Hello Y'all!

I'm trying to think of snacks that are low on sodium (my current intake is over 800mg and it seems to be mostly the cheeses I eat because I'm a vegetarian). But I also want them to be low in carbs. Which puts me right back into the range of cheeses. I know cottage cheese works well - but one can only handle so much of cottage cheese a day.

Any tips on filling snacks that are: vegetarian, low carb AND low sodium are super welcome!

:D

unsalted nuts,
peanut butter on celery or whole grain/low sodium crackers (I use wasa), vegetables with hummus
1T of Neufchatel is around 70mg
Trader Joe's sells at least two low sodium salsas (one is 30mg, one 40mg)
tofu shirataki
pan seared tofu
roasted vegetables
roasted seaweed

I doubt that seaweed is ever going to be low in sodium.

800mg sodium is already low, why do you want to go lower? The body needs salt, you know!

I meant 8000 - I was almost over 8000mg a day. I've succesfully brought it back to about 2000mg already. They sell the salt with 70% less sodium here. And just paying attention to what has it teaches you so much already. It appeared not so difficult to cut out the really bad salt-stuff.

The best way to find low-sodium snacks is to choose fresh, unprocessed
foods. If you choose packaged foods, read the labels to be sure the food is very
low in sodium. Here are some guidelines for choosing low-sodium snacks:
•Read food labels for sodium content before buying or eating packaged foods.
•Choose foods with less than 100 mg of sodium per serving. Foods with
100-140 mg of sodium are okay as long as you don’t have them every day.
•Compare different brands and choose the one with the least sodium.
Snack foods suggested here contain less than 140 mg of sodium.
Pay attention to serving sizes, as some are rather small.

I'm also vegetarian so eat a lot of cheese & have to watch the sodium.

For snacks I like:

a bowl of puffed wheat cereal (50 cals per cup) eaten dry like one eats popcorn, or with milk and sweetener

unsalted rice cakes with a smear of peanut butter and jam

a piece of fruit & a few almonds

Laughing Cow herb and garlic cheese--couple of wedges

Crystal Light and a few low sodium crackers

tofu sticks & low-cal dressing or dip

I know some of these are not low carb but being vegetarian one has fewer choices than meat-eaters. I try to eat lots of veggies at mealtime to avoid getting hungry and snacking. But there are those times you just want something to nibble on like everyone else while watching TV!

Lastly, ALWAYS having a bottle of Crystal Light on the go helps greatly. I've drunk it for years, and at age 64 in perfect health, I don't personally pay any attention to the debates about artificial sweeteners. But that's a personal decision of course.
