I think it's been tossed around a few times, but I know money is a concern. If we did it, we'd need to plan well in advance (like maybe something in late 2004 if we started planning today.)
I'm all for it! We'd have to pick someplace pretty central, though, since we have folks flung far and wide on this board!
04-06-2003, 08:21 PM
Where does everyone live?
I know the low carb board had one. Jiffy.. didn't you go to a meet? Any tips on organizing one?
04-06-2003, 08:36 PM
I would like nothing better. It would have to be central and we would have to realize that EVERYONE won't be happy.
04-06-2003, 10:57 PM
i would LOVE that. i always want to meet my online people! i feel like i get so close to people online that i just HAVE to meet them, and they are always so far away. =(
maybe we could have a few conventions. i mean, you'd probably only get to meet the people that are closer to you, but some people wouldn't be able to make it THAT far away, you know? so if there were more of them, more people would be able to go.
we could do like, 3 US/Canada ones, spread equally somehow, and other ones with europe/austrailia and such.
OR we could have a whole bunch, like one for each US state, canadian provence, etc.

I'd be totally up for going! This year I have packed on the frequent travel miles. In 3 hours, I am heading to Dothan Alabama (Thats actually where the tiny airport is, we still have about a 40 minute drive from there).
If my memory serves me correctly, most people are out in the midwest. How about a cool city like New Orleans? Of course, if you all want to make the trip to the Northeast, Boston is a quite a cool city ;).
04-07-2003, 04:53 PM
I would travel anywhere in the United States.
04-07-2003, 07:25 PM
It would be a blast, I'm in for it!! They had talked about doing one around Baltimore Md a while back. (that's close to me!)
04-07-2003, 08:01 PM
wow!!!! if ya don't read for a day or so, things really pile up around here!!!
SI... you'd have to travel the farthest, as just about everyone else is US based.
yep.. the low carb board actually had two.. ruthxxx headed to nj for a visit with another friend, and those of us who lived in the area got together for sunday breakfast at a diner [a true nj institution!!!]
The other one was in atlanta, and coincided with gee, i don't remember WHY we did it!!!! Maybe to celebrate the fact that debk and i were still alive and because a friend from texas was heading to SC to stay with her ill parents for a couple of weeks.
and i'd also gone to an internet chat group weekend. that was very structured. a barbecue on friday, dance party on saturday, breakfast on sunday.
so, things can be as simple as meeting for a meal, or as complicated as a weekend-long event. the most important thing, i think, is that there's an area with lots of activities so that some folks can lounge by the pool and others can go off on more active pursuits. this is really important if family members are along. the other important thing is time together. being able to sit down and talk and laugh.
we were planning on having a meeting here in nj in may, but my sister decided to cancel it because she's planning to have wls, although she hasn't set a date yet. we had a rough outline for this weekend: most people coming in on friday; a casual dinner at someone's house. saturday was to be a field trip to nyc, trying to accomodate everyone's interests. i was planning on renting a tour bus for the day, just to make sure no one got lost!!!!
some of the lc ladies live in long island and other parts of the ny/nj area, and offered to help with ferrying people around and with food prep. we had a hotel picked out, not real expensive, but clean and comfy with an outdoor pool. and i could get everyone temporary passes to my health club.
and sunday, brunch at one of the local places, and then everyone was free to go... or hang around.
does this help??
i guess what i'm saying is that it's real helpful to have someone local to make arrangements for activities.
as for location, i'll go just about anywhere. baltimore is fun, so is boston. loved n'awlins. never been to chicago. love london. never been to reno or las vegas. love san diego, san francisco, seattle, denver. would love to see san antonio. or go on a paddle steamer on the mississippi.
hmmmm. i've just reread this post... and if we'd planned to get one tour bus, we could certainlky plan to get another one!!!! a combined 100 pound club and lc ladies?? what a hoot!!!!! A VERY NOISY HAPPY ONE!!!!!
04-07-2003, 08:45 PM
Greating from Alabama (Ozark city, AL) to be exact.
I think a major hub city would probably work best for most people (Chicago, Atlanta, New Jersey area, etc.). I believe there are many people out in the midwest, so maybe Chicago would work best (just in terms of being relatively easy for the majority).
Is there anyone on the list from Chicago? If people decide two have two (or more) of these things, I would certainly be happy to make some arrangements for the Boston area (I know a couple of New Englanders here on the list). Bottom line is I would be willing to go anywhere.
04-07-2003, 09:20 PM
Chicago sounds good! - but I don't think anyone from here lives there.
Sandi - let's go to your house! you can teach us all to play bunko!!
04-07-2003, 09:46 PM
I am less just over an hour from Chicago. :D
When would we want this event?? How much lead time would eveyone need??
Would you be bringing your families?
04-07-2003, 10:57 PM
I love Chicago, and could drive there. That would be such a blast!
Not sure about everyone else, but I've got this year pretty well mapped out, vacation wise and such, but could work something out. Just a thought.
04-07-2003, 11:10 PM
Chicago would be good, as long as it's in the summer. I also would cast my vote for Atlanta - LOTS to do there! If anyone is interested in the gambling scene, we could go to Tunica, Mississippi. (Right down the road from me. :) )
04-08-2003, 12:24 AM
chicago would be a long road trip for me! but if we planned it way in advance, i could save and buy plane tickets early...
04-08-2003, 01:14 AM
I'm 2 hours north of Chicago. 2004 would work better for me if it's going to be further away than that. (I'm going to Superior/Duluth for vacation in June & to Mexico for my cousin's quincenera Thanksgiving weekend.)
04-08-2003, 09:50 AM
I have a friend in the Hotel Industry - let me see if I can get some hotel prices to give us an idea.
We could go downtown and see the blue man group one night - they are outstanding!!!!
Is end of summer/fall too soon? Should we shoot for Spring/early summer 2004?
04-08-2003, 11:41 AM
Here's my input:
Chicago is cool and 2004 would be better for me.
Are you talking about a real convention or a get together?
My Cute Boyfriend's parents help organize conventions for the Sci-Fi people so some advice about convention is to shop around for a hotel. We shouldn't pay more than $100 a night in a very nice hotel. You will also have to organize a contract with the hotel that states things like there won't be cheaper rooms than the rooms we're getting at the hotel during our stay, if beverages would have to be provided by the hotel only etc.
If you do a "real" convention, you need some activities. Like speakers etc. May I suggest:
-A chef that does something like, "cooking within your points."
-A few different types of fitness instructors that could offer short classes throughout the day: Yoga, pilates, bellydance, balance ball. Like a tasting of exercise.
-A panel board discussion featuring Club members that have succeeded in their weightloss goals.
Those are my ideas!
04-08-2003, 12:49 PM
OOh, we could be guests at an Oprah Show taping!
04-08-2003, 01:59 PM
Hey maybe by 2004 most of us have reached goal!
04-08-2003, 02:30 PM
Oprah tickets are hard to get. I've heard horror stories of women waiting a year or two.
04-08-2003, 03:28 PM
Chicago sounds good to me since it's central and an American Airlines hub.
I don't know about 2004 - I'll have a baby to consider! But, I'll do my best.
I agree with Jessica - it would be fun to actually learn something and have scheduled sessions. The chef thing would be a little hard though, since all of us are on different plans. The low carb people get the short end of the stick when we talk about menus and recipes - it's a whole different thing with fat and such.
Anyway, this sounds like fun. I can do it this summer - if it's next year I just don't know what will be going on with my family.
04-08-2003, 03:36 PM
Chicago sounds fine, but I don't really care. I think that I could probably get where ever, but I think that we need to wait until 2004.
Another thought could be winter in Phoenix at a resort (very nice).
04-08-2003, 03:44 PM
A convention would be fun - but more costly (imo). Take an average person - figure in airfare and hotel for say 2 nights and your getting up there - not to mention food - and any activities - shows - shopping - whatever and it's getting up there. Add the cost of a speaker or a class and we might be making it too expensive. It also really depends on the number of people that would go.
I do know that if you have a block of rooms you can get better rates - but it depends - do we want the holiday Inn near the airport or the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers downtown on Michigan.
I guess maybe we need to do some polls.
04-08-2003, 04:43 PM
and i vote for a downtown location for the hotel. although it's easier to get from the airport at the airport hotel, ther'es just sooo much more to do in a downtown location, even if someone just wants to take a stroll.
and most hotels offer low or free transportation to/from the airports. the shuttle buses...
i can go whenever. as soon as i arrange for some eldercare....
04-08-2003, 09:35 PM
Ya know, if you decide to go the convention route, you should contact exercise equipment manufacturers and diet companies (like weight watchers and atkins) they may be willing to send representatives (free of charge) to demonstrate or talk about products. (even Oprah has been known to show up at things like this when she's been invited!) Hey, we may even get some free samples or be on tv!!
04-11-2003, 09:28 AM
If we did end up in Chicago - I would consider contacting Oprah to let her know!!
slimming si - look what you've started!! :D
04-13-2003, 08:16 AM
well um. right was only a spur of the moment suggestion bit taken aback by the response. i only get online on sundays when i open the gym. so two pages of responses is well shocking. i don't mind travelling to the US. chigago sounds good anywhere don't bother me much as i still have to cross the atlantic. end of 2004 is good for me. speakers would cost but if we selected a few people from the list here to talk would slash costs. i mean i lost 100lb so far in 13months we are talking almost 18months time i'd be a matchstick lol. i'd gladdly tell my story and give some tips. sure others would love to have a go. as for being on oprah well if we can why not could get a discount at the hotel for advertising or summat. informing manufacturers of weightloss diets and foods would be good to them its big business and if they could sponser then we're laughing after all we keep them in business.
bottom line anywhere is good for me would prefer Miami as i'm a life long dolphins fan but anywhere is good
04-13-2003, 09:45 PM
Dolphins fan from the UK?
I'm originally from Cleveland, you gotta love those BROWNS!
Anyway, wherever we end would be good for me. It looks it is might be coming down between Chicago and Boston, either place looks good!
04-17-2003, 09:43 AM
Hope you don' t mind me barging in-just was doing a search for MIAMI and your thread popped up because SLIMMINGS mentioned it.
I moderate the SUGAR BUSTERS BOARDS here on the 3FC'S site and we've had some wonderful get togethers with gals on the board over the past 3 years. I've now met 23 past/present members from our board. Last one was in Orlando, FL where I ran my first 1/2 marathon, heck, my first race of any kind in my life. We had a wonderful weekend together. I had one board member that flew in from Austin, TX, one from Dallas, TX and one from Slidell, LA that I had never met before and stayed with me at my home before we all headed up to meet others in Orlando. We had a fantastic weekend filled with good SB LEGAL eats (one gal that lives up that way hosted a luncheon where we all brought food) with lots of fun and tons of talking.
If you can do it, it's the greatest, but it does take a lot of work, esp. the more people you have. BUT, if anyone decides to do it, and make it Miami, LMK, as this just so happens to be where I am!!!:D
Oh, and SLIMMINGS, I've actually met someone who bought something from me years ago who lives in the UK. We've spent time together each time they come to visit in Miami!!!
Continued success to all!!!

OK.... I'm gonna talk too.... (hehe) I work at Holiday Inn Express... which means I work for 6 Continents, which means I could probably get us a good rate at any 6C hotel i.e Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crown Plaza, Staybridge, etc. A lot of times, if a group stays at a hotel and you get so many rooms, they will give you a hospitality room for free. If not I'm sure if you wanted me too, I could see about some employee discounts. I know that I personally could get 8 rooms at an employee rate which is usually $29-$39 a night.
I'm all about Chicago... I LOVE Chicago... I could marry Chicago.... and if I'm not careful I will come back with an accent. I don't know how far the planning has gone yet, but I think sometime in 2004 would be prime, so we can all save money, especially if you're a poor college student like me :) and because then I'll be 21!! WOO HOO!!!!
Maybe we can write to Oprah and tell her how FREAKIN AWESOME we are and then she'll love us and invite us to be guests on her show... hhhehe.... I know I know... it was a nice try!
Anyways, those are my thoughts..... most importantly the hotel thing.... if whoever is planning this gives me the word, I could give some places a call... my boss is from Chicago, and I'm sure, with his master womanizing skills, he could get something worked out for us too.
HEHE WE ARE SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
04-18-2003, 12:13 PM
wow, do we have the hook up or what? i like cheap hotels and hospitality rooms!!
i'm so excited that we're really gonna make this happen!!
04-18-2003, 12:28 PM
Holly I was thinking if we have it Chicago you could take a bus to Omaha and shack up with me for a day and we could drive up to Chicago together I would love the company!
04-18-2003, 03:44 PM
well dear... david is telling me that would be a 1 1/2 day bus trip!! but i could always fly to where you are and drive with you. i'd be flying either way. :)
but wait! how long of a drive is it from your place to chicago?
04-18-2003, 04:23 PM
Just trying to save you moola ma'am! If your gonna fly, fly direct to Chicago, it's a hub! Omaha airport is friggin expensive cause it's a hub to nothin! LOL!
04-19-2003, 12:47 AM
Hey! All the Omaha people should drive together. Sorry, just thought I'd butt in..... It's always like A LOT cheaper to fly out of KC.
04-19-2003, 08:30 AM
your our hook up for sure!! We'll let you know as soon as we pick a place and date! The cheaper the better!! As far as Chicago, it'll depend alot when other conventions are in town.
04-19-2003, 12:25 PM
its great we got someone with the inside connections! From the poll in the other thread it looks like Chicago is going to pull through. I love Chicago as well (only been there twice, and didn't have time to see much).
04-19-2003, 12:37 PM
I'll drive with you Deevine!
04-19-2003, 05:11 PM
04-20-2003, 06:32 PM
well as i started this whole thing off i guess its compulsary that i attened lol. just worked it out gonna take me nearly a day to get there 3 hrs drive to heathrow and then about 8 hrs to maine or newyork flying. then an internat flight. with waiting times lol. i have no idea what chicago is like but if its wet and cold i'll b right at home and hopefully my lovely english accent will get me around lol.
am looking forward to seeing everyone where ever is decided. if you lot think driving is expensive try living here. gasoline is nearly $7 a gallon.
