South Beach Diet - UK Chicks

View Full Version : UK Chicks

Hello Everyone,

My name is Amber and I currently live in London. I'm originally from America so am desperate for some UK chicks to help me find similar products here!

During university, I was about 8st 9lbs, but since finishing school and working, I've put on a stone and a half! My mom did the SB diet when I was growing up and had amazing results. But then she quit the diet and put back on all the weight she lost.

I want to change my eating style for life, not just to lose some weight. I'm an avid runner (running 4-5 times weekly) but can't seem to shift pounds that way. I need to change the way I'm eating as well. I've been on several other diets, but think I do better limiting carbs.

I hope to hear from fellow UK south beachers!

:welcome: to The Beach, Amber! We're happy you've decided to join us!

We do have one or two Beachers from the UK on our forum, and hopefully they will be able to help you locate the products you are looking for. But do remember that SBD is all about eating fresh or frozen wholesome foods, so as long as you're avoiding white flours, no sugar, eating lean meats and low fat foods and lots of vegetables, you should do just fine.

The only thing I'm craving is something sweet! Everything else I'm eating is fresh, unprocessed food. I just need some dessert, lol!

08-19-2012, 07:53 AM
Have you tried one of the ricotta creme desserts, or the SBD peanut butter cup dessert? Check out our Phase 1 recipes section for lots of ideas to satisfy your sweet tooth. :)

Hi Amber,

I also live in near London in the Uk and am also starting South Beach this week. I'm Australian and also got a good dose of the Hesthrow injection.
It's my second go at it, I got distracted by too many summer celebrations but now back on track. It worked very well a couple of months ago where I lost 6 kilos/12 pounds in 2 weeks and have kept most of it off so far but have a whole to go, about 15 kilos to go.
How're you finding it so far?

08-24-2012, 06:40 AM
Cottage, I went to get ricotta last night but accidentally grabbed marscapone instead! They were right next to each other :( I've had the peanut butter desserts and they're great!

Chrissy, today is the official start of Week 2 of phase 1. I lost 6lbs this week so I'm really pleased with that. I've found that it hasn't been too bad. I run 4 times a week and found that really hard on phase 1 so before running, I've been eating berries. I don't consider it cheating (even though it technically is) because I'm only eating a small amount for running fuel. It's also easier because my husband is away and I can cook exactly what I need to be eating with worrying about feeding someone else. Hopefully, week 2 will be good as well. How is your second time going?

08-29-2012, 02:47 PM
Hi Amber I've just started today, I live in Milton Keynes which is just up the road from you. :)

wow so you lost 6lbs in the first week well done :carrot:

08-30-2012, 02:07 PM
CBeen, good to have a fellow beacher close by! How are you finding the diet so far? I was lucky to lose so much the first week, I think. Tomorrow is the official end of phase 1, so I'm nervous about the next time I weigh myself. Good luck to you!

08-30-2012, 07:20 PM
I did well on the first day BUT today i nicked 3 pieces of my sons fudge and scoffed a slice of bread :o, but it was because i didn't have any lunch, i forgot as i had to take my hubby to have an MRI scan.

I must make an effort to have lunch on time or I'll come a cropper:o

08-31-2012, 03:52 PM
Hi Amber,

Well done on a 6lb loss in your first week! I must admit I had lost track on the weekend as I had entertained over the long weekend, perhaps it wasn't the best time to start. Anyway I'm not giving up and am starting again this week and on track so still in week one. Yes it's a good time to start when hubby is away and you only have one meal to cook. Mine is eating the same dinners just adding carbs to his meal which makes it easier.
CBeen I live in Aylesbury so we live even closer. How are you finding your first week?
I've got a tub of ricotta but wasn't very pleased with my first effort of squeezing some lime in it. It was a bit grainy. Do you know where I can find the peanut butter recipe?
Thanks and great to meet some local ladies on South Beach! :)

08-31-2012, 04:25 PM
Hi, I found the recipe section but many of the desserts seem to be tailored to US market as can't find too many of the ingredients here. What desserts have you been having lately? An already craving sweet things! Thanks :-)

09-01-2012, 04:15 AM
Hi guys, have you got the link Chrissy?

As for deserts I just make up some hartleys sugar free jelly (powder in the packet) as i'm not sure what else to have.

But yesterday i got some Quark and blended it with some light evaporated milk and added some sweetener and it was like a sweet cream so perhaps that can be used for something, i bought some peanut butter too, so I'm gonna experiment today :D

I too tried to get ricotta but they only had normal, no low fat :(

Also before when i did SB I made the nutty granola recepie which is in the book and that's really yummy:)

BTW: I lost 4lbs today (not been a week yet, 2 more days to go :carrot::carrot::carrot:

Hi girls,

Congrats on the weight loss so far!

I finished Phase 1 on Friday! I lost 8lbs and am really pleased. For dessert, I had ricotta a few times. I used a hand mixer and a bit of half fat cream to get it to a smooth consistency. I also found a recipe for cream cheese cupcakes which turned out nicely for me!

I'm a bit afraid to move on to phase 2. I don't think I'm ready! I'll keep you all updated on how it goes. Especially since I'm going out for Italian food tonight with my mate. Eeek!

09-01-2012, 08:17 PM
ooh well done Amber, was it low fat ricotta?
I can only find normal ricotta in tesco's :(

09-02-2012, 04:31 AM
Nope, it was the normal one. I don't think they do low fat ricotta here! But since I still lost weight, so I don't think it matters too much! Where did you find turkey rashers?

09-02-2012, 05:00 PM
The turkey rashers were in Tesco in the bacon section, they are by Mattersons. they are not bad a bit tough but that could just be my cooking LOL :o:D

I've been ultra good today :D

09-03-2012, 11:17 AM

Yep I got the dessert link thanks CBeen. I'm having Total Fage 0% fat greek yoghurt with splenda and no-sugar jam for dessert at the moment which is nice but am looking for a bit more variety. How did your Quark experiment go?
I couldn't find low fat ricotta but got the normal one from Tesco which isn't too high in fat so I've had some of that but just can't seem to find a good recipe for it so it's just sitting in my frige at the moment.
I'll have to give the nutty granola recipe a go, looove Granola!
I found a really nice dip in Waitrose this week called 'Babaganosh' which is an smokey aubergine turkish dip which is delicious with celery and my new fave snack alongside roasted chickpeas (just like popcorn kernels!)

Wow congrats on the 4 lbs loss in less than a week! BRILLIANT!! :)
I've not yet been on the scales but my jeans are getting looser already.

Amber, where did you find the recipe for cream cheese cupcakes? Was it from this site? If so will scout it out. Congrats on your big phase 1 weight loss! Woah-hoo!

How did your Italian dinner go? Did you find SB options on the menu?

09-03-2012, 11:21 AM
I have them every morning, they're yum and not tough if I cook them until they're lightly brown. I get mine in Tesco. I don't eat eggs so they're my usual breakfast although tomorrow I'm trying the black bean chicken salsa dish (wish me luck.) I have them with the vegetable hash from the book. Yum!
They're also good as a substitute for bacon in a chicken caesar salad, in phase 2 I added toasted pita as croutons and it was delish!

09-03-2012, 12:08 PM
Hi Chrissy, my quark and peanut butter experiment was a FAIL! :( LOL
But to be honest I'm better at staying away from lots of sweet things as it tends to get me back in the habit of relying on sweet stuff. So just jelly for now.

Can i ask I'm not sure how much cheese i am allowed in a day and also Hummous is now my new best friend but i'm not sure on how much of that i'm allowed to eat, do you know??

I think it's gonna be T.O.M for me next week as I jumped up 2lbs (water retention :( ) but this always happens to me so I'll have to hang on in there)
So that's a bit of a bummer, just gonna drink water like its going out of fashion :D

09-03-2012, 12:31 PM
Check out the FAQ section for answers or come on over and post in the Daily to get input from lots of US, Canadian and other chicks.
Hummus is made from chick peas so you can eat as much as would be in a serving of legumes. Careful though because some of it has a lot of oil and calories DO count.

Cheese can be the culprit when we eat too much as it's very high calorie. An ounce a day is my rule.

LOL I didn't realise you had!

It's ok, thanks for re-opening :D

I don't think there's a cheese limit but I try not to eat more than 30g of reduced fat cheese a day to be safe. There's no limit to houmous either but I do also buy reduced fat versions.
I'm not going to get on the scales until the end of phase 1 so it will be a big surprise. My clothes are feeling looser already which is good.
I made the yummiest dish today, mexican chicken bake with black beans salsa and cheese. So good! My new favourite meal. How're you going with your meals this week, trying out any new recipes?
Haha.. ok won't try Quark and peanut butter in future! :)

09-04-2012, 02:46 PM
How about posting your menus in the On Plan thread? You'll get lots of ideas there and referrals to recipes.

I was doing ok but I'm losing my will power early evening before dinner.
I was doing really well all day then i got home, had a headache, started to make dinner for everyone then half a white baguette went into my mouth.
I'll get over this I'm always like this to start with dietwise, I need to find my groove, then I'll settle in then away I go.....................gonna keep on trying. :)

09-05-2012, 08:05 AM
I know what you mean, this diet requires tough will power. I find if I eat carbs on this diet the next day is a struggle as I'm 50 times more hungry. I must admit last night I cheated and had half a pack of chocolate. Soo bad.:o Not letting it ruin my phase 1 though, and back on track today after my slip up. It's harder today though as as soon as the sugar hits your system you just want more of it.
We need to stay strong. :carrot: I've got a calender on my fridge that counts down the days to phase 2. I love phase 2, it's so much easier so counting town the days. 10 to go! ;)

09-07-2012, 07:58 AM
Hey uk chicks,

How're you going this week? I've got six days of phase one remaining and counting down to phase 2. Can't wait for some bread!
Enjoy the sunshine! :):carrot:

09-07-2012, 08:34 AM
Hello, Everyone!

The cupcake recipe is on here under phase 1 desserts.

Italian night went well! I have the meat and cheese board to start followed by an italian salad with chicken and some other yummy things!

I've been sticking to mostly phase 1 foods and recipes though I do have a serving of fruit most days. Some days I have grains and some days I don't! I haven't weighed myself for a week but will do so tomorrow and report back!

09-09-2012, 03:57 AM
Hi Amber,

I'll have to try out those cupcakes, Mmmm cupcakes.
How did your weigh-in go? It sounds like you're doing very well with exercise so as long as the fruit and grains don't induce a carb raid on your cupboard should be fine.
I've got 4 more days on phase 1, am nearly there woah hoo! I must admit i haven't been perfect with a few days with a naughty addition but mainly have been on track. I haven't weighed myself once yet do looking forward to a nice surprise Friday morning.
Can't wait to start having sweet potato and coleslaw with my dinner and fruit. I'm dreaming of a juicy pear right now.
Are you on phase 2 now?

09-09-2012, 06:22 AM
Hi Chrissy,

I started Phase 2 about a week ago and haven't been nearly as strict as I was on phase 1 and unfortunately, my weight did not go well. My weight is at a stand still which is so frustrating after doing so well on phase 1. I have been cheating a bit as I had a few chips the other night. :(

I find that any kind of carbs really get my cravings going again so I don't know what I can do about that!

Last night, I went out and cheated at dinner. I have no will power on phase 2. If I start cheating in a night, I feel like I can't stop!

I'm going to be really strict this week and only have a serving of fruit and one grain. No more cheating!

09-10-2012, 03:49 PM
The sane thing happened to me last time I started phase 2, the weight loss stalled but I think it's your body adjusting to the first weeks of fast weight loss.
I can not wait to have porridge for breakfast, if I see another turkey rasher in the morning.. ahhh.
Not long till phase 2, 3 days to go yay!
It's good that even though you might slip up one night, you're back on it the next day. No ones perfect but if we eat this way most of the time we'll lose weight! Good luck this week!

09-17-2012, 06:45 PM
Hi I'm from the UK too, I just started day one today, I'm still a little confused so would be grateful for any help. Does anyone know, can tinned tomatoes be used in phase 1?

09-17-2012, 07:18 PM
:welcome: Sasi. Please check out the Phase I Food list in the Frequently Asked Questions section. There's lots of info there.

09-24-2012, 11:05 AM
Hey UK Chicks,

How're we all going? :)
I'm on phase 2 and it's still going well lost 6 pounds so far in 3 weeks which is ok, could've been better as have cheated a couple of times I must admit but generally going ok.
Sasi, how're you finding it? Canned tomatoes are ok on all phases.

09-27-2012, 05:14 PM
I'm almost through my first week, I've lost about 4 lb so far, I'm a little anxious about phase 2 and also I'm off to visit family for a night tomorrow and I am finding planning my meals for that quite hard

09-27-2012, 05:15 PM
I'm almost through my first phase that should say!

09-29-2012, 03:38 PM
Hello fellow UK chicks! :)
I am actually Canadian but live in the uk ! I know how much easier it is to get the ingredients in North America. Haha, whenever I go back, I bring things back, like almond butter, peanut butter, coconut oil, bars, etc. :P
But I'm also doing a modified phase 1 at the moment since I was very off track last week (last week in Canada before school started) as my mom tried to feed me everything she could haha :P But, the only modification is I added some carrots since they curb my appetite really well and am still adjusting to this biological dysfunction due to the time difference :P
But, good luck to all of those! Remember you can do it and mind over matter :)
