Default Too much selenium causes hair loss-IDP multi vitamin

Reports suggest that too much selenium causes hair loss. An IDP multivitamin has 142% of the daily value in 1 pill. We are to take twice daily. Has any drawn a correlation between this and hair loss on the diet?

Please advise!

I checked my bottle and all the stats are for 2 pills, our recommended dosage. Hope that helps!

Hair loss is common in any diet that you lose weight quickly. It happened to me on Atkins, and to a lesser form here on IP. However I've started adding gelatin (protein collagen) to my IP pudding each day and I've noticed the hair loss stopped. It may be a coincidence or not. Either way the hair loss generally starts about the 3rd month and last for a few months.

Does it grow back after the few months?

Mine always has. It's just a temporary thing.

Hi. It doesn't help! That's the issue, according to certain stats we are getting too much in 2 pills. I am thinking of cutting back to one pill. Continuing to research.

Why don't you just research an alternative multivitamin, would hate to see you missing out on other nutrients that come with the vitamin just to avoid one that's listed on the bottle.

I've been told that the same manufacturer of IP vitamins makes QUEST vitamins. There are many people on the alternative plan that can offer up what they are using as a multivitamin though!

I also lost my hair and it's been growing back for a few months now. When my hair is in a pony tail I have this little halo of hair that's about 2-3 inchs long (as it won't fit in the pony)

I lost alot of hair while on the diet the first time. I stopped for a few months and am now restarting. In the meantime my hair has stopped falling out and is growing back in. I can't say wether or not it was the vitamins of the weightloss itself but regardless as it is a temporary thing and the loss of weight is more important to me...even though I whined and complained and freaked out till it stopped lol. :P

Hi Dana, what type of gelatin (protein collagen)? My hair is falling out and my hairdresser made a comment yesterday how much of it was falling out. I know it grows back, however if can stop the loss somewhat that would even be better...

There's also a hair loss thread (I posted in there what my coach recommended to me reference the hormonal changes as to why the hair is falling out). It recommends OMEGA III and an ANTIOXY - you could get both from the regular health food store...which is what I did.

I say this on the Today show and other articles as well. It really did give me pause to think. Having a thyroid problem which causes thinning hair means that I have to hold on to every strand until it has finished its natural life

The 2 caps we take mean that we are 42% over the daily recommended allowance, per the label, which for some may not be a problem, but for others may be just a tipping point. Know that the supplements have all been scientifically prepared for the program, but as we see in weight loss, we do not all react the same. On other diets, I have never lost my hair, and some definitely do!! I am taking Biotin to offset any loss as well.

However, the article does give pause for thought!!

I use Great Lakes Gelatin, which is a protein collagen. They have their own website, but I bought it on Amazon. I also take Nordic Natural Ultimate Omega. I'm am 100% positive that this has kept my hair loss to a minimum and now no hair loss at all.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the IP multi-vit as really this happens on just about any diet when we lose weight fast. It puts a stress on the body and as a result you temporarily loose some hair. Same thing happened to me on Atkins. This diet is so low in calories, you really need a multi-vit.

We're not getting nutrients from the usual source, carbohydrate foods so, we're getting them from supplements. The potassium pills are a high dosage too. I take biotin for hair loss. When I run out of IP vitamins, I'm going to buy a multivitamin I saw at CVS that includes several more nutrients we need plus the biotin. Less pills = less filler products I'm consuming.
