Hi Everyone,

I joined and finished a 1000 mile challenge for the year 2012. I am challenging myself once again to walk 500 miles and do Elliptical for 5000 minutes this year.

I don't care how you accumulate your miles, just join me :) Let's get moving!!

Remember to reach 1,000 all we need is to average little less than 2.75 miles a day. Very doable!

I'd like to give it a try. I walk/run 10-12 miles a week, but I wanna try to walk a couple miles on days I don't run. If I add 7-8 miles a week, that'd get me to 1000. Mostly I sit on the couch on winter days I don't run. In summer I sometimes bike on 'off' days. But having this goal will get me out there walking I am sure. BTW, roughly how far is 10,000 steps?

I haven't forgotten this-- just still sick with this lousy cold. No energy, no voice, lots of cough and leg aches... I will get started though and then have to do some making up.

This will certainly be a challenge. I did want to clock up 500 miles as one of my goals for the year but challenging myself too 1,000 sounds pretty amazing too. I need to start getting back into walking soon. During the summer I was walking 5 miles a day for a good few weeks. Now I'm back at college and the evenings are dark and dull, I stopped and use my stepper at home. I read somewhere that 2000 steps would be the same as one mile which I would do when I'm using it. I've exams starting tomorrow for a week and a half. Then I've two weeks off where I want to kick start these 1,000 miles outside as well as what I get with the stepper. Can't wait for the long evenings to return. Sum, I watched the 2012 thread and you are such an inspiration! :) Good luck everyone this year clocking up the 1,000 miles.

Count me in!

I am pretty old (57) but started jogging last spring. I can run 2 or 3 miles at a time, but I should not do it every day, so I try to ride my bike on the days I don't run.

It's a challenge for me to run 30 miles a month because I teach school and I'm in two orchestras and a bluegrass group, so lots of evenings are taken up with practice or performance. But if I combine the running miles with some biking miles, maybe I can do this. :)

This was from one of EZ's first post on his original thread for 2012. Just about anything that gets you and moving counts!

"and biking and hiking and wheel-chairing and swimming and surfing and mountain climbing and......and....and....."

I usually ride my stationary bike about an hour a day everyday. On cheat days I only ride 30 mins, I just don't feel right when I don't ride it now. Too bad the mileage reader is broken. But I assume I am riding over 3 miles a day atleast. I would like to start running or even walking but it's so cold out, and the cold makes me so itchy. So I will continue with this challenge in mind!

If you go to a fitness site like fitnesspal.com you can log in you bike riding, and a lot of other activities and it will figure for you your miles. Hope that helps

1/3 - 30 Mins of Stairs & Walking on my work breaks - This was a scheduled rest day
1/4 - 30 Mins Firm Cardio Inferno, 15 min walk & stairs at work
1/5 - 3 mile walk @ Stone Mtn.
1/6 - 3 mile walk @ the Mtn

I don't know if it was mentioned before or not but it would be nice if you go back and edit your post to add the miles each day, that way the post don't get out of hand and way over 500 posts in no time. You can still make posts about comments too but if you just log in your miles it makes it nicer to just edit the post. Gosh, was that confusing?

We can do that, or we can just start part #2 etc. Unfortunately, from experience, many will drop out. I hope that is not the case this time around!!! -- I was left to post my progress alone for many months last year. SOOOO I challenge each one of you to stay on path :D :D

I was wondering how to get a nifty progress tracker like sum38.

Also, I am having 2nd thoughts about this goal. 2.75 miles a day is what it works out to be. That sounds do-able, but that has no allowances for days off, or days with other fitness activities. I just totalled my logs and discovered I only walked and ran about 480 miles in 2012. HELP I need encouragement/strategies/etc.

I'm in! One of my running goals this year is to hit 1000 miles. :D I'll probably just update mine once a week. Between being a full time student, working part time as an undergrad research assistant, an hour commute, and having 2 kids in elementary school, I don't have much free time during the week. ;) I weigh in Sat mornings before I run, so I'll just add updating this at the same time. :smug:

Hi Everyone, good to see so many committed to a year long goal.

juneum, those winter days is what inspired me to buy a Striv and challenge myself to 10,000 steps a day. It depends on your step distance but 10,000 steps is around 4 1/2 miles. Stay & set your goal for 500 miles, but STAY!

His firefly, can't wait till I can add tickers to help me keep track of miles and pounds lost.

Tabbycat, you are 57 years young - same as me! I am impressed with your running btw.

Karen, if I edit my post does it show up as the last post on the thread or does it remain where I first posted it? I think I'll start riding my indoor bike.

Thank you sum38 for being flexible with starting a new thread if need be.

Thanks for the encouragement and suggestions, esp Karen31 and Workinglikeadog. It is a good suggestion to look at other activities as "walking equivalents." I will probably go with some formula like 4 miles on the bike=1 mile walking. I like to log a fair number of bike miles in the summer and it hardly seems fair to count bike miles equal to foot miles.

I'm back now after exam time and getting back on the wagon now that I've two weeks off from college.

For every 15 minutes of exercise (on average it takes me 15 minutes to walk a mile), I will count it as a mile. However, I've included weight lifting also in my calculation of 22 miles for this month so far. I don't know if that would be cheating. :p Maybe I won't add in weight lifting from now on.

I've decided to not count it because as of February, I'm going to be going by sets/reps rather than time. I've also reduced my 1,000 to 750 because I really don't believe I can get 1,000. :) I'm doing well so far, have gotten 30 miles in January with still a number of days left to clock up some more miles.

I'm about to return to college for my last semester of college and would love to achieve 30 miles per month from February to May. I would be ever so pleased with that achievement if I manage it. Now that the Winter is slowly leaving us, I'm hoping I will be able to go out and go on walks again. The cold and myself just don't agree. :dizzy:

EDIT: Best of luck getting 2013 miles in 2013! Very nice idea. :)

I hit the 60 mile mark today with a walk in the snow. It was more pleasant than I anticipated. And I am feeling positive about my next weigh in.

On a negative note, how did I get on the Victoria's Secret catalog mailing list, and is that really our culture's ideal of beauty? Feed those girls a sandwich!

I just discovered the "Walking to Mordor " Challenge Thread. Which is sort of kismet, because The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers was on the video at the fitness club yesterday. I think this is kinda wonderfully hilarious as a goal. Check out the thread if you too revel in this sort of nerdiness. I will stick with 1000 miles for now. Mordor is a little farther.

I've been tracking on my blog... so here is everything so far...

I have an Elliptistrider, but am not sure on what goal I have for that...

I do want to hit a minimum of 1000 miles though! I'm planning on increasing the distance as I go... but sticking with 4 miles/day when the weather cooperates and the Elliptistrider when the weather stinks...

Hello Walkers. The month is almost gone and we've had some nasty weather. I got out once when the back roads had firmed up and temp hit mid 40's, it was surprisingly nice. I wore a warm coat and was neither warm nor cold, guess I'll have to venture out soon to get more fresh air and sun.

Welcome - Gettin Fit, Junem and KimL

Gettin fit, hop you got to the mall or have been able to do more dvd exercise videos. I live in the country so about half of my exercise in winter is to dvd's.

Junem, Yeah to 60 miles, keep it up!

KimL, Nice goal and good consistancy, you go girl.

Hi y'all. Tabbycat here.

It looks like I will finish the first month at about 60 miles. I know I have to average over 80 to reach 1,000 for the year, but like many of you, I know I can log a lot more miles in the summer.

I like to get my miles by jogging, but at age 57, I can't run every day (I'm in my first year of running). So I have to count my bicycling miles too or I'll never reach 1,000.

Hi to all Milers, we had a sunny day and I got a mile walk in outside today, fabulous.

Karen31, so does this mean you are feeling great again, hope so? I know you moved more than 3 miles in Jan, you need to wear a pedometer. I love my Striiv and highly recommend it. You can buy one on Amazon or go to Striiv's site to see how it works.

stlrsgrl, 92 miles for the month is pretty good! Does your fitbit tell you how many step and miles you move throughout the day? I wear my Striiv all day and aim for 10,000 steps a day which is a 4.5 mile min/day(except for Sunday my rest day). I do cardio 4 days a week and even on lifting days=circuits I get cardio, so morning exercise really helps to get me to goal or beyond each day.

I got 150 miles for January which averages 4.8 miles per day.

Keep Moving!:carrot:

Workinglikeadog-- Yes, thanks for asking! I think my hubby and I are finally done passing this bug back and forth! Really feeling good now. I am sure I moved more than 3 miles too but was only counting the "intentional" execise I did since most of January the best exercise I got was moving from the bed to the couch and back again!! LOL!! And that was S---L---O---W!!!
I'll check into that Striiv. Thanks.

Thanks for the welcome, workinglikeadog.

I have osteopenia so I need to do weight-bearing exercise. I figured I might as well jog as walk and get it over with faster! LOL Last March I started and I couldn't even go one mile without stopping to walk. It took 30 minutes to go two miles. But I kept at it, trying to increase the distance I trotted and not worrying about how fast I was going. After I got to the point where I could trot two miles without stopping to walk, I started watching the clock. And when I could do two miles in 25 minutes I decided I wanted to do a 5K fun run, so I started doing three miles on some of the days.

My first 5K was terrible. I did everything wrong. I didn't eat or drink that morning, and I took aspirin on an empty stomach for my morning back pain, and I didn't know to bring sunglasses or a cap because I had been running at dusk, and I started out too fast because I was running with the others at their pace... and it was a hot humid Houston day with temps in the high 80's. I finished in just under 40 minutes and felt sick all day.

When I got home I read online about running a 5K and realized all my mistakes. Two months later I ran another one in 37:50, and two months after that I ran one in 36:37. I don't win anything but I always check the ages of those who beat me (in the 50-59 group) and so far all the faster runners are younger (in their early 50's) :) I need to find a 5K that has 5-year age categories instead of 10-year, because I'm 57.

I admit it took a long time before running became something I find pleasure doing, but I like the way I feel after I run, I love the glow my complexion has for the hour after I run, and I like the fact that I have lost almost 20 pounds and not been hungry in the process.

Karen, the fitbit is so easy, I love it and I only have to charge it bout every 3 weeks or so. Workinglikeadog, Yes my fitbit does tell me steps and miles and also how many floors I have climbed. I too, aim for 10,000 steps but very seldom make it. I try tho thats the point.

Also with the fitbit, you can friend other people who have one and see who is being more active, little friendly challenges and such.

Good Afternoon to ALL &

Annie, your running story is incredible. I am 57 also. I am thinking about your slow but steady progress & wishing you were here to kick my butt into action.

stl-I think having your goal at 10,000 is great. I do have to work harder to reach goal in the winter, but that was the reason I got a nice pedometer - to be more accountable year round. Striiv also has hookup with friends.

Hi to Karen, Kim, Dreamer, Junem, Gettinfit, curlysue, Nickel, Isabella, curvy, chubbiegirl, neverl, hisfirefly, motherm and Sum38.

Tabbycat. Thanks for your running history. I am about ten years younger but no faster than you. I am sometimes self concious about my slowness, but its funny how i have mostly gotten to the place where I don't care how it looks to others. I am out there because I like how it feels, for me.
I am a huge proponent of the C25K schedule for beginning runners. See/google Cool Runnings web site. And I am in favor of signing up for timed, organized runs occassionally because they create milestones (no pun intended) in one's fitness career.

I never even changed out of my night gown today. Bleh!!! I am feeling a little better just now and disgusted with myself for having such a slug's life today. Getting seven or so inches of snow tonight locally so spring time activities seem a long way off.

I know i'll feel better and get back to the miles soon enough, but overall i feel stalled.

Just thought that I would pop in for a minute. Gary (EZ Money) who started these 1000 mile runs several years ago-- lost his battle with cancer last night. He was loved so much by so many of us and will be missed. Thought that you might want to know this. There is a thread open in General Chatter if you would like to say something

Though I never crossed paths or threads with Gary, I will bet he touched and continues to touch many people's lives. Funny how lives well-lived have ripple effects like this. Peace to his loved ones.

Nice walking Sum38, I like seeing your day to day progress, so will do the same. With gardening, a windbreak and a yard some days I get a lot of walking in. The day or two after I am having to recover. A bit behind on my goal for the year, but still very doable. Alyssarinker, welcome to this thread and hope you get some good walking in. The main reason I started daily logging was wondering how much I walked in the summer and wondering how little I seemed to move during the winter. I was looking for more accountability.

I wish I had found this back in Jan! I'm gonna start from May 1 and see how much I can do. But with a twist!

I stole the idea from someone's signature I saw the other day (sorry I can't give credit where it's due, but I can't remember who it was). I'm a huge Lord of The Rings and Tolkien fan, so I am going to start walking from Hobbiton to Rivendell (485 miles) and once I meet that goal, I am on to Lothlorien (an additional 462 miles) and keep going in that manner till I reach Mount Doom!

The nerd in me is loving this... :) If anyone is interested in checking it out I found the info here: http://home.insightbb.com/~eowynchallenge/Walk/walk.html

We are almost to the half year and I am changing my goal for the year from 2013 miles in 2013 to "10,000 steps/day for a year". So I am aiming for straight walking miles(10,000 steps=4.5 miles x 365) . New goal is 1642 miles for the year. There are lots of good pedometers that record at any angle - just avoid the cheap ones under 50, they can be very inaccurate and aggravating.

I bought a Striiv and love it. It records steps, miles, stairs, cals, mins of activity and has trophies and "My land" game to motivate you. If you sinc the striiv to the computer it donates to three causes for your walking and keeps you updated plus nice overall achievements. Some days I am amazed how much I have walked while doing chores and gardening. Let me know what you end up with. I bought my Striiv on Amazon.

Ajlee33, There are many ways people count exercise for miles, you can find information charts on-line but really we are just here encouraging each other to keep moving. If you don't want to figure out distance and do a true mile, a good way is to make 20mins = 1miles or 30mins =1mile.
I've seen a huge variety even within a thread with guidelines. I think it's great you have some goals and have continued activity. :carrot:

Made my goal of 10,000 steps a day for a year. :carrot:

Need a new goal with over two months to go, so going to change my walking goal back to the original goal of 2013 miles in 2013. Time to start that winter exercise regime!

Keep Moving ;)

Congrats workinglikeadog.

Do you plan on walking your 2013 miles in indoors or outdoors? That is impressive! I am struggling to get my 1000 miles in. I took the first 3 months off; that did not help...lol

Thanks Sum38, I would like to do both indoor exercise and a bit of outdoor walking as the weather permits. This is a hard time for me because after farming/gardening is over - I just would like to hibernate. Your milage is great for taking 3 months off. I also want to congratulate you for getting your weight below 150, Yahoo! I may have to change my ticker if I can't shake a pound that has found it's way back, darn. Keep up the good work.

1830 miles done, 183 miles to go. Not going to make 2013(still nice to have the goal). Working on getting a good winter routine. Too cold for walking outside and have a morning aerobic routine. Found some great yoga dvd's, now I just gotta figure out what time of day to do it and how many days per week.

I took early December off from the exercise routine; don't know why exactly. Combination of stress and mourning the passing of my MIL maybe. Won't make 1000 miles obviously, unless you count every bike mile as one.

1930 miles done. Not going to achieve my original goal of 2013 miles but that's O.K. I think 10,000 steps a day/every day is a better goal. I've had a lot of light days in December, not good for weight control or motivation.

So glad to see so many members on this thread for the whole year - yeah, we all get a thumbs up for perseverance. Sum38, I hope you intend to host this thread again in 2014.

Blessings to All and Keep Moving :dancer:
