Can yoga really help you lose weight? I've read somewhere that it can, but IDK. I enjoy doing yoga, it puts me in a better mood, and I find it funner than running two miles on the treadmill every flippin' day lol.
So, can you really lose weight by doing yoga?
I think of yoga as strength and flexibility training. If you do it with some sense of intention, holding poses a bit longer than is comfortable, etc. you can lengthen and build up muscle just by using your body as the resistance weight. I have been doing yoga for years with varying levels of frequency and intensity, and it really makes a difference in how fit and toned your body looks. It won't provide a cardio workout, but it will build muscle. A side bonus is that it works your joints nicely to keep them lubricated and in good working order. Yoga is a fantastic fitness activity!
Some people do lose weight through yoga. They generally do long practices with lots of sun salutations ( A and B ), standing poses, etc. 6 days a week AND follow a really clean diet and lifestyle. Check out some of the 'Ashtanga' yoga websites, and youtube 'Ashtanga yoga primary series' for starters. You can definitely work up a sweat and improve your cardiovascular fitness...
