Chicks up for a Challenge - "Every Day" 21 Day Challenge 2013 (Ongoing, Newbies Welcome)

It works like this: you decide you'll do something for 21 days straight, every single day, so keep it doable. Then you count ....one through 21.....and if you flub it, you MUST go back to zero and start over again. Everyone will be on different days. You can start anytime. At the beginning of the challenge you declare what level it is -- Level 1, 2, or 3. Level 1 means you feel it's a relatively easy challenge for you and means you only give yourself ONE pause day (see explanation of pause days below). Level 2 would give you two pause days and so on...
And taking NO pause days is what redballoon called "aceing a challenge," as in "I'm aiming on aceing this one!" Yowzah!! :cb:

With a pause day you pause in your counting and continue the next day with the number you left off with. Pause days are NOT substitutes for days, i.e. Day 12 -- Day 13 -- Pause Day -- Day 14..... I suggest taking a pause day late in the game (better to go back to Day 1 early on) if you need a break or screw up when you're well into the challenge, meaning, when you're on Day 15 or something like that.

In any case, the trick is to keep going. The momentum builds and it's great incentive to stick to your guns, cause if you don't.........back to START you go. :( And the really great thing about this challenge is that you are forming new habits that will wipe out the old! AND, you get to do it with a great bunch of really supportive people to whom you are accountable!

There is NO shame in starting over. Remember, it's not over till you give up. And our motto around here is:

NEVER GIVE UP!!...Just start OVER!!




(This challenge was originally started by redballoon. I looked for new threads, but the last one was in December, 2011. I always found this challenge motivating, so I'm reviving it.)

I'm in, my challenge is to drink 64 oz of water (at least) a day. I have a horrible time drinking anything, I don't seem to get thirsty. It's very strange...

this is a level 2 for me.

I want to increase my water intake this year, but I will set myself up for success by starting with 24 oz.

I will also eventually stop eating earlier than 11:30. (But I don't go to bed usually until 1 a.m., so this isn't as late as it may seem.)

My biggest challenge is night time snacking, chips, chocolate, nachos etc. So I'm going to commit to healthy snacking or preferably none at all. My healthy snacks would be rice cake with almond butter or tortilla with salsa or Greek yogurt with fruit. I bought a bunch of new loose leaf tea in sweet flavours and I'm hoping that will be enough since most times I do it I'm not even hungry. This will be a level two for me.

5 days down!! This requires a lot of planning. I have to think about what I'm going to eat in order stay in my calorie range and then I have to plan a workout into my day. It is getting easier, though. I don't want to break the streak!

Hello, I'm new here and this looks like a fun challenge. I will challenge myself to not eat after 9pm. I would say it's level 3 for me, as late night snacking has always been my downfall.

It's already well after 9pm where I live so I will check in again tomorrow and let you know my progress. :)

Hehe, thanks! :D This thread (and the pervious one) motivated me so much. I really doubt I would have stayed on track like that by myself. So, I decided today I'm going for a 2nd round!

I'm going to do 2 goals this time:
1) Exercise everyday (no pauses yet again! :devil: Feel the burn!)
2) Eat less than 1500 calories everyday (3 pauses)

I'm trying to stay in the 1200 - 1500 calorie range, but I've been going over a bit recently... If I could stay closer to the middle of that range, that would be great. I'm going to give it my best shot!

I *think* I'm starting to get shin splints on my left leg again. Pooooooooooop. It happened to me three years ago, too, when I was running a lot (lol, surprise!).

I know I have to back off on the running 100% for a while, or it isn't going to heal. :( I'll have to rely on the elliptical for my more intense cardio until it gets better.

Yeah, the thread's gotten a bit slow lately. I get the feeling it'll pick up at then end of the month.
I don't know why, but this is the only 'chicks up for a challenge' thing I've ever really stuck with 100%. So it's been working out like gang busters for me (so far, knock on wood). My two goals are doing any daily activity and staying under the 1500 calories mark. So far I'm just at like 1499 calories a day but that's just fine. :D

Hey thurr NightAngel26. :D Honestly, I feel great! I went for a long walk today, and I just felt so light on my feet I was almost skipping.
Don't push yourself too hard on the dieting side of things. It's taken me about 10 weeks to get to a point where I can comfortably eat 1500 without feeling deprived at all. I think if I had tried to do it sooner I would have gotten really frustrated and rebelled. I also gave myself 3 pauses for the 1500 calories thing because I wanted to stay realistic in my expectations.

Day 2: exercised (walk) / stayed under 1500 cals
Day 3: exercised (elliptical + weights) / stayed under 1500 cals
Day 4: exercised (elliptical) / stayed under 1500 cals
Day 5: exercised (elliptical + weights) / stayed under 1500 cals <- posting again for last night. I guess I'll be doing it this way, because I never know about the calories until the day is done. :dizzy:

A cool thing happened today. I found a pair of 98% cotton pants I got last year that I stupidly put through the washer and dryer, making them shrink so small I couldn't get them past my knees. I didn't get rid of them because I had only worn them out one time!
Today I put them on, and they're LOOSE! I've lost about 30lbs since then, but I still don't really feel smaller. Now I know I am for sure. :D Crazy!!!

I'm going to try too. Today is my first day of anything and so I'm going to focus on calories only for the next 3 weeks and then maybe add in Exercise.

So my goal is to keep between 1400-1500 calories with today being day 1!

I think next time I'll add in a water goal. Might sound strange, but it's actually really hard for me to drink all the water I need. If I could change that, it'd be great.

Well, I did ok today, might even do more before bed as far as exercise. Food-wise I ate whatever I wanted, was nervous today as I did a nice thing for myself, had my perm eyeliner done!! nerve racking but I think it'll be gorgeous when it heals. :queen: .

I just started taking a fibre supplement and I'm already having trouble remembering to take it so this sounds like a great reminder tool. So my challenge is to take that and drink at least 2 litres of water a day. I'm going to have to start tomorrow as I didn't bring my water bottle with me to work so I couldn't keep track.

Day 1: January 29th
Day 2: January 30th
Day 3: January 31st
Day 4: February 1st
Day 5: February 2nd- I wasn't able to measure my water today but I think I made it.
Day 6: February 3rd

I think Im going to start with my water intake.
I seem to hardly ever be thirsty so this will be hard for me.
Plus I dont like drinking water..lol.

So todays starts day 1 for me.
Im going to drink a minimum of 50oz per day.

Thank you LuvCats. ;) Really, keeping my focus on 21 days at a time has done wonders for my commitment. The time just seems to fly by!

NightAngel26, my elliptical is a Welso Momentum 710. I got it from Walmart about 10 years ago (yikes that's a long time, lol) for about $150. I wanted to get a treadmill back then, but new ones are so pricey! It's held up great after all these years, and I've used it very frequently. Ellipticals seem to have a lot fewer parts that can break down, so I think it's a great investment.

I'll bet you could find an elliptical on Craig's list or want adds cheap, Laura78. I wouldn't be using one myself if I had to depend on the gym. Just don't do gym well... I've tried multiple times and just don't end up going.

I'm in! For the next 21 days, I will keep my calories to less than 1700. No exceptions. Exercise at least 20 minutes every day - 1 pause.

Well - it's been 24 days and I did keep my calories below 1700 every single day but not so much on the exercise. However, I will call it a success. I think I should have set a goal to exercise at least 3 times per week rather than every day. That, I have done. And - I am down 12lbs this month, so it's a victory.

Now, to start all over again for another 21 days. This time around, same calorie requirement but 3 to 4 days per week of exercise.

As for me, no good news except that I'm still on track for this challenge, barely. No weight loss, too much food for that but better with exercise except that one day only did like 5 min but it was intentional at least. On to the next!

Oh, anybody have an ab machine? I know they're not great for burning fat really but maybe a bit of toning? I want something fun, was looking at ab circle? Had ab lounge but let a friend borrow, never to see again...it did feel like a workout...so, anyone use these? Going to get a compact elliptical probably, a new jump rope (kids killed mine), I have a recumbent bicycle (clothes rack for now), one size weights, but I'd like things I can put away.

NightAngel - My Fitness Pal has been a great tool for me which is how I stay in my calorie range. I don't have an ab machine, in fact I haven't actually seen my abs in a few years! LOL Great job at staying with the challenge despite some struggle! :)

BeachBreeze - Wow - 12 lbs, amazing! That was a great month! I agree about 3-4 days, for some people it is way more doable. There is no chance I could find time to workout daily....so when I start, it will be aiming for 3X/week. Baby steps for me!

LuvCats - great job on your exercising - wow! Hopefully I can get there at some point. :)

WTG everyone!!

NightAngel: What about a stability ball? I got one and Leslie Sanson's "You can do abs" video (no walking in it). It is very, very simple for most people I think but I'm coming from nothing so I think it is spot on for me. I can already see using it is going to be very tough for the abs but yet way more fun than basic crunches.

Laura: You can do the exercise too! Start slow... I started with 5 minutes on my elliptical originally. I still don't do great guns daily and I doubt I ever will. Lol today I didn't feel up to the challenge on it so I walked instead.

Sounds like a plan, Laura. Some of the times I've done the tape I haven't felt like I could keep up so I don't do as much of the kicking, etc. she adds in.... I just keep walking. So far I've only done 2 miles but hopefully I'll work up to 3 soon. I have no idea why the settings were different... I suppose her steps are different than mine or something like that... or maybe some of the moves don't register on my pedometer.

Omg, I have such poop news today. I've been using this protein powder from a local, family run health food store, because it's about half the price of the EAS kind I normally get. And I have it multiple times a day, so I though I was being really clever finding a cheaper kind that was also zero carb, 100 cals per serving. Just like EAS, weee!

I finally ran out yesterday, having used it for like 4 weeks. I head over to the bin where all their various protein powders are, and it's got a NEW label: 15g of carbs, 140 calories. My first thought is "oh shoot, they don't sell the kind I want anymore. But the guy stocking the shelves sees me looking around, and he says, "oh, that zero carb kind might have been mislabeled."
AND. I. FREAKED. OUT. (Not there in store or anything, I'm not that insane. :p) I look closer, and the old label is totally there, underneath the new label.

I'm on a low carb, low calorie diet. I went through 5 pounds of this stuff!!! :tantrum: ARGH!!!

Welp, no use crying over spilt milk now. At least this kind of explains why my weight has been not moving, and I feel like I'm retaining a lot of water. I know once I get back into ketosis the water weight will go away, but it sucks to think I might have been blowing my calorie deficit on freaking protein powder on some days! Le sigh.

I'm going to keep on with my 1500 calorie goal, because I've been faithful spirit... if not body. Never buying cheap-o protein powder again, I can tell ya that much.

Vabs - That stinks! But, look on the bright side, maybe this means a nice "whoosh" on the scale for you once you switch back to the non-carb stuff?

LuvCats - I used to be obsessed with my WATP tapes, I need to get back into them. I often did them twice a day, like 8 miles total. Now I'm nervous to do 2 or 3 miles. I'll get to it in a couple more weeks....

Laura78- I don't know if I've tried My Fitness Pal or not...I'll look into that, but really I can semi judge fat and cals from most foods now it's just willpower I lack...for instance, the lasagna I made yesterday is about 900 cals a serving and forget fat omg...no joke...and I eat a lot.... it's bfs recipe and he's offended at any changes.... good stuff though :devil:

vabs- hmmm, no kidding on the protein powder huh? well most do have a lot of carbs, the stuff I use most days does, but I seem more hungry after than I should. I don't know if you have any kind of discount warehouse but I got mine at one for like 10.00 for a big tub thing....maybe you can try those kind of places? Also, without all that maybe you will see what you're hoping for?

luvcats-yes, thanks on the stability ball, I do have one but I'm lazy and haven't blown it up...my poor lost kitty used to sit on the last one and claw it like naughty cats do furniture...it's a stayball anti-burst, and boy they mean it! It took him a months and he slowly deflated it so that every time he jumped up there he sunk further in lol...alas, my ballkitty is gone...maybe I'll post a pic of hat though, the last time he did I got a pic because he looked funny and surprised. So, I bought another ball, same one since it's hold power was so amazing. I'll check out the video, I've been looking at some.

WTG ladies!!

NightAngel I can relate to bad hips... A little over 2 years ago I couldn't walk without an extremely painful and pronounced limp... nasty osteoarthritis in my hip... so I ended up at not quite 45 having a total hip replacement. They don't like to do them so young but if I wanted to be out of pain and walking I had to do it. That is one of the main reasons I'm so determined now. I don't want to be back there again.

Last night was rough for me. It was actually the very first day that food was calling me from the cupboards. I stayed strong though!

I bought a DVD yesterday called "Strong Knees" which had great reviews on Amazon. What I realllllly want to do is C25K program, which I totally fell in love with the last time I did it, except my knees gave up on me. I ended up limping for awhile, LOL. So instead I'm going to do several weeks of knee exercises, buy a knee brace, and start with walking before I get into C25K for the spring/summer.

I've really been struggling this year. Having trouble balancing work, side work, family and myself. I feel like I just keep getting bigger!!! But.. I know what to do.. I just need to stop letting being busy get in the way of getting healthy. I have lost 100 pounds before.. I can do it again.. AND keep it off!!

My 21 day challenge goals are:

Thanks for the welcome, luvcats! Way to go making it halfway with no pauses!

I ate really lightly for most of the day, and after a trip to the gym for elliptical and weights I got to treat myself to a veritable feast: avocado, edamame, hummus, sweet potato, a cup of soup, AND a banana almond chocolate soy milk smoothie. I know it's better to have smaller meals more often or front load the day's calories, but it was SO good :-)

Today was not a lot of exercise, I do that sometimes...lucky I didn't overdo my goals...it's nice to succeed at something once in a while. Also, down one to 261!! Was going to go to the gym tomorrow (today) but it's going to be a mighty snowstorm, so I'm going to try and go out w the kids to play. I don't love cold, my snow pants didn't fit so I might not last long....argh :dizzy: . I used to be... From about 8 to 16 years old. Then I turned out to be a better musician than athlete, and I couldn't juggle all day Saturday competitions with all day Saturday rehearsals. Unfortunately I'm forever cursed with a synchro body- do a google image search, you'll see girls with fairly thin torsos and enormous thighs and upper arms.

My daughter does it competitively now (she's only 7) and has her first major competition coming up. What's funny is that it seems I am cursed with synchro body too (I've never done it, just my genes are to have a small upper body with big thighs), LOL, so my daughter is doomed :D

Happy Monday morning ladies! There is something about this challenge that keeps me going, I love it!! So, since I'm almost at 21 days, starting on Friday I'm going to add a new challenge. I got a knee/leg strengthening video which is about 20 mintues. On top of staying under 1500 cals, I'm going to do this video 3X/week. I'm starting to prepare my weak knees for some more intense exercise :)

synchrojo - Yes, pouring hot jelly on my daughters head is interesting indeed! She has her first ever routine competition in less than a month...I'm nervous. She's only ever done figures competitions up until now.

Luvcats - Great job, you're almost there too! My next step after the knee strengthening will probably be WATP to prepare eventually for C25K. :)

My challenge is to exercise everyday. I have also joined the 1000 miles in 2013 challenge.. so every 7 days I will put my total miles instead of entering it every day :)

day 3 - walked 15 minutes around apartment complex

ah today was not a good day.. with work and grading papers.. then being rain all day.. then having a sick child and babys father.. i havent worked out much.. I probably wont do any cardio today.. probably just some sit up, lunges, and other random in house exercises I can do.. mostly abs.. like i have been doing all day when i get the chance

I'm in! I have two goals that I'm working on - completing the 30 Day Shred (definitely a level 3 challenge) and avoiding unhealthy snacking (level 1, and aiming to ace!)

This is a great idea.... I will drink 48oz of water per day. It may seem goofy, but this is SO hard for me. And it's not like I replace the water with soda or sports drinks or anything... I just don't drink enough. Going to give it a level two.

Joining in, this looks like it will motivate me! My goal is to keep my calories under control... no binge eating. It's hard for me when I go out with friends, I usually just go all out with drinks and junk! It is festival season in my town so it will be especially difficult.

I give myself level 1 because I don't want to cheat!

My calories are at 1600 but I will only count over 1800 as a fail, I do cycle a bit.

I'm not looking forward to this challenge being over....now that my knees are starting to feel better, it means this Friday I'm going to start working out daily - eeks! Also, I think I'm going to bump my calories up to 1600 on Friday to make up for the extra exercise.

All good here. Taking it a bit easy but keeping on going.

Goal: Exercise everyday (Level 2 but trying to ace it).

Day 1: Elliptical 26 min (1.15 mi).
Day 2: Walked during my volunteer shift.

Havent been to the gym in a while.. to have a REAL good workout.. hopefully I can do that tomorrow!

day 4 - treadmill 20 minutes, bike 5 minutes, weights, and leg exercises
day 5 - random ab workouts and some leg workouts
day 6 - treadmill 30 mins, weights
day 7 - 27 minute walk/jog outside with my son nice day!
day 8 - not so good.. just danced around house.. but i broke a sweat
day 9 - 25 minutes treadmill, 10 mins bike, and 20 minutes of weights woo
day 10 - 22 minutes walking outside with son... and walking all day at work (teacher)
day 11 - walked 30 minutes

YES!! We all rock!! Even if someone has taking a break (whether it wsa for a personal reason or just because we are to darn tired) WE ALL ROCK! Congrats to everyone! I am sad my 21 day goal is almost over, but I am going to start a new goal after my 21 days! :) Gotta think of a good one.. I want to have a new goal every 21 days.

I AM DONE MY FIRST 21 DAY CHALLENGE :) WoooHoooo :) I can for sure say this challenge helped me ALOT to work out.. I might not have lost much weight but I have gained some muscle weight.. Starting tomorrow.. my new challenge is to drink ATLEAST 32 oz. and workout at least 3 times a week.. I am TIRED of working out every day lol so imma do 3-4 days a week

I haven't been on here in a few days been busy and spending quality time with my son during these beautiful last few days.. But I have drank at least 32 oz everyday and sometimes more.. I never really kept count but I counted up to 32 oz then quit. working out has been great..

Goal #2 work out 3 times a week

I haven't been on here in a few days been busy and spending quality time with my son during these beautiful last few days.. But I have drank at least 32 oz everyday and sometimes more.. I never really kept count but I counted up to 32 oz then quit. working out has been great..
day 1 - about 40oz, and the 1 mile walk with leslie sansone
day 2 - about 50oz, and 1 hour workout
day 3 - 58 oz, no work out (yet, might work out later)
day 4 - over 32 oz relaxed no work out
day 5 - over 32 oz cardio weights
day 6 - over 32 oz walked for 1 hour at the park
day 7 - over 32 oz cardio, weights
day 8 - 32 oz, at park for 3 hours playing football, walking, soccer. so tons of exercise

My goal: To eat under1500 cals for the next 21 days.

Mar. 14 - Day 1 - 1100 cals.
Mar. 15 - Day 2 - 1450

Okay, here we go! Still a n00b on this site and to dieting but ready for the challenge.
My goal will be no bingeing for 21 days. Today is day three. Hope this gives me the motivation, making it a contest! This is fun.
