Ideal Protein Diet - Anyone not lose because of illness or antibiotics?

I know I've been whining about this here and there, but I'm really starting to get discouraged! I need to find someone else that this has happened to!

I started on P1 on 1/2/13 to loase an additional 10 lbs from my first goal. I have been 100% OP since then. When I started I had a sinus infection and was taking Augmentan. A few days later I was even sicker so I went back to the doctors and they put me on Avelox. In the meantime I found out on this forum (and from my new info sheet on Avelox) that I shouldn't be taking Magnesium, Potassium, or Calcium supplements while taking the antibiotics because it lowers their affectiveness. Of course I WAS taking these, which would explain me not getting better.
I started the Avelox and stopped all my supplements, this was 1 week ago today and have 2 more days to go.
During this time, I actually GAINED 3.5 lbs the first week. Right now I think I'm down maybe 1 lb total.

IP is a pretty restrictive diet to follow. I'm having some MAJOR issues following protocol and not losing all.

So ... has anyone seen this with themselves? Did you lose a large amount after getting better and being off the antibiotics? Did I just totally WASTE 2 weeks of dietting?

Please help me keep the faith here!

Thank you - did you have a really big loss the week after being ill or after going off the antibiotics?

I gain weight when I am inflamed. In my case it is the inflammation itself that triggers the weight gain. Short term it is probably just increased fluid retention due to the inflammatory reaction. Certainly on IP there cannot be any gain in fat tissue at the amount of calories you take in. I would not worry.

Yes - my logical side of "1 lb 3500 calories" makes me believe I couldn't possibly have gained any fat weight. I do question of whether I'm losing fat and it's just water ... If I new I was still losing fat and it's simply the inflammation, I probably wouldn't be so upset ....

You could be both losing fat and retaining fluid (inflammation) at the same time. Give your body a chance to heal and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised!

We always talk about losing "weight" but really, we want to lose FAT!

Oh I agree - I'll be thrilled if this turns out to be that I'm losing fat but just increased inflammation. I can deal with that!

I was sick from New Years until middle of last week. Scale stayed right around 162. Wouldn't budge even though I was 100%. I took a round of steroids last week and wrapped that up Friday. I weighed in today and had a whoosh of 8 lbs. So, my body made up for it once I started feeling better. I'm sure I must have been retaining water and had some inflammation going on and who knows what the steroids did. I just tried not to think about it with the thought that everything would work itself out once I started feeling better:D

I lost 2 pounds but quite a few inches also. I've noticed lately that I haven't lost much pound wise but my body shape has really changed.

I had a nasty cold right after Christmas and never really got better. So my awesome cold turned into pneumonia. Needless to say, the feeling of a sumo wrestler sitting on my chest, feeling like i'm not getting enough oxygen in, my chest feeling like it's on fire when i cough, general exhaustion and feeling like crap. When i was on IP before, whenever i was sick, i just cheated and ate "comfort food". I stuck to my guns this time and stayed on protocol. I made myself some chicken and veggie soup and have been dealing. I have noticed that i have gained a pound back and haven't lost any weight in a couple days. I've been drinking a lot of herbal tea and water and have made sure to take all my vitamins. I'm hoping once my body gets back to normal i'll see the "whoosh" you all talk about!

Its water weight, not fat. Stay off the scale until you are well.

Thank you all!
sahmommy2 - that is what I needed to hear. Today is my last day on antibiotics so I can resume my cal-mags, vitamins, and potassium starting tonight.

Brittstar - I hope you feel better soon ... remember that if you're on any antibiotics, you shouldn't be taking your supplements. My first round of antibiotics didn't work at all because of the magnesium. I found soup to be my comfort food - mixed with veggies and the such.

lisa - I agree it couldn't possibly be fat - my biggest concern that I wasn't losing any additional fat underneath all the water. I see you're approaching onederland! Congratulations! So what's you're gift on goal 5?

WI is today at the clinic -and just from yesterday to today I do feel a little "lighter" so we'll see!

Started feeling better Wednesday and Thursday, woke up this morning feeling AWFUL! I caught whatever my boyfriend brought home from work (head cold) and now i'm right back where i was. I haven't lost any weight in at least a week and i'm getting very frustrated (in fact the scale says i've GAINED two pounds). I know it's because of being sick, but it's annoying. I've been really good about taking vitamins and drinking a ton of water and tea (decaf). I'm pretty sure my immune system is close to dead, considering i've been sick for three weeks. Any suggestions to try and kick this???

This was my first full week. I started with a whopping sinus infection the day I began the program....only lost 2.2 lbs in spite of being 100% compliant. It was a bummer to start off that way. :( I finish z-pack tomorrow..and have weigh-in again on Thursday.

I too woke up with the crud (stuffiness, sinus pressure, sore throat and heavy chest) yesterday morning. Oh and not to mention TOM. I am barely getting all the packets and food in right now. All I really want is homemade chicken noodle soup. I know IP has theirs but I want mine I usually make. We are getting into the busy season at work with Mardi Gras and SuperBowl coming in and I hate feeling like Cr*p!!! My scale hasn't moved in a bit but I know I am not feeling 100% and that has alot to do with it. Hopefully by WI I'm doing much better.

Why not make some homemade veggie soup? I use 3 cups broth, and measure out 4 cups of veggies (rutabaga, zucchini, celery, chopped cabbage, maybe a little tomato paste). If I cut the cabbage into thinner ribbons it kinda tricks my brain into thinking they are noodles :) I season with plenty of fresh garlic and herbs. Simmer until the veggies are soft and split into 2 servings, each one is your 2 cups veggies AND it's yummy home cooked soup.

I made chicken soup. It's my go-to cold/crud cure.
No noodles or rice but measured veggies.
I bought a rotisserie chicken, took the meat off the bone & used the carcass to make broth. Meat measured 1 lb so I knew it was 2 dinner portions.
I put in 8 c veggies so I could have it twice/day for 2 days.
That took care of veggies and meat.
Then I had orange drink and pink lemonade packets b/c citrus tasted best.
There is something about chicken soup that is so soothing when I have crud. I'll make myself make that even if I need to rest between every chop (or try to get hubby to chop for me)

Get well soon to all with crud and stay off the scales. Water weight WILL be there. We get inflammation when we are sick.

I made "cream" of broccoli with chicken last night for dinner. I also usually only want soup when i feel gross. I made stock with half a leftover chicken and spices (simmered for an hour and then cleaned the carcass and chopped all the meat up). I simmered four cups of mixed broccoli and cauliflower, a stalk of celery, lots of herbs, and garlic with about five cups of the stock. I pureed the majority of the broth and veggies (i'm thinking pureeing veggies is going to be my savior on this diet) and then added it back to the pot. I thinned it out with a few ladles of stock and added the chicken in. It was thick and creamy with no cream or milk. So so good! My boyfriend had some and topped his with cheddar cheese for a "cheddar and broccoli" soup. Even he loved it!

For what it's worth, when I took an 10 day antibiotic a bit over a year ago, I gained a pound a day during the time of the month I usually see big losses. It was almost comical, but it wasn't. My feet were becoming balloons - it was the antiobiotic.

It took about a week to pee it all out, but then I did and then some more of the weight I was "truly" losing while on the antibiotic too.

To all you lovely soup chefs out there...I'm planning to make some veggie soup for lunch today. Turnips, celery and cabbage in low sodium chicken broth and I thought I'd throw my IP Rotini in there for good measure!

My question is, having never made this before, when do I put each ingredient in? I know I should chop all the veggies to be roughly the same size so they cook evenly, but should I put the turnips and celery in first, cook until almost done, then put the cabbage in last? Throw everything in together?

Help please! Thanks

Question: Sooo..is homemade chicken or turkey stock OK? I've always made my own soups. We actually like the broth with vegetables like mushrooms, celery carrots and wild rice...I would of course omit the carrots and rice now....maybe add zuchinni at the last min or cabbage..... I have not seen homemade stock listed on any of the things I checked and read from the official Ideal site. Canned stock that is low or no sodium still has both calories and carbs.....are those of you making your own soups further along and in something other than phase 1?

Thanks...

The broth I found is an organic, low sodium chicken broth that comes in a box. It fits the requirements of the Phase 1 sheet being 0/0/0 with only 5 calories per serving.

I know many IP'ers make their own homemade broth using the bones from a whole chicken but that's too much work for me!

My thoughts (disclaimer: I am NOT able to do a nutritional analysis of this)
The bone broth I make is made from a chicken carcass and some celery scraps. It would be 0 carb (or close), 0 sugar, and there is no fat to skim.
So, I use it as 0/0/0 and reading about bone broth I KNOW it is healthier than whatever residuals the food industry chooses to make their packaged broth from. My chickens are usually free- range and have been fed non-GMO feed (unless I'm super sick and pick one up at the grocery store on the way home)

If you make a veggie broth, I'm GUESSING you'll have residual carbs in the broth that will be hard to measure. But I know that some folks use veggies in their homemade broth and it hasn't seemed to slow any losses.

well..your singing my song ...many of you. I did not know to stop the supplements while taking antibiotics...It would have made sense for me to stop my start of the program for a week to 10 days. I do wish the coaches would suggest that. They knew I was harboring something when I went in for my weigh in at the start.

Have been on a z-pack which is only 5 days..but lasts or 10. My weight has barely budged. I lost 2.2 lbs the first week and next weigh in is Thursday. I see on my home scale...no change. I stopped the supplements until the 10 day mark...OK..so won't be surprised ( but will be disappointed) if there is no loss at all this week. I do feel like I might be losing inches. Hope that is not wishful thinking....I like the thought once the antibiotics clear my body...I'll see that whoosh effect I keep reading about! Have been 100% compliant....meeting a friend for lunch today....having a spinach salad...I'ver already scoped out the menu...

Hope you all are starting to feel at least a little better....
After stopping my supplements for 10 days of Avelox (after 2 rounds of the Z pack that didn't work) - I feel much much better. Now it's just a matter of warding off all the bugs that everyone else has!

65x65 - I hope the z pak works for you, but don't be surprised if it doesn't because of the supplements. At least you still lost a bit. I was like berryblonde and gained a little over 3 lbs during mine.

Soups were my go too! Piping hot and full of "crushed up" veggies!

I didn't have a huge whoosh after stopping the antibiotics but I have to be realistic that I am close to goal again and will lose slower.

I know this is going to sound like a complete rant, but i've been off the antibiotics since last Wednesday. I started feeling a lot better Saturday. I have gained three pounds even though i've been totally OP. I know it's probably water weight, but where is this "woosh"??? I've been on the diet for three weeks at this point and i was hoping for a little more of a loss (not just 8lbs minus the three that the scale says i've gained). I've been diligent with my vitamins, drinking plenty of water, getting the right amount of salt, eating my salads, etc. etc. etc. Any suggestions? Words of encouragement? I'm basically panicking that i haven't lost anymore weight...

For the question about cabbage - when I am adding cabbage to soups, it is the last thing I add. It cooks very quickly.

Britt - do NOT lose hope! Hang in there! You are not doing anything wrong and you will lose on this diet if you follow the protocol, though occasionally something like an illness or time of month will bring things to a halt. At the end of the day you will average the 2-4 per week they advertise.

I did IP about two years ago and lost a decent amount of weight. However, I never had anything like this happen during those eight months. I know I'm only three weeks in, but I have a good amount of weight to lose and am getting nervous. I've had so many failed diets since I did IP the first time, and am committed to make a complete lifestyle change. I just need this to work. I'm tired of feeling the way I do about my body.

Ali - don't panic ... I was on Avelox during my 3rd attempt at the antibiotics and it really did help so that is the good news! Make sure to time your supplements (or don't take them at all) so that they don't interfere. I believe the Avelox papers specifically say NO magnesium supplements at all - make sure to read them.

I didn't lose weight while on the antibiotics BUT I don't think I would have anyway. I stayed OP for an additional 2 weeks after being off the antibiotics and lost a very minimal amount of weight. Since then they've switched me to the cellulite reduction (because this is my very last few pounds) and that helped rev things up. So I think you might actually still lose unless you're in those last few pounds.

The big thing is to let your body heal ... I don't think the body works as well burning the fat unless it's already in a healthy state. So, it might benefit you to maybe do P3 while on the antibiotics to get good and healthy and then go back to P1 when you done. Your body just might burn faster and better at that point anyway.

Good luck - you'll be fine, just listen to your body!!

Okay, this is really interesting...I wonder if I should try P3. You have certainly given me something to think about. It wouldn't bother me so much if it wasnt 4-6 weeks. I would hate to do that much P1 for nothing.

It turns out she wrote the RX for Cephalexin. Is the magnesium thing with all antibiotics?

I really appreciate your feedback! Thanks a million!

If you have an illness being treated with antibiotics, there is certainly inflammation associated with it. Inflammation is WATER WEIGHT!
You could continue to lose fat and it might (or might not) show up on the scale.
Definitely treat your health first! And stay on plan.
I was near tears (and in tears) a month ago when I cut out almost all of the IP foods b/c of the soy and gluten content, due to the hypothyroidism I developed. It all worked out.

It will all work out. The world isn't ending. You may not get the scale feedback you desire for a month (or you may) but KNOW you're still headed to a healthier you!
