Good luck, though. You're doing great! ☺

I cut out all alcohol but wine when I first started trying to lose weight and kept it to a reasonable glass every other day or so. I was losing really slowly, or not at all, despite exercise and watching calories. When I don't drink (even a little) I am able to lose. It's frustrating, but I think it's almost impossible to lose when you are drinking. I'm not drinking most days of the week while I am losing. It seems to be helping a lot!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I did shed those 8 pounds.. well most of it. I weighed in today at 414.2, which is only a .2lb gain from last weigh in. I don't drink a lot, so stopping cold turkey won't be a problem. I've never liked wine and barely tolerate champagne, so I'm not going to drink until I hit my target goal.
