Default Good news about hair loss

I was at the hairdresser today asking questions about hair loss because I just hit 5 months on ideal protein and am noticing LOTS of hair in the shower drain.

She said first of all humans shed more hair in the winter - they are opposite of animals - and while I'm certainly seeing lots of hair in the drain it is OK/normal with the diet and it being winter

She also said that there is new hair growth starting all over my head - stubby little new hairs that are not old broken hairs but new growth. Which means hair is growing back. I must say this is a relief because I was starting to really panic.

She also said to stop worrying about it because her doctor told her that stress hormones accelerate hair loss.

I thought I would share because I know a lot of us are concerned about this.

Yes, I totally agree! I have been on the diet since the end of June and experienced a lot of hair loss a few months in and still now, although not as much. It was something I was really worried about at first but just got used to and tried not to think about it and focus on the positive aspect of my weight loss. And I too just noticed recently that I have short growth all over too-- like maybe an inch and a half long already. So I'm confident it will all grow back and despite the large amount it seemed like I was losing nobody ever noticed. I'd rather be thinner and healthier and wait for the hair to grow back, especially since I've waited/delayed long enough to get myself on track health-wise. No more excuses even if I go bald!

Default Thanks!

I find this very reassuring. I just started IP, and that is the one thing I really worry (and have nightmares) about. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this.

I was just going to suggest that Lexi! Ladies, you will love hair extensions.
They have different kinds out there. The clip on, hot press which might not be a good idea (your hair needs to breath as much as possible at this point.)

Honestly,Go to a salon catered to black women. They have different extensions and weaves. And they know BEST on how to use the products and hair in general. The amount of hours they go through. They are awesome women. If you get the clips, you can pay extra for them to attach the clips to the hair for you. (its a pain to do it yourself). And just make sure you spend that extra money and get real hair. Don't get the faux stuff. Real is more versitile.

I just noticed my hair thinning yesterday, but I hoped it would grow back eventually.

I'm glad to hear that it actually does! Thanks for posting.

I have read through many of the hair loss threads and am wondering if the majority of people experience the hair loss? Also, many people are stating that it will grow back after you stop the diet...does that mean it will grow back in Phase 4? Even in maintenance, aren't we really still on the diet or I misunderstanding it? Sorry, I'm just new to this...am almost 51 with hair starting to thin anyway and have a son getting married next year in June (2014). I was hoping to wear my hair longer for the wedding and had planned on letting it grow for that occasion.

I experienced thinning around my hair line and on the top of my head - I had already lost some hair due to my hypothyroidism so it was a bit of a shock! But I took a biotin supplement for most of my weight loss on IP, and now in maintenance I'm starting to notice a little regrowth coming in.
