I did the Ideal Protein diet and lost 140 lbs and a total of 124 inches. These are my before and after...and my weekly stats.

I still can't believe I went a year without a chocolate bar!! :D

+++++++++++++++

So today I've decided to add to this 'description of me'. I've been over weight most of my life, in fact right now at my maintenance weight, I'm in Grade 7. I remember being in health class and having to weigh myself in front of two of my friends and I was mortified to be 162. I was a size 18 when I graduated high school. I ballooned up to my highest weight of 313 which was in a doctor's office so who knows how high I actually got but I remember sitting down and crying right there.

I don't know why I let myself get that far up, does anyone really know 'why'?? Guaranteed I was in denial...sometimes when I watch hoarders I actually feel a sense of understanding. I almost felt overwhelmed and didn't know where to start so why start at all. Going to the gym I could do but then when you go 19-20 times in a month you see nothing for your efforts it's frustrating.

I was at the end of my rope and was starting to seriously consider surgery. I am highly scared (from past history) of surgery and how I respond to it. I knew I wasn't interested in gastric bypass, I've had friends that have had it and I've seen the scars (free for me where I live with insurance but would have to wait 2 years). WAY to scarey for me, I found out that I could have the lap band surgery but would have to pay for it myself. I spent 1 hour trying to figure out how to pay for lap band surgery ($17000 - :fr:). My BFFL gave me the soup n@zi finger and said "listen here, you've worked hard and I'll grant you that, but you haven't worked hard for long enough".

Approximately three months earlier my mom in her careful and gentle way had mentioned the Ideal Protein Diet (she'd lost 40 lbs on it). I decided I would try Ideal Protein first (although expensive less then $17000) and if it didn't work then I'd re-consider the surgery option. The cost of Ideal Protein is 'HIGH' but again I was willing to pay $17000 if I could. But because it was so expensive I said "self, give this a good shot, you are not allowed to consider surgery unless you give it 110%" So I went on it, originally decided I would be on it for 8 months. When I hit 8 months I thought "ok, well! you've come this far why not finish it".

I started IP on the 19 of April (as a birthday present) and hit my goal on the 18 April (my Birthday). That was AMAZING....and now I'm 'maintaining'.

I didn't get rid of my 'big' clothes right away. I kept them all and when I hit goal I started to sell them off $1-$7 dollars at a time (using a facebook group in my community). I sold enough clothes to pay for my sapphire goal ring which I now use as a measurement tool. If it's tight on my finger I have work to do. Also, love that it's on my right hand, which is the hand that I eat with, so it's always right there in front of me.

There isn't much difference between losing weight and maintaining for me, I'm still as neurotic :D But I refuse to forget what it was like to be 313 lbs and I never EVER want to go there again.

I am soooo excited to see your pictures!!!! I have admired your calm sensible approach to this journey. You look incredible!!!

I'm trying to remember if you did any exercise in the latter stages of your program. You look so lean and don't seem to have loose skin issues.
You have the same climate issues with exercise as we have here further along the road to the west. I am just now getting out for some walking. Did you do anything during the long winter?

I am so happy for you! Goes to show how following the program with no panic pays off.

I also keep thinking of the advice you got from fellow TOPS members on maintenance too.

Thanks for all your support and comments....it was a heck of a ride and I'm still getting used to my new body. My plan is to try running by the middle of May, can't wait to see hoe long it takes my lungs to burn. I'm used to my body giving out before my lungs, pretty sure my lungs will go faster this time. I won't go so far to hurt myself, just excited to feel the difference.

Could not have come this far without all my friends on 3 fat chicks :)

I didn't do anything specifically so I think I was blessed with what I got. The women in our family have always had good muscle tone (and we're all heavier).

I did however really excersise a lot in my teenage years (I used to cross country ski like a fanatic, my body USED to be a machine LOL) and I think with IP that muscle tone stayed with me.

There is loose skin there though, I can still pretend to fly away! But I have had fitness friends say that they look good considering...again, nothing specific sorry :/

Thanks Peeps! :)

I was able to run...I just went to the gym and jumped on the treadmill and decided "lets see what this body can do".

I did 20 minute run, 2 minute walk and a 20 minute run. With warm up and cool down 55 minutes. I ran at 4 miles an hour for the entire time of both 20 minutes. It was AWESOME.

Now I'm waiting for my leg to heal (another minor surgery)...I'm chomping at the bit to do it again...who would have thought I'd be that excited to run.

It feel great and I felt powerful.

I LOVE IDEAL PROTEIN! (in case your wondering!) ;)

No, I didn't do anything specific during my IP journey.

I think I was blessed...my mom lost a lot of weight too and when she flexed her calf muscle she looked like a body builder, you could see the definition of a few different muscle groups...wish I had taken a picture at the time. I don't think I knew how blessed I was until I recieved all the compliments on here....didn't know I looked that toned actually.

I'm impressed at how healthy you look! How has it been now that it has been a few months?

I thought I'd wait a few days to respond to this as today is my two months maintenance anniversary, that doesn't include the month it took me to phase off. It's not much, but it's something. :D

I find my anxiety level on the scale has greatly reduced as I see a natural swing of my weight. I'm still journaling, I use an iPad app "my net diary", based on a recommendation from KatMarie (she has goal pictures on here). One of the options is to look at your 'progress' and you can see the swing of my weight. I'm usually my lowest on the morning of my fun day (Sat) and then bounce back up. Sunday is Phase 1 (requirement as per maintenance plans, IP isn't the first diet to have a strict day during the week), then the rest of the week is Phase 4 and it usually takes a few days to see my weight start to come back down and I'm the lowest again on the morning of my fun day.

I'm consistently running 2 times a week, testing for 3. Right now I'm running between a 5.4-5.6 on the treadmill (I think I might be about 12-13 runs in now) with the last five minutes 6.0-6.7 and I do this for 40 minutes, but add in a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down (so total workout is 50 minutes). I haven't added strength in yet, not sure when I will add that, but I will!

So far so good! I'm planning a vacation this summer, this will be the test! :) But I'm already planning my strategy for when I'm away and what I will do when I'm home.

:) thanks for the comments!

Thank you! :)

I thought I'd update my thread with what I've just posted in the IP Maintainers thread. Friday was my 3 month in maintenance and I weighed in at the exact same weight as what I started my maintenance with, 158....which is actually low for me BUT I'm pretty happy with that.

I'm off on a vacation starting on the 22 August and I'm pretty pumped! I'll feel comfortable with how I eat now and if I over indulge there is a plan to 'nip it in the bud'.

Things that I have learned in 3 months in maintenance:

- indulging once in a while won't hurt me (ie having a small piece of cake during the week)
- running is important to me...I'm in love with it...that surprises me!
- I must NOT run on fun day as it makes me hungry the next day (although running actually cuts my hunger)...no one wants to be hungry on a Phase 1 day...so I run on a Phase 1 day so I'm not as hungry BONUS is I use up glycogen stores from the day before and I can jump right back into Phase 4 the next day and deal with any potential hunger.
- I need to keep myself busy on a Phase 1 day so I plan activities and that could be just going for a walk at a specific time of day or even just making phase 1 day my cleaning day...
- chocolate...I just can't have it..I limit it even on fun day, that much sugar now makes my tummy feel bad AND I get the instant sugar crash and will fall immediately to sleep (which I never do now and I hate that feeling). I was pre-diabetic before I started IP so perhaps I'm ultra sensitive but I because I highly dislike the 'upset tummy/falling asleep symptom" I just avoid it
- nutz...I'm in love with nutz and would NEVER be able to have a jar in my house so I save them for fun day and go to Nutters (pun not intended but I laughed as I typed it ) and get a serving and enjoy them without guilt! (the ladies at the counter already know my schedule and will say "you're here for your weekly treat! lol)
- fruit...I love fruit...when I'm at work I can schedule them into my daily plan (twice a day) so as part of my fun day I'm allowed to have as much fruit as I want...I have probably 3-4 fruits on fun day.
- journaling, I still journal but will only journal Monday to Friday, I don't need to journal fun day (who wants to really know) and I don't journal Phase 1 day...so really I do essentially take the weekends off. I use a journaling app, I eat the same breakfasts everyday (same one I chose for Phase 3) and type in my plan right before I go to bed. Because I eat generally the same food (cycled throughout the month) the ap already knows what I'm typing almost before I type it. Takes me seconds to punch it in.
- the app also shows me the natural swing of my weight so I find my anxiety level on the scale is much reduced...I can see the swing and that gives me confidence in what I'm doing is right.
- and finally - water...I must MUST keep the same amount of water EVERYDAY, including fun day...this helps keep me on track and not over indulge on fun day...and also helps me with my running plans for the next day.

So I haven't posted in here since my 3 months aniversary (WOW), it seems to me that I'm keeping this thread around to use as an 'update' and I'm not sure who is reading it but by keeping it updated once in a while seems to be one of the things that's keeping me on target. I'll try to do better then every 6 months LOL

I do come back here on 'tough' days and re-read what people have said, it really boosts my energy!

SO today is my 9 months, if I was preggers I'd be due today HAHAHA.

Today is 9 months in maintenance and I weighed in at 159.2 (158.6 yesterday). Amazingly enough, thats exactly where I started maintenance (in the 50's). Really I hit goal at 164 and started to phase off, so I've been 10 months fluctuating between 5-6 lbs....which to me is sucess.

I've been working HARD at getting my weight lower (had a few days up at 166/165 - around Christmas ). Right before Christmas I said "self, your fun days will not be on regular schedule therefore the normal # of days between fun days won't be 'normal' so it will take you a while to get back to 'normal schedule and fluctuation' after Christmas. You have until 17 Jan to get your poop together".

I have been eating very very very specifically and very very light (only the regular one day of Phase 1 day), last two weeks have had two nights of fish and two nights of scrambled egg whites with veggies and I'm choosing not to have carbs some nights for supper (I still have my after supper fruit). AND, it's shown up on the scale right on time. I've been very careful these last two/three months because of my hips, I have not been exercising or even walking due to the pain so I deleted 150-200 cals from my diet and I'm now 1300-1500 intead of 1600-1900 per day.

I was running 10 km runs and getting in at most 35 km a week at the least 20ish km a week - ended up with bursitis in both hips. I just had a cortisone shot which I'm not sure has 'helped' but in general it's settling enough that I may attempt to go walking at the gym tomorrow

I am inspired DAILY by EVERYONE on 3FC. I go to TOPS on Wednesdays so that's my mid-week check in, I plan my meals sometimes two days in advance. I track my food still AND I track my daily weigh ins. I can use the program so make a bar chart of 9 months and I see the fluctuation and it helps keep me confident that what I'm doing, I'm doing it right (for me). I come on here...I POST! Posting is part of accountability to me, I wish more people would post so I could have more to talk to! lol

I need plans, and when I need one, I need it now I cannot wait for someone to give me the plan, I must make it myself and see if it will work for me. That doesn't mean I don't come on here and find others plans and adapt them. Having a plan calms me, if I don't know what I'm eating (or going to eat) I get irritated and frustrated and life is not pleasant for me.

I have been on target in the past, I am on target today and I am planning to be on target tomorrow.

Thanks for all your generous comments over the last 9 months they've really helped keep my confidence high.

People are still reading this thread and loving it -- so please don't stop udpating! Throughout my up-and-down weight loss history, I have wondered if anyone other than Jared Subway manages to maintain weight loss. It's hugely inspiring to watch you (and some others here to 3FC) do exactly that.

Thank you so much for sharing -- especially going through the decision on surgery. I have no problem with people who choose that option, but like you, coming up with the money was going to be a BIG challenge for me. You look wonderful and I love the ring idea!

Hey,

Not sure who's reading the entire thread but I've been trying to put an update on here once in a while. Almost like a little mini blog I guess (no way could I have the time to update a blog daily or even weekly - glad others do because I read theirs! :D)

So today is 1 year (18 April 2013)...today I've hit the milestone of long term weight loss. WOOHOO, YAY ME!! :)

When I first started IP I wrote down my wishes (something Dr Beck tells people to do). I wrote "why did I start this" then I updated it with "what's better about my life now" and then I added "how much work did you put into it to get this far"

Today, I added to my poster

1 Year maintenance! and the following is what I added:

- long term weight loss - I feel a HUGE sense of accomplishment, I am proud of ME! :)
- I managed my emotions yesterday, I have managed my emotions so far today and I plan on managing my emotions tomorrow.
- accept the situation and play the cards you are dealt
- conquer or crumble - attack the little bit NOW
- believe when others doubt

I'm pretty stoked that I weighed in 4 lbs below my goal. I have followed the rules of maintenance as prescribed to me, 1 fun day followed by 1 Phase 1 day...I have fluctuated this past year within 5-6 lbs...with a little spike after Scotland that was fixed by 3 days of Phase 1 (the most I've done in maintenance).

Good luck in whatever weight loss efforts you take, I know KNOW Ideal Protein worked for me. It helped me learn it was ok to say no, that there will always be cake. It helped me learn to listen to my body (didn't know I was gluten sensitive or lactose sensitive until I started Phase 4.). It helped me change my lifestyle. It helped me learn there is no better time then RIGHT NOW to change...don't wait till Monday. It also helped me learn a bit of self compassion goes a long way. Forgive yourself quicker, no sense beating yourself up! (I work on this everyday, it doesn't come easy to me but I'm better at it today then I as yesterday and much better then 2 years ago...it's like learning the piano, it takes practice).

I've also learned that other ways to lose weight work for other people...they just didnt work for me. How I lost weight and how I maintain are my personal choice and that's 'ok'. :) If it's working for you, KEEP DOING IT!!!

Hey Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all your wonderful comments.

I know I posted that I would try to keep this updated but I've been a little busy growing a new human. My plan in the last year was to get married and start a family, it happened quicker then I thought.

It is an emotional rollercoaster to lose from highest weight 151+ lbs and then turn around and actively be ok with GAINING some weight back. Thankfully I have a good healthy lifestyle now. I was running, I love LOVE to run but needed to stop running at the beginning of my pregnancy and then was advised to stop walking for a while. So now I use Leslie Sansome's "WALK AT HOME" programs (I have five of her videos) to try to maintain some of my fitness level. I also do prenatal yoga.

I have also announced to my husband that we will be buying a jogging stroller for my use during my maternity leave. Looking forward to going for walks outside...this winter in Canada REALLY sucks this year. I'm usually an outside winter activity gal but this year it's SO SO cold and I'm too scared of falling that I haven't been outside enough. It has an effect on moods for sure.

Here is a picture of me at 27 weeks.
