Exercise! - Work your way to a mini-vacation. Any takers?

Hi everyone! I just had a great idea for exercise and would like to invite others to join me. Here is how it works.

Choose a place you would like to go that is "reasonable" for your budget, family size, etc. -- close or far away, your choice. If you can only afford a day trip to a place not far away, fine.

Then... virtually "walk" to that place. Count any type of exercise and you set the mileage earned. For me it is 10 minutes of exercise equals one mile. THEN when you "get there" actually GO to that place for a mini-vacation!! Check in here along your journey and post info and pix of where you are, what you "see" along the way, etc.

I chose Seaside OR; a place I love and can afford to go to for a weekend. It is 193 miles from where I live; I'll be traveling down US-101, which is the beautiful coast highway.

I am going to count the minutes I have been logging for the last month; up to you whether you do that.

My total needed is 1930 minutes.... I am starting out deducting my 532 minutes, so I still have to go 1398 minutes.

Hope you will join me! It will be FUN and there will be a real reward at the end!

Goal 1930

7/29/12 completed 532 mins (53.2 miles) - still to go 1398 min (139.8 miles)
Current virtual location -- I've crossed the Bremerton Ferry and am just a couple of miles from coming into Allyn-Grapeview WA.

Soooooo... anyone want to join me????

I have tried everything on the face of the earth to add a photo... including searching the forum for instructions... and am unable to do it. Nothing works. Hopefully soon I will be able to share some pix.

Change of plan!!

My friends and I want to go to Victoria BC, Canada, together, so I am going to change to that as my virtual walking goal. It is closer but we also want to take the trip before too long so it will still keep me moving!!

Kenmore WA to Vancouver BC = 132 miles

Waiting until it cools down to go to the pool tonight but current total
total 657 + 45 = 702 minutes
total miles 65.7 + 4,5 = 70.2

I am over halfway to Victoria
Current location Anacortes WA (69 miles from Kenmore)

This next part is going to be tricky because I have to cross the water... so will have to do some guesstimating :)

Thanks, Diana! My friends and I had talked about going to California this summer but decided that the trip is too long, too hot, too much driving, and too expensive. :) So I am thrilled that they want to go to Victoria too.

Hi Misti
I will give this a go :)
I live in Melbourne and have chosen Port Fairy - via the scenic route which is along the "Great Ocean Road"
The trip is a total of 374.5 kilometres.
Kilometres are shorter than miles so I will go with 2 kilometres for 10 minutes of exericise.
The trip goes
Airey's Inlet
Apollo Bay
Port Campbell
Port Fairy

Port Fairy is a beautiful beachside town -- that I have been to several times but want to go again ..... Also the drive there along the Great Ocean Road is magnificent so it will be good to relive it.
Hopefully I can keep up with the posting and calculations.
Let me know how you post pics if you work it out

Yippeeee Crystal! So glad to have a walking buddy! And thank for the description. Yes, it would really be nice to be able to post pix. I asked in the forum help section even and got no answer. I just can't get it to work. In the past it seems that I posted images to Photobucket first and then could post here but that is not working now. But I'll work on figuring it out.

I went 35 minutes yesterday in the pool, or 3.5 miles -- totals are now

Kenmore WA to Vancouver BC = 132 miles

total 702 + 35 = 737 minutes
total miles 70.2 + 3.5 = 73.7

58.3 miles to go
Current location on the ferry from Anacortes, four miles from Anacortes, headed towards the pass between Center Island and Blakeley Island (38 more miles to landfall at Sidney)

It is 42 miles across the islands on the ferry from Anacortes WA to Sidney, BC, Canada

From Sidney, the route is

North Saanich (5.59 miles)
Saanichton (1.62 miles)
Victoria (13 miles)

I did it! I got a photo! Here is the ferry from Anacortes I am "on" -- headed to Sidney!!!

Crystal, I added the photo to Photobucket, then went to the image on Photobucket. Over on the right there is a box that shows links. I chose "Image Code" -- click on the icon at the top here that shows the little picture (add images) and paste in the code.

I can't wait to see photos of your journey

Hi Misti
Okay I have been thinking about what you said about it being my walk and I can start where I like so I am changing my walk too.
I am going to do the "Overland Track" in Tasmania. I actually did it a few years ago -- and am going to do it again sometime. It is a wilderness walk so you have to carry everything you need for six or seven days- but it is a magnificent walk. I am going to call 20 minutes a kilometre-- as it is a hard slog carrying all that weight. The total kms will be about 80 depending on sidewalks ( plus whether I take a ferry at the end or walk the last day)

Here goes - This week since Monday I have done 180 minutes of exercise- which translates to 9 kms. The first day of the overland walk -- starting from Cradle Mountain Resort is shortish -- but tough ( uphill )
I have walked 2.4kms to the bottom of Cradle Mountain -- Then I did the sidetrip up and down Cradle Mountain -- and have walked a further 4.1 kms.

The first hut for the first overnight stop is still 3.9 kilometres away. I am going to give myself rewards each time I get to a hut.

I would like to post some photos of Cradle Mountain -- and the late and small hut that I have passed so far. I will have a go tomorrow when I work out your instructions.
How are you going?

08-07-2012, 09:20 AM
That is a lake - not a late - that I have passed. A bit late here :)

Hi Crystal

Wow, what an interesting and ambitious journey you are taking! And good idea to give yourself rewards along the way.

I did the pool tonight but plan to do some weight bands/balls a bit later too so will wait to add my mileage.

I can't wait to see your photos!!

Super good day for me today!! I'm getting closer
Did 45 mins in the pool and 60 mins with weight bands/Danskin balls
total 105 mins or 10.5 miles

Kenmore WA to Vancouver BC = 132 miles

total 832 + 105 = 937 minutes
total miles 83.2 + 10.5 = 93.7
38.3 miles to go

Current location on the ferry from Anacortes, 24 miles from Anacortes, (18 more miles to landfall at Sidney)

It is 42 miles across the islands on the ferry from Anacortes WA to Sidney, BC, Canada

From Sidney, the route is

North Saanich (5.59 miles)
Saanichton (1.62 miles)
Victoria (13 miles)

Hi Misti

I will have to print myself out a map of where you are -- to get a mental picture of your trip. Your photo is great ---- I love a good ferry trip and also snow coverered mountains and it has got them both.

I went for a walk with a friend tonight along the beach so have added 3 kms to my trip so I am only 0.9 kms from the first overnight hut " Waterfall Valley Hut" MY first reward coming up :)

You had a great day with exercise as you said... I am intending to get to the gym tomorrow so should reach my first goal :)

Happy Journey

Hi Crystal

So glad you are getting in some walking! Is this the hut you are talking about? Looks fun! There was another hut called the same thing but looked quite a bit different so I might not have the right photo.

Generally we can't post links here but I don't think there is an objection to Photobucket since it is a photo posting site we can use to add photos here. It is at

You open an account and upload photos to a public album. If you get photos off of the web, make sure you get ones that are okay for public use, etc. - you can find them by googling. Then when you get the photo onto your site there, look on the right and it will show an IMG code. At the top of your message box at 3FC you can see the next to last icon on the right has a little picture on it. Click on that and paste the IMG code into it. Hope it works for you!!

Just did 40 minutes with weight bands/balls

Kenmore WA to Victoria BC = 132 miles

Note, not sure why I said Vancouver in previous posts... LOL it is Victoria I am going to)

total 937+ 40 = 977 minutes
total miles 93.7 + 4.0 = 97.7
34.3 miles to go

Current location on the ferry from Anacortes, 28 miles from Anacortes, (14 more miles to landfall at Sidney)

It is 42 miles across the islands on the ferry from Anacortes WA to Sidney, BC, Canada

Victoria (13 miles)

Hi Misti

Yep -- That is definitely the hut... I am remembering how tired I was when I reached it on my real walk :) But it is a beautiful part of the world.

It is a bit late here now -- but tomorrow I will have a go at posting a few photos of things that I passed on the way between Cradle Mountain and the first overnight hut.

You are powering along on that ferry :) Well done so far

Hi Crystal. That hut definitely looks like it takes a bit of doing to get there... but what a neat place to stay!!

I've been traveling this weekend so am just going to post my time and figure things out later.

Thursday I did 15 mins of weight balls/band

Friday I did 90 minutes in the pool, including 45 minutes of playing water volleyball... what a workout LOL.

08-13-2012, 06:32 AM
Hi Misti

Just added up -- Since my last posting I have exercised for three hours
180 minutes. Some of it was doing jog/walks on the treadmill and some of it was weights. That translates to another 9 kms. I have reached the first hut- Yippee and passed it well and truly.
I am 3.7 kims from the next hut... I have done a side trip to see the beautiful Lake Will and Innes Falls.
How are you going with your walk.. I still have not had a chance to investigate the photo thing yet.
Hopefully I can soon

08-14-2012, 06:21 PM
Hi Misti

Just did an hour this morning -- walk/jog/ride
so that means I have done 3kms of my virtual walk -- I am only 0.7 kms from the next hut. Woo! Hoo!

08-16-2012, 06:38 PM
Hi Misti

Did an hour yesterday morning and 40 minutes this morning... need to add 5 kms to my walk... Off to work now but on the weekend will work out where I am.
How are you going on your walk? Have not heard from you for a while.

08-18-2012, 06:52 AM
Did another hour this morning -- Went for a jog/ walk on a "rail trail" in Gippsland ( country Victoria a couple of hours away from where I live )
When I get home I will add up where I am on the track but I have done another 5 kms so I am on the way to hut 3.
I have booked my first reward -- a facial at the Beauty place I go to.
Need to think about what my second one can be.
How are you going?

08-19-2012, 11:12 AM
Oh wow, time to start adding up stuff!
Last Friday I did two hours in the pool, including an hour of water volleyball. Then Saturday and Sunday at least 1.5 hours total of walking at the arts festival. Yesterday an hour in the pool so I have 4.5 hours to add.

that is 270 minutes or 27.0 miles

Kenmore WA to Vancouver BC = 132 miles

total 977+ 270 = 1247 minutes
total miles 97.7 + 27.0 = 124.7
7.3 miles to go

So I am about halfway between Saanichton and Victoria.
Almost there!!!!

Misti in Seattle
08-19-2012, 08:34 PM
Not sure why I have been saying Vancouver... it is Victoria BC I am going to! LOL and I just looked at the map again and it says 127 miles.... so I am THERE!!!

Another 43 minutes in the pool

4.3 miles

Kenmore WA to Victoria BC = 127 miles

total 1247 + 43 = 1290 minutes
total miles = 129

Here I am!
Now I have to decide whether to walk back home or take a walk around the island a bit. :)

08-21-2012, 12:36 AM
Wow -- You are there :) Well done you! I am not going to get to gym this evening as I have a meeting and then choir but what I will have a go at doing is getting photos on. I have been a bit slack with that sorry.
Thursday evening I am doing my first reward... and organising something for me second.
If I was you I would fancy a bit of a walk around the island after making all the effort to get there :)

Hi Crystal

Yes I think we both have beautiful areas to walk around in! :) I need to post some more photos too. I've been a real zombie in this hotter weather we are having.

Congratulations on your reward!! Can't wait to hear more about it.

Yes, I do need to walk around the island!!! :) Nothing today though ha

60 minutes of exercise today, or 6 miles. Will add it all up later where I am

Misti in Seattle
08-22-2012, 09:55 PM
Adding my minutes from since I posted
Kenmore WA to Victoria BC = 127 miles

total 1290 + 60 = 1350
total miles = 135

I am 8 miles past Victoria. I decided to walk up to the Pacific Rim National Park, which is 69 miles from Victoria (or 196 from Kenmore).

I am almost to Langford... only about another mile. From there I will head on to Sooke, which will be another 15 miles.

08-23-2012, 10:09 AM
Hi there

I did an hour last night and an hour this evening -- Will add this all up on the weekend and work out where I am... Photos to follow from me too :)
The photos will be a job for the weekend.. as well as the adding up. I have had lots of reports to write up for work this week which has consumed a fair bit of my time.

I googled where you were -- I looked up the Pacific Rim National Park. It sounds very interesting. There is a trail there for walking which sounds great. Coastal views etc

I have done my first reward -- and have earned my second but haven't taken it yet. Thursday night here so a weekend coming up soon :)
Enjoy your trip

Way to go, Crystal. Hope you enjoyed your reward!!

I didn't really plan this as a reward but I have been having a lot of back and shoulder aches so I splurged and bought TWO massagers. One is a pillow type and I love it but can't reach some places with it such as my upper arms, etc. So I got them both!!

Hi Crystal

Looking forward to your progress report. Our planned trip to Victoria is postponed because of my friend's health issues but for now I guess I will keep walking around the island. Hopefully we can make it in October; not sure yet.

Anyway I did two hours in the pool yesterday, which gives me another 12 miles.

total 1350 + 120 = 1470
total miles 135 + 12 = 147

20 miles past Victoria. I must have calculated wrong before (not used to converting km to miles LOL) as it is 24 miles from Victoria to Sooke... so four more miles to go!

I am having trouble finding free photos of this area... wish we could post links but that is not allowed here. Oh well... :)

08-30-2012, 09:22 AM

I have not been very well -- had a bit of a flu/ sleepy sort of thing that was going around my work. Also I have been struggling a bit with being motivated about dieting. Not good -- Maybe because I have been not well.
Anyhow I did half an hour this morning --- One hour earlier in the week and and an hour last weekend. A bit of Maths to work out there. How are you going?
I must get back to eating healthy food ... This virtual walk might get me back on track if I find some time to sit down and work it out. All the best to you.

I have slacked off in my workouts this week but yesterday got in about 30 minutes of walking... LOL a lot of it walking up and down the street looking for my missing gas cap which I left on my car and drove off. Finally found a place to buy another one.

Oh and today I did 50 minutes in the pool. So I have 80 minutes plus the 30 from Tues to add. Will come back later and calculate it. Total to add of 110 mins
