I was wondering I am going to try the dash diet as have borderline high blood pressure. I did it today but you need 5-6 grains and when I was done for the day between everything I was at 265 carbs. That is too many for me as there are a lot in fruit also.

So i was wondering is it more important to have the 5 grains or just get the 40 grams of fiber.

Also would you know any low carb grains.

Thanks

It depends on what suits you personally. What sort of problems do you get with carbs?

None with carbs but ever since I added 6 servings of whole grains my belly has been sick and I live on the toilet. Been about 4 days now.

Thanks

The fiber was added a little too quickly, your body will adjust...

Am I right in thinking that you're the person who is going through a really rough time with anxiety and loss of appetite at the moment? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about what sort of diet you follow, just make sure that you keep eating, that you enjoy the food as far as is possible, and that your body does well on it.

Cutting the non-fiber carbs probably isn't going to help much, because it's probably the fiber causing the digestive/bathroom problems, not the other types of carbs.

Dramatically increasing fiber tends to do that, regardless of the type of diet you're on.

You can either "tough it out" until your body gets used to the fiber, or you can go back to your "normal" fiber intake and add fiber more gradually.

I'm glad to hear you're eating again, hon. How's the anxiety doing?

Fibre is healthy, but living on the toilet is not healthy. Cut back to where you were at before in terms of wholegrains, then add a small amount. Give it a week, try adding a little bit more. If you get diarrhoea again, cut back. Not everyone can tolerate high levels of fibre, especially if they have Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other gastro-intestinal problems.

As for carbs, if you don't have any problems with carbs in general, then stop worrying about them. You can do this diet or a low-carb diet, but you can't do a low-carb version of the DASH diet. It looks like a healthy diet to me and a perfectly good one to try, provided you work with your bowel tolerance.
