Dear Hubby's surgery on the ear went very well. Will find out what the tests shows Friday when DH calls docs office. Goes next week to see what the specialist thinks about the lymph glands

Ruthie Thanks for the new thread.

Had good FBS this morning and weight may be starting to come down. I'm so busy with everything and DD hasn't even started school yet. DGD came in today and read a little card inviting grandparents to grandparents day for lunch on September 14 and said, "I want to take both of you that day". So will have to go. Wouldn't want to disappoint her.

Got my nails done today and found out my nail lady is going on a 2 month vacation. She recommended someone and will be seeing the other person instead. The one she recommended is the owner and she and her hubby are good, but the last few times she did my nails she was in a hurry. Her hubby is slower and gentle as well. May not have pedicures while my lady is gone.

I sure hope I can get back here more often. I really think things won't get a whole lot better till DD starts school in October and I get things on a regular schedule with the little GS.

Will try to check in tomorrow.

Good morning. Did not take any meds last night (forgot) and FBS was 5.0 this morning. Weight was down a bit to 178 which was encouraging. In August I pity ate myself up to 183.

Butterfly, the only thing that motivates me to work out is to get into the workout clothes first thing in the morning. Then I do it! Lately I've not been doing it but this month will be different.

Just went back tot he old thread and read Reimontana's story. very inspiring and what a great doctor!

one of the things I like about the way I work as a health professional is that I can tailor appointments to the needs of the client. Most take about 30 minutes for their appointments, but some need more on a regular basis, and some take more once in a while. Sometimes I spend an hour or more with someone. This is what happened for Rie, and its so important. Rie: do you think this TLC and encouragement is part of your success?
Many studies show that giving someone time and the feeling they are cared about is more important than the treatment. and that treatments work if the patient feels the caregiver cares about the outcome. Its one of the reasons a good family doctor makes a big difference. The regular contact with a known caregiver who is "watching" the progress makes a difference.
Rie's story is a great example of this.

For myself, fell off the good eating wagon yesterday, but climbing back on today. will be craving the carbs all day though. :(

I am enjoying myself at the lake, and went for two walks yesterday, so exercise is not a problem. Hope the weather will clear up though, so I can sit outside more, and less time inside. DH has some outside jobs for me today too, and I plan to do my yoga dvd.
have a good day friends.

Happy September!

Wow, I can't believe that it is September... Thanks for getting us over here, Ruth.

Thank you for all your kind responses to my story. It was very therapuetic for me to write it. Fatmad, I totally agree that the kindness and support that I have experienced at my dr office has been a big part of my journey. That whole office is kindness and caring people - the receptionists, the lab people, nurses, everyone. I actually kind of look forward to my appointments. I wish all medical offices were able to find the luxury of time to treat everyone individually.

Ruth, cool on the dropping ticker. I know that August was hard for you with the injury. Let's hope that the cool fall weather is better for you.

Trish, hang in there. I think it was several months after ds and gs moved in before I felt like I had a handle on my schedule.

Bonnie, my working out trick is this. I rise, start the coffee and get totally dressed in my workout clothes - including my shoes. I have a rule for myself that I must be totally dressed and in my shoes before I can decide that I won't work out. It is too funny how much it works. I also reward myself with lots of feedback. I keep track of my activity level and it becomes self supporting. I am working toward a long term goal of a presidential fitness medal www.thepresidentschallenge.org. I earn points everyday for workouts and regular activities. It is strangely motivating. Good luck.

Have a great day!

Rie

Rie: I hear you about being dressed and ready to go. But I am not a morning exerciser, and find afternoons are my thing. If I can get to yoga about 430 or 5 pm, I am fine. I like walks, usually after supper. So as long as that part of my day is clear, I can do it.
I don't know why I am this way, just am.

We got a call just before noon to go pick up youngest DGD. The school gave us the address of a place to take her to get help for her ear which is infected. She had tubes in her ears in 2008. One has fallen out and the one that hasn't seems to have an infection around it. We got her an antibiotic and hopefully there will be a big improvement when we go back in a week.

I used to be a morning exerciser, but just don't have the time any more. Bonnie I have a difficult time with motivation, but I am working on it. I'm determined to start exercising this month so I started with a small amount last night just to get me started. Because of my new schedule with the grands, I will probably become an evening or even before bedtime exerciser. I've heard you shouldn't exercise before bedtime, but it sure didn't keep me from sleeping last night.

Rie The reason I love my new doc is that he takes the time to talk to me. DD went to him and didn't tell him she was our daughter and he did the same thing with her. Got to love a doc who cares that much about his patients.

Fatmad So glad you are enjoying your time at the lake.

Ruthie Congrats on your weight being down this morning.

Slim, CatholicCajun and everybody else

Y'all have a nice evening.

Well, oldest DGD came home with 3 rashes on her leg that her gym teacher thinks is poison oak. She has no idea where she got it. Oh the joys of grandparenting. My son had it twice and the second time it was really bad. I sure hope this is the only time for her.

Hello all!

fbs has been up a little today despite a good workout and very little food today. I think it is stress as I have been stressed and agitated all day.:?: Oh well, the highest was actually 104 but I am never over a hundred. Is it possible that it stayed up because I didn't eat much?

I am basically packed and ready to go in the morning. We are headed to the mountains to camp along side one of my favorite high mountain trout rivers, the Boulder. If you every saw the movie "a River Runs Through It" with Robert Redford, the Boulder was the river they used in the film. It is primitive camping. I hope that I am still able to tolerate sleeping in my Explorer. My fly rod is ready and I am bringing two books along. I have plans to watch my carbs so that I can save them for the smore that I plan to joyfully eat each evening by the fire.:D

Fatmad and Trish, I think that each of us has an optimal excercise time when we tolerate/enjoy/can cope with working out. We are lucky if we can find that and then have a life that allows our preference.

I hope that you enjoy the beginning of this long weekend. I will be back to read all your posts and catch up in a couple of days.

Happy September everyone!

I haven't posted in a week or so, I have been on holiday but I have been working out every day for 40 mins on my cross trainer and have lost 3 lbs, 2 inches off my waist and my blood sugars have dropped by 50%, still a bit high but are pretty much normal by mid-afternoon.

I have to work out every day, if I miss just 1 there's a chance I will miss tomorrow as well. I'm disappointed with my weight loss and was expecting more but I'm sure it will come off in time. I'm not giving up this time. It's a life style choice I have made now!

Hope everyone is ok XX

JingerBird Dont beat yourself up you may of only lost 3 pounds but I bet you have gain some muscle and that weighs more then fat.

I jest have tons of dvd I would like to start using to help put some sculpting on these muscles . I will def have to try what Rie suggested . I rearranged the living room yesturday hopeing that it will give me a push to jump on the wagon.

So I weiged in today the scale says I weigh 284.5 now I will be updating my ticker getting closer to that first goal of 25 pounds:carrot::carrot: I hope everyone have a wonderful Labor day weekend!

Butterfly 50: Thanxs for the support. I have to plan ahead for my exercise. I have to set my goal the day before and not divert from my plan, ever. I bought a cross trainer and I do 40 mins every evening as soon as I get home from work. I pod on, off I go. I really enjoy it now. It's kind of me time, a way to unwind after the day. My family know not to disturb me and I will gladly listen to them as soon as I have finished. I sometimes drop my bag and go to my cross trainer without even speaking. They know I've had a bad day then!

Fatmad: Glad you are having a nice time. it sounds really relaxing.

Rie: Your trip sounds fab, sounds like a beautiful place!

You chickies are so good about exercise. I feel like a slug but am definitely giving walking a try this morning no that the leg is nearly normal. A trip down for the mail will be a start. Little Jazz will come along and will think he's died and gone to heaven.

Had another low (2.3) this morning and realized I forgot to eliminate the glyburide when I set up my weekly pill box. A thin bagel with cheese and some grapes seem to have fixed the problem.

Today will be another day of healthy eating ... not hard to do with all the great veggies this time of year although I fear I may be turning into a tomato! I baked an egg in my ratatouille for lunch yesterday and it was yummy. Today I plan to make a lentil soup with some chard and tomato added. Right now, I have enough chard to feed the 8th army!

I do hope everyone enjoys this last long weekend of the summer.

Ruth and all, what is it with the thin bagels and thin buns, they have as many carbs as the regular squishier ones. There is a low carb grocery in Toronto, may go there someday, or even into Buffalo NY sometime when visiting my dad to get some other stuff. Can't get low carb desserts here, some sugar free, but usually also low fat. sigh* Canadians sure don't have the range of products our American friends have.
Have good weather here today, will walk this am, since its getting hot later. I may take the kayak out later if the winds calm and the water isn't too rough.
Happy Labour Day weekend friends!

Mad, that's very true about the burger buns - they do have more calories than the regular ones. The PC bagel thins (170 cals) , however, are less than a regular sized bagel at 272 cals. WW has a bagel that's 160 cals but I seldom see them here in the boonies. I guess I need to sneaka cross the border sometime next month.

You are doing great, Bonnie!

I am an afternood exerciser. I walk on the treadmill and/or elliptical while I watch my soaps. It makes the time fly by and I'm killing 2 birds with one stone. I'm going to watch the soaps anyway, and I would probably be lying in my recliner otherwise.

Rie, I read your story in the August thread. It's incredible that you have done so well with both your diabetes and your weight in only a year. Kudos to you!

Fatmad & Ruthie I noticed that about reg/low calories a while back. I was checking to buy the lowest calorie ice cream. That is when I found out that the diet ice cream I had been eating had more calories than the regular version of it. Now I try to remember to always check the calories. Why buy diet food or so called low cal foods if I can have the regular for less.

Bonnie and Slim Y'all are doing a great job with your weight loss and exercise. I also love the Leslie Sansone dvds. Also have stationary bike I can ride while I watch tv, but I find riding it a drag. It is one of the best ways to exercise so I need to work on that.

Looking forward to 3 day weekend with family. Haven't had family around for the holidays except Christmas in such a long time. I think we just might fire up the grill Labor Day.

Y'all have a great Labor Day week end.

TRISH -- I buy yogurt icecream; the dark chocolate one has only 90 cals per half cup; that is my cold treat. The regular one gives me the trots.:(

Couldnt make it in for 2 weeks becuz our internet was off during the transfer and the date got mixed up ; and our phone was tranferred too early. Just a bunch of terrible mixups and blunders. Then my pc wouldnt work; just got bleeps. A young fella thinks my ram memory sticks got loosened in the move; meanwhile I ordered a new laptop. Got a good price on a HP; only issue is that I keep accidently putting the keyboard into french mode and cant get it back out. :dizzy:

We are finally moved into our new house; what an adventure. So glad it was spread out this time; half our movers didnt show. The younger ones did come and worked their butts off as did our lady helpers before and afterwards. Considering all the chaos, damages, and stress, my eating was fairly good.

Now its time to rest for awhile; will be having company this weekend from the south, but will do just the bare necessities.

Have a great long weekend ... Rosebud :flow2:

Patty, I buy regular ice cream, but I consider it an occasional treat, not an every day thing. I have tried different lowcalorie, low fat ones, and it just doesn't taste good to me. I would rather have an occasional small dish of ice cream that I really enjoy than have something I don't really like every day. Know what I mean? It's that way with many low fat, low calorie foods. They just don't taste right to me. So instead I eat the regular, and just watch my portions. I do watch carbs because of my diabetes. When I was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes I ate sugar free popsicles. That helped get me through that first summer. For some reason, they taste OK to me.

House is sold, another one is bought, but won't move in until Oct. so I have a lot of time to pack.

One brother is recovering nicely, but the other is still in hospital waiting for a transfer to a place that as the equipment to take care of him.

Lots of new people have joined since I was here last. I have been lurking every so often when I had the time.

Eating has not been so good, but I've managed to keep my BS under control and have lost a couple of lbs. as well.

Going to check out some of what I have missed.

Hello all!

I am back from the mountains. I had a wonderful time. On Friday, I went up early to get a campsite. I spent the whole day by myself sitting in a camp chair reading a novel. It was lovely.

I did pretty well with my eating and I enjoyed my s'mores by the fire. My blood sugar was good all weekend. The only problem I had was a low - probably caused by having a couple small glasses of wine. For some reason it drops my bs.:?:

I am sure happy to see so many of you posting again. I will be back in the morning for personals for everyone.

Bonnie, I just have to give you kudos now! You go girl! You are doing so well. Leslie videos are some of my favorites. It is good to do videos that are not too much for you now. The important thing is to get started and to feel good about it - like you are!

LINDY ~ considering all the stress you've been under, you are doing great: good bs levels, lost 2 lbs -- that terrific.

I have been doing well eating as well; even if I have a slip, I just keep going and it all seems to balance out in the end. I have discovered here too that a little wine helps to lower the bsl's -- could be another reason why wine is recommended with dinner.

Had turkey and veggies for dinner tonight; made a nice, light fruit crisp for my weekly treat dessert; all healthy too. Have a great long weekend everyone ... Rosebud :flow2:

CatholiCajun Hope you made it through Lee well. I think we are supposed to get rain from it tomorrow or the next day.

Lindyloo Glad you are back. You have had a lot of things going on in your life. You've done well for all you've been through. Good luck on your move.

Rie Glad you enjoyed your camping trip.

Bonnie I need to get my Leslie dvds out and start them again too. I'm wanting to get into real exercise again. I've been doing a few minutes of things but need to do more and better.

Rosebud I found a strawberry yogurt that is 80 calories per serving. The chocolate I found had chocolate chips in it and was 130 cals. The strawberry is very good. So glad you are here again. Missed you.

Ruthie Looks like the glyburide was causing your lows wasn't it. Hope things go well for you during your busy month.

Slim, Fatmad and others Hope y'all are having a great week end.

Well, I've decided it is time to get more serious about the weight loss. So going to go to calorie counding. Got the FBS coming down, but I want to get the scales moving. Didn't want to count calories, but I think it is going to take the calorie counting and the exercising to get the scales moving and to get the FBS lower where I want it. It is fine that I have it where the doc wants it but I want a better reading. Just have to get it all going.

Y'all have a great Labor Day and I'll catch y'all tomorrow.

OK....I'm a newbie here and I really need to lose 50 Lbs. I've been looking through all the posts and I think this is just what I need to be able to keep me motivated and I hope that I can return the favor by being motivational to others. :wel3fc:, Design Freak. Are you diabetic too? What plan are you following? Gald you could join us.

Well, BGL is good this morning but weight is on the cusp again. I think there was a bit too much food over the weekend although it was all really good stuff. I think I'm getting my appetite back but it's probably from forgetting to take my Victoza. (It's sitting right on the counter and only take a second. How hard is that?)

Lots of good veggies are around and I'm finally coming to the end of the tomato deluge. Later today I'm hoping to plant some fall greens in my raised bed - spinach, bok choy and maybe kale if I can find the seeds.

Lentil soup is on the lunch menu today. I'm moving into fall mode a bit early.

Hello All.

fbs at 84 this morning. I am planning to take my gs down to the local pond for a walk and fishing this morning. I will do my walkitout this afternoon while he is napping. We are planning to BBQ some chicken this evening and eat the last of the smores supplies for supper so I want to work off some of the calories in advance.

Fatmad, funny how those kids profess to not need their folks. Wait a bit - although she will probably never tell you outright. LOL

Ruth, does the spinach grow well? Maybe I should grab some and grow a late fall set. When does it start freezing where you are?

Hi Design Freak! Welcome. Tell us all about you.

Trish, glad to see your post. Good luck with the calorie counting.

Lyndy, Hey, 2 pounds is 2 pounds! Nice to see you back. I hope that things settle down for you now.

Rosebud, It sounds like you are doing well. I find that wine brings my bs down. In fact I have to be careful or it will cause a low. I just make sure to count the calories because I don't want it to stall weight loss. The weird thing is that I seem to have a low alchohol tolerance. Just a little, and I feel it.

Well, I hope that everyone else has a great day this Labor Day. I will check in later.

Rie

designfreak :welcome3: Glad you are here and look forward to getting to know you.

Started my calorie counting this morning. Not sure what my limit will be. Doc said 1800 cals, but I may save that number for special occasions. I hope to keep it around 1400 cals most days. I hope to get to do some exercise today... not sure how that will go. Getting Directv put in today because SIL wants Football session.

Which brings me to my latest problem... talk about kids. They move in want changes made that benefits them and then spends time talking around us about they can't afford to do pay for this and that so you don't ask them for money. I've mentioned several times that the utilities are coming in and have to be paid and they have no interest in it which leaves us footing the bill. It is DH"s DD and family. He is beginning to see what is going on but not doing anything about and I'm not sure how to handle it. I sure don't want it to destroy my marriage. It is really hard to keep my cool which has made my bs and bp to go up a bit. I don't mind cleaning after children as I expect that to some degree, but you would think the adults would clean up after themselves. I got up yesterday to dirty pans SIL was supposed to wash the night before. I had to clean them up before I could fix my breakfast and empty the dishwasher. Sure didn't know the way they really are or I might not have agreed to this as this is not what we agreed to. The 17 year old does his homework, shares a room with the baby where he gets stuck taking almost complete responisbility for him and his sisters. Their Mama and Daddy sleep most of the day and stay up all night taking no real responsibility. My daughter lived with her Daddy and me off and on for years. She never expected us to pay ALL the bills or take full responsibility for kids and house. So I'm not used to this. I still don't undrstand why a mother would want her 18 month old son downstairs on the other side of the house away from her expecting the siblings take complete care of him instead of her. There are so many things that can happen that they wouldn't know how to handle. There is no way I would ever do that. My children were my step-children and I wanted them close so I could take care of them and protect them when they were little.

Labor Day weekend ended up a flop. We didn't do anything together and DH said from now on we will do our thing and not make any plans with them. She complained on FB that she missed home (where the neighbors get together). Wasn't my fault we didn't do things... I bought nice steaks I didn't have the money to buy because they supposedly wanted to grill and the oldest GD wanted steak and got all the trimmings to go with it with the idea that we would grill and have a nice holiday dinner together. They dediced they didn't want to eat around 3ish with us and we didn't want to wait until 8:30 or 9 to eat. They ended up grilling their steaks 10 o'clock last night. The poor kids waited all day for the steak. I just don't understand where the appreciation is for what we are sacrificing to do for them.

I see so many things going on here especially with the children which have no real discipline. The oldest daughter 13 stays up almost all night with her Mom and Step- dad. Goes to the store with them and then gets up to go to school. No sleep, junk food and no real nutrition... real problems for the future. I just wonder why I'm doing this. So sorry for my venting. Just have to let it out somewhere before I blow up. As I said it is my hubby's daughter and family and I know he loves them, but I fear she and DH are just using us just like she uses her kids. I think the thing that irks me the most is that she had her tubes reversed because they wanted this baby that they have no desire to take care of and dump on the kids and me to care for. DH won't have much to do with the baby which bothers me too. I do what I can because I see a real anger brewing just under the surface of the 17 year old and who in the world could blame him. Hope I'm not over reacting:?:

Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Hello all! It has FINALLY stopped raining! We are still having strong winds, but the rain and water is subsidind, some of our flooded roads are now re-opening. Going back to work tomoorw. My FBS was 150 this morning, the highest it's ever been, that is due to too many carbs for supper last night and a frozen fruit bar. But hopefully it will be better in the morning. We should be able to walk in the morning as the rain chances are down to nothing.

ok Ladies I am not having a good day today. My eating is fine but I am feeling edgy today. I am so upset with my family it isn't funny. They can eat anything they want and they are. I am so tired of seeing the cookies and stuff they are eating.
I want something wonderful to eat today but I didn't get it. I figured it wasn't worth it. I must make me some sugar free jello cups tomorrow . I have been doing so good. It was dark today looked like it was gonna down pour. but it never rained didn't want to take the chance of it showering on me so I walked 30 min on the treadmill.
I guess I am getting a little depressed I am gonna have to find me some new foods to eat.I found a reciepe for a chicken kiev I am gonna try it you put spinach in it and a little cheese .

Good morning. I hope today is better for you, Butterfly. I felt down and gloomy on Saturday because it was so humid here so I can relate.

3.7 this morning. I think I am going to track exactly what I ate as well as the meds. Last night it was beef in a bun, raw carrots and peppers with a fruiti bar for dessert. I was expecting a higher reading but  I'm feeling pretty sore and aching this morning - not from exercise, I'm afraid. Maybe old age is sneaking in.

Happy first Tuesday after Labour Day. It feels like a new year!

Bonnie We both seemed to have had bad issue days yesterday. Hope you have a better one today. We got the rain yesterday and have had some today. In fact, the man couldn't put the pole for the dish in the ground yesterday because the hole kept filling up with water and the concrete wouldn't set. Had to reschedule. Good thing I hadn't had cable canceled yet. Any way, about the food. It isn't always easy to be good at our eating while others get the things we would like to have even when we are good through it... the job well done can sometimes be bittersweet. But try to remember that you have a "victory" day under your belt that says "I can do this". I'm trying to remember that myself.

Ruthie You are soooo funny. I think "old age is creeping up on both of us", but I am trying to ignore it.:dizzy: Not easy sometimes is it? You have a great day.

Well, I started my day off with low carb breakfast although counting the calories. Not sure how things will go. DH goes to the specialist today about the enlarged lymph glands and I'm concerned that the doctor called yesterday and we missed the call. I didn't find it until this morning. I woke DH to see if he wanted to call him, but since we are going in this afternoon he said no. I know this doctor was good at calling to check on Tony when we went to him and he did a biopsy last year. I just hope everything is okay. I think they may want to do surgery to remove the glands and for some reason I am having a problem getting peace about this. Maybe it is just all the stress in my home. I'm not sure.

Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!!!

Good Morning and Happy Fall

fbs at 80 this morning. I am not feeling very well. I didn't sleep well and I join Ruth in feeling achy and sluggish.

Bonnie, I hope that your day is better. I don't know what to say about the family eating all kinds of treats that you can't have. I get angry sometimes when my mom sends home treats for my gs that I really adore. It really feels like they are just not caring that I can't have it. Then, I feel guilty about it. The reality is that my ds has been really careful about bringing in foods that I like but can't really eat. Is there any way to get a deal with your husband that, for a while, sweats or other stuff won't be in the house? Hang in there.

Cajun I am so glad that you made it through the storm without serious damage. Have a good start to your work week.

Trish, I am so sorry about how things are going. Sooner or later, I hope that you and dh can get together on what the expectations are going to be for the kids. I hope that you can find your way to that. It is your house. I can relate because ds and I had to really work to find a system that works for us. As an example, he is responsible for all the shopping, errands, yard work, most house cleaning, and he does most of the cooking. This is how he earns his rent. He also purchases most of the grocery items that are exclusively for gs (juice boxes, single mac and cheese, cereal bars, etc). The only other change I made in the household was to switch my internet to wireless so he could also have internet. Even with all that, it has been a big adjustment and it has taken lots of communication. I know this: if you and your ds just hold back on how you feel and expectations, sooner or later it will blow up. I wish you so good luck and  feel free to pm me anytime if you want to vent or talk about other issues. I have done lots of counseling with blended families and I grew up in an extended family situation.

DesignFreak, How was your weekend?

Greetings! Hope everyone had a relaxing Labor Day weekend.

Bonnie--I hope you are feeling better today. We all have those days and feelings. :dust: I am tired of chicken and turkey. Made a marvelous pork tenderloin roast over the weekend. Seasoned with garlic and soy sauce. Yummy!

Trish--All the best wishes for your DH health. Glad to hear his doctors are following him closely.

CatholicCajun--Glad to hear you are drying out from TS Lee. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving :) We're getting backlash from it over here in Tampa Bay. Had to strategically time my swim workout between t-storms and showers for the past few days.

Ruth & Rie--Hoping you are both feeling better very soon.

Today was my 3 month doctor appointment since DM diagnosis in June. A1C was...drumroll...5.7! Doc was gobsmacked that I turned it around in such a short time. More labs--Total Cholesterol 114 (officially abnormal low--LOL!), HDL 34!, LDL 58. Lost 11 lbs in six weeks, total 26 lbs gone forever! WooHoo! We were doing the happy dance in the office. He couldn't get over it. Oh, and I told him about 3FC. Many thanks to all for your support!!!

Thanks Ladies I am having a better day today. I jest finished eating a sugarfree Jello cup with a teaspoon or a dallop of sugarfree cool whip. The weather was so nasty yesturday I walked 30 minuted on the treadmill and it kicked my butt. So I was so glad that it was nice this evening I could get my 2 mile walk in.
The thing that makes me mad is that I walk down to the corner and its off the main highway. The grass is over grown and it is so tall I am so tired of getting Bryers stuck to my clothes and shoes and it is so tall I am worried about snakes. I have complained to the Mayors office and they are susposed to do something about it butt it has been 2 weeks now and nothing.
But on the good side I made spaghetti for dinner for the family I made wheat noodles what was left I made little bags of portions size dinners for me. Things are good for me today I am doing better then the other day I was feeling down big time Everyone here made me feel alot better So I want to Thank everyone who gave me a pick me up.

Quickie check-in as I'm not sure of this connection - been having problems.

Another low this morning - 2.9!!!! I've been off the glyburide for the past few days so . I did have enough carbs with supper last night - sausage and peppers in a Kaiser roll so who knows what's going on.

just a quick hello, all well here, and am back to normal weight again. Trish, you are going to have to sit down with Tony and make an agreement about what is and isn't ok, and then he must agree to present it to them. (since you are step mama here, right?) so don't push for too much, just what he can do. Then stick to it. That may include having baby with them, so that gs can sleep!
Love to all, will come again soon

Bonnie, it is really hard to see other eating things you can't have, but I'm proud of you for holding on. Taking that walk is a good way to shake it off.

Trish, my heart goes out to you regarding the problems with your live-in extended family. They are being very inconsiderate. This is probably why they are having financial problems...they don't know how to take responsibility...or they just don't want to. It's really not fair to you, and your DH should see that. I hope things turn around, soon.

Floriduh, keep up the good work, girl!

Ruth, sorry about the lows. How is your BS when you check it other times? Does it ever get really high? Maybe your meds need to be changed. Old age didn't creep up on me, it took a flying leap!

Cajun, stay dry!

I remember a while back someone (I think it might have been Fatmad) mentioned about someone getting leg pain from Metformin. I thought mine was from my statin. I cut back to half strength for about a month to see if that would help but it didn't. So now I'm wondering about the Metformin. I quit taking it on Sunday and was going to hold it for a week, but so far there's been no change. I wonder how long it takes to get it out of your system.

Good Morning ladies:)

A quick check in this morning.

My fasting BS was 6 this morning, which is really good for me. I'm usually around 7 -7.9.

I've been busy packing the last couple of days. I don't know where all this stuff has come from. Another lb. down. It must be from all this lifting and moving around.

Well, back at it again. Have a great day everyone.

A quick check in this morning. usy cleaning house and doing the normal things for the day. Well I forgot to mention last night while I was walking I had to stop and take the drawstring in my pants and tighten them cause my pants keep sagging while I walked I keep having to pull them up. Felt pretty good though. I hope everyone has a wondeful day and will be back later.

Good Morning!

I woke early again this morning with a fbs of 82. I think I need to just accept my sleep patterns as long as I feel ok. It seems like I have spent most of my life arguing with the alarm clock and in the last few months, I can't stay asleep. Maybe it's age...... I did 70 minutes and 9500 steps this morning.

Fatmad, glad that your weight has stabilized. That was a nice post/good advice to the lady with the newly diagnosed type 1 little girl. Talk to you later.

Ruth, I am really concerned about your lows and I am just getting more confused.

Lyndy, those pounds just keep sliding off! Good luck with all the unpacking and organizing.

Carol, I hope your leg pain gets better. How is your bs without the metformin? I think it metabolizes fairly quickly, but I am not sure how long the pain will stay if that is the cause. Talk to your dr if you can,

Floriduh, :cheer2::encore::congrat:I am so happy for you and so proud of you! Getting great results at the dr is so satisfying. I personally think that only the best dr's do happy dances when things go well. LOL

Bonnie, I am glad that you feel better. Venting to us and taking a walk are great ways to work out those feelings. I would HATE to worry about snakes! That is not something that we worry much about here in Montana, except for rattlers and they aren't usually around near the river where I live. Be careful and keep calling.

Trish, I hope that your dh gets good news at the dr, and I hope that things settle down at your house. I am denying my increasing age, also.

Well, I need to get in the shower and off to work. Have a great and healthy day everyone!

We are having such cool weather. It's so nice walking in 68 instead of 85 at 4:30 am! Blood sugar better, eating is good. I have found out through trial and error have decided that my body cannot handle more than one carb for supper and one for a snack after supper, any more than that and my sugar is up the next morning. Hubby just got diagnosed with Type II he is going for a follow up visit tomorrow.

CAJUN ~ sorry about your DH; my Dad was just diagnosed with the same this summer as well, but he is doing well. He has lost some weight from being ill but looked good when we saw him yesterday. Glad you are finding out what works for you ...

THANKS TRISH -- we are having wonderful weather here; seems like summertime the last 2 days. We are settling in to our new place but still sorting and tossing; I thought we got rid of lots last time -- I am not done yet. Simplify, simplify is my new motto ... ;)

Well, had a good week with eating; always glad of that. I am using my new laptop pc; it has one quirk that it keeps changing to FRENCH MODE on me. I am sure it is a shift+ thing as that keeps happening to me a lot; I am starting to wish they didn`t do that or that we could disable them somehow. I will persevere ...

Have a great week everyone!

Carol, try taking a high b complex vitamin for a few days, and some extra calcium with magnesium. I find these help me with the leg pain, and won't harm you to take. (I do have to be careful not to overdo the calcium, I make kidney stones if I take too much!) Doing gentle stretches, especially before bed is helpful too. (this is true no matter what the cause of leg pain.)
And you are right, leg pain may be caused by the metformin, but also other things. Hope it gets better soon!

Hi Fatmad, This is day 5 without the Metformin and I still have the leg and hip pain, so I'm thinking it's not the Metformin. I first noticed it a couple months ago...if I laid on my side, after about 30 min I would get pain and have to roll to my back or other side. I have a Sleep Number bed and I have adjusted the number to see if that was the problem but it's not. When I first start to walk I am all stiff, but after I get going I'm ok. It's more of an ache than a pain. I think I will try the vitamins. I also will mention it to my PCP when I see him in a couple months. I balk at doing that, because that usually results in him sending me for several tests, which I don't want to do. I have had so many health problems this year that I'm just burned out on tests!

Hi all.

fbs at 84 this morning. Weight lifting on the excercise agenda today. I am hoping to finish my work week by getting some contract negotiations done and getting some things straightened out. (fingers crossed)

Bonnie congrats on your slipping pants NSV! Go girl!

Fatmad, good advice to Ruth on the leg pain. I used to make sure that I ate bananas or I would get leg cramps. Of course, bananas aren't on the menu anymore.

Cajun, so sorry about your dh. It might be really easy for you guys to get control of bs if you are doing it together. It sounds like your carb load is similar to mine. You are doing well at figuring out your own body.

Sorry for anyone who I missed. BBL

Yum! I seem to have my appetite back because I'd love some of that chicken right now!

Well, FBGL has been 5-something the past two mornings. I cut my Victoza dosage a bit along with eliminating the glyburide. We'll see how that goes. I used to think that low readings were a good thing but I've smartened up since then.

Still not back in the gym routine although I am finding walking less painful. Right now I am planning a return to the gym Monday morning and will do some gentle treadmill over the weekend so my body doesn't go into complete shock!

Have a great weekend and let's hope for some normal weather!

This recipe requires that you pound the chicken breasts to flatten them, but take care not to pound them so hard that you tear the flesh, making holes through which the delicious filling can escape.

6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves (1 1/2 pounds)
Salt
Black pepper
1/4 cup finely chopped shallots or onions
1 clove garlic, minced
2 teaspoons olive oil
1/2 of a 10-ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained
3 tablespoons pine nuts or walnuts, toasted
3/4 cup shredded smoked mozzarella cheese (3 ounces)
1/4 cup seasoned fine dry bread crumbs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon olive oil
1. Place 1 chicken breast half between 2 pieces of plastic wrap. Pound lightly with the flat side of a meat mallet into a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick. Remove plastic wrap. Season with salt and pepper. Repeat with all chicken breasts.
2. For filling, in a medium skillet cook shallots and garlic in the 2 teaspoons hot oil until tender. Remove from heat; stir in spinach, nuts, and smoked mozzarella. In a shallow bowl combine bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese.
3. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons of filling on each chicken breast. Fold in the bottom and sides; then roll up. Secure with wooden toothpicks.
4. Lightly brush each roll with the 1 tablespoon olive oil; coat with bread crumb mixture. Place rolls seam side down in a shallow baking pan. Bake, uncovered, in a 400 degrees F; oven about 25 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink (170 degrees F). Remove toothpicks before serving. Makes 6 chicken rolls.

fbs was at 72 this morning so I had my breakfast of an apple and peanut butter first thing. I will work out as soon as I finish here.

Bonnie, Yay! 19 pounds gone is wonderful. I love the chicken recipe. I have used it and it is really versatile. You can actually use any cheese and any veggie. I like to use part-skip cheese and chopped asparagus, too. Yum.

Ruth I am glad that you are getting a handle on the lows. Good luck with the excercise.

TGIF!!!

Rie--Thanks so very much for your support through this journey! I finally had a chance to read your post looking back over the past year. Wow! You've come a long way, baby! :bravo:

Bonnie--That recipe looks divine! Will definitely give it a try.

Ruth--Very glad to hear you are working on turning around those low BS readings.

Carol--leg pain can be caused by many, many things. Some causes are particularly worrisome (ie: DVT aka blood clots). Other causes can be sciatica, dehydration, low sodium (salt), low potassium, low calcium, etc. Since your pain is persistent, you might consider getting it evaluated sooner than later. DVT can kill if left untreated.

A quick flyby. Everything is going pretty good with extended family. DD finally talked to us and told us the problem. They are having problems with Xs over child support and hurting financially at the moment. We've explained our financial situation so we are trying to get through this time as we can. She was depressed over everything and was ashamed that they had moved in and couldn't give us any money right now. I told her that it would have been better if she had come and talked to us. She was embarrassed. I told her that we are her parents and she needs to feel she can talk to us about anything. Things are perfect, but at least now that I understand what is happening I feel better than I did when I thought they were just using us. Kids are learning to obey us and I believe that will get better.
I'll try to get back in a few days and catch up on reading and hopefully do indies.
Y'all have a great weekend.

Yeah, I got a signature. Feel like I really belong now!
My shoulder is feeling a bit better this morning, I might be able to get dressed without partner (Gary) helping today!
I was very naughty last night though. I had French fries and garlic Mayo. Learned a lesson though, I didn't enjoy it and my stomach doesn't feel too good this morning! My excuse - I haven't really eaten properly since my car got hit. The way I fool myself is ridiculous, it isn't until later that I can see I'm just lying to myself.
Still won't be able to exercise for a couple of days. I'm really missing it and my energy levels have really dropped. Something else I have learned!
Visit to the doctor as traumatic. She was more interested in my diabetes than car accident. I have refused to take Avandia. She told me that if I didn't take it I would die and she would not be responsible. I told her she was right that I have finally taken control of my life and my disease. She's got quite angry with me. I asked her to give me 3 months to see what I can do with diet and exercise before I decide to take more medication. She told me I could be I'll by then. I explained that I check my bloods 3 times a day and they have already dropped by 20%. She told me that the monitors are no good and give out false readings. I just got up and left her office a bit depressed. Ok now though. I have diabetes it doesn't identify who I am it's a small part of me that I have to deal with.
Oh and my employer is discipling me for going to the doctors after the accident during working hours!
Sorry for the rant but it's good to get it off my chest X

I still have my leg pain. On day 5 without my Metformin I got a really high BS reading that scared me, so I went back on it. My leg pain feels like a muscle pain and it is in my thighs and hips, not in my calves. It comes and goes, and it's better when I'm more active. If I sit for an hour or more, I'm really stiff and sore when I get up, until I start moving around. I will discuss this with my doctor.

I had never noticed the weight loss benefits of Metformin, but this past week when I wasn't taking it I had the appetite of a horse and have put on a few pounds. I hope that stops now that I'm back on it. I think losing more weight will help with the leg pain.

Hello all! Happy Saturday

I rose early and did a 3+ mile fast walk this morning. I made my best time yet at an average of just under 13mins/mile. I think I will be ok on the 5k walk in a couple of weeks. My bs was 72 this morning. It went way up to 135 after the walk but dropped into the 70's within an hour. Weird, cuz I felt like I was low about halfway through the walk. Maybe it is some kind of rebound effect? IDK.

Trish, I am glad that there is some communication happening with the kids. That always helps everything.

Carol, I am concerned about your leg pain. I hope that you get it checked soon.

Jinger, I am sorry that you are struggling with your doctor. I forgot - are you on any meds now? Is there some reason that you don't want to take the avandia? When you say that your readings are down 20%, what kinds of readings are you getting? If you feel comfortable, share more about your situation. Saying that you are going to die right away seems a little dramatic. I am so sorry about the car accident and all the hassles that are happening. Hang in there.

Floriduh, thanks for the feedback. Writing that "its been a year" post was very therapuetic for me and I am glad that it helps others. Good to see you posting here all the time and I hope that everything is going well with you.

Bonnie, it appears that your recipe is a hit! So proud of your progress so far.

I am completely stymied! Yesterday I did not take any meds and this morning's reading was 4.7 or 84.6 USA. (I completely forgot at bedtime and forgot the morning Victoza shot as well.) I think I've been changing too many things at once so am going to stick with the Metformin (1000mg) at bedtime, no glyburide and a 1.2 Victoza in the morning after breakfast. I have dinner with friends this evening and will be having wine so we'll see if I have a very low tomorrow.

Rie thanks for the support!
I am taking metformin 2x 850g a day. I have taken other meds in the past but I have found that they give me bad side effects. Avandia makes me put on weight, 1-2 lbs a week so I stopped taking it. I have tried about 5 different meds in the past but the only 1 that helped was metformin.
My morning levels have come down from 17 to between 10-13 in just 3 weeks and by mid afternoon my levels are 6 (normal). It really all depends on what I eat. I'm being really struck with myself and am aiming everyday for less than 75g of carbs.
I was diagnosed a long while ago but have never really bothered that much but I want to sort it out now. I'm having some really good results in 3 weeks. Imagine what I can achieve in 3 months. I've decided to carry on as I am for 3 months and then have my bloods done and see what a difference I have made.

Hello All!

Well, my morning bs was a high 107. I had actually been up for a while, couldn't sleep last night and I know that I forgot to take my evening dose of metformin. I didn't have supper til really late last night.

Yesterday I bought a new pickup truck. It is a crew cab 2006 f150 that is loaded up with lots of nice features. I am a little nervous because I haven't bought a new vehicle in a long time. The nicest part is that I am able to sell my aging, unattractive but mechanically solid Explorer to youngest ds who really needs a vehicle. I actually think that I was nervous/excited last night and that made it hard to sleep well.

Bonnie, the cell phone alarm thing works really well, doesn't it. I used it at first because it made me feel less overwhelmed. I am so glad that your family is enjoying the foods that will bring you all to a healthier lifestyle

Jinger, I think you can make really good progress if you try hard. No medication will make up for a carb laden diet. I didn't realize that avandia causes weight gain - that cant be good! I take metformin and Januvia.

Ruth, I am stymied too!;) I am surprised because 100mg metformin seems like a tiny dose?? I take 1000 2x per day! I hope the wine doesn't send you too low tonight. It lowers my sugar too. I also feel like it goes to my head much quicker these days. I wonder if that is medications, diabetes, or that I am out of practice?:D

Hi Carol, glad that you went back on the metformin. Sorry that the leg pain is still plaguing you. Even though it feels like muscle pain, is it possible that it is an arthritic condition with your hip? My dad always said that the primary symptom early on with his hip was in his thigh and rear parts.

Sorry for anyone that I missed. I will check in later.

Hi all, just a quick flyby, had an alnighter and got to bed at two, after a healthy meal, with a few extra carbs to aid my sleep. Had a healthy supper when I woke up, and am getting ready to go back to bed, and have to get up early in the morning for a meeting.
One of my problems with remembering med that I take it, but then forget whether I took it if I wasn't being mindful. SO I take it with a B vitamin tablet. That way my pee is quite yellow, and I know I have taken it! Sorry if TMI, but the B's help prevent leg pain for me, and now also help me keep track.
My weekend was quiet until last night. But the busy-ness was all good, with healhty babies and mamas, and now I am fading back to sleep. ttfn

Thanks for the reminder about B Vitamins, Mad. I got some but keep forgetting to take it.

6.1 this morning - a tad high but I did have pasta last night. I started my day with a delicious mushroom omelet and a peach. Slept too late to get to the gym but I have an active day ahead. I'll be moving wood to get my dog fence dig proof and also have pressure washing to do. That machine is heavy to lug around!

Bob's Diner, the only game in town, is now on winter hours and will be closed MTW - that removes the temptation to have a bagel of English muffin when I visit down there with friends.

happy and healthy Monday to us all.

I have a pill box for my meds with a compartment for each day of the week and each day broken up as AM Noon PM Bed. I fill it every Sunday and then I know at a glance if I took my meds. It sounds like you only take 1 med. DH takes two, so he has a smaller pill box with just the days and he puts his pills in there so he knows if he took it. Of course, yellow pee works too! LOL

Rie, your weight loss could have a big effect on how your body handles the alcohol. Also, it will be absorbed more quickly with less food in your stomach. My Metformin bottle says "No alcohol". Do you think that just means don't go out for a night on the town? LOL I would really like to have a glass of wine now and then.

I have osteoarthritis in my right knee, and I get some pain and numbness in my thigh above the knee. Maybe the arthritis is showing up in other places.
I take glucosemine and condroitin for it and it seems to help, when I remember to take it. When it's not bothering me, I tend to forget.

Good Morning All!

fbs at 84 this morning, a nice number. When I wake up and it is in the 80's, I am able to excercise without food first - much less complicated. This morning I did my hardest weight lifting and aerobics routine for 65 minutes. It was pleasant.

Hi Carol, I suspect that the weightloss, especially the body fat loss is a culprit. I think it is also the bs lowering effect. I have to make sure that I have eaten or I will get an actual low. My dr told me that as long as I am careful about bs, I can have several glasses of wine when I want. It is a nice little pleasure that makes me feel less deprived.

I like the idea of the B vitamin. Glad to know that the yellow color is ok - I thought it was just me :D. I don't have much trouble remembering my meds. I also take several supplements and I keep them in a pill keeper. Mostly because it is easier to count out 7 days worth of supplements than to stand there each morning and dose them out.

Bonnie, just wanted you to know that if you want to explore some new videos you can try them at netflix. You can also preview lots of types at collegevideo.com I also highly recommend incorporating some light weight lifting for arms and abs early in your fitness routine. You can use soup cans or filled water bottles for weights. There are lots of free sites online that can help you build a routine. I like it because I can do it while watching a favorite show.

Ruth, I LOVE bagels! My ds had been buying raisin bagels and eating them for breakfast lately. He would sometimes leave part of one behind. I had so much trouble resisting them :( In fact, we decided that he would buy blueberry or garlic bagels (I can't stand either) and it isn't a problem for me. Selfish, probably on my part but he is really good about it.....

I have been having soooo much trouble with the 3fc site. Is there any word on when it is going to be fixed? Very frustrating to get that script error message and then have the darn thing freeze up.

Well, I must get to work. Have a great day all!

I take it with a B vitamin tablet. That way my pee is quite yellow, and I know I have taken it!

Years ago, I bought a bottle of multi-vitamins at the local pharmacy. Noticed my pee never turned bright yellow, so I returned them to the drug store. Told the girl behind the counter that the vitamins weren't any good. She argued with me, "you can't know whether vitamins work or not!" She even brought over the pharmacist and told him that I was trying to pull one over on her. The pharmacist--who also knew me because his wife was one of my nursing school instructors--winked at me, and told the sales clerk, "She knows what she is talking about." I exchanged the bad bottle of vitamins for a new one, all the while the sales clerk was steaming  The new bottle of vitamins worked just fine :)

Good Morning!

fbs at 81 this morning. Last night I had some calories to spare so I drank a small glass of wine while watching football. Even though I had eaten a steak, veggies and carb serving supper, I became really light headed. I tested at 9pm and my bs was 61. My usual yogurt snack corrected it but it bothered me. I am thinking that If I am going to drink, I need 30, not 15 grams of carbs.

Floriduh, I love the vitamin story. I was happy about the vit B stories because I wondered if my reaction was normal.

Bonnie, is there any news about the young man? I hope that all is well.

Jinger, I heard about that phone app. Unfortunately, I haven't switched to a plan that includes data yet......

Fatmad, I love the idea that a good day at work for you results in healthy moms and healthy babies! Bless you.

Ruth, I hope that you didnt exhaust yourself with that power washer.

Last night I went out and ruthlessly cut back my mint patch. Darn stuff had gotten way out of hand and I mistakenly let it all go to bloom. I am hoping to cut the new growth and dry it. I already have several bunches hanging to dry now. I am alergic to bees so the blossoms create a hazard for me.

I will check in this evening.

Rie, after we talked about the wine a few days ago, I tried some in a glass of diet ginger ale. I got hot and my face turned all red. I remember having that same reaction a few months ago when I had some alcohol. I am blaming it on a reaction to my medications, although I take so many I don't know which one is doing it. The Metformin is the only one that say "no alcohol" on the bottle. I will probably try it again to see if it's really a reaction or if it was a coincidence. I don't think my blood sugar went down, but I really had more ginger ale than wine.

At a flea market I recently bought a book titled "The Common Sense Guide to Weight Loss for People With Diabetes." Actually, when I bought it, I didn't see the "for people with Diabetes" which is in smaller letters and thought it was just "The Common Sense Guide to Weight Loss." It is not a new book. It's from 1998 and put out by the ADA. I have not read the whole thing yet, but have been flipping around to various chapters that I found interesting. It is wonderful! It does not contain any magic formulas, just the cold hard facts. It covers every aspect of diabetes, answers every question you have ever asked or wondered about. It explains WHY we should do things, such as keep meals at the same size and frequency, why and how much we should exercise and the effect it has on your glucose etc. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with losing like I am. Although this is an old book, Amazon has used copies online for just a few dollars if anyone is interested.

Hello All

fbs at 81 again this morning. I lifted weights and then did a yoga video for 30 minutes. Wow, my arms were tired at the end but I felt good.

I am happy to report that my monthly weigh in today showed me another 2# drop this month. Given that I had some treats, camping, etc, I am pleased. My monthly measurements also show a 1" loss straight through the middle: bust, waist, belly, hips. I really feel pleased because I feel like I can eat this way for ever - not just until I reach "goal".

Bonnie, I hope your back gets better. Be sure to take ibutabs or other anti-inflamatory.

Ruth, that book sounds good. I will go look for it.

Carol, hopefully your reaction was not from the metformin. I consider the (once or twice a month) glass of wine to be a pleasure.

Jinger, 25 mins of working out is good. Baby steps.....;)

Floriduh, Fatmad and others, hope you are having a good day.

Still no more major low readings so I guess the glyburide was the culprit. I'm just plugging along with now eight loss but am eating properly with limited wine. My husband expected wine with every meal except breakfast and it's a hard habit to ditch completely. He's been gone nearly three years but must still be around.

I'm loaded with tomatoes and am slicing them and drying them in my dehydrator. They work well as scoops for hummus and other dips. I have red, orange and yellow slices done and they look really pretty.

This morning I had a shinny bagel (170 calories) with Laughing Cow Cheese, chopped dried tomatoes and fresh basil - a yummy breakfast!

Bonnie you might have DOMS - delayed onset muscular soreness. You've been working out really hard so you get s build up of lactic acid in muscles. The only way I know of to get rid of it is to repeat the same exercise at a lower intensity. Or wait for a couple of days. It's because you're making your muscles work. That's a good thing :)

Rie congrats on the 2 lbs things are really moving in the right direction.

Many people have drinks with metformin, so I am not sure why yours says not to drink. It is not recommended for heavy drinkers, but occasional social drinking does not seem to be contraindicated on most drug monographs.
however, the red face is similar to a reaction to sulphites that lots of people get. Almost all wines have sulphites, and red wines have more, so lots of folks can't drink wine as a result. Does the same thing happen with vodka or other grain alcohols?

I am not gonna workout today but hope to get my walk in may have to walk slower. my hip is killing me Its not actually my hip it is like my hip but go toward my butt and it is hurting. sciatic nerve pain is similar, you can read about it and decide if its worth trying things that help, (many none medical). hope you feel better soon!

haven't figured out how to quote multiple posts and do one response, so sorry for multiple posts. Rie, I am so happy for you, sugars getting in line and weight and inch losses! That is awesome.
I had a day off call yesterday and took my Lilia and her mama out for lunch and a play. Then a good yoga class, a trip to my friendly chiropractor, (headaches are getting better, but low back still having some trouble) and then to the spa for manicure and pedicure. Finally after a light supper, went to the pub for a musical jam and sing along. All fun, and home early enough for a little romance with my true love DH.
What a nice treat! AND best of all, stayed on plan for eating. I was treating myself so well, didn't feel the need for sweets or food treats. Sugars are great, weight stable, and all well.

Another morning with a 5.4 reading after no meds at all yesterday - I forgot to refill my dosette. My ticker is fibbing a bit though. I've been "snacking" too much on dried peaches and tomatoes. I am nursing chills, fever and cold symptoms this morning. Fbs at 78 and I ate my favorite apple and peanut butter. I hope to do a light workout later if my fever goes down.

Bonnie, Of Course you are doing things right! It is a cause to celebrate. Your numbers will continue to come down and stay there. I can't wait to see your progress as time goes on.

Fatmad, I think you had the perfect, lovely day! Good for you.

Ruth, I am happy that you are getting to the bottom of the bs issues. I envy you the fruit - I just can't seem to tolerate much without bs rising. I am hoping that I will be able to eat more fruit and healthy carbs when I lose more weight.

Jinger, a birthday trip to the Magical Kingdom sounds wonderful! I want to take my grandkids there but want to wait till they are older.

Carol, I am wondering also if that was a wine or alchohol reaction? I guess if we need to experiment, this could be fun, Huh?;)

Bonnie, you are doing everything right! Your diet and exercise is bringing those numbers down. Keep up the good work. Your doctor must be very pleased!

Fatmad, The wine I drank is wine I have been drinking for years and never had that effect. I do get hot and flushing from White Zifendel, and I also got it from Miller beer. But this was Reunite Lambrusco, and I always have that in the house. It was mixed with diet ginger ale so it was actually diluted. I am going to try it again sometime to see if I get the same reaction. The only other alcohol I drink is rum and coke, and I haven't had that for over a year. I don't usually drink at home, just an occasional drink socially.

Still no more major low readings so I guess the glyburide was the culprit. I'm just plugging along with now eight loss but am eating properly with limited wine. My husband expected wine with every meal except breakfast and it's a hard habit to ditch completely. He's been gone nearly three years but must still be around.

This morning I had a shinny bagel (170 calories) with Laughing Cow Cheese, chopped dried tomatoes and fresh basil - a yummy breakfast!

Ruth, I bought a dehydrator at a flea market but have never used it. I bought it because my step-son was using his to make jerky and I was going to try it, but once I put it away I never got it out again. I will have to get it out and try doing something with it. I never thought of drying tomatoes. How long does it take?

Rie, I cannot do fruit either. I do eat a small banana once in a while and I find I can do canned pears packed in juice.

Yes, experimenting with the wine could be fun, as long as I don't get carried away. I have a bad habit of taking things to excess. If I start posting irradically, let me know! LOL

I have a question for those of you who have been diabetic for a while and know more about it than I do. Lately, I have been sneaking too many carbs into my diet and my reading have been too high. I know what I can and can't eat. Yesterday, I decided to get back in control. I had scrambled eggs for breakfast and for lunch I had a piece of baked fish and broccoli left over from dinner the night before. I checked my bs every couple hours and it kept coming down about 20 points each time. Then I started to get shaky and feel weak. I thought I was having a low, but I checked and it was 127. That is lower than I usually am during the day, but not really low. I sucked on a piece of hard candy for a few minutes and then I felt better. Is it possible that my body reacted that way because it's not used to being that low? Oh, and I also got back to exercise yesterday and did about 40 minutes on the treadmill and elliptical. I know that exercise effects the BS too. I would like to get my BS back to normal ranges with diet and exercise, rather than changing or increasing my meds.

Well, Carol, I have only been at this for a year. Here is my experience, though:

I tend to get "symptoms" when my bs is swinging. Either up or down dramatically. I generally never test over 105, even after meals unless I eat something that will send me up, I am sick, or excercising. I think the whole idea is to try to stop the swings either way. BTW, I find the actual LOW feelings to be much more pronounced than the other shakes, etc. Something interesting, from my dr, is that folks like us who have been "medicating" with food for a long time - expecially high carb/sugar stuff, actually get to "Jonesing" for carbs. This is the experience of other kinds of addicts who are stopping - their body creates anxiety symptoms to get them to indulge again. Just a thought, but anxiety symptoms feel like bs symptoms. Hang in there.

JingerBird
09-15-2011, 03:56 PM
Bonnie. You must be so pleased that your bs is coming down I know I get normal readings after I exercise. They slowly go back up though. Even 10% weight loss has a great effect on bs.

Carol. I often feel funny when my bs swing. I was told that if your bs starts to get low, sugar is dumped into blood to use for energy. Us diabectes can't control our sugar so rather than it being continuous like non diabetics, we end up with lots. That's what makes me feel funny. Hope that makes sense and I'm not waffling too much. I find that I have to eat often especially when exercising. That stops the big drops and then big rises.

Rie. Hope you feel better soon. I couldn't even think about exercise when I'm not feeling well.

Ruth. Glad you're starting to sort things out. I might try a glass of wine at the weekend but the calories in wine worry me a bit and if I started with a glass I will probably finish the bottle.

40 mins on the cross trainer tonight back up to normal time shoulder seems to be getting better. Pretty bad day though overall. Why is it when work had been crap, the family act up when you get home? Maybe it's just me. Can't wait for bedtime X

I get symptoms of lows too when I am dropping quickly. Usually after something that raises my sugar dramatically and it is falling dramatically, if I test several times over the hour or two, you can see it falling fast.
Just a hello, am reading everything and and so happy, to see good things happening for folks. Butterfly, I am thrilled to see the weight loss and sugars stabilizing. good for you!

Thank you all for the replies. It sounds as though I went from over eating carbs to strictly limiting them, causing my BS to drop too quickly. I probably should have had a small amount of carb with each meal to bring the bs down gradually. This morning I ate 1/2 piece of toast with my egg beaters, so that should help.

Rie, I am amazed at how controlled your BS is. I would be happy to ever have a reading of 105, even in the AM.

Hello All!

Well, I am late posting today. I just had stuff going on all day and didn't get here. Actually, my laptop was apparently on 3fc all afternoon - apparently I logged in and left :D

Today I took my mom to the movies to see "The Help". What a great movie and she sure enjoyed it. I ate popcorn one lovely kernel at a time and sure enjoyed myself. I think it is ok, I saved calories and carbs for the occasion.;) She and little guy wanted to go to Wendy's for lunch and I just don't like their carby salads so I had a grilled chicken breast sandwich. Mom laughed at me because I at the chicken, lettuce, tomato with a knife and fork and left the bun. Little gs must think it is normal because as I was laying out his meal, he handed me the fork.... LOL

Tomorrow I am going to get up early and hit the farmer's market and then I will work out later in the day. I hope to find some small zuchini and maybe some fall squash. We only have a couple weeks left before the market closes for the year. It only operates on Saturday mornings.

Bonnie it sounds like you had a good and productive day. I am enjoying the fact that it seems that you are feeling more confident all the time. You are doing so well!

Carol, I think it is so important to pair a little protein with the carbs. I find it keeps me so much more stable and it keeps me full.

Fatmad, rest well! Hopefully your all nighter led to happy healthy babies and moms.

Jinger, I hear you on the family. It is like some psychic energy that walks in the door with you... Even the 4yr old gs does that and I know that he doesn't actually KNOW when I've had a bad day. Hang in there

Ruth, I am glad that things are stable for you.

BB Tomorrow or maybe later.

Rie I now this may sound corney but I feel alot stronger. When I walk I fell like I have grown a few feet and my pace is alot better then what it was when I first started when I get to the end of one mile I would dread the walk back but now I get to the end of my 2nd mile and think oh my I am done I could do a lot more. Jest don't want to start my hip hurting again.

I am sure she will like what I have done so far. jest loosing the first 10 pounds the other doc in their was estatic and said to keep it up if I could loose 40 pounds this year and 40 next year I could come off all meds.

Speaking of meds it is time I have my evening snack and I have to take my metformin. She told me to take it between 8 and 9 and then have my snack so I eat half of snack and then take it and then eat the other half and it has worked well for me.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend we are getting some cool weather this week end so we are gonna take advantage of it...

It's sounds as though we are all achieving right now. It's great that we can learn from the experiences of others. I am starting to become proud of who I am and I know that I can get to my biggest goal - not taking the meds anymore.

I have an important announcement. From Monday I will not longer be a smoker! I have smoked since I was 18 but I think I have the strength to put it behind me now. I know it's not going to be easy but my Florida holiday is the best incentive ever. I picture myself on front of the castle wearing, to quote th song " daisy dukes, bikini's on top", wearing a cowboy hat and without cigarettes. A bit ridiculous for a woman of 40 but I already have the cowboy hat.

Wish me luck guys, I'm gonna need it. X

Jinger, I quit smoking in 1993 and haven't had a cig since. It was not the first time I tried, but DH and I quit together and it made it easier. Neither one of us was going to be the one who caved! LOL Did I want a cigarette? You're darn right I did! But each time I craved a cigarette I stopped and said "No!" and eventually, the craving passed. Actually, it's easier than losing weight because you don't NEED cigarettes. But you can't just quit eating. Good luck to you!

Bonnie, that is so sad. By the way, I am most impressed with your progress. Go, Girl!

Jinger, quitting smoking is one of the very best things you can do for your health. I don't wish you luck but strength and determination.

My ticker is in time-out. I have the BGL under control but weight has crept up to 181. Too much socializing, I guess, and I need to get a grip. I even caught myself eating a cookie last night at an event and a friend remarked she'd never seen me eat a cookie!

I just turned down an invitation to breakfast at the Diner with a pal and have settled for a shake here at home. Cocoa, milk, Fiber 1, an egg and sf hazelnut syrup really doesn't taste as good as sausages, eggs and home fries but ...

 and Happy Weekend to the rest of us. We're winning!

Hello All!

Fbs at 79 this morning. I rose early to get me, gs and mom off to the farmers market. I bought zuchini, butternut squash, fresh beets and fresh green beans. I picked up prescriptions and ran a couple other errands. I came home and worked out for an hour and 15 minutes. The rest of the day I am planning to relax.

Bonnie, I don't think your description is corney at all! It is lovely and so true. I feel more powerful every day as I work out. Sorry about your young friend.

Ruth, good job on the healthy smoothie for breakfast. I think the eggs and sausage sounds better too!

Carol, I cant have the salad because I am alergic to pecans and walnuts. I didn't know that you could get the salads made to order - I thought they were pre-made.

Jinger, I am so proud of you for quitting smoking. It is a hard task that gets easier as time goes by. I quit with chantix two years ago. Think about getting some help if you need it. In the end, I felt like smoking was a kind of slavery - I had to always get somewhere so I could smoke. It is so much more comfortable to travel, etc now that I don't have to smoke! I hope you get there.

Thank you all for your support for quitting smoking. It starts now. I've run out and I'm not buying anymore. Partner (Gary) is stopping too but I think its more that I will pester him until he stops too. Florida here we come.

Bonnie so sad to hear your news. Sending you and your family my love.

Ruth good Job on the smoothie for breakfast. I have a protein shake every morning. I could never stomach food first thing but I have found shakes great and the extra protein keeps me full until lunch. I have been a bit naughty this weekend. I had a Chinese take away last night. Have to say I have suffered today with stomach ache. Back on track today. Lots of steamed veggies for tea.

Rie the farmers Market sounds great. We don't have anything like that here. Just have to shop in the supermarket.

Love to ya all X

Hey everyone, once again just a quick hello, busy working weekend for me, but doing ok. Sugars are pretty good considering odd hours and irregular sleep. I haven't done a fasting, (hoping for tomorrow) as I have not had a long steady stretch of sleep do it. Happy to read everyone's posts.
DD was here for a couple of days, good visit, I was busy a lot, so we didn't see as much of each other as I might have liked. Seems like she is doing fine in her residence set up, and has found tutors for her difficult classes, as the profs have difficult accents and don't speak english so well. She is eating well, determined to avoid the freshmen 15.
have a happy sunday everyone!

Happy Sunday!

I woke early today with an fbs of 102? weird! I ate half a protein bar then went on a walk for a little over 3 miles. I walked a new route that included a space on a local highway. 3 people stopped and asked me if I needed a ride. I guess I didn't look like I was working out! :D But, that is Montana. LOL

I ate two eggs when I got back and I am plannng a light lunch. Today is football day in our house so I am careful with what I eat during the day. I have a busy week ahead of me with a state licensing audit and then a trip midweek. I hope to stay on track eating wise.

Fatmad, where is dd attending college? Do they speak French?

Jinger, we are all there with you on the smoking thing. Did you lay in a supply of sf gum and candy? It might help. Actually, we are lucky here with the farmers market and also the huterite colonies pull into town and set up produce trucks all the time. Our eggs (even from Sams club) are produced by them locally. It is nice. I am going to prepare and portion the beets that I bought today cuz ds doesn't like them and probably won't cook them. They are so good fresh!

Bonnie, I was thinking of you as I walked my way along this morning. It is amazing how good it feels.... My knee hurts now but it is worth it.

Carol, hows your bs doing?

Busy week ahead with lots of "no fun" stuff to be done. I'll try to not self-medicate with food!

BGL has been pretty darn good lately with 4 to 5 fasting readings. I'm trying hard to not only plan my meals but actually eat them! last night was our monthly "girls & kids" dinner with spaghetti on the menu. I took my own container of spaghetti squash which worked out fine. The dessert was a yummy-looking peach cobbler but I resisted. The scale was back down a half pound this morning. I'll re-instate my ticker when she behaves!

Happy and Healthy Monday!

Carol, I cant have the salad because I am alergic to pecans and walnuts. I didn't know that you could get the salads made to order - I thought they were pre-made.

Rie

Rie, The first time I ordered that salad I asked if I could get it without blue cheese and they said yes. The second time I forgot to say "no blue cheese" so I just picked most of it out. I can eat it, I just prefer not to. A little bit is OK. The pecans are not in the salad. They give them to you in a little plastic bag and you put them on yourself. So you could just tell them you don't want them or just throw them away. The apples and cranberries are already in the salad. You can also order a half salad if you're not sure if you will like it. I usually don't like anything except plain old salad but I like this one. I wonder about how much of the salad is made ahead. Unless the apples are treated with something, they would turn brown if they are cut ahead of time.

Good Morning All

fbs at 89 this morning. That is a nice comfortable range that allows me to workout before I eat. I was 45 minutes into my 60 minute workout when I heard a little voice behind me saying, "gma I'm sick.... then blech" Boy, that'll bring you to attention in a hurry! DS was in the shower so there I was. Guess the little guy isn't going to school today.

Bonnie, I am sorry that you had a hard day yesterday. Of course, this is all about a lifestyle change and there will always be days where we are not perfect. That's life.

Ruth, oh, I love peach cobbler. Yesterday I was at mom's and she had a lovely lattice style peach pie that she offered my twice. Oh, it was hard to turn down. Yay for us.

Jinger, Good job on day one! :carrot:

Today starts the secure detention licensing audit. 480 regulations.... ugh. It should be ok but it is just stressful. I also have my big board meeting tomorrow and a business trip on wednesday to help with licensing another faciity. Wow.

My fbs is still high, but it's better through out the day. Yesterday I tested between lunch and dinner and I was 101. Haven't had that for months. But we were leaving and had a 1-1/2 hour drive to where we were having dinner, so I grabbed a couple crackers with PB and ate them. I know the choice could have been better, but DH was already in the car waiting and I didn't want to have problems on the road. I am cutting back on carbs, but trying to include a little bit at each meal. I'll get there!

Carol: You only had a couple of crackers. PB was a good choice it's low GI.

Rie: Hope your little one is feeling better today!

I ate 4 cookies yesterday. I'm ok as long as can plan in advance but last night was a bit rushed, I was late home from work. The cookies were gone before I'd even realised what a had done. Hello!

fbs at 77 this morning which is ok because I have an early meeting and don't work out today. I ate sparingly because I have a barbque at work and then I am going to Red Lobster with the licensing guy. I know that I am going to have the unlimited shrimp. :D I will watch the carbs, right?

I guess I forgot to tell you guys about the licensing audit. This state inspector comes in at least once per year and does an audit of everything. 480+ regulations and we must be almost perfect or we might not get our license. We always do well but it is stressful.

Jinger, it is amazing because you will realize, "oh my, I haven't smoked for a month, a year, ....) Good job! I don't think the crackers were too bad and peanut butter has become one of my staples. I bought one of those apple slicer/core things that you can just slide through the apple. It is just as fast as grabbing other carbs and two or three slices really slow me down when I am starving without a spike. Anyway, progress, not perfection

Bonnie, good job on watp. For what it is worth, if you want to resist the cake because that would be a victory for you, then you go girl. However, I personally would eat the cake and factor it into my day. Of course, I don't really like frosting so I often eat a little of the cake without the frosting, not too many carbs/calories. Anyway, whatever you choose, I am on your side!

Carol, thanks for the tips on the salad. I always worried mostly about the nuts but if they are prepackaged, I could eat them.

Well, I have to run. Ruth, Fatmad, and anyone that I missed.... Have a great day:carrot:

Checking in. Weight is finally back down to 180 but my ticker is still in Coventry.

BGL has been fine in the mornings - now I have to convince myself that it's fine. I got pretty accustomed to 2 and 3 being the "normal". I bet my HA1C test will be back up above 6.5 next time though. :(

Lots of fresh veggies abound around here these days and my kitchen seems to be always messy. Right now I have 14 red, green and yellow peppers to tackle for winter stir-fries. I think I'll freeze strips on a tray and then freeze mixes colours in one serving baggies.

Hugs to it all - "Some days it ain't easy" as my cleaning lady says.

Rie, yes travel is "broadening". ;) Back in the day when I had to work for a living, I did it a lot and think that contributed to my weight gain. Enjoy the comedy show tonight.

Too much food and wine going on around here this weekend. I've decided I'm taking a fruit salad to the pot luck tonight instead of my famous apple crumble pie. I'll jazz up the salad with diet gingerale, rum and coconut extract and maybe fresh coconut on top. I'll handle the Local Flavours Food Fair tomorrow by being the designated driver.

Hello Everyone!

I have had a great 24 hours! I made my goal of under 15 minutes/mile. I was pleased with that because the course was tough. It started with a long (3/4 mile walk up hill then settled into smaller inclines and little hills. There was also some rough terrain and I am used to walking on the road. I walked with my Aunt. It was so fun to finish! The event was called "Run like a Girl for health". Tee Hee. I never would have thought that I would ever do anything like that.

The comedy night was great although I ate a lot of sugary stuff :( My bs was only 115 when I came home, though, so it was ok. It was so much fun to listen to this female comic about the foibles of being women/mothers/wives/daughters - and to be in a room of all women. It was so cool because the young women and the grandmas were laughing about the same things. In my life I think I have often neglected the company of women - maybe that is something that I will work to change.

I realized last night that my dr office was a primary sponsor of the event. My diabetes educator, dietician and others were working there doing free screenings, etc. They were also passing through the expo with healthy treats. I like their commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Sorry for going on and on, it was just a cool experience.

Ruth, how are you doing with your weekend? The fruit salad sounds terrific. I look forward to hearing about the local flavours event.

Bonnie, I want to go look up the sleek WATP. I don't have that one! You are doing so good. Really an inspiration.

Carol, have you read about the "dawn effect" I think it is also called the somogi effect? It is on the diabetes sites. Interesting concepts. Just wondering... have you ever tested in the middle of the night - like 3am?

Jinger - you notsmoking wonder you... LOL Good job, hang in there. It is natural for some other things to slip a little while you are adjusting to not smoking.

Everyone else, I'm off to eat supper with ds and dgs. Have a lovely evening!

Well, I haven't been around because I've been doing terrible with the eating. I've been under so much stress with the kids here. It got better for a while, but doesn't always last. Not the kids so much as it is the parents. The stress and the eating caused me to have a high FBS of 180's twice this past week. I finally blew off steam with DH one day and I guess one of the grandaughters heard me and they took it as we didn't want them here. I was heard making the statement that "we don't every have any time alone". Which I admitted to. I couldn't understand why they could leave the children on us and have their time alone. Any way they are starting to give us some time. I realize some things aren't going to change and I am not going to let it get to me. I sure can't let it hurt my health.

I'm starting over going back on low carb. I don't think my body is going to let me eat any other way. Making my starting weight todays weight. My beautician has become a very good friend and we have decided to get together sometime and have coffee or get with some of the other beauticians and go to a movie. Just got to have a life. I love kids, but I babysat for 34 years mostly as my own business and I told DH that if I do this 24/7 that I will begin to resent it because it will become a job and not something I can enjoy. Strange thing the 17 yr old grandson let off steam today with me. He fills the same way I do about everything since he seems to be the one who does everything for his family except for when I do it to take the load off of him. Poor kid is trying to keep grades up to get a scholarship to college. O well, that is enough of venting.

As I said, I'm back on track as of today. Got my food and my plan. I also plan to start my exercising again on Oct 3rd when DD starts nursing school. Going to start doing the 1 mile walk away the pounds 3 days a week.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!!!

Good morning! I've not been sleeping well. I have been late getting to bed but still wake around five. Grrr! Weight is up a bit this morning. Could it be from mindlessly munching through a bag of goldfish crackers yesterday? Ya think? Two foodie evenings in a row may have helped.

I have a Food Fair this afternoon where I will be doing a walkabout telling people about the Mill's stone ground flour. I will be able to avoid the free food and wine samples, I hope!

Dinner tonight in my own house with my own food and veggies! :cheer:

Hello Everyone!

Carol, have you read about the "dawn effect" I think it is also called the somogi effect? It is on the diabetes sites. Interesting concepts. Just wondering... have you ever tested in the middle of the night - like 3am?

Rie

Yes, I have read about that extensively because I have had this problem before. Web MD has an article that makes the most sense to me. The dawn phenomenon is caused by hormones that causes your body to release glucose into the blood stream as morning approaches. Someone once told me that was because your body senses that it's time to get up and you need glucose for energy.

The Somogi Effect is caused when you experience a low during the night and your body releases glucose to conteract it.

I wake up often during the night and have checked my BS and I'm never low, so I would say my case is the dawn phenomenon. Unfortunately, they listed ways to counteract it and they all applied to insulin. I am not on insulin. I have been experimenting with my food selections in the evening and this morning I was only 128, so it is improving.

Here is the article. It explains it in a way that I understand a little more than before.

Good Morning

fbs up a little at 91 this morning. I think I ate too many strawberries last night. I need to be really careful about fruit. I am pretty sore this morning but I am going to try to get a workout in.

Ruth, isn't it a comfort to be home and in control of the menu? Works for me.

Carol, I struggled a lot with those high mornings. Hopefully you will continue to have success in controlling that.

Hi Bonnie! I hope you have a good day!

Jinger, hang in there :carrot: BBL

I'm just full of questions lately, but I seem to get reliable answers on this board.

What can you tell me about Chromium Picolinate? Does it really help regulate blood sugar or is that all hype? I don't want to waste my money or take something that could be harmful, and I know you can't always believe what you read in the ads.

Carol I also have highs in the morning. I try and eat something before I go to bed, normally soya milk with cocoa and sweetener it helps. I also take chromium it doesn't really help bring my sugars down but it helps to keep them stable. Cinnamon is also good for that too.

Ruth research suggests that not sleeping well can cause havoc with your levels, especially if you have less than 6 hours sleep. Have you tried a meditation/ relaxation tape etc? It helps me when I can't sleep but I also listen to audio books normally Harry Potter. It always helps me.

Bonnie girl you rock. When I can't be bothered exercising, I think of you and feel motivated. Thanx

Rie congrats it seems like you have had a fantastic couple of days

Trish hang on in there venting is a great way to sort things out in your head

Still not smoking day 7 easier than I thought it would be. I haven't lost any more weight but 4 inches from my waist gone.

Carol - I've been having high FBS this past week. 2 of the highs were 183 and 182, but it has started steadily coming back down since I started watching the carbs. I'm sure the stress doesn't help... DH FBS has been high too. Not as high as mine, but he is on diabetic meds not Metformin. At the present time, I only allow myself starchy type carbs one time a day similar to the old Carbohydrate Addict's Diet. However, I've decided that if I have to give up those carbs, I will do it. I also eat something before I go to bed. I think it is helping. One thing I do is check my FBS later in the day either 2 hrs later or just before lunch. I did that when I had the 182 reading last week and just before lunch it was 130 so that was good. I'm not sure and have never asked my doc, but I read somewhere that a doctor told his diabetic patient that the FBS wasn't as important as the ones later in the day. According to that persons doc, the numbers should not be high later in the day.

JingerBird & Ruth - I forgot about the importance of sleep, but I'm not sure I get 6 hours sleep. I'll have to check on that.

slmn11 - I take Chromium Picolinate and I think it helps me. My doc knows I take it and he didn't advise me not to. I know it has helped me in the past so I expect it works to keep my FBS from being higher than it is.

Rie - Glad you are back home safe from your trip. It is always good to get back home.

Thanks to y'all for letting me vent. I won't make a habit of it. I'm learning to speak up when it has to do with things that are important and I try to just let the rest go. I've decided that it isn't worth my health and I'm not going to let it steal my peace.

It is really great to be back here. I've missed y'all. I had just stay away until I got my act together and decided to get serious about controlling my bs. I'm ready to do it and I'm OP and on my way now.

Fatmad, Bonnie and others I missed

Y'all have a great OP day.

Happy Monday. Once again my start of the week resolution is to get control of my crazy life! I'm retired but I may have to treat retirement like a job. Too bad I no longer have my great secretary!

Slept fine last night night and woke at 6:45 with only one potty break. I have no trouble falling asleep - just wee small hours problems. I sometimes use lavender oil on my pillow to soothe me back. I had eight hours last night which is great.

However, too many transgressions have been sneaking in and my weight is back to 183 this morning. I'm pretty sure some of it is water weight as I know I didn't eat and extra 10,500 calories over the weekend but ... FBGL has been a bit high the past week so I put back a glyburide and got a 3.8 this morning after a fairly carby supper.

I am going to plan all my meals for the week which may get me back on track and will, at least, take away some of the stress of a busy week.

On we go.

Good morning all!

fbs at 84 this morning and I got in 75 minutes of Walkitout and 11,500 steps. I am more than half way to earning my presidential fitness award.:)

Ruth, planning your meals for the week definitely sounds like a stress reducer. glad that you got some sleep last night.

Trish, come here and vent anytime that you want to! I hope that things get back on track for you and dh soon. BTW, feel free to PM me anytime if you want to talk about some of the multi-generation struggles. My ds and gds have been living with me almost 2 years, now so I understand what you are going through.

Jinger, glad to hear that you are hanging in there!

Carol, I know that there is some research that cinnamon with chromium is good for bs control. My dad's dr recommended it. It gave me heartburn at first but I got used to it. It is relatively inexpensive at sams or walmart.... And, questions on this board have really helped me.... ask away!

Have a good day!

Rie - Thanks for the PM offer. I'll remember that if I need to. DD, DH and I sat down and talked this afternoon. We pretty much made clear what we expect and what we are willing to do. I told her that I don't want to have to discipline the kids all the time other than when I am taking care of them when they are not here. I told her that I have taken care of somebodies kids since I was 12 years old. I had a child care business of my own for years and I don't want to do that any more. I want to enoy being a Grandmother. I also told her that I thought we were going to be a family and do family things together especially holidays. DH told her that he knew she didn't believe him but that we don't have a lot of money, but we are willing to help them as much as we can which isn't a whole lot. She thought they were in the way and we wanted to be left alone. Hopefully we have come to an understanding.

Ruthie - I've learned that I have to plan my food daily. I never had to do that before, but seems that I do now:dizzy: or I will forget what I had planned and then I eat off. I'm thinking about asking my doctor to give me a prescription for glyberide or something like that even though I am on Metformin. I don't want to get off the Metformin.

Jingerbird - Oh don't mention Cristmas. I am so NOT ready for that one.

Fatmad, Bonnie and everyone else

Y'all have a great evening. Catch yall tomorrow!!!

Sorry to be MIA for a week, I will go back and read some posts to catch up.
Thanks for the hellos. :D

I was really busy with work, and got overtired, but didn't over eat. I did do some extra carbs one night, it really wasn't practical to eat on plan, but I avoided overdoing it. Had a lovely weekend off that included lots of walks, and yoga, so exercise was good.

Slept pretty well, and sugars are doing fine. On the personal note, DD2 is enjoying being in residence and school, and DH and I are enjoying being empty nesters. DD1 just got a permanent full time job. (she was working full time, but was in a temporary full time position, filling a mat-leave until now).
so things are going well overall. Won't stay long, need to sleep some more.

Christmas!!! Wash your mouth! I am still in shock knowing that Canadian Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away!

Planning meals stood me in good stead yesterday as I had forgotten a 7 PM meeting but had taken something out of the stash to thaw. Although the meeting was a tad stressful, I was able to come home afterward and get to bed without lying there awake for ages. A good night of sleep makes all the difference.

Weight was down a pound and BGL was 3.8 this morning.

Ruth - I have had trouble sleeping for years. I fall asleep in a matter of minutes, but I wake up a couple hours later and many times I can't fall back to sleep at all. It is a little better now that I'm retired. I can fall back to sleep because I know the alarm clock isn't going to wake me back up again. I don't want to take pills for it. I take enough pills now.

Catholic Cajun - Good for you with the 106! I would be thrilled to get that reading.

Rie - I bought the Chromium and will try it out. Should I take it with food, and at AM or PM? I used to take cinnamon capsules for triglycerides but they didn't help so I stopped. Maybe I will start taking them again for glucose control.

Right now I have a terrible cold with a lot of chest congestion. I hope the congestion doesn't lead to pneumonia again. That was one terrible issue. I rubbed Vicks on my chest last night and that helped me sleep, but it didn't do anything to loosen up the congestion.

Jinger, I have tried eating something before bed but that doesn't change anything. It seems to mostly deal with the starchy carbs at dinner.

I don't listen to meditations tapes, but both DH and I use pillow speakers and leave the talk radio station on all night. I listen to that if I wake up and I think it's the drone of the voices that puts me back to sleep. The bad thing is if they are talking about something that interests me, I fight to stay awake to listen. LOL

Good Morning all!

I had a rare 8 hours of sleep last night. Lovely. Fbs is the usual at 84. I have just finished my apple/peanut butter breakfast. I have a busy day at work today but nothing too stressful.

Fatmad, nice to hear from you. Glad that your DD's are doing so well. I tried a yoga video a couple times over the weekend. I think it helped me with the soreness from the race.

Carol, hopefully your cold will get better and not worsen in your chest. Lots of fluids dear.

Ruth, insomnia is such a long term problem for me. My dr worried for a while about the effect on my health/sugars. It seems to have stabilized a little but I typically only get 6 - 7 hours per night. I think I am getting used to it.

Hi Cajun! I'll bet you are really busy these days. My mom worked retail for years and so I know how busy Christmas is in the business. Stop by whenever you have a minute and don't worry about personals.

Trish, I am glad that you sat down and had a good talk - and that you made your needs clear. Ds and I spent a lot of time in those conversations during the first year. Keep at it, it is important for you, the kids, and the grandkids.

Bonnie, Hi! How ya doing? I was thinking about you yesterday..... I got nasty weed seed pods stuck in my pants on my walk the other day. Did your neighbor get the path mowed for your walks?

Well, off to face the day.... Later

Rie What kind of apples do you eat? I only like delicious and they are the ones with the highest sugar. Maybe I could eat a different kind if it had peanut butter on it. Just don't say "grannie smith". Way too tart for me! I am looking for something different to have for breakfast. Do you eat the whole apple? Does it keep your hunger at bay? How long before you eat something else?

Hello Everybody. Had a great evening with the kids last night. So nice to enjoy family time together. A funny thing this morning. When I came into the kitchen this morning, GS asked me if the red pen a note was written with was mine or his Mother's. I told him I thought it must be his Mother's. Later when I read it, I said "Oh, this is Grandad's handwriting. This note is from him." You should have seen the shock on their faces... it was worth millions. Youngest GD said, "He wrote one and left it in the bathroom too". I said "Really"? She said, "Yes, he wrote out steps on how to clean the bathroom". I read the note in the bathroom. It tells them how he expects them to keep the bathroom clean everyday. :carrot:Yea!!! for DH.

Carol - I don't know if there is a right or wrong time to take the Chromium. I just take it with my other vitamins. Hope you get over your cold soon.

Rie - I've seen you mention eating an apple and peanut butter for breakfast before. Today it sounds good. I may try that for a change. I do enjoy eggs especially omlets, but I do get tired of them and would like a change from time to time.

CC and Fatmad - Good to have you back. Check in when you have time.

Ruthie - I can't always sleep 8 hours either. Once in a while, I need the 8, but I usually wake up after 6 or 7. I read or heard recently that we need at least 6 or 7 so I guess we are doing okay if we get that.

Bonnie - I missed you yesterday. Hope everything is going well for you.

Well, I had to carby foods yesterday instead of just the one, but overall it was a good day. DD cooked couscous and gave me some to see if I liked it which I did. Then I didn't eat my before bed snack which may not have been a good idea as my FBS was up. However, the weight was ok.

Hope I didn't miss anyone in the Indies.

Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Ate well today, but feel crummy tonight. DH was kind enough to pick up a microwave supper I liked last week, (butter chicken) and I had that with green beans for supper. I don't know if I had an allergic reaction last week, but had a very bad one tonight, with bad hives and some breathing problems, so had to inject with epinephrine and benedryl. Leaves a person feeling horrid.
Feel bad for him too, as he was being good and thinking of something within plan for me. Its not his fault. I had a bit last week and don't recall a problem, and the ingredient list is very small, hard to read print. THere it was, lemon juice, at the very end of the list. ack.
I have not only been eating properly, but exercised again today.
Thanks for posting everyone, I am enjoying reading.

Hello all!

I usually don't post in the evenings but I saw the posts today and thought I would respond.

I eat the whole apple for breakfast. I have one of those apple slicer/corer things and it works great. I buy the apples by the bag full, usually 7 - 10 apples. This week I am eating cala apples. They are crisp and semi sweet. I do like granny smiths sometimes for a change. I rarely eat delicious apples anymore. If I pair it with protein, it doesn't increase my bs. I have a 1 1/2 tbs measure and I use it for the peanut butter. I often add 1 oz of cream cheese or a piece of string cheese. I eat eggs on weekends and I often pair with berries instead of toast.

I usually eat my breakfast after working out, about 8 am. I eat lunch at noon. It holds me. Actually, excercise is an appetite supressant for me.

See you in the morning for personals.

My goal lately has been to attempt more of a balanced diet and include fruit.

Good Morning Everybody,

I'm usually don't write in the mornings any more, but I was up washing my hair at 3:35 this morning and planned to dry and go back to bed. Ended up getting up around 5 am because I never could go back to sleep. Just one of those nights. FBS was up but I'm sure that was due to so little sleep although I slept really good for about 5 hrs. Just couldn't get to the 6 hrs this morning. I don't take the Melatonin any more because it makes me so draggy the next day and don't need to feel that way taking care of the baby.

Decided to go ahead and count the calories even if I do the low carb. I think I need to learn more self-control. Also the low calorie site on 3fc has some really great recipe ideas that I plan to do. Since I seem to be ready for a new beginning with this (I think I've got my head on straight/act together), I think keeping up with the calories is a good place to start to learn portions as well. I remember one time my sister lost weight on Slimfast and ate WW frozen dinners. When she gained the weight back, she said the problem was that she didn't learn portion control. Been doing a few exercises but not in routine yet. I plan to get in the swing of that next week when everyone will be gone but the baby and me. Hubby will be sleeping. I'll have my living room back to myself on school days to do them. I've got my plan and my goal set and hopefully I'm committed and as they say... NOW JUST DO IT. Thank y'all so much for being here and being so patient with me.

Rie - Thanks for sharing about the apples. I love gala apples which are actually the only apple that I really like. I like one with string cheese, but one with peanut butter would be great. I also like almond butter and think it would be good with that as well.

Fatmad - Sorry your food didn't work out to be a good thing for you. Hope your DH didn't feel bad especially since he was trying to help you out. Hope you are feeling better today.

Well, everyone is up now. DD has left to take her DD to school and the others are getting ready to leave.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good Morning!

I went to bed last night with a reading of 74 and woke this morning at 90. Ok, but still looking for balance....

Last night DS was off and he cooked us a lovely dinner of grilled lamb chops, baby portabellas, artichoke hearts, and sweet pepper strips all cooked on the barbque. I also had a very small portion of brown/wild rice mix. Bless him.

Trish, I think that calorie counting is a good idea to get a handle on portion control. It also puts you in a position to use lots of leafy, non carb veggies to fill you up - a habit that will stay with you in the long haul. And we require no patience to be here with you. You have been facing some challenges and this is the place to bring them.

Fatmad, I am sorry about your dinner! Your poor DH! Here he was trying to do something nice and it backfired. I hope that you are feeling better!

Ruth, hows it going this week? I hope you are well.

Bonnie, hope that you are ok, and that it is not something troublesome that is keeping you away.

Carol, see you on the other site!

Everyone have a great day!

PattyGirl It sounds like you are getting on track. I count calories but pay most attention to carbs. I tend to only count fats, proteins and carbs. Unfortunately it also curbs my enthusiasm for cooking and I'm inclined to decide cheese, crackers and fruit is a "good" supper! NOT!!! I need to stick to my planned menu, like it or not. Who ever thought I'd be forcing myself to eat?

Sorry I never seem to get around to "indies" but MOD and ADMIN duties keep me pretty busy and I can't just live inside the Net. Just wanted to say that this is a great and supportive group. I wish we could all sit down together and have coffee in real life!

Be well.

Good Moring Everyone,

Going to try to check in here each morning to help keep me accountable and on track.

Had a great "busy" OP day yesterday. No real exercise except that I did walk around Wally World for about an hour buying a few groceries. I've decided to go lowfat/lowcalories so needed some foods to do that. Going to eat more "whole foods" type of foods. I thoroughly enjoyed eating some of the foods I like only more lf/lc. Another busy day.

Ruthie - You were missed. Glad the readings are good. Mine are starting to come down again. If I can't get my numbers down where I want them with diet and Metformin, I might talk to doc about giving me a diabetic med that can be used with Metformin. Combined meds seemed to have worked for you didn't it?

Bonnie - Love your new picture. You look great girl. You go!!!

JingerBird - I thought about not counting veggies and fruit because Weight Watchers doesn't, but I'm afraid that if you give me an inch that I'll take a mile. Although I do believe there are some veggies that are like eating no calories at all. Still might try that when I think I can trust me.

Fatmad - Glad you are feeling better.

Slmn. CC and everyone else:wave:

Have a nice day!!!

Hubby and I's glucose levels are better, still need to improve as is always the case, but much better than they used to be. Eating is better too. Need to walk more! Wish the cool weather would start and we would not have to walk in temps. in the 80's and the humidity even higher than the temps! I hope you all have a blessed day.

Good Morning All!

fbs at 87 this morning. I rested well but I feel a little tired. My back is twanging at me really bad this morning so I will work out later today. I have a new chiropractic consult later this afternoon.

Bonnie, I love your new picture! It is great! When you have time, you should change the weight under your sigature to match your ticker. You don't weigh that much any more, darlin! And LOL on the underwear..... It is a sure sign of progress.

Cajun, nice to see you here and glad that you and hubby are getting healthier.

Ruth, we all appreciate your work as an admin. Just check in and let us know how you are doing.

Fatmad, so sorry about dh friend but I am glad that you encouraged him to go. That is a decision that will not be regretted in the future.

Trish, sounds like a good plan to check in every morning. It sure helps me. My dietician helped me develop a list of "free" veggies. Examples are :green beans, leafy lettuce type veggies, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumbers. I used these to fill me up without many calories and carbs. Low fat is good but just watch out for the carbs because they often add sugar for taste. Good job!

Jinger, I agree with you. I never would have thought that I would get to enjoy the excercise.

Be Back Later!

Last day of September and I don't feel I've made any progress this month with weightloss although BGL has been pretty stable. 178 Sept. 1 and 178 Sept. 30! I AM confident that more will come off. Right now I'm working on weight I gained in 1985 when we bought this house in the country and I started to eat and cook like we were running a farm! My theory is that "old" weight is harder to ditch since it has more old roots.

Another "challenging" weekend ahead as I will in Ottawa Saturday and Sunday with Shirleyanne the food pusher. I will be strong and am taking some of my own food along.

By the way, Tomorrow is October 1 so we will need a new chat thread. Anybody can start it if I'm not in here early enough.

TGIF to us all and Good=Bye September.

Good Morning all!

fbs at 81 this morning. My back is seriously killing me! Yesterday I had an evaluation with a chiropractor. I signed up for it during a health weekend. IDK, it was weird..... The area of my back that hurts was "not a concern" and lots of other areas are apparently a problem. He did all these weird scans. I am supposed to get the results and a proposed treatment plan on Monday. What are your experiences with chiropractic care?

Ruth, I like your theory about old weight. If that is the case, I am working on losing the pounds that I lost after my divorce. I dieted while in grad school in 1982, getting down to a size 8. I got divorced, in a highly stressful job, and ate my way up the scale. :( Lots of gourmet dinners with friends) and "Oh,no, I am fine! ..... Eat another cheeseburger" Ugh.

I can't believe that it is the last day in September! Pool season is starting and I need to get in some serious practice time. Have a great day, all, I will be back later.

I wholeheartedly agree about the old weight. Most of my weight was gained in 1992 after my youngest step child got married and moved out. We started eating out often. It was so nice to sit down to a meal I didn't have to cook. But choosing the wrong foods did me in. It just seems that that old weight has had more time to grab a hold! If I knew then what I know now.....

Hi Ladies so Last night I decided that I was gonna cut my grass . 2 Hrs later and about 4 blisters later I finished But it felt good for me to get it done. Didn't leep well last night was up and down all night. I woke up this morning and my 13 year old tells me that she is having bad stomach pains in her right side. She was pale as a ghost and didn't look good. So we rushed her to the ER. They couldn't find what was causing her pain she seems to be doing better right now. She wanted to go to school so bad but I couldn't let her go . So I am home now and got lots of stuff to get down so I will check back in with all you later..

Check it out almost to 30 pounds

Just a quick flyby as it has been a really busy day. My first day with the baby while Mommy went to orientation for classes to start Monday. This is also one of my wash days that I told everyone that I have to have, but still found clothes in the dryer. When I looked to get something clean to put on the baby, I couldn't find anything but dirty clothes so ended up washing and folding his clothes too. Now he is fed and in his bed playing and I hope he will go to sleep. His Mom will be home in about an hour or so.

Staying OP and I must say enjoying it. Heard a woman say she exercises all throughout the day. Seems to work for me too. I did about 20 minutes while dressing this morning and then doing lots of bending picking up toys and putting them away. When he gets just a little older I'm going to teach him to do that himself.

Ruthie - Good luck this weekend dealing with the foodpusher. Hope you are able to deal with her.

Rie - Hope your back feels better soon.

Slmn- I agree that those pounds we've had a long time seem to be more difficult to deal with. That is why I've always looked for an easy way to lose it, but realize that if I had stayed at something that it would be gone by now or at least most of it would be.

Bonnie - So sorry about your daughter. I hope she will be okay.

Y'all have a great Friday and weekend.

Hi everyone

Ruth my sister believes a similar theory. She has m.s which is in remission some of her symptoms remind her of injuries and illnesses she has had on the past that never healed properly. Now she is more healthy her body is repairing damage it missed earlier.

Bonnie hope your daughter feels better soon. Good job with the lawn.

Rie hope you get your back sorted soon. I have been to an Osteopath and he fixed my shoulder. Deep tissue massage and acupuncture made it much better.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. We have some really good weather just now so I am going to plan some outdoor activities before winter is here for real

Just a quick note to tell you about a recipe: Roasted butternut squash with maple. I cut it in half, cleaned out the seeds and baked it for about 30 minutes with the cut side down. I then cut it in chunks and put it in a baking dish. I drizzled with a little SF maple syrup and sprinkled with pumkin pie spice and baked for another 30 minutes. It got a little carmelized on the top. Oh wow - it tasted like pumkin pie. So good, I had trouble not having seconds. Very cheap, too, I spent only $2 on it at the farmers market. Just thought I would share
