Exercise! - New 4 week challenge starting Monday Feb 17, everyone welcome

02-15-2003, 10:00 AM
Hi to All

This last 4 weeks went by so fast, it sure kept me moving.

My goal will be 45 miles again this time, I will be doing the walk away tapes again and maybe if the weather gets nice I will be able to get out for a bike ride.

Everyone is welcome, just set yourself a goal no matter what your exercise is that you do and keep track of your miles.

If anyone wants to start today that is good, I put down Feb 17, it seems to make it a little easier to start on a Monday. :dizzy:

My fiance and I are starting a new walking program tomorrow. My goal is for us to stick with it for the 4 weeks. Not necessarily measured in miles or minutes, just walking 3-5 times a week for the 4 weeks. I will also start a strength training program tonight.
I want to do it 2x a week for the 4 weeks. Those are my goals, and if anyone wants to help encourage me, feel free to!

Ashley :)

I'm kinda excited about joining an exercise challenge, but I really don't know what type of goal to set for myself. Any suggestions?

02-16-2003, 03:01 PM
Hi everyone,

Poppyseed, My suggestion is to just challenge yourself to move everyday the first week. Then maybe say you will walk a mile the second week. Whatever, you do just don't give up. If you look at the last challenge you will see I didn't meet my goals. In the beginning I struggled just to move my fanny off the couch. It is still a struggle but I do find I enjoy my half hour on the treadmill. Enough preaching from my soapbox, HAVE FUN :)

I joined in the last challenge half way through, so this time I will be on from the start.

I am challenging myself to jog/walk 45 miles in four weeks (that is an average of 2 1/4 miles 5 times a week). Also I will do weights 3 times a week.

I am looking forward to hearing from all of you.

Good luck, Anne

Thanks for the advice. Okay.... I challenge myself to do at least 30 minutes of yoga everyday and to go to the gym at least 3 times. Does that sound reasonable? I usually go to the gym with my friends a couple of times a week, but sometimes we just get lazy, so I want to be more regular about it. I think the yoga will help center me somewhat, so I will think more about me and less about food -does that sound like a smart plan?
Everyone else = Good luck with your own challenges!:D

My walking goal is 60 miles in 4 weeks. (Average 15 miles per week. ) I started Saturday. I have 6 miles in already and i plan to walk 2 miles today. I'm sure this challenge will help me alot!!!

02-17-2003, 11:34 PM
My challenge is to do 20 miles in 4 weeks. I know it may not seem like much to some of you but it's a lot for me!!!

Im going to Aim for 60km walking in the next 4 weeks. Not sure how many miles that is think around 27

Hi everyone! I'm new here, but ready for a challenge. I need a little encouragment though. I have lost 50 lbs since 11/07/02. But I think I'm at a stand still. I NEED to exercize. If anyone has any encouraging words, I would love to hear them, thanx!

Hi everyone:

Its great to be back into another 4 weeks of exercising and great to see a lot of new people who are starting to exercise.

It does not matter if you are just starting the most important thing is that you have started and that you are getting in some exercising even if it is just a little it is a start. I have found over the years that it does become routine and for me it has become a habit, I exercise everyday.

I also find that setting a goal helps me to try harder to make that goal at the end of the challenge. So far this week I have done 8 miles of walking...:)

Have a great week!!!!!

Well I guess I will join along with you....tried getting some people from Ontario to start excercising ..but no one responded so if I can join you guys that would be great. I plan on doing 30 minutes of walking each day. Keep it up everyone.

Hi I love a support group that is encouraging and uplifting...
Kudo's to you for having this here for us.
I walk on the tread mill 4 times a week (at least 2 miles a day)and just started this week going to the gym M/W/F (at least 30 min there) I will have to figure out my goal...Just found you and need to do a little homework. Great to here any encouraging words...

A quick question...
do you think the water intake should be more than the usual 6-8 cups a day if you excercise a lot??
Thanks for the info

02-23-2003, 09:33 AM
With regards to the water question, I think it depends a bit on how much you sweat! In general I would drink more water if I was exercising. Plus, it cools you off a lot. Beware special sports drinks - they are really only useful for the superathletes, most gym people don't need them.

Alright, here are my exercise goals for the week. I am going to go swimming for at least 30 minutes 3 times this week and I am also going to make it to the early morning yoga class at the gym on Wednesday morning. I also want to start a walk/run routine at the gym. (I got a book about learning to run, so I'm very excited!)

I hope everyone else is excited about this week too! I also suggest we challenge ourselves to try a new recipe this week and post the results, so we can see if we can break the old food habits and start with new food habits (and add some variety!) Have a super day everyone!

Hi everyone,

I have been doing my walking tapes faithfully everyday, so that is great, it sounds like everyone else has been doing lots of exercising and setting goals.

Poppyseed I am going to challenge myself to eating a salad this week... it has been a long time since I have had one, so that is good for me to get a jump start on eating a little more healthy.

I am off to do my walking tape, maybe I will get in 4 miles today......;)

I have a great salad suggestion! From time to time, I get a craving for Taco salad, and you can enjoy the taste without having the psyco taco/bowl shell and the nasty sauce. (Okay, it's actually really great, but I'm trying some aversion therapy here!)

I start with a bed of mixed lettuce and some baby spinach leaves (this is an iron booster) and I top it off with my favourite veggies - good ones include peppers, red onion, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Then I add some canned red kidney beans (drained) and some crumbled mexican flavoured tofu (you could use lean ground beef or chicken, etc...) Sometimes I very quickly stir fry the beans and the 'meat' before adding it on top. I then add a lot of grated cheese, usually reduced fat, and then add a low cal dressing. Finally,if I have them on hand I add a few crumbled tortilla chips to the mix, but you could also add homemade croutons.

Now, I know that this is not completely nonfat, etc... but I think it makes for a good, filling main course and it covers all the major food groups if you have a whole grain roll with it, and it gives you calcium, iron, and lots of other vitamins. Plus, it satisfies cravings for nachos and other mexican foods that aren't as healthy.

I think the sneaky things with salads is that some are ultra low fat/low cal, but have no nutritional value, and the rest are usually the opposite - filling but very high cal./fat. You have to be pretty inventive to get around this problem!

Does anyone else have salad ideas?

Hi... I am a newbie but will join in here... my goal is to work out at the gym at least 3 times a week. I started 2/16 and so far am "ahead" of schedule. When I can't work out I try to do stairs at my apartment complex (takes less time when I am rushed).

Hello everyone,
It is Monday so I am checking in with week 1's totals. I was out of town so I didn't jog on my treadmill, but I did walk at least a half hour a day. Actually it was a non stop trip. So I am saying that I met my gaol of doing 2 1/4 miles for 5 days. It is now time for me to hit the treadmill.

Enjoy the week of exercise. Tahoemom

PS I'm so glad to see so many people exercising with me.

02-24-2003, 04:30 PM

I have walked 12 miles this past week. I also have to start drinking my water, usually I drink 8 cups a day, but I have not been doing that much in the past while so I will start this week and get a handle on that.

That salad sounds good Poppyseed, another goal of mine this week.

Happy exercising and have a great week.

Hi Suzanne and everyone!

12 miles is really impressive! Do you listen to music as you go?

I was at the gym today and had a great workout. I did walking/running, the bike, the rower, the stepper, and some stretches and it was really wonderful. I find it's so hard to make myself actually get up and go, to work it in my schedule, but once I'm there it feels fantastic.

02-24-2003, 07:52 PM
Hi Poppyseed, I use the Leslie Sansom walk away the pounds tapes, I use the 2 mile tape everyday.

I really like the workout and the best part is I do not have to go out into the cold and snow and walk. I also ride my outdoor bike as soon as I can get out and ride which won't be anytime soon we just got about 10 inches of snow or more yesterday on top of the other 10 inches we had on the ground. So it will be a long time before I will be riding the roads. :(

Have a great week!!!!!!!!!!!!

How's it going??

I am down for 10 milies this week, keeping up with the exercising and trying to keep a handle on the food intake:( not bad but could be better, I have done better this week than previous weeks so that is ok..

It won't be long till I will be shedding my winter coat... (I hope) :D looking forward to that. So I will for sure be keeping up my miles each week.

Really looking forward to spring and getting outside for my exercise.

Hope you had a great week, ttyl.

I am looking for more exercise goals this week. I managed the swimming three times last week, and I made it on the track once, but I never made it to yoga class. I think I am going for swimming again this week, plus two sessions on the track, and maybe a work out on the weights, which I haven't done for a long time.

Now that a new month is here, what are everyone's resolutions?

03-06-2003, 07:39 PM
Hi to everyone!

I started doing 3 miles today which is good, that should get me doing a few more miles a week.

So far this week I have done 8 miles which feels good. My goal is to do the 3 miles on a daily basis. Poppyseed you are really doing well, getting in a lot of exercise.

Have a good weekend..

:) Suzanne

Thanks Mad!

I didn't make it to the gym yesterday, but I will go today. Haven't gotten in any swimming, but I have gone to the gym twice (T and W), so it hasn't been a totally lost cause!

Another week has passed, it goes by fast.

I have been walking everyday and keeping up with my daily exercising which is great. Hey Poppyseed when I miss a day or so I figure it is ok and I get right back at it the next day or the next as long as you get back at it that is the main thing.

I have done 10 miles this week, I hope to get doing my 3 mile tape a few more times a week.

Have a great day.

03-13-2003, 11:30 PM
Well that 4 weeks went by fast, I am almost to my goal. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to make it.

Hope everyone is doing good.
