The year is half way done! Come here to share your running goals and aspirations. New, old, 1/2 mile or marathon, we don't care - we're ALL runners!
3 miles for me this morning and that puts me at 500 miles so far this year, right on track for 1000. My knees have felt really good the last couple days.
Sunday I'm scheduled for 12, excited and a little nervous. Last time I ran that far was last year.
Happy July!!!

nothing to be nervous about Ncuneo... you know exactly what to expect! :) its just a training run... relax into it and try to enjoy it! Have you tried listening to audio books or podcasts on long runs? they help SO MUCH with making the time go by and not getting bored.... if you dont already, you should start looking for Podcasts and books that interest you....... once you start doing 4 hour, 5 hour training runs........ ITS A LONG TIME to be alone in your head... and when you are going for that long music just doesnt cut it.. in my opinion

Any advice you ladies can give me right now on how to improve on my distance? I can run 4.5 miles right now, without stopping. Maybe 5, but I can confidently say 4.5. I would really, really like to work myself up to a 10k, then 1/2 marathon. Not so worried about speed... Just distance. Thanks in advance. With that being said, my July running goal is to be able to run 10k without stopping. Not concerned with how long it takes me (for now), just that I can do it.

I'm currently training for a 10k, the farthest I can run without stopping right now is about 3 miles, so I've got a way to go! The training programme I'm using is here if you're interested:
I think it's all about building up your distances gradually and improving your fitness with cross training.
My goal this month is to stay on target with my training, so it will be running 3 times a week and by the end of the month I'll be running 5 miles without stopping!

mkroyer I love listening to podcasts. It keeps me much more entertained than music!

I'm halfway through my one-week pledge for no exercise. I'm hoping my body will continue to enjoy it's vacation and be ready for 10K on Tuesday when I return to running.
I think this whole exercise sabbatical has been helpful. I'm looking forward to returning to working out.... I think I took a break right before I was about to burn out, mentally and physically.

nikki, 4.5 had been my best as well and I did 5 this morning. You're so close - it's gotta be mental at this point. What makes you not go the extra half - fatigue, specific pain, thirst?
The other thing that's made it harder for me is that it's starting to get hotter and humid, which has a HUGE impact for me - are you finding that as well?
I'm doing a 10K in September so want to feel like I can comfortably run 6 by the end of July. Unfortunately as I increased my distance beyond 5K, I've slowed down to about a 12 minute mile. Not worrying about it for now, hoping I can start to improve that once I've got the 10K distance down.

Hmmm, podcasts never thought of that.
This morning was epic, it was 85+ and 64% humidity. OMG it was brutal, but I had an awesome pace and felt really good. I was surprised to have a good run since I was 3000+ cals on Friday and Saturday and was pretty sure I was going to tank it. But I felt fantastic. And I discovered I've been cheating myself by not refuling mid-run. Holy cow did my performance improve! My GPS started freaking out about 9 miles in so I'm not positive what my pace was, but I'm pretty sure it was a PR. Either way I felt good and I'm glad I survived the humidity since my race is in Chicago, but remind me not to train for an August race again!

Hi there! I'm just starting out running (I used to do it but not competitively or anything just a couple times a week) and have been running almost everyday (aside from yesterday as my legs were a bit achy) for about a week now and i can get up to about 5K with a couple 2 minute breaks in about 28 minutes and I'm wanting to be able to run a 10K without stopping by the end of the month :)
One small question: can I run using old, kinda worn out running shoes or is that making me more prone to injury?

I did a 5k yesterday and my speed had improved to 16 min per mile. So today when I was out for my long run of the week, which moved up to 5 miles, I kept reminding myself to keep up the pace. I was pleasantly surprised when I got home and realized I had kept the 16 min per mile pace for the entire run.

My three sons and I did a race together on Sunday, but I didn't get much actual running in this holiday weekend. They have been wanting to do a race with me. They had fun and enjoyed the experience, but they all agreed that they were never running another race again LOL It was hot and sunny. They hadn't trained, and it wasn't a normal race with T-shirts, timing chips, and cheering fans. In my opinion, it was much, much better than the average race, but I can see why they missed the hype. My youngest and I took second to last place in the race and had a darn good time doing it! I wrote about it in my blog and even have a couple of rare photos if you want to read more about our Do Life race experience.

Good for you! I've only done 5 miles once and it felt like a huge accomplishment! I have about a 30 to 45 minute window to run most of the time, so even on the rare day when I feel like I could run forever, I run out of time. If only I could run faster, I could squeeze in more miles! LOL Awesome job on keeping up your pace AND going the long distance.

You gals "inspire" me to run outside. Been running on treadmill and well...kinda scared to run outside. Yup...scurrrred! Why? Because last time I ran outdoors (on trail), my left knee gave way and it was soooo embarrasing to have to limp back to my car and drive all the way home. I've been running indoors ever since.:(
That's it. Back to the open free...for some fresh air...birds chirping and yes OXYGEN!!!:D
I'm so stoked for you Ncuneo!:carrot: I find that my runs are ALWAYS stronger the day after eating high calorie.

Hi all!!! Happy July (a little late). I’m still plugging away on my half marathon training! This week I’ll do 14 miles total.
Hmm, I’ve heard of listening to an audiobook on runs to make time breeze by. Perhaps I should invest... This may be a dumb question, but what exactly is a podcast?
I’m beginning to see that my runs are really affected by my eating and hydrating (or lack thereof). Today was supposed to be a 4 mile run, but after far too many beers this weekend, I only made it 3 miles. Ouch. If I have any hope of actually doing this race, I’m going to need to focus on fueling my body.

Just did 4 miles at the gym (52 mins.)
Did 2.6 last night at a race. The race is through a park - so it is a little bit paved, a little trail, a little grass... and a lot of hill. I wanted to do it in under 30 (my time last year was 33mins and some-odd seconds). I did 30:24 (ooo! So close!) But it is a series of races - so I get to try again in a few weeks!
A half marathon question: I have my schedule set up for how many miles I should do on what days. I will be doing both TM and out door runs... (I LOVE the idea above about getting podcasts, etc. for longer runs - thank you!) For the shorter runs throughout the week - should I be working on anything in particular? Speed Intervals? Hill Intervals? A little of everything?

Up to you SC. My only concern for my first half was simply to finish without walking. So I didn't do any special speed work or anything. This time I'm still working on distance because I'm using it as a possible precursor to a full marathon. So you can work on other stuff, but you don't have to and IMO finishing and distance should probably be your focus for your first. Oh and have fun!
My 7 was ok this morning, it's still super humid out here and it's really effecting my pace and endurance.

You're all doing great with your runs girls!!!
I started running outside again with a friend a few weeks ago. First run out ran either too fast or too far (13k) and ended up completely ceasing up that night and in a lot of pain. Backed off the next week and did 10k slower, 11k the week after. Couldn't fit a run in my schedule last week so back to it this morning and did just over 11k at a faster speed and feeling it again tonight. I'm told it's my hip flexors that are causing the pain. I've just bought new shoes but haven't started using them yet, maybe I need to start breaking them in and see if they make any difference.
I'm in the UK and even when I was a kid I had a dream of running the London Marathon, so this year I entered the ballot! It's about a 1 in 7 chance of getting a place so I'm not holding my breath, and to be honest I don't know what possessed me to enter now that I look back lol, my longest run to date has been 13k a couple of times! So anyway, I'd like to start building my distance up slowly, definitely to a half marathon distance anyway, and then maybe beyond if all the stars align and early October fate tells me it's time to start training for a marathon!
At the moment I'm only running once a week, all my other workouts are classes, and I'm trying to figure out how to add in more runs without giving up the classes I love that I know help my fitness etc. Any ideas?
ncuneo
07-06-2011, 07:22 PM
OMG LovingMe! Love the new pic! And congrats on entering the marathon!!! When exactly are your classes and what kind are they. Need that info in order to suggest a way to incorporate more running. At minimum you'll need to get to 3 days a week, but more likey 4-5 days.

EXCELLENT!!!! SUPPORT!!!! WE CAN DO IT!!!! :D
SCraver, I’m running my first half in Oct. I’m only concerned with finishing the race without walking, but I have been working on speed on my short runs only because it’s been making my long runs easier. For example, if I push myself to run at a 10min mile pace for my 2 mile run, jogging my long run at a leisurely 13-14min mile pace seems much easier. Idk, maybe it’s a mind trick, but it’s working for me.

Hi girls
I have a 15k on Sunday here in Texas called "Too Hot to Handle" and a half marathon on July 23rd called "The Hottest Half". I think these are both appropriately titled. I am in the process of losing both of the toenails on my big toes. They don't hurt, but they are black and definitely ready to come completely off. It's kinda freaky!! LOL
I ran a mile last evening as fast as I could and came in at 6:57. It was my husband's bright idea that I should speed train every now and again to build not only endurance but get a little faster. I could never keep up that pace past one mile, but it felt so good.
You're all doing so well and give me great inspiration. Thank you and carry on.

July has been my month to get back into my running shoes.
I started running 2 years ago with the C25K program and completed my half-marathon in October. I did a 5k in January and then found out I was pregnant, 17 weeks later, I miscarried and am just now feeling *up* enough to run.
Its been fun finding my stride again. lots of 2 mile jogs, with a 3.1 on Monday. I am finding that my speed is lessened. I used to be a 10 min miler, but now am struggling to get up to an 11 min mile.
I guess it will just take time. Right?

Hi there! Would it be okay if I kind of join in here?
I'm not a runner, not by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I hate running!! BUT I love the feeling of accomplishment I get after I run, runner's high really gets me good. I've actually just picked up the C25K program this week, after not having run for about 6 years. 6-7 years ago I ran a marathon, came in 2nd to last place, and before that did the C25K program to start.
I am ready to get back to it! I'd really love to run a half marathon by my younger son's first birthday, which is in April of next year. I am 12 weeks post-partum now, and really finally feeling recovered and ready to get my body moving. I've lost about 45 pounds since he was born (only gained 8) and have at least another 50-60 pounds to lose until I'm around my goal weight. So a long journey ahead of me.
I don't really have a mileage goal for this month, just to make sure I get into the groove of things and follow my C25K program at least 3X week. I'm really excited to start crossing some finish lines again!

I wish I had the time to train for any type of race, lol. My goal by September 1st is to do 4 miles/ 4x week in like 45 minutes. I'm in my 5th week of jogging and am currently up to 2.5 miles/4x week for 30 minutes. Not bad for a gal on the cusp of turning 40 (in November!) and not having run anywhere for like 30 years, lol. I notice my endurance is much improved, I'm sleeping better and I've noticed an overall tightening of my body from head to toe. Hi y'all!
I'm kinda new here. Not a regular runner (at the moment I only get the chance to go running/walking around once or twice a week) but am working up to building my fitness level so by the time the weather warms up I will be able to take advantage of the better running weather and go for more frequent runs.
I started jogging about a year ago on and off so I still consider myself a beginner.
I'm currently monitoring my HR to keep it at the 80% range for my age so I have to jog R-E-A-L-L-Y S-L-O-W and resist the extreme urge to go 'he11 for leather'. When I go over my 'safe' level I either jog on the spot or walk for a while (which kinda sucks cuz I just wanna run, dammit!) to let my HR drop back but I know I have to be patient & I'll get there eventually.
Like fitmom I have to be careful too as there is a close family history of heart disease so gotta make sure I don't push it too hard.

Hey everyone! Looks like everyone is doing great! I'm feeling less sorry for myself this weekend and ready to keep going.
Long run today was a cutback, 9 miles, but I felt so awesome and was trying to get home before DS woke up so I could shower and did 10. I thought pasta was my key to good long runs, but I am now convinced my secret weapon is an Amy's Orgainic Pizza and a Skinny Cow Ice Cream Cup with a serving of PB. I don't know what it is about this combo, but every time I eat this dinner before a long run I rock it! Next weekend 14!!!!!! I'm really excited, this will be my longest run ever! So I'm determined to eat well all week so I can't blame any poor perfomance on too much sugar or overeating.
Have a great weekend everyone!

So, finished my 5 miles. I am a sweaty mess. Oddly enough, despite the heat and humidity, I had a decent pace.... 10:19 average. So weird. I guess it all depends on what your body feels like doing on any given day. I won't argue!

I've started running again...
Yesterday I ran/walked 1.55 miles in 20 minutes, I ran more than I walked.
Today I ran/walked 2 miles in 24:17. Ran far more than I walked. I'm slow as heck but I'm OK with that, I'm heavy (for me) and 5 months post C section and I had Bronchitis about 1 month ago blah blah. I'm trying to EASE myself back into running but I feel a strong urge to run more! I'm going to run 2 miles every day and get to the point that I don't need to walk any of it. Then go from there.

Arianwen you are kicking butt!! That is awesome - esp. when you throw in being 5 mo PP and having just had broncitis!
FatPantsSkinnyJeans I can't wait until I can do a 10 min/mile pace. I am working towards it... but I am SO slow. :)
shasha12 Congrats on the 6 miles!!
I did my long run yesterday - 7 miles. I averaged 15 min miles and I kind of got down on myself at first about going so slow. My muscles ached as I was doing it (maybe need better nutrition?) BUT then, the more I thought about it - a 15 min mile is walking like you need to get somewhere fast. Like you are hurrying to catch the bus. Ok... now do that pace for 7 miles. I don't know that I could (I ran a bit, walked a bit, rinse, repeat). So, then I felt better about the whole thing. Maybe better nutrition b/f my long run will yield better results. I will keep practicing!
Today my legs are SO SORE!!

I'm really frustrated because I seem to have this mental block where I cannot make myself run past 2.5 miles. Plus my time does not seem to be getting any better.
Thoughts?

Did week 1, day 3 yet again tonight, I had to step out for the middle portion of the run but I felt good. I really am ready to move on to the next week but I'm doing this with a group of girlfriends and so we're doing it all together- we had a friend join a little later which is why we're repeating the whole first week. It's nice to feel like I can run a little more though, so I may just try it on Wednesday and finagle my own longer runs. We'll see!

Just did my first run in 2 weeks. Man. I lost a LOT of fitness.
I did about 4.5 km in 31 minutes. On the treadmill. Before my running break I would do 5 km in 30 minutes outside (and longest distance would be 9 km). Crazy how much you can lose in just 2 weeks.
The good news is my knee doesn't hurt at ALL. I wore my brace. About to ice it then take a shower... hoping it stays feeling this good :)

I did something to my knee jogging tonight, now I can barely stand or walk without excruciating pain. It all feels "internal" so to speak - no swelling or external bruising, just pain whenever I stand on it/bend it. This is the worst possible time to be getting injured, 2 1/2 weeks left in Japan!

Congrats to the ones who are running their longest miles yet! Such an awesome feeling.
CherryPie-I feel your pain on the mental block. I think that happens to everyone at one time or another. Have you tried just taking a short walking break, then just pick a point and tell yourself you are going to run from A to B, then walk some more and repeat until you hit 3 miles. Good old intervals work at all stages.
Krampus-Sorry to hear about the knee issue.
I did 4.5 miles Monday. Good run. I think I'll take my Monday run to 5 miles next week.
I did some sprints/speed work today. I generally never do them but I figured it was a good time to start since I do want to work on my race times. I did short 15 second, then 30 second sprints with 1-2 minute slow jog cool down.

I'm planning to do 3 miles tomorrow. My longest run yet since starting 6 weeks ago. I also find my time is getting better. I love running in the early morning hours when it's still cool out. I'll let you know how I fare with the three miles. I want to increase to 4 miles by the end of the summer.
I also paln to increase my HIIT cardio which I do in a parking lot with sprints to twice weekly. I did my first one yesterday and my abs are sore as heck, lol. But I feel terrific.
I was always afraid to try running b/c of my age but I see people my age and older all the time out and about. It's reassuring. I'm starting to think age is all in your mind.
Glad to hear everyone is doing well with their running this month.

Hi Cheshirecat and thanks. Actually I do take a short break and then run again. Today I ran 2.5 miles straight, walked for .25 miles and then ran again for .25. I was really hoping to do the straight 3, but after the 2.5 I just gave in and walked. I suppose what's good about today was I ran my fastest 2 miles. The first mile was about average, but I really picked up from my normal 2nd mile pace. It's still really slow, but my personal best!

I'm gonna work my way up to four miles by the middle of August but this is great. I can't believe I ever thought running was for younger people. I. Can. Do. It. :)

RANT. I just went to the park for a run and it was closed. Apparently the park is closed during the day... which makes a lot of sense... considering that it's a park.
Yes, I am grateful I at least have a park to run in (unfortunately street running is not possible due to danger from automobiles and being female), so I guess I should be grateful it's open a couple hours a day. But wow. That's so frustrating.
(If this were any other country I'd say it was likely due to budget cuts, couldn't staff the park. But labor in India is one of the cheapest in the world... which actually leads to inefficiencies since hiring more people for pennies per hour do things manually is cheaper than doing it more efficiently with technology. The people who cut the grass in our complex sit on the ground and use hedgeclippers.)
India... you exasperate me. A lot.
I guess that means no run today.

The exact same thing happened to me when I started, lol. I used to take off like a shotgun and after about a minute, I'd be dying and out of breath. You have to start slow and continue steady. You also have to build up to running a few miles without stopping to take a break. I started off like walking for 2 minutes then running for 3 minutes and alternating on and off for like 30 minutes. It takes several weeks to build your endurance - at least it did for me. I'm up to 3 miles 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes but that's after 6 weeks of building my stamina. Don't get discouraged, it takes time. And the weight will fall off you, seriously. It did for me, lol. Hope this helps. :)

Yesterday was supposed to be 2.5 miles of a speed run, but I stupidly worked out before running, and didn’t fuel properly at all. Ran out of steam at 1.5 miles. I know it's halfway through July, but I wanted to jump in :) I have wanted to be a runner for years and finally feel like I AM! I started with C25K, did my first 5K then had a setback and didn't run again for a while. It took me a while to get going again, but I am now able to run 5 miles without stopping. I did a 10K once but I think I progressed too quickly because my knee didn't like me very much afterwards. I have always focused more on distance than speed (everything I read says that speed comes along naturally) and have improved from about a 13.5 min/mile to a 12 min/mile! My bf is a long time runner and is going to do a marathon in December so I am going to try to do the half. I never thought I'd ever complete a 5K much less a half marathon!
The thing that is killing me right now is the humidity here in SC! I did 5 miles yesterday morning, the temp was in the low 80's but the humidity was 86%! Yuck!! I've started taking a hydration belt with me even on shorter runs. It definitely helps. There are nights when I wait as long as I can to run and be able to get home before dark and it is still over 90 degrees, close to 100 with the heat index. I am ready for cooler weather!!
Reading through this thread is definitely motivating! I hope to be able to do 9, 10, 12 mile runs on a regular basis!

Well...I survived the 14 mile long run. It was my longest run ever. Instead of feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride, I'm feeling a bit sad because the thought of running 12.2 additional miles is a little daunting...Maybe I'm just meant to be a half marathoner. IDK. I'm trying not to make the decision in this state of mind. It wasn't a particularly good run. Well it was from and energy standpoint, but my legs were a problem the whole time. My knees hurt the whole time then my legs themselves then my feet (but I'm breaking in new shoes so that's no big deal).
I guess I need to remind myself that if I do decide to run a full that I had always intended to walk some of it, so that might help. At this point I'm runnign the entire time. I think that if around the 13 mile mark I plan to walk at all water stations I might be able to pull it off. I guess I'm just getting nervous because registration for the LA Marathon opens August 1st and it usually sells out.
For right now I think I just need to get my head out of that space and remind myself that I have a half marathon in 3 weeks and I still have a 15 miler ahead of me so just keep going!
Sorry, I'm a little scattered this morning - great job everyone!!!

I did 7 miles this morning. I was excited and worried about it, which is silly since I had no issues with 6 last week. I enjoyed it, even though I went out later than normal so it was hotter. Today was the first time I listened to Pandora, and I really enjoyed that.
Ncuneo - After I was done, all I could think of was that I had to go almost 2times that far for a 1/2. It seems daunting, but with training I know I can do it. I bet with increased training you could do a marathon ... if you want to.

Cheshirecat, ncuneo, envelope, all those miles!!! INSPIRING!
I did my 6.5 miles today! Yay me! I have a new “this is the most miles I’ve EVER run” moment every week. Makes me happy.
This week I did some sprints on my cross training day. Just sorta fell into it accidentally, but i LOVED how I felt! Not exactly cross training, but I think I’ll exchange one of my shorter mid-week runs for sprint training... Anyone have any experience?
Also, I am getting fitter every week, it feels great and soooo encouraging, but... I’m not really losing any weight. Training 6 days a week (3 runs, 1 run+strength, 1 strength+stretching, 1 cross training) calories are around 1500-1900. Any thoughts?

I was soooo sick this morning - like nauseous-sick so my HIIT cardio went out the window, lol. On another note, all the running has made me go from a C cup to a B cup which I'm not too happy about. But to be fair, I was a B cup for most of my life until my body fat went through the roof a few years ago. I keep telling myself that I'm still me even with smaller boobs but I'm not very curvy so my breasts were like the one womanly thing about me, lol. Although I was only a small C and now I'm like a full B so it's not like I'm flat like a pancake. *can't believe I'm typing about my boob shape* I just lost the fullness in the middle - sorry about the TMI. *sheepish* But I did convince my hubby to take me shopping this morning so I could buy some new pretty new bras. Anyhoo,
fitmom-Your boob talk had me laughing. I shrunk in that area as well. But after a bit I really grew to love my new size. They are small but I can so get away with those bras with no underwire and love that!
JuhiR-Keep consistent and a 5k in October will be great!
Shasha-I'm just starting to get into sprints or speed work. I've been wanting to try it out and there is this one race next year I want to place in because they had a the best awards! Haha, motivation!
But I like that you can just open up and run all out. I tire quickly but I do like it and will keep it up. I know there are tons of way to do speed workouts. But I'm going to go to a hill and sprint up then jog down and have a minute to recover then go again.
Hdallas-I totally hear you on the humidity! I never come back dry from a run. I'm sweating full on and it just sticks to you! Yuck.
ncuneo-It's daunting when you look at the miles but you train for a marathon just like you trained for the 1st half marathon. It seemed like there were so many mile and what the heck to do you for hours on end and how do you keep running?! But you can do it. Put trust in a good training plan and you'll get there!

Elle, that is awesome, I think we've all been there at one point or another. When I start last January I could barely run a 1/2 mile.
So after my 14 I was supposed to run 5 Monday morning, but I don't think anything could have drug my butt out of bed so I went for the dreadmill in the afternoon. Still didn't get in 5, for one I just wanted to rest my knees and two a friend I hadn't seen in a while show'd up to the gym so I joined her on the eliptical for 2 miles after running 3 miles. So close enough.
I've been going round and round mulling over the marathon decision and think I may postpone it for a bit. If my knees we're bothering me (I think it's a small injury from not replacing my insoles and running on them for 3 months) I may think differently and maybe I'll change my mind. But for now the plan is to run my half in August, cut my milage back a smidge for a few weeks then maybe do another half at the end of the year another small break and then start working toward a 20 mile long run and then see how I feel.
All I want is for this to be challenging but fun. I never want running to be a chore or something that I don't look forward to the majority of the time.
No run today (although I may sneak a mile warm up in) just ST and Yoga.

Hello, I am a jogger, I guess?! :^: I'm not a runner by any means, that's for sure. I am training for a Spartan Race in October and it's a 5K, so I would love to jump in on this thread. I started my "jogging" training two days ago and did 1 mile straight at 4.5 and 1.0 incline (granted, it took me 13:26, but I did it). It's in the 90s and humid this week, so I'm sticking with the treadmill for now.
I would like to work my way up to 3 miles without stopping, but I don't know how often I should be jogging. Since I'm new at this, should I be doing this daily or every other day? I don't want to risk injury and I don't know much about jogging/running, so any advice would be appreciated! :)

I did 5K at the park today. Knee feels GREAT. Foot felt uncomfortable, but I don't think it really affected my run. It was hurting after I got home so I iced it quickly. Still numb from the ice but I think it helped.

Emme - Google C25K and you will find the Couch to 5K program. If you can run a mile straight already, you may find the first few weeks easy. It also gives you an idea on how much rest you might need between runs. BTW - you are already faster than I am, I jog an average of 15 min per mile. Although I think I did it slightly faster by jogging every other day. I currently jog 5 days a week.

I used to be in the military and was really into running & boxing when I was in (oh, and not to mention the best shape of my life... sigh). I have gotten back into running. This week I have done:
Monday: 5 miles @ 50 mins
Tuesday:5k @ 29:15
Yesterday: 5 miles @ 48:38
Right now I am debating taking today as a rest day from running & doing ST (as I forgot to stretch yesterday before my run & I am really feeling it today), or sucking it up & running 5k after work. We'll see.
I want to get up to 10k (which I think I could do in the next week or so), but I think I need to focus more on improving my speed/time for the distances I am currently doing. What do you all think? What is "more important"? Running further and slower, or faster and for a shorter distance? I want to make sure I have my runner's priorities straight! Thanks ;)
ncuneo
07-21-2011, 10:23 AM
Depends Nikki, although I think your times are great. If your goal is weight loss then slower and longer. If your goals are just running then you have to ask yourself do you want to train for speed or distance? Two totally different things. In runners terms I don't think one is better then another, they are just different goals.

indiblue: That's what I've heard too. To increase the speed and distance little by little. The last thing I need is to like blow out my knee or hurt my ankle b/c my enthusiasm gets the better of me, lol. I have a 2 mile circle-like route by my house that would be perfect for me to do twice around for the four miles (when I get to that point). It's weird about the speed b/c the longer I run, I'm finding I'm naturally getting a bit faster. When I first started, I used to trot, lol. Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better.
nikkinouille: My father is a former Marine and he always jokes about how he used to run like every morning. He showed me pictures of him from back then and his stomach was like a washboard, lol. This week I've logged a couple of shorter, faster runs (2.3 mi, 3.5 mi) and I have gotten my pace up to 11:20 min/mi (down from 13:40)! Tonight, despite the heat, I am going to shoot for 5.5 miles and keep it a little slower. I need to focus more on distance than speed since I am just aiming for being able to finish the half marathon in December, but it sure feels good to see progress in my speed! I'll shoot for 6 miles Saturday morning and then we are off to Vegas on Sunday. We are planning on getting up early at least one morning that we're there and running the strip. It should be fun!
To all of the newer runners (like myself) that have posted - keep up the good work :) You have no idea what your body is capable of until you push yourself! I started with C25K and never in a million years thought I would be able to run 2 miles without stopping much less 13.2, but I am going to do that half marathon in December come he** or high water!
ncuneo: you inspire me so much :) I hope it won't be long until I am going out for 14 mile runs!

Since I'm such a newbie to the world of running, I have a question for the more seasoned runners. I'm a bit *obsessed* with the way my stomach looks particularly since giving birth - twice, anyway, I read that you should be sucking in or holding your stomach in while you run, is this true? I tried doing that and then not doing that and didn't feel any difference, lol. Has anyone heard this and implemented it while running? Just curious.

@ ncuneo / fitmom - thanks for your perspectives! i think at this point, i would be more impressed with myself if i ran for a longer distance, rather than worrying about improving my speed. once i get where i am at comfortably, distance-wise - i can start upping the speed a little.

Awww! Thanks hdallas!
Nikki, I should also comment that if fat loss is your goal, slow and distance is better HOWEVER, not too much distance. Once you start getting too high in the distance catagory you'll start to have a more difficult time losing. It is almost impossible for me to lose while training for anything. I've noticed that once I start going above 20 miles per week my fat loss haults.
I read that you should be sucking in or holding your stomach in while you run, is this true?
I have never heard this and I think it would be hard to do! I can't image adding something to the list of things to do while running, (i.e. form, breathing, etc.:)) I personally have just gotten over the stomach thing. I unfortunately gained to much weight and a saggy stomach is just my punishment, or how about badge of honor that's more positive.
Yesterday I supposed to do 7, but I just wasn't feeling it so I eeked out 5. I may try again tomorrow, we'll see. I'm kinda taking it easy this week, I just feel tired and TOM is around the corner. I still have 3 weeks after this until my half so plenty of time to kick it back up. Next week is peak week too so I want to be rested and ready!
ST and Yoga today.

ncuneo: I googled around and the term is called, 'static flexing'. Supoosedly, it helps your stomach muscles look better at rest and in a neutral state. If you flex slightly while doing daily activities or even jogging, etc., the thought is that you train your abdomen to stay in a semi-flexed state permanently. It sounds somewhat feasible b/c I'm a devotee of Pilates and that's the whole function behind Pilates - that the core is the powerhouse, pull your navel toward your spine, etc. It was mentioned on a few running sites so that's why I threw the question out here on this thread. Thanks. :) Ditto on the TOM, mine's just about over. And it's been so darn hot by me (100 degree heat) so that's zapping me of any energy I may have had.

For me this was true. It's how I got abs from just running.:) I like to focus my mind on my stomach while making a slight twist from side to side. I know...sounds difficult, but it's really not...and after only a short while becomes habit. Hey...if your gonna run, might as well get the most bang for your buck!:D
Today we're getting weather like 104 degrees or better. Actually, last night it felt like 110! So no running for me this weekend. I'm going to the beach tomorrow and bringing my bike, boogie board, beach chair and umbrella!:D Been swimming laps this week. Muscles are really sore...especially my upper body. Gonna get in some deadlifts today.:)
Stay cool everybody!

Joy, make sure those twists are very small, don't get offended but that is poor running form and can really cause issues with your knees and feet. When you run you naturally twist somewhat, but adding too much torque can really mess things up.

I ran 3K in 28 minutes today. :( Not happy with that time. But in all honesty, it was so darn hot even at 4:45 a.m. like 85 degrees so I was off my game slightly. Oh, I don't know, maybe I'm expecting too much from my middle-aged body, lol. Anyway, I'll try again tomorrow. :)
joyfulloser: I tried sucking it in but it felt strange, lol. I actually do have a decent (I said decent, not great, mind you) six-pack which I got mainly from eating better combined with the running. I guess whatever works for you. Although I will admit that when I'm just sitting or cooking or something like that I will pull my navel in toward my spine. Who says you can't multi-task? LOL.
ncuneo: You're like a wealth of information! I bow to your running greatness. :p

Ncuneo - I hope my weight loss does not stop or slow down because of distance. I am jogging 22 miles a week and adding a 1 mile or 2 a week for the next 5 weeks.

Joyful...offended? Naaaahhh! Hmmm...this might explain my bum left knee?:?: It's not really that exaggerated twisting that I do...it's weird, it's like a "half crunch" held while slightly twisting (if that makes any sense). Anywho...it's probably better at forming obliques.;)
I learned this trick many many moons (20 yrs) ago, while weight training. Actually, if you just think "abs" you will subconsciously flex them. Just hold that flex for as long as you can throughout the day. You'll be surprised at how much better it works for building ab muscles than situps.:)
Ok...the heat outside is outrageous! I'm taking half day off work (great thing about working at home) and going swimming.
Have a great weekend all.

I guess I'd just say make sure your hips aren't twisting too ya know.
Thanks fitmom.
Envelope, I wouldn't worry about it. Try to enjoy the training and go with it. If you find yourself plateauing distance is the likely culprit. I'm in the high 20s right now, dead halt on my loss, but I dropped to 20 even this week cause I needed a rest and even overate a little and I lost some weight. So I'm just hanging tight til my half marathon then I'll drop my milage for a bit lose this stupid 10 lbs and then start thinking about what's next for me on the running front.
I wasn't able to workout yesterday. DS got sick, had to pick him up early and he threw up all over me when we got home. I was kinda done for the day. Easy 3 this morning and will end cutback week with 9 Sunday. Next week peak week! 33 miles for the week with 15 as my long. Oye! That will be my longest ever!!!
Keep it up girls!

I FINALLY got in a longer run today. I did 5.76 miles in 1 hr 14 minutes at 6:45 am. It was down to 77 degrees, but with the 90% humidity - holy crap! I was soaked by the time I got home!
I am getting worried about being able to handle the half marathon in December. I did less than half of a half today and it seemed to take forever. I hope by then I will be lighter, faster and be able to hang in longer. At this pace it will take me 3 hours to finish!
I did hit my first weight goal yesterday. I challenged myself to lose 20 lbs in 10 weeks and as of yesterday I'd lost 20.2 lbs in 9 weeks 3 days :-) I leave for Vegas tomorrow and bought a size 6 dress for dinner tomorrow night at the Eiffel Tower restaurant! I figure I'm going to gain at least 5 lbs on vacation, LOL! At least we'll be doing lots of walking and plan to run the strip at least once while we're there!
I hope you all have a great weekend!

UGH. My left foot continues to hurt when I walk or run. I ran anyway this morning- about 30 minutes. My foot really hurts, to the point where I have to limp. I've been RICE-ing it, which has helped, but it's still painful.
I've decided no more running until it completely stops; at least 3 weeks.
I hate this. Back-to-back injuries? Literally the run my knee stopped hurting my left foot starts?
It's not the shoes (I don't think). I *just* bought Saucony ProGrids 2 months ago. I've only put on about 10-12 miles a week on them, nothing significant.
What is going on???

Fingers crossed...

Ncuneo - hope your son is feeling better.
hdallas - You are already faster than I am and you have lots of time to increase your speed before Dec. I did 8 miles yesterday and it took me 2hrs 3m. My 1/2 is in 7 weeks. This pic was posted on the bootcamp thread I follow and I love it.
Sorry, couldn't resist.:) Take care of your sick poo bear Ncuneo!;)
Ncuneo - Oooops! Just realized you were talking about your SON, not your HUBBY...sorry.:( Hope he feels better soon.:)

Hey all!
Today is a wee bit cooler (under 87 degrees?) so I was finally able to complete my "short run" (4 miles) with an average pace UNDER 11 minutes. My MapmyRun thingy said I averaged 10:29. I'm ok with that, since I felt like I was heavy and dragging a$s the entire time. I'm in a bit of a slump. Bleghck!
Every time I go out for a run, I feel slow and fussy and like I just want to be done. Maybe it's the weather, combined with a bad frame of mind and way too much eating. Siiiigh. Workin' on it.
Joyfulloser-- Love the swimming idea. Do you do it indoors at a gym, in the ocean, etc? How do you incorporate it?
envelope-- That sign makes me smile :)
indiblue-- Hope they can help you with the foot! PS- your ticker is motivating me. I need to get where you are!
hdallas78-- Congratulations on your weight loss achievement! I hope your vaca is fab. I'm doing a 1/2 in September and I am slightly freaking out as well, for the exact same reasons. I feel like an elephant when I run. Waahh! We'll get through it, even if it does take all day to finish the damn thing...
ncunceo-- Is the kiddo feeling better? How was the uber-long run? You're inspiring me to keep pushing through my 1/2 training!
Keep on runnin,' gals, and keep us posted!

Thanks Joy, I was trying to figure out why I didn't get your comment LOL! That would be quite the joy of marriage if it was DH that puked all over me! DS is doing great, thanks everyone for asking.
The uber long run is this Sunday. This week is a pretty big deal, it's the longest weekly milage I've ever run - 33 miles and the longest long run I've ever run - 15 miles. It breaks down as such 5/8/5/15. So today was 5. Nothing special, just your run of the mill 5 miler. Unfortunately my stupid period is due any second, it had better get here before my 15, I'll cry if I have to run with cramps!
Anywho, TMI:) happy running everyone!

FPSJ congrats on the <11 pace! Haha I know what you mean about other tickers being motivating- but I need to get my rear in gear because I've been at 123-124 for over a month now and really really want to get to goal!
ncuneo oo good luck! fingers crossed the cramps cooperate ^_^
shasha hope you have a great 5 miles!

So I just got back from the orthopedist/physical therapist. She gave me a very nondescript diagnosis that there were probably some damages to the ligaments/tendons around my ankle. She proscribed me an ankle strap and an enzyme tablet...?? I looked it up online and apparently enzymes to treat inflammation and infection are not endorsed by the FDA, but common in India. I can't find much info on this drug. It's apparently something of a natural herbal treatment.
So I haven't decided if I'm going to take it or not. I've lived overseas a lot and I'm still really really skeptical about the medical care in India... maybe more than I should be? :-/

Thanks ladies! Well it's almost 5am I'm just waiting for DH to get home from his overnight shift so I can head out. I feel good and ready this morning, but the bad news is it's 90 degrees out and 44% humidity. I've told myself to just go with it and have fun. This isn't my first half, it won't be my last and 15 miles is above and beyond training so if it's too much there's no shame in cutting it short. I know I'm going to run out of water too because my water bottle is too small and doesn't stay cold.
Ok, here we go!

Still requiring a self-imposed hiatus for my foot. It's feeling much better. Hope to be back running next week.
