What is the deal with the makers of Halloween Costumes?! I mean come on...America is NOT full of thin people. We have real sizes, lumps, bumps and soft places so why are most of these stores filled with outfits that fit only the super skinny and why are they so slutty looking?! Even the "plus size" ones required a women with a real body to dress like their smaller counterpart and yes I get it, there are some women who don't care but I do. Any hello their "plus size" is a freaking joke. Someone needs to teach someone to measure right and another thing just because you add on a few extra inches of fabric doesn't make it okay to jack up the price.
So can you tell I went looking for a costume today? ;)
Okay let me add this: If I could get away with it I would wear the tiny slutty costumes but since I can't I am just going to whine about it LMAO

Well, first the plus size thing. Seems costumes and patterns are the only things that haven't gone supersized or taken up the trend with vanity sizing. It's confusing because you would expect a plus size to be for 14W and up, but really, it's more like what 'used' to be 14W and up that is today's 10-12.

Next, the slutty stuff. Yep. Tis true. I tried to find a bo peep costume as wer are going as characters from Toy Story and most bo peep costumes are slutty ones - bo peep?

That's why I make all our costumes. Much easier that way and you can be more creative.

The only costumes you can easily find in non-slutty form are witches.

Seriously, I HATE the fact that costumes, even those marketed to girls and tweens, have skirts up to, well, you know where. And there is no need, ever, to have anyone dress up as "Sexy Candy Corn" (seen it).

Here's a great example. When you get a picture in your head of "Little Bo Peep", what do you think of? Something like this, right?

http://www.teachersandfamilies.com/nursery/Bo%20Peep/LBP%20lost%20her%20sheep.jpg

Here's the "child" version of that costume:

http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/27227.jpg?zm=800,800,1,0,0

And then, the adult:

http://halloweencostumeworld.com/images/00757.jpg

This makes me more mad than I can say, and usually inspires a rant each Halloween, so I will be quiet for now. I have a standard, full length, with sleeves witchy outfit I wear every year, just so I don't have to go and get all fired up about this while I contemplate the wall of short skirts and thigh highs.

It's true. I sew a lot and sizes run more to the UK or 'traditional' sizing, no vanity sizing in the sewing pattern department! It makes me feel huge. I much prefer going to Ricki's where I'm a size 6, but in what world am I a size 6?! LOL

Exactly!!

I stopped wearing halloween costumes as an early teen. Now as an adult, I find I need one for workplace parties every year (for the past 2 years).

I do fit into these sizes now... and, I feel like I can wear something slightly sexy. BUT-these clothes are way way way too far. No matter what my weight, I could be a model, perfect everything, and I still would never want to show my butt to everyone! How is this okay? Literally, I have tried this stuff on, and one false move, and there is a peep show for all to see!! Not to mention there is NOTHING work appropriate, and if I had kids, what kind of example would I be setting for them by wearing one of these outfits?

I know these outfits should exist, for ladies who LIKE to show their butts, or feel comfortable being a little "showy" sometimes. But shouldn't there also be an option for the rest of us who like clothing a little more "modest"...

Thank you!!! I thought I was the only one who gets so annoyed by this!! I wouldn't have worn this stuff as a tiny teenager. Can I pay extra for some more fabric to cover my butt please?!!? (for reference, see mandalinn's Adult Bo Peep!)

That "child's" Bo-peep costume is sick! I can not believe that anyone would put that on there child. Soooo bad.

Oh and was laughing at the "Sexy Candy Corn"

How come nobody makes costumes anymore? When I was a kid I only wore homemade costumes and my mom was a full time working single mom who was not crafty (didn't really sew or have a sewing machine) One year I was Little Bo-Pepp and my sister was the sheep. For my costume my mom found a blue dress with puffy sleeves at a second hand store and sewed a wide ribbon around the waist. Stitched some ribbon on a straw hat and pulled the sides down and tied it under my chin so it looked like a bonnet, then she tied a ribbon on my dad's shillelagh and put white stockings and shoes on me! i loved that costume :)

Oh and for my sisters sheep costume she took a white pillow case and cut a hole in the end for her head and one on each side for her arms, she then glued cotton balls all over it. I can't remember how she made that head piece but it was like a baby bonnet that she tied ribbons around the corners to look like ears and glued cotton balls on it. she then put her in white leggings and long sleeve shirt with black shoes and gloves. She looked so cute and she was only about 3 or so

I didn't make up the sexy candy corn, by the way:

and the variation, the "candy corn witch":

I can't sew, and I don't have a sewing machine, anyway. :( It's sad because my mom made all of our costumes when my brother and I were little. I wish I knew how to do that.

I am so glad I'm not the only one here! All my kids are teenagers so they wouldn't let me try and make them a costume if I paid them. Use to make them all the time. For me, this is the first time I have wore a costume in 14 years lol I guess I was more than naive thinking I could just run into party city. So I just purchased some pieces here and there and put it together...I guess I shouldn't have waited till the night before huh? My girlfriend is getting married and it's a Halloween themed...how cool is that?
As for the type of costumes they are marking towards kids! I'm with you all...it's disturbing. I was looking on the one wall till I notice it was for juniors. Why does a pre teen need a sexy kitty outift?
If I could have found the sexy candy corn outfit I might have tried it out hehehe
I was about 2 seconds away from cutting some holes in my sheets and going old school! :ghost:
Edit to add: The party city commercial came on and I saw a corn outfit..it was on a little girl but I saw it lol

This is reminded me, one year my mother (I got her crafty DNA) was having a hard time putting something together for my little sister. Finally she pulled out the box of Halloween stuff and started slapping stuff together, putting it on her and sent her to the school party as a "what cha ma call it" and did you know she won first place? Now that is what I miss in costumes... originality!

I noticed that the majority of costumes for women are the "sexy" variety. It's one of the reasons I've made my own costume this year. I've always done this as when I was plus size I needed a costume that properly fit me and now that I'm in regular sizes most of the options are just...revealing!

No thanks, I'll keep making my own.

If you like Ren Faire or steampunk style attire, you can buy the pieces of a costume that looks more elegant than slutty (not that slutty is hard to find, just that there are non-slutty options). I know it's late in the game, and you can't just walk into a costume shop and pick one up cheap, but whenever I go to a costume party, I reuse a Ren Faire or stumpunk outfit that I've put together (by which I mean, bought the component, not made myself) during the year. You can probably find complete outfits as well, but I like searching for individual pieces.

Making costumes is so fun! I made this Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp style) last year with things I found at a thrift store. I made the hat from scratch though. I got way more attention when we went out than the girls in the slutty costumes (even at that size, probably 175lbs).

I also put together a zombie bride costume. Zombies are easy to do and a good way to destroy some old clothes that don't fit anymore so you don't go trying to wear them again!

I don't think I've ever in my life bought an actual Halloween costume for myself. I really, really want a Star Trek uniform (yes, yes, I'm a geek) but I found a place that will make them to your measurements on ebay and am waiting to hit my goal first before I order one. :D Then I'll probably just go with that ever year.

Well I ended up putting together a dark priestess costume and was pretty proud of myself! I normaly don't wait till the last minute but with school, getting engaged, kids etc...I got behind. I've already mentally started what I'm making next year! Oh and BTW that Mad Hatter costume was awesome!

I am making my costume this year. I had been a witch 2 years in a row.(I changed jobs and could get away with the same costume for 2 years) This year, I am going as the tooth fairy. I am modifying one of my " fat" dresses with an apron I am making and doing a crown.
As people who are changing weight, we should have a few old clothes on hand we can modify and add things to for great halloween costumes. Going shopping in your own closet is a great place to start for a costume. You can finish it off at the thrift store or a few accessories from a costume store.

I'm going as Queen Bee this year.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc11/vacationinvictoria/bee.jpg

It's not overly slutty, and I'll be wearing black leggings and black flats, not heels and thigh highs. And I'm getting a tiara, too

But I do agree, some costumes out there are just so slutty and if I had the sewing skills, I would have made my own. But, then again, the material is expensive so, six in one/half dozen in the other I guess.

I love that Mad Hatter costume!

Costumes, I have to agree, are really quite slutty and usually not for those who have any extra fat at all. I always find myself making a costume(I sew corsets in my spare time.) not just because they are too slutty but because they are made really poorly as well and I don't want to pay that much for something that might not last through the night.

Rainbowgirl That is a great costume! It's very sexy but classy! Love it.

Gaarasslave I LOVE corsets! That is a great talent to have. I have always wanted one made just for me.

I just bought this halloween costume:

http://www.buycostumes.com/Miranda-Rights-Adult-Costume/800713/ProductDetail.aspx

And I bought it in a size medium. The skirt of the Large fell off my hips, but the top runs a little tight. I'm going to sew on the 2 pieces together, and I'm going to wear short shorts and cute stylish tights under.

My freaking bum is showing if I don't.

I don't know who they make these costumes for. I personally don't like my bum cheeks showing. LOL

But I had to get a cop costume since My fiance is going as a prisonner. LOL I just thought this was the least skanky one. OH !! and it comes with leggings too :) So thats much easier :)

My fiance went as a prisoner too! How easy do men have it for costumes?? I tried to find a cop one but my bum and lots of my other goodies would have spilled out and it would have been all bad :o I think your costume looks cute and hope you all have a great time!

My easiest costume was a piece of white poster board, cut into an oval. I cut out a yellow circle & glued it to the center. Then I punched holes in the top & ran a ribbon through so it would go around my neck. I wore devil horns & carried a trident. I was a Deviled Egg.

Seriously took 10 minutes to make & I got a lot of compliments.

Thanks hun!! I hope you have a great time too!! :)

And the worst part is, my fiance's costume is a one-size fits all!!!

It's ridiculous.
It looked good on me, and it looks good on him.

How unfair is that! LOL

This is why making up your own costume is way more better.

One year, I wore an old lacey wedding-look type dress & did my face up zombie-ish... I was the dead bride.

One year, I was little "dead" riding hood... sexy, no? NO. I had on a black leotard & a long red cape, & again with the ghoulish face.... big raking "red marks" all across my neck, etc. "The wolf got me."

Then one year, I was a "swiss maiden" - sexy? Uh, no. The dress was knee length, and very "puffy" ... my hair in braids, think... "ricolaaaahhhhhh" Heh. :D

People get lazy & buy from a store, when really, a homemade costume is just far more artsy and you can be anything you want.

Here is my tooth fairy costume:

http://waxidermy.com/jeff/toothfairy1.jpg

I bought the wings. I made the apron, crown, bracelets and choker. All the teeth are made out of felt and stiffened to stand up. It was really fun to make. Everyone liked it at work.

This is my costume. I cannot express how much I hate this picture - the costume is SLIGHTLY too big and in the process makes me seem WAYYYY bigger than I am - which is ultra depressing. Plus, the black tights make my left calf look INSANELY huge, which it isn't. It's actually, in reality, about an inch smaller around than my right leg (which is mostly because of the post-thrombotic syndrome I have left over from my blood clots nearly 2 years ago). :(:(:(

I look in the mirror and I don't see a girl that big - yea, big, but not like that. So weird.

Anyway, excuse the look on my face - it was taken around 9 a.m. after I had already been up for almost 3 hours getting ready.

http://www.vixenrose.com/hosting/files/628/bee.jpg

On the bright side - our department at work won the hospital-wide halloween costume contest. "most creative" I think - maybe even "most participants" (we must have won that one b/c Health Records didn't win and they have 3 times the staff as us and many were dressed up). We all dressed up as Bees. Initially they were going as Staff Infection, but b/c I had already bought a Bee costume, the idea generated into bees. So there was a "Bee-Witched", "Spelling Bee", "Bee-Loved", "Queen Bee" etc. Pretty nifty! Though our picture was taken for the hospital newsletter while I was moving the car :S So I'm not in the picture :(

Rainbowgirl- I get the early AM thing. I wasn't in the best mood either. I wore silver high heel sandals and did my toe nails light blue the night before. I messed the big toes up and was going to fix them in the AM. I got up early to redo them and then I put my shoe on before they were dry and had to redo them last min again. I tried to do them and finish them off with a quick dry but it finished off the top and the bottom was squishy. they ended up lumpy and wrinkled. I usually pride myself on keeping me toenails good. Halloween drama indeed.
I like your bee costume and like that you got everyone in your department to dress as bees.

Madam Souza - I can not even imagine how frustrated I would be if I had been you. The walls would have blushed, I'm sure. I am so not a morning person - I got to work at 10 both today and yesterday and I don't remember ANY of it until about... noonish. :dizzy:

Here's another (interestingly better, in my opinion, even for crouching) picture taken about 20 minutes ago: (you can see Nilla is THRILLED lmao)
