100 lb. Club - What do you eat now that you never thought you'd like?

I'm sitting here eating cottage cheese on whole wheat crackers and I literally just said "mmmm" out loud.

And then I laughed because I NEVER liked cottage cheese before. I suppose it was an acquired taste for me? Who knows. Actually, thinking back on it, I'm not sure I'd had it more than once. The consistency freaked me out.

What foods have you tried (or forced on yourself) that you never thought you'd eat, let alone like?

I have hated all forms of sea food since I was little. Throughout my life, as I've gotten older, I've tried things over again just to give them a chance, but I never seemed to find a way to enjoy fish.

Suddenly, my dad (who has been cooking most of my dinners for when I'm done exercising with mom every night) has found recipes to test on us and I have been enjoying them so much that I actually look forward to fish nights now. He's been able to find creative recipes that make it taste delicious to me and I never thought I would call fish delicious.

This post brings to mind 'I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam-I-Am.' Dr Seuss wrote many a children's tale each with a moral. This is one of them. Humor me I have two small kids!
The one thing I never thought I would like has to be hard boiled eggs. Yuk! BUT I need the protein and found that adding some salt and pepper to my egg whites isn't so bad. I do like them now and actually look forward to having them.

Sabrina- I wish someone could get me to like fish! That's great though- it's sooo good for you.

Time- that's actually one of mine too! I used to scrunch my nose up at it but when I tried roasting it one time it was soooo good.

usam  yes, I can see the connection!

I actually prefer my salad without dressing now! And I like my baked potato chopped into chunks with either lemon juice or salsa. I used to go through a tub of margarine in a month or two. Now, I've had the same one for like a year!

Potato with salsa is fantastic, I love it . . . not much of a potato fan anymore though, who knew.

What I am loving that I never thought I would, Hummus.

Brussel sprouts and cauliflower. Now I love them, roasted brussels with olive oil and pancetta is heaven sent and cauliflower instead of or mixed with mash, in place of rice, in curries, it's just so versatile I love it!

Unsweetened Almond milk........never thought I'd be having it in my cereal, tea, protein shakes lol......it's yummy!

07-26-2011, 02:49 PM
egg whites!!!!!!!!!!

Plain greek yogurt with high fiber crackers. I also love plain yams...no need for marshmallows or butter! ;)

A big helping of plain raw veggies as the majority of my lunch. I never thought I could feel satisfied for a whole afternoon on that. It's so weird...

07-26-2011, 03:22 PM
yogurt, kale, hummus.

all of them used to be 'ick' and now i can't NOT have them in my fridge.

07-26-2011, 03:27 PM
Hummus!!!! Never liked it. I suppose I didn't dislike it but it was one of those items that I would NEVER eat, order, purchase. Now I eat it like 3X a week.

07-26-2011, 03:47 PM
bean sprouts & avacodo, love them on everything now.

07-26-2011, 04:24 PM
Loving my raw broccoli. I can't believe I just wrote that.

I had a ridiculous huge craving for a strawberry shake and fries from McDonalds last week when it was so hot, (I haven't had one since January.) Yuck. I really do not like McDonalds fries anymore, but I did manage to choke down the strawberry shake. lol

Salad. Never liked it. Still not in love with it, but I'm getting the idea.

07-26-2011, 05:57 PM
brussels sprouts (which I actually list as my favorite food now), non-white rices, dark chocolate instead of milk, broccoli that hasn't been drowned in "cheese" sauce, salad that is more salad than dressing, radishes

07-26-2011, 10:33 PM
Rice, I NEVER liked rice, something about the texture of it. Now however I eat alot of brown rice with meals:)

07-26-2011, 11:08 PM
Plain Greek Yogurt!

07-26-2011, 11:29 PM
Morningstar veggie burgers. Especially the Tomato & Basil Pizza Burger and the Spicy Black Bean Burger. I top them with a wedge of Laughing Cow Garlic & Herb cheese and it is just about one of the tastiest things I have ever eaten.

07-27-2011, 04:32 AM
^^ Ooo, yeah. When I first tried MorningStar veggie sausage I thought, really? I'm supposed to eat this?? Now I like it better than real sausage!

And I'm with Cathi888... I've caved a few times in the last year and gotten and burger or fries at a fast food joint and it NEVER tastes as good as I remember. I will indulge rarely at a nicer restaurant and get a burger or share fries... but my fast food issues are 99% cured. (I still love Jack-In-the-Box tacos though! And the chicken fajita pita!:D At around 320 cal for either it's doable -- as long as I'm not looking at the sodium!)

Whole wheat pasta! I hated it a couple years ago when my mom made it, now I crave the nutty flavor and the texture!

07-27-2011, 06:03 AM
Cauliflower, broccoli, avocado, arugula, meals that don't include animal protein...

Don't get me wrong, these are hardly like my favourite things in the universe but the gag reflex-OMG factor is gone and I actually CHOOSE to eat these things willingly and don't mind them at all.

07-27-2011, 04:56 PM
Since I never had a problem with what I ate - just with how much - I guess the thing I never thought I could eat was "less."

I used to hate any type os fish. I grew up eating smoked catfish, lutefisk (yes I live in Minnesota, and from a small town). I used to avoid fish like the plague. But my husband really likes fish and I tried some tallapia he made and amazingly enough it was yummy!! Another food I can add to my list of things I enjoy now.

Spaghetti Squash!!!

I hated all squash but now I LOVE my yummy Spaghetti squash with home made tomato sauce low fat cheese bake. mmmmmm Had that for dinner tonight with a salad and am still satisfied!
