I know there's been threads on scales before. Like getting different readings when u get on and off it a couple times. But this morning I get on my scale the first time and it read I weighed 285.4 lbs!!!! I knew it wasn't true but I wish it was!! It would mean I lost 25 lbs since this past Saturday. Yeah right! But man I wish it was true. I get back on there again a couple more times. It read I was in my 290s then it started reading something more reasonable like 305 and 306. I have no idea what my weight is. I went to my doctors yesterday and it said I lost a couple lbs since I started on Saturday. I know my weight changes, but not by that much! By the way, I always weigh myself on tile floor in the same part of the house, the scale is barely a year old, and I keep as still as possible with my feet planted easily.
By the way, I read reviews on amazon and some reviews do say getting on and off the scale is inaccurate. The battery is lifetime. Maybe it's just this model (Taylor 7335).

I know what you mean! Scales don't realize that its important to us to measure every pound! I can weigh three times a day and get three different weights! I finally started weighing in on fridays where I work (at a hospital) on our supposedly accurately calibrated digital scale. I am still leary though. I run weird too, do you tend to fluctuate alot? I mean sometimes I wake up 5-10 pounds either heavier or lighter than the day before.
I keep a 15lbs hand weight by my scale to verify the weight. It usually weighs in at 14.8lbs so it's off by 0.2. My scale has done that to me a few times but once I check it with the hand weight a couple of times and I step on it a couple more times the reading is usually right. Change the battery too that could be the cause. Congrats on losing anyways, even if it's not 20+lbs it's still a loss!
I would go by the weight you got at the doctor's office. Also, even though the scale isn't very old you might want to change the battery to see if that gives you some consistency.
Do you think a dial scale is more accurate than a digital???
No. It's about the specific scale, not the type. Some digital scales are super reliable (my Tanita has been going strong for five+ years in spite of being saturated in water once) and others just aren't. Same goes for dial scales. A reliable scale doesn't have to be expensive, but it's possible you just ended up with an unreliable model.
Seriously, change the battery. If that doesn't help, then consider replacing your scale. Sometimes a two dollar battery is all you need.
I was always told not to weigh myself on a tiled surface as it's not completely even. That said, it sounds like your scale is broken! Definitely get a new one, and weigh yourself on a completely even surface if possible.
I'm not sure about dial scales being more accurate. I have a dial scale and a digital scale but I use the digital for now as I'm too fat for the dial, lol.
A few other posters suggested changing your scale's battery. I had the same problem as you a few weeks ago (or thought I did. Really, I just didn't want to believe the number in front of me. Ah, delusion...) and thought I'd replace the battery instead of replacing the scale. There was really no point. I don't know how much scales are where you live but it was less fiddly/expensive/time-consuming to just replace the scales for $30.
I'd wait a little bit, then try again and see if that reading is more accurate. If the floor you're on is weird in how level it is or the temperature, it might throw it off a bit.
But as far as wishing you weighed that much, you WILL! If you keep doing what works for you, you'll get to that weight and below! It's an exciting thought!
Hopping on and off can be your problem. I have a Taylor and it has memory, it will show the last weight and then go to the current weight. This happens in nanoseconds but you need to stand still for a little bit. If you just can't resist hopping on and off wait about five minutes between. My Taylor is years old and I believe it to be accurate. I leave it in the same place and do not move it.
Second recommendation for a Tanita - I have used mine for over six years and it has never been inaccurate or inconsistent, though it needed new batteries twice.
Regarding tile floors, my scale fits nicely on a single 1 square foot tile. It was recommended by a poster (tessendicot? sp?) in the Weight Watchers forums.
