My coach signed me up for a daily video. Basically everyday I get an email with a link to a video that has something to do with Ketosis. Yesterday, my first day was just a recipe, but today was a video on Ketosis. I found it super interesting and thought I'd pass it along.

http://idealcoaching.tv/wp/archives/4

Note: there's a 2 minute video near the top, which is alright, but what I really found interesting in fully understanding Ketosis, was the 8 minute video a bit further down the page.

At the end of the 8 minute video, they mentioned that tomorrow's topic is on which IP foods to be careful with so you don't go over your total carb intake for a day, which could knock you out of ketosis.

I'm a terrible and shallow person - or maybe Valentine's Vibes are in the air??... All I kept thinking of was "I'd like to be in Ketosis with YOU, dude in the blue shirt" (le sigh)....

...er, I mean... "very informative scientific information... please continue to share those links if you're able"

Thanks so much for posting this video. I had the general idea previously, as I'm sure many of us have, but this video did clarify a specific point for me. This is excellent! If acceptable, I'm sure we'd all love to benefit by any more links you'd like to post. wooo whoooo! I just finished my first week. Lost 9 pounds and 3 inches from my waist, alone. I also lost inches in my upper arms;) that makes me very happy. thx again for the video. best wishes to all of us on this next week !

I'm sure people will think I'm being negative but this video far overstates both the importance and the effects of ketosis. Not to mention that they talk about how they imply the body is only burning fat for fuel which is not the case, at all. Ingested protein is converted to glucose in the liver via gluconeogenesis. Finally, they apparently have no idea how muscle glycogen stores are lowered. These things are annoying. The best I can figure is that they do this as a means to enhance compliance.

Unfortunately the part that should annoy anyone is them talking about ketosticks. You cannot rely on a ketostick to tell you if you are or are not in ketosis. Completely unreliable. Waste of time and money. But if you like urine on your hands ... cool.

The last thing that is completely off base is aknowledging Michael Eades as the "first to recognize the importance of protein...". Eades has written some good stuff before he fell off the cliff, sold out, and started pitching rediculously overpriced supplements that do nothing. Regardless he wrote his first book in 1990 and Atkins wrote his book in 1972.

The only thing you need to worry about is following the program. Not getting into ketosis, not staying in ketosis.

I'm not doing IP, but have wondered what the heck it was since so many on 3FC are. This thread, with both video and debate, is fascinating! I just know I'll never be in ketosis since I eat on average from 100-200 grams of carbs a day. :D

I found the following videos by just trying different numbers at the end of the web address. Just put the number of the video at the end of this web address in place of the # sign - http://idealcoaching.tv/wp/archives/#. Since I didn't have time to try over 2,000 different numbers, I am sure there are many more I missed. Also, I didn't capture the full video titles, but I've named each one with a short description.

Ketosis in principle should equal lipolysis which is the breakdown of lipid droplets stored in fat cells. I do not know whether this is monitored directly in people since it is currently a very hot topic in basic research using cell cultures and mice. I interpret ketosis as a state where you can preserve most of your muscle mass while still loosing fat. This goes together with a low carb intake of approximately 50 g/day, although there are probably different numbers floating around. The weight loss has nothing/little to do in my opinion with ketosis itself, but with the reduction in calories. So, I think John is perfectly right (though I still think hormones are also important).

Somebody on this board (I forgot the name) pointed out the book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" by Volek and Phinney. They also published "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance". I am now reading both books and have to also dive into their published research. They seem to know what they are talking about. I suspect the "science" mentioned in the IP diet may in part derive from those studies. The books also talk about what happens in your muscles and why you can actually work out after adapting to the ketogenic state.

As for ketosis, the first time I read about it was as a treatment for childrens' epilepsy where it is used successfully as a preventive treatment. I researched ketosis then because it was also hypothesized by some outlier scientists to delay glioma growth, as the brain can adapt to running on ketone bodies, but aggressive brain cancer cells cannot because they have high energy needs that cannot be satisfied through gluconeogenesis. This idea is now also getting more mainstream and some clinical studies have been initiated (KetoLung). So ketosis/ketone bodies definitely impact a cell's metabolism. What may also contribute is that under low carb condition inflammation in the body is lowered. That alone may have an important influence on the generation and behavior of fat cells, cancer cells and the brain. But again, this is just becoming a major research topic and ketosis is still quite murky, as far as mechanism is concerned.

Lastly, John is quite right. IP markets themselves as "based on science". Therefore, they should provide the science. Anything else will turn any scientist into a shark looking for blood. Because science develops based on ideas being challenged. Nothing wrong with that.

Lolo the IP diet is simply a PSMF with phases and clever marketing. The science comes out of the 70s.

Also, make no mistake. You lose plenty of muscle while following the IP diet as written. Protein is LBM sparing and ketosis does reduce the amount of carbs needed to retain muscle by the ketones passing the blood brain barrier but you're going to lose muscles you're not using in particular in a steep caloric deficit.

Regarding hormones of course they are important but putting hormones as the culrprit is putting the cart before the horse.

You eat less - insulin output is reduced.
You lose weight and insulin sensativity is increased.

Protein by itself releases plenty of insulin and whey more than any other protein.
