Hey! I just finished a 3 day juice fast to try it out and loved it. Now I want to start a longer fast for 3 weeks! Who's with me? :carrot:

I'm a little wary of this, although I've always been interested in trying it. My main concern is muscle loss due to lower protein levels...does anyone know of the best ways to maximize protein intake on this kind of fast?

Just because it's a "great" way to lose weight does not mean it is healthy. It could be why you do not have a lot of replies... It's okay for a few days but WEEKS?... I would think long and hard about this.

I would love to take part in a juice support group!

I am doing a hybrid juice fast, where I have one full fast day per week and then five days of juice for breakfast and snacks, with low-carb, mostly veg and protein, lunch and dinner. Mid-week I have one free day with higher calories and carbs.

I've been thinking of trying juice fasts, maybe a 3-day one each month to get rid of PMS water weight. I don't have a juicer though. Would a smoothie fast work?

I just finished a 4-day juice fast in solidarity with my roommates. They're going on longer but it was making me lose weight too quickly!

You guys should do it -- it's effective, delicious, energizing, and won't deprive you of essential nutrients (since you're getting so many vitamins, minerals, soluble fibers, and even protein from the juice). As long as you're juicing veggies and not drinking Tropicana ;)

Amandie, I understand and appreciate your concern, but there are people who do this for months healthfully. It is important, however to maintain a healthy balance of nutrition and calories. Heck, there are people that also live on nothing but fast food. However, you make a great point that whatever type of nutritional diet people decide to follow, it should be done after careful thought and research.

I think the length of time is subjective to the person fasting. I am an If'er and an emotional eater. So, I juice during the week while I'm working and stressed and then eat proper solid foods during my window 2-3 days between Fri-Sun. However, I do follow my body cues when I need to eat more. I'm not doing this forever either, just during this particularly stressful time with work while I'm restarting my weightloss journey. Then do it maybe 3 days a week to clean my insides.

As far as protein is concerned, I add a protein powder drink to my routine. So, I'm not juice-fasting per se, but the majority of my nutrition comes from nutrient-rich drinks like freshly juiced juice, Alive! Green drink and soy protein drinks. I also make sure not to overdo certain vitamins such as Vitamin A.

I have been considering doing this. Every day I log my food intake into myfitnesspal and I am consistently low in both iron and potassium. Iron is especially a problem for me. I have started drinking one of those "mean green" drinks a day to supplement. One day, just for kicks, I entered the diet that they are doing on that reboot site into my fitnesspal. Basically it is just 4 of those mean greens a day and nothing else. When I analyzed the nutrient composition of that day it was actually way better than my good/normal days where all i am really eating are veges, fruit, almond milk, yogurt, and lean proteins. The only things it was low in was protein and fat. The protein level was actually not too bad. It was 50% of recommended values but I figured I could add some protein powder or something. The fat level was almost nonexistent and I am a little worried about that one.

edited to say that the total calories for the day are about 1240 but you could always drink some fruit juice or other juices if you wanted it higher.

I am starting a juice fast, end of day one today. I have been struggling with my weight for years now. I feel heavy and sick. I am deteriorating physically and cannot bear to go on fat.
My main concern is the fact that I struggle with migraines. It is the end of the first day and I already have a good headache. Any suggestions on how to ward off the headaches and juice fast? This is the one thing that has prevented me from losing weight more than anything else.

I would LOVE to get on board with a support group! I bought my veggies and juicer over the weekend and I'm ready to go full speed as of tomorrow!! My parents started juicing (due to some health issues with my dad), which caused me to look more into it...I would love some additional support from here as well

Hey, I fell off the wagon, well sort of. I did a 13 day juice only fast. I ended up breaking the fast for Thanksgiving with the family. Then after the holiday, I was juicing during the day with a normal meal in the evening. I have ate bad for the last 2 days and am about to juice fast again.

Im no doctor but Ill speak from my experiences and maybe it will help you. The headaches could be from detoxing I heard anemas help to make them go right away if you are into that I have never wanted to do those but they are supposed to help a lot.

If you don't want to try that then it may be also that you are hungry and try making another juice like some fruit juice or something.

I have an Omega juicer... But I don't really use it anymore... and that being said doing juice fasts never really worked for me for any sustainable weight loss...

But I do have Vitamix that I absolutely love... I use it to blend veggies and fruits to make smoothies and drinks that still contain all of the fiber...

I'm on day #7 of my juice fast. I'm trying to stay with the fast for 30 days. In the beginning it was a little rough so I ate some fruit and one day i made an cilantro salad with avocado(it was so good that after i finish my juice fast i'm going to make one as a treat). The goal is to juice your meals but if you feel like you're about to fall off the wagon just eat something raw like fruit or make a salad. it's not the end of the world if you don't juice 100% but as long as you eat raw you should still drop pounds.

I did a raw diet several years ago when it was really trendy here... I used to eat at Pure Food and Wine all the time... It was VERY trendy... It's all 100% raw vegan... Very upscale as far as that sort of cuisine goes and definitely worth checking out if you're ever in NYC and still doing the whole raw thing... They also have a couple of cookbooks that I have and really are some of the best out there as far as raw vegan cookbooks go...

I also had a meal delivery service from Rawvolution... which is a very well known raw vegan restaurant out in Santa Monica... But their also here in NYC now... If you're into the whole raw scene... Definitely one of the best of best... they have a cookbook as well... which is a must for anyone who is serious about the whole raw thing...

And personally I would try to get some protein in there, even if it's only from raw cashew butter or something and some fat as well, even if that's only from raw cold pressed oils... Otherwise you might actually "lose" more than just a few pounds by only drinking juice for thirty days...

I will agree with you about needing some fat. That's why I made an cilantro avocado salad last week. If I get a craving for something fattening I will eat some raw fats. I personally think I'm getting enough protein with the juice. I can't speak for others. I stopped lifting weights for the 30 days and honestly I'm not working out to save what little muscle I have under all this fat. Right now my weight is so high I really don't care if I lose some muscle. Muscle can be rebuilt right? I've never been a big meat eater and was vegetarian for years. I've been pescatarian for about 6 years and I haven't eaten red meat in over 15. I really think we eat way more protein than what we need. The hardest part of the fast is going to be keeping the weight off and transitioning back to eating. I think the easiest thing for me to do is to juice during the day and make a meal in the afternoon. Whatever I eat as a meal I will have a large serving of veggies to go with it.

HI,

So I'm on day 1 of my juice feasting. I'm giving myself some leeway so if I crave like eating, then I do raw fruits and veggies or if I have some work to do, then maybe some scrambled eggs for the protein. So far so good! I've already lost 2.2 pds today, is that possible? lol. I was out today and about, I was really active for the day. I'm about to get some exercise in as well and I'll just eat some fruit if I start feeling weird but I want to exercise at least for 20 minutes or so just because. I know on juice feasting the weight loss is rapid so I want to help myself out as much as possible. Also, I could really use the boost in self confidence and self discipline that sticking to this protocol is going to give me. I'm really trying to tailor an approach that fits me. I don't know how long I'm going to juice feast. I have about 2 weeks of varied work because I'm a nanny so I'd like to go for at least that length of time, but if its awesome and I love it then maybe I'll try for the whole 30. I'm not putting any restraints on it though and just going day by day. But I do know that my body needs this so much because I don't get in all the veggies and fruits I need so going raw for 30 days should prove to be awesome. Also, I have huge food allergies and I want to get in as many nutrients I can without putting additional stress on my system. I'm also taking digestive enzymes to deal with any undigested food in my system. As I explained to my family critics, I'm still getting the nutrients in because I'm juicing whole apples, carrots, kale, beets, etc etc. and drinking the nutrients, just not the pulp. I'm not starving myself and I'm not fasting, I'm just getting my food in liquid form. This gives my digestion system a rest and the rest of my body time to focus on something other then digesting food which has huge documented benefits. Do your own research because this is an awesome thing. I'm uber excited! and I feel this is the perfect way to start a new year :) with strength and determination! :carrot:

and yes, I know the 2.2 is all water weight. I've been chained to the toilet...but that's okay.

and also, yes cardiac is muscle, but I severely doubt that our bodies are dumb enough to start burning muscle from the most important organ in our system...just p.s. on that.

Thanx for that...hope clearing it up makes you feel better, feel free to attach the links to the scientific research that shows that when a person switches to a liquid diet of wholesome juices that match their needed daily caloric intake, instead of using said nutrition, their body starts to burn their cardiac muscle as a source of nutrition. I can't wait to read all about it. Meanwhile, while you search for said research, please stop with the scare tactics for something that proves to be healthy for numerous individuals...and yes honey, I can prove it, pm me anytime okay?

"Muscle can be rebuilt right?"

Not cardiac muscle... Once it's gone... It's gone...

And regardless of any studies to the contrary that you may come across online... they haven't been translated into any practical benefit for actual people yet...

do you know how long you can go without eating protein for your body to start eating your heart muscle? I wasn't able to find any research. For right now I'm juicing in the day time and at night I will have a vegetarian meal and will try to eat much raw food as possible and throw in some protein smoothies or something.

Hi Rookie, I'm doing something similar, except I eat a small meal in the morning just to get me going and then I do juicing the rest of the day. I'm kind of taking it a day at a time, using it as a huge opportunity to cleanse my digestive system...but I'll know when it time for quits. My mom and I were talking about it today, and I think that I'll probably move to regular meal for breakfast and lunch and then juicing after 4pm to allow my system to restore itself and rebuild doing sleepy time instead of having to focus on digesting dinner. I'd had some amazing results and I feel so much better! I can't believe how well my body is responding to this...and I never thought that processed foods really had that much of an effect on my body.

Rookie, how much weight did you average per day lost?

I averaged about an 1 to 2 pounds a day. Right now I'm juicing in the day time and one vegetarian meal at night. I haven't exercised in over a month because I wanted to see if I could still lose weight without exercising doing the juice fast(also I was scared my muscles wouldn't repair on low protein diet). When I did the juice fast only I was losing weight. Right now I'm juicing and one meal a day and my daily calories are under 1200. My weight has stayed the same for 3 days. I'm not hungry. I'm still drinking at least 64oz of water a day. My appetite has decreased a lot. I'm going to drink green smoothies during the day the next 2 days and one meal at night (still under 1200 total calories for the day) to see if I can at least drop a pound. I don't crave junk food still right now. I've been eating a few of my favorite foods that I've made like avocado taco, cilantro salad, veggie chow mein, etc. I really need to get this weight off so I may do a 7 day juice fast starting Monday. I see you're in the Atlanta area also. The cheapest place to buy fruit and veggies is Super H mart, and farmers markets. It's not organic but I can juice on about $5 a day.

My husband and I are starting the 15-day reboot next week and I really want to talk to someone else who is/has done this as we're going through. I may stay on it longer...when I end, I plan to transition into Dr. Furhman (also feature in the Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead) plan of nutrarian eating, the reverse food pyramid.

I'm mentally prepared to do this and I'm actually sort of excited (rare, since I've gained and lost more than 250 pounds over the past 20 years on so many other diets). But this time, I've got a new obstacle now -- elderly parents who live with us.

My mother (always rail thin, hates fat people (yes, probably even me)) has early dementia and I fight daily with her about eating enough. She was 87 pounds when she moved in 18 months ago...and I have her up to 104. When she drops below 100, her medication makes her fall down and brings on other complications. So I need to cook WWII-style meals she will eat...and coax her through dinner....

Anyone have any thoughts on how to get through juicing while cooking for others, particularly others who will deliberately try to sabotage your efforts?

Thanks

If anyone is still watching this thread, how are your juice fasts going/how did they go?

I'm on day 6 and going strong, sort of. I haven't cheated yet, which is saying a lot because I haven't stuck with any diet for longer than 12 hours in probably 10 years. Even though I haven't cheated, I sometimes feel like I might at any minute. I have three kids under 4 that I have to feed (and they eat all day long) and my 17 yo brother lives with me and he likes to cook things that smell really good. My husband is supportive, but he also likes to cook when he is home, so with all this food, it has been a battle. Surprisingly, though, as evidenced by the fact that I am on day 6, it hasn't be too bad. I am not really hungry, but I just WANT food.

I am not sure how long I am going to continue my fast. Honestly I started it with the secret belief that I probably wouldn't last the day, much less several days. I sort of want to try to go for 30, 60, or 100 days, but right now I'm just shooting for 7 or 10 and then I'll reassess. Currently I'm down 11 lbs, and am losing 1 lb a day, which is really good motivation to keep at it. But mostly, I'm just not sure that if I stop now, I'll be able to eat healthfully and not revert to my old ways. I think that the longer I keep it up, the more willpower I am gaining.

Any thoughts (preferably encouraging)?

Ninae- try checking out Reboot with Joe Cross. He has some great juice recipes and several "plans" you can follow as well. Personally I have not been able to get past a one day juice fast. I just feel starving and lightheaded by midafternoon. So I eat salads or veggie soups for lunch and dinner and have juices the rest of the day. Good luck!

Hello All!

Just watched Joe's documentary "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" also, and have a juicer - I'm ready to go! Thinking of doing a 3 day to try it out next week, November 19-21. Anyone want to do it with me?

What's your favorite juice recipe? I try to stick with low sugar, because I'm a Type II diabetic. I want flavor but can't have too many apples, carrots, or beets. Any suggestions? Do people use ginger or garlic? What are your favorite herbs to throw in?

I'm on day 9 of juicing and feel fantastic! I juice breakfast, lunch and snacks and "eat clean" for my evening meal with salads, avocados, small amouts of wholefood cards and lean protein such as chicken or fish and i'm loving it. I feel amazing, got so much energy but the best thing was that all the things that were my downfall when dieting (pizza, bread, cured meats, cheese, wine) just don't appeal to me at all now - I don't even like the smell of them, let alone the taste. I'd far rather tuck into a plate of broccoli, salad and a herb omelette.

I weighed myself on day 7 and had lost 5lbs in weight, 2% bodyfat and hydration levels were up by 3%. I've also lost 4cm off my hips and 2cm off my waist. I am truly stunned at how much better I feel. I personally find that using ginger and or lemon in the vege juice makes them far more palatable.

Hi all!

Couple things. I've done a 3day reboot, and truthfully, Om not sure I'd go over seven. Not because of I'll side effects or anything, really, but the human body IS made to eat food. Chew it, swallow it, and digest it. Coming OUT of my fast was pretty ok, seeing as how my taste/smell was hyper sensitive, it literally made me remove yucky processed things from my eating habits because they were no longer appealing! Though, please be aware that your belly does kindof feel shocked by normal foods when you re-incorporate them! I lost a total of 12, yes 12 pounds in three days! Now, five of that did return as solids in the digestive tract, but the other seven maintained easily! I made mostly my own spin on "mean green" and had pretty good results, but I truly think this is better as a little reboot, and staying diligent on changing bad eating habits, along with exercise implementation is the absolute best bet!!

Just in my personal experience/opinion!
Best of luck with all you who wish to try it!
