I am all for a summer thread! Bring it on! ;-) The summer and the thread I mean!
As Josey said.... :carrot:
So I may have found a training partner who is interested in training for a half marathon after we finish training for 10k on our own. This could be a very good thing.

Happy Canada Day chicks! I'm saying this today because I'll be camping without internet access tomorrow :D I can't wait! It's finally supposed to be nice out. In a few hours I'll be sitting by a campfire... light beer in hand with nothing to do! Then next week I start training for my 10k and after that the half!
Have a great long weekend!

Sheesh, very quiet here eh?
Anybody interested in two more Canadian challenges for this year? I am hoping to reach my goal before Christmas and I really really like challenges.
I thought we can do a Thanksgiving Day and a Remembrance Day challenge!?

No worries! I am sure a few will join the challenges when I post them.

THANKS AUNTY ~ for starting the summer thread. I was having such trouble with my old PC ... but great news, as of today, I am on my new(er) PC and on high speed internet so I can come on regularly again. I got so behind on this thread and the Diabetics one as well.
What a huge difference a newer PC and HS internet make ... it's unbelievable really. We are having cooler weather for July, but it is still a bit sticky & humid (have my DE-humidfier going strong today).
I don't know if I told you gals or not; but DH and I bought a house in May and will be moving in August. We had to wait a while becuz they had tenants in the house. Meanwhile, we have been very busy sorting & packing up all our stuff; and it has been really nice to take our time -- not so hard on the body & feet.
Hope you all had a wonderful CANADA DAY ...
:welcome: FATGYRL ~ those are nice pics of your furry babies on the beach; what a great place to walk ...
I am going to go have some lunch with DH now (he is just back from helping a friend with his deck), but will come by to share more ... have a nice day ... Rosebud :val3:

AUNTY ~ have a nice camping trip ...:D
JOSEY ~ thanks for carrying us along; hope your challenge is going better. Why not start a new one? Maybe it will give you fresh motivation ... ;)
I've been doing really well this year; only had a few slips but I just kept on going and made improvements. Practising my strategies to deal with the emotions (using lots of positive affirmations, distractions, songs, etc) and am getting better & better all the time (practice does make perfect). DH still seems to be the main emotional factor for me (which is normal I think; albeit more rare these days), but encounters with stressful people occurs too. Thankfully, this happens only on occasion now ... yes!
Time to put my legs up for an hour to rest them ... Rosebud :val3:

Hi Rosebud :) Glad to see ya. How's the packing going?
We had an amazing trip, thanks for asking. The guys went fishing and the girls relaxed. I didn't get a lot of walking done but did manage one good one down to the lake. The guys caught a lot of fish so we had the most amazing fish fry mmmmmm.... so good!
Fatgyrl - Cute pups :)
Justwant2Bhealthy
07-17-2011, 01:45 PM
AUNTY ~ that fish fry sounds like fun, esp if the guys caught & cleaned that fish; that's the deal I have with DH -- if he does the catch & clean, I'll cook it ... ;) Sometimes, he's sneaky and will feign that he is having trouble filleting them and then I take over ... maybe I'm a bit of a sucker, but I don't like cooking at midnight too much ...
The morning was very :hot: here; about 90 F again, but now some lovely clouds have rolled in and it's actually raining out there -- don't mind that at all, as those temps fall. :D
The packing is going great; I have more than half our stuff packed -- actually, anything we are not using right now. I'm starting on the boots & shoes, more clothes, and extra food stuffs this week coming up. We cleaned out all the cupboards, closets, dressers, drawers, and behind most of the big appliances & furniture last week.
As I'm going, I'm tossing or giving away as much as I can; I still have too many books, even though I gave away two full boxes of them, but I'll go through them all again when I get there. I tried to keep mostly ones that I haven't read yet, or ones I really loved. Gonna pass some onto my step-mother and some friends too.
Just went and picked up a deli chicken for supper and some fresh veggies for salad and stuff like that; got back just before the rain started. Time to go put my feet up for a while and read too ... have a great week coming up people ... Rosebud :flow2:

What?!? It says the last time I was here was in June. Yikes! Well good to see you ladies have kept the maple leaf torch going.
I have been essentially camping since the middle of May. We got running water a few weeks ago- Toilets!! Yay!! If I never see an outhouse again, it's too soon! Lol. Things have picked up though - we got a stove and dishwasher yesterday. I would never. ever. ever. recommend building a house. I will never do this again. Good grief. It's sure fire way to fast track a divorce that's for certain. Anyways - we have had a serious lack of healthy food around the house, b//c we have no fridge. Just a little tiny bar fridge, so I have been judicious about what produce can survive well in a crazily small and unevenly refridgerated space. Not too many. I think we will get a new fridge at the end of the month. Anyways, that's my ramble. I'm getting back to a groove. So that's good. Anyways everyone have a great day!!

Rose - Glad to hear things are going well. It's good to sort through the house every once in a while and get rid of the clutter. I haven't done that in years and I really should. Send some of your sun this way please... all we have is rain and mosquitos :( with the rare partially sunny day.
Josey - How's C25K and your challange going? Are you where you want to be?
Tam - That sounds like a nightmare, I'm glad things are getting better. I don't think I could live without a fridge!
Arminda - Maybe you can do what I did and start my own personal challange. Although I'm not doing so well on meeting my goals... I'm blaming that on TOM and depression. Gotta get my butt moving!
BTW... I've decided mosquitos are natures way of saying "Run fat girl, RUN!" ;)
josey
07-20-2011, 02:57 PM
Aunty - I just started C25K again, after a week no running, and it is going well! W8 is done. Will start the last week of the program tomorrow. YAY!!
The challenges took a bit of a hit but I still have the chance to complete my Midsummer one. 4lbs in 2 weeks! Keep your fingers crossed!
Mosquitos are sure a pest. Your backyard is the prime breeding ground apparently. Lots of shade! ARRGGHH!
Tam - And she is baaack!! Yay! Toilets are sure nice eh?

AUNTY ~ you're right about those skitters ... one night, there were a pile of them in our livingroom, but I couldn't understand why there were so many all of a sudden; so after trying to fend them off (I mean, kill them off as best as I could), I decided to go to bed and get under the covers. Well, I go into the bedroom, turn on the light; and there are dozens more in there.
Sooo, DH and I go on a mosquito raid mission; him killing them and me wiping the walls from all the blood & guts & gore. Well, I gave up counting at 3 dozen. Then, the girl next door starts pounding on our wall; the dog starts barking; and the landlord shows up at our door -- asking what's wrong? Turns out the bedroom window that the air conditioner was in, had no screen and the tape holding the guard came off ... so, we were being swamped with those little bloodsuckers ... ;)
Anyway, DH & the landlord taped up the window really well, and we have been OK since then. I had so many bites, and was so itchy, that I didn't get to sleep til at least 4 AM. Anyhow, lesson learned; I check that danged window continuously now.
I asked DH "Why did GOD makes those mini-vampires, anyway?" He said, "i don't know." But then I thought that He'd probably made them for the birds to eat, and I love birds -- I just wish they didn't have to SUCK OUR BLOOD first!!!
OH, TAM ~ I hear ya loud & clear; DH and I took on the ridiculous idea of building a cabin on our lot. Talk about DUMB & DUMBER! I refuse to talk to him about it anymore becuz he just gets mad; it's not his fault that his memory is so bad now that he gets his measurements all mixed up; and he needs constant supervision, but he doesn't want any ... catch my drift?
I was getting sorely concerned that tame, kind, sweet, little ole me, just might take drastic action :frypan: upon my poor DH before the thing got even halfway done (it still isn't even 1/4 ways done, and we started 4 years ago), so I decided turning the other cheek and pretending that I'm deaf was better than a D-I-V-O-R-C-E, right? Right! And, who needs the added stress; I sure don't ...
Sooo, I just took some of my own savings and bought a camper instead, and I love it. Now, I just want a deck & a screened-in porch on the back of my closed-in porch (you have no idea how funny that is; cuz that's all we have done). The neighbours may think we're crazy but at this point, I don't care ... AND, we just bought a house in town instead ... YA, BABY -- JUST BUY ONE! :D I cannot say -- THANK YOU, GOD ... enuff!
And that toilet in my camper is so nice; I have a full four-piece bathroom in there. That alone was worth the money. The bathroom is on one full end; the compact kitchen is in the middle; and the livingroom/bedroom is on the other end. It's so nicely set up. I call it my hideaway -- so does DH. Wonder who I'm hidin' from ... ;)
Anyhow, packing is coming along very well and yes, I am trying to get rid of as much stuff as I can; that's less to move. Had a homemade hamburger & salad for dinner tonight. Did laundry and housechores today.
We had 90F here today and that was with clouds; but there was a heavenly breeze today which made it more bearable. No :rain: yet, even though they expected it.
Time for tea; have a great week, fellow Canucks ... Rosebud :D

HOly mosquito batman! I am glad to see we aren't the only ones swatting those little a-holes everynight buzzing around our heads.
Now Rosebud - I wish you'd told me this last year, maybe I would have opted for a camper! Lol!
Josey!! - C25K - Excellent work. I love going for a run. Well...I'll go for a walk today with the pups, but I admire you doing that!
Aunty Jam - Your summer sounds like it's been good with the camping and I agree with your take on the mosquitoes.
So soccer tonight and then I reallyreallyreally need to make a plan. A better plan...a bigger plan....a to heck with it maybe just weight watchers.

Aunty Jam, thanks for the suggestion. I'm definitely challenging myself. I started working out 2 weeks ago, and I was walking up a hill with 80ft of elevation only 5 times. Now I'm walking up the same hill 10 times and doing 10 push ups (on my knees) every time I get back to the bottom of the hill. One day I hope to be able to run 10 hills and do 10 regular push ups after every run.

Armida - I am getting ready to post a new challenge for end of September. My Midsummer Madness deadline is next week, then I have room in my signature for a new one. So stay tuned.

I just checked the calendar. How about a Canadian Thanksgiving challenge? It is not quite end of September but close enough (Oct 10). Any takers? I love to use our holidays. The Victoria Day and Canada Day challenges were big successes, not only for Canadians.

Good Afternoon Lovely Ladies!
Armida - Welcome!!
Josey - Do you run alone? I live on an acreage and there are two women neighbors who go regularly, but I'm not sure if I should join them. Maybe one day I will. Not sure yet. Also9 about the challenge name: I'll think about it but I'm sure it should incorporate some turkey-esque element to it.
Well, this week my eating has been CRAP, but on the upside I've played soccer twice, and burned a bazillion calories doing so. I really really do need a food journal. Maybe that is a good starting point. Okay - off to go and play with the dogs. They are starved for attention today.
Everyone have a great week!!

Hey everyone :D
Rose - I think I would have gone insane with all those skitters around! I used to have a dog that chased and ate bugs of all kinds... I miss her this summer! LoL I agree about the birds, I love birds to. I hate spiders but I don't destroy their webs because they may get a few more of the blood suckers.
Josey - 4 pounds in 2 weeks! You can do it girl! A thanksgiving challenge sounds good to me, I still can't get my butt moving so I'm sucking big time on my personal challenge. I just don't know what's wrong :( The challange has to have the word "Gobbling" in it somewhere LoL.
Armida - Sounds like you are well on your way! I would suggest setting a time limit for your goal, that can be a big help.
Tam - <sigh> I think I'm in the same boat except I'm having a heck of a time getting up this time. Where the heck is my motivation!?
josey
07-25-2011, 12:33 PM
Aunty!!
I can happily report a 3lbs loss this week! One more and I meet my goal for the challenge! Woohoo!
Gobbling? Sounds good but I am not sure if I am creative enough to come up with a challenge name that has gobbling in it. Any ideas? ;-)
Well, you could join the challenge with any kind of goal. It doesn't mean x amount loss. How about maintaining until Thanksgiving? I think that is tough enough to make it a good goal and at least you are not gaining!
I try to train my cat to catch mosquitoes and other bugs but he is more interested in mice, bats, birds and frogs. I hate spiders too!!!

AUNTY ~ ya, they can drive you buggy, can't they? They are all gone now, thank goodness; I should have known there had to be a hole somewhere becuz we don't usually have any in here.
 JOSEY ~ glad to be back here regularly again; this PC is so much faster, I can do more posts at one sitting. Best wishes for the fall Thanksgiving Challenge -- how 'bout THE TURKEY RUN or THE TURKEY TROT THANKSGIVING CHALLENGE... ;)
We went over to our new house to do a last minute inspection today; DH had tidied up the yard some so I was able to get some nice pics today. We are now planning the colors to paint the rooms the first week of August and my SIL has volunteered to help DH paint the place which is super!
My flowers are in full bloom; lots of bright orange Lilies and still some peonies on the branches -- but I need to do some dead-heading I think, the next time we go over. I discovered two huge RHUBARB patches in the back yard that I didn't know were there: been getting a nice surprise like that almost every time we go over.
Got all the insurance stuff done today, and we do the last signing tomorrow with the lawyer -- then it's only one week and we can start painting and cleaning too (looks like somebody already started). Plus someone cut the grass. We are very excited about it all.
Since I have most of the packing done already, I am gonna rest my back & body for a few days before next week comes. Time for tea -- have a great week everyone ... Rosebud :flow2:

Hey ladies - new here! I'm wondering if any of you have any tips with coping the Canadian summer. Last week we were in the high 40s with the humidex so running outside at any point in the day is nearly impossible. I'm trying to do C25K but I don't want heatstroke! I don't have A/C at home either but our basement gets cooler. I see many of you are from Alberta so maybe you won't feel my pain haha (my boyfriend is from Calgary and is there for the rest of summer - sounds nice and mild and dry!). Good luck on losing this week!

Welcome!!
Coolish Prairies here :-)
Do you have a gym near by? The treadmill works for C25k. We actually bought a cheapo treadmill since we live in the boonies without a gym close by.
Or try running in the early morning hours. 6ish? Well, if you can stand getting up early I guess.

My school's gym is great but my membership is up until it starts again in September - starting then, NO EXCUSES!! Maybe I could pick up a cheap treadmill on Kijiji or something like that. I leave for work at 8 am so it'd be a real push to run before, but I've heard it can improve your energy throughout the day. Definitely better than running alone late at night! Thanks for the tips.
I think I might try a bit of strength training or something in the basement, but I have no idea where to start. I'll see if there's anything on youtube.

:welcome2: SOPHIE ~ I am in Northern Ontario and it is much cooler in the AM here, so we do more stuff then (like JOSEY suggested); and have a siesta in the late afternoon or early evening, when the temps get too high. The treadmill in the basement is a good idea too.
JOSEY ~ glad you like that name; maybe I could count all my walking for each day, as my knees won't let me run ...
Did all the last signing for the house today; yeah! Just one more week and we can get at the prep phase. I am resting for a few days; as my back was a bit sore, but I am way ahead.
Time for a tea and put my legs up (my evening siesta) now that it is cooling down outside again. Have a good day tomorrow ... Rosebud :flow2:

Josey - I wish I could say I haven't gained!!! At my lowest I was 145, right now I average between 153 and 155 :( I just can't get my butt in gear and I don't know why. I wish you guys were all here so you could kick my butt on a daily basis. I like the Turkey Trot name also :) I was going to suggest something like galloping gobbling.
Rose - Rubarb is good with enough sugar... ;) We have a patch too, my Dad loves rubarb pie but hasn't had any in a long time so I'm going to make him one this year. He likes it mixed with strawberries. I'm glad all went well with your signing!
Sophie - Nice to meet ya. Any activity is good, when it's warm here I work out in the basement too. A treadmill is a really good idea, it's how I stay running in the winter. But remember it's easier to run on the treadmill then it is outside or on a track. If you can set it for a slight incline to make it more realistic.

HAPPY SUMMER LONG WEEKEND ~ hope you are all enjoying our August holiday weekend; we are blessed in this province to have them each month. It's :hot: here again, but it is supposed to cool down again by Monday ...
JOSEY ~ I did a lot of walking this week; trying to figure out how to estimate it all though, as I packed my pedometer already (drats). I take breaks in between but it adds up in the end.
AUNTY ~ I use some artificial sweetener in mine to cut down on the sugar (ie Splenda is good); and I almost always mix in other fruit with the Rhubarb like apples, strawberries, or even blueberries (either together or just two fruit at a time). Last time I made apples & rhubarb with sweetener and cinnamon; and sprinkled some granola on top before eating it, just like a fruit crisp. I like Rhubarb in fruit crisps too. One of my all-time favorites is Rhubarb & Cherry pie; then apple & rhubarb (but haven't had either in a very long time) ... yum!
We picked up Deli BBQ spit chicken to have for dinner this weekend; having mine with salad & DH will have his tators. Have a great weekend ladies ... Rosebud :flow2:

Morning everyone... hope you all had a great long weekend. We went camping and had a really good time... ate a few smores though. It looks as if summer has finally arrived here! It's supposed to be hot finally next week 28°with humidity. So far we've been calling 2011 "The year the misquitos came and summer didn't". Don't get me wrong, I don't envy you guys with the 35° temps, I think I would melt in that.
Armida - That's great that your partner exercises with you! The most mine will do is go for a walk.
Rose - my dad likes rubarb - strawberry pie... on our next coolish day I'm going to make him one.. there's lots of barb in the garden!

 HELLO FELLOW CANUCKS ~ ya, it's summer alright; posting gets mighty scarce during this time of year, but we're all busy and that's A-OKaaaay! We've been busy all this week over at our new house; been cleaning, then now painting. So far, we have most of the kitchen (we did that first), the livingroom & about half the hallway done. Not bad since there is only four of us and we all have our physical challenges.
We took today off to rest; DH's friend put new locks on our doors today while it was quiet. I puttied a hole in one wall so it will be dry in time to paint this week. I'm quite happy with the light colors I chose; it really brightens the place up and makes it seem even bigger. That's a good decor trick: light colors to make rooms seem larger; and brighter or darker colors to make large rooms appear smaller & more cozy.
We had really hot temps last week, but our house stayed at least 10 degrees cooler than this place -- I'm sure it's the brick exterior doing that, and we are appreciating this right now. We had a nice cool breeze today. Ate well this week; stayed within my plan pretty good with a couple of treats within serving sizes -- I'm getting better at this.
I'm gonna go pack a lunch now to take with us tomorrow -- have a great week coming up & do enjoy our last month of summer ... Rosebud :flow2:

Hi Rose - I'm glad someone is getting summer! Ours decided not to come after all. Brick exteriors are great, good insulation is another thing that can keep your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. A few years ago we had foam insulation put into our attic and it has helped out a bunch.

Hi guys, sorry for not being around here for a while. I was in a bit of a funk (aka stalling). Better now!
So sad to hear about Jack Layton this morning!! I think he was a great guy, very likeable.
I am on a shopping frenzy right now since I am afraid winter is coming and I am going to run around naked in the snow because nothing fits anymore. Nice problem to have but expensive! I only buy cheap (on sale) stuff right now because I don't know how long I can wear stuff.
I also found that I shop at store now I never dared to enter because I wouldn't fit in anything. My new favourites right now are: SmartSet, GAP, Tommy Hilfiger (mostly for pants & jeans) and Mexx. Oh and a great new find is Joe Fresh. They are a Superstore brand apparently but have a big store in the new mall north of Calgary now. Wow, I am seriously impressed by the prices. I bought a down vest for $35 and a blouse on sale for $5!
Where are you shopping usually?
I am looking for a black knit dress. Something wintery with long sleeves and turtleneck maybe? Any idea where I might find something? I haven't been wearing dresses for so many years I don't even know where to look!!!
Have a great week everybody!
Armida
08-22-2011, 04:51 PM
OMG, summer's almost over...
On another note, indeed very sad about Layton. Although I don't really follow canadian politics (I've only lived here two years and US politics made me a cynical toward them) I've heard nothing but good things spoken about him.
Aunty Jam
08-22-2011, 05:20 PM
I guess the type of things you hear depend on who you listen to but I agree... very sad about his passing. Only a month ago he announced the new cancer and that he was stepping down to fight it. He must have been a lot sicker then he let on.
I don't shop much... we don't have the money at all. When I do I tend to follow the sales, I'm not a terribly trendy person, I just wear what I like. I used to like Rietmans but haven't been there in a while.
We actually had one day of summer!!! Yesterday it was 30°c-ish :) That's the warmest it's been all summer. We were camping with some friends and took our dogs down to the lake to cool off. We discovered our newest adoption actually likes to swim :) He'll fetch a frisbee from the water all day long if you let him! Our older dog doesn't like to swim and so he waits for the young guy to bring it back then he steals it! Not very nice but the young one lets him do it. I forsee us spending a lot of time down at the river next year if we get a summer.

Hi everybody, how is it going?
We had a fantastic summer day yesterday, hottest of the year. And I had the day off! Woohoo!
Not so great today though. Rain, 20C drop in temperature and I can almost smell winter. :yikes:
Oh well, what can you do?
Have a great week everybody!

 The September LABOR DAY holiday weekend is upon us; hope all Canadians enjoy it. Many people are closing up their cottages and camps this weekend and the hunters will be here soon.
We are finally moved into our house; the painting took longer than we thought it would. Some of our movers bailed on us once again but thankfully we made it through with DH and three young lads and myself packing & cleaning as they went. Some other friends were at the house on the other end trying to keep things organized for us. It was a bit chaotic, but finally got the big stuff done after 6 hours. Then DH and I and his sister did the rest of the house on Sunday. PHewwwwwwwww ... glad thats overwith .... oh dang, my keyboard is turning everything into french on me and I cant figure out how to get rid of it. arrgh ... àààà
Will have to end this post and hope it goes away ... Rosebud

Well I googled and found out that I could change my character map to WINDOWS WESTERN, and it worked for a while but as soon as I unplugged my laptop and plugged back in the problem came up again; not sure why but then I checked and it was still set to WESTERN MODE, so something is odd. I may find out some day what is causing this; or not ...
Hope you are all having a great long weekend; our weather is a bit cool and damp here right now but the rest of the week is supposed to be fairly nice. WE had turkey and roasted veggies with a light fruit crisp for dinner; gotta have at least one dessert each week, and today is a good day for that.
Have a great Monday ... Rosebud :flow2:

Hi Rosebud, glad to hear things are going well. How are you liking the new place?
It's september and summer has finally arrived here... we're supposed to have record breaking temps for this time of year... almost 30° every day this week. How crazy is that? I don't mind so much since it means I can leave my veggies out in the garden to ripen a bit more... summer was so non-existant up until now my garden is a pretty sad sight. I don't know how I managed it but my grape vines have not only survived the past 3 years but now they're bearing fruit! I can't wait to eat grapes grown in my own garden!
I'm managing to work out more though I still have to work on my eating... I am really really unhappy with the weight I've put back on and I'm not in the shape I was last year. I was pouting at the kitchen table after a run about how dissappointed I was in myself and my husband came along and kissed me on my very sweety cheek "I'm still proud of ya..." he says... aaaaawwwwww..... :D

HI AUNTY ~ We're loving living here in our own house; it is very quiet and peaceful here. The neighbours are all nice too. It does take some time to settle in; I mean getting everything unpacked and set up. We have most of the curtains up; just a couple of blinds to do soon.
I had all the dishes and most of the food in the house when we moved plus most of the small stuff; good thing too. We will be unpacking and soring for some time; gee, I thought I got rid of lots last time, but now I still see lots that I want to dispose of ... so on I go ... ;)
DH is wrassling with his vcr/dvd player; he hasn't played it in a while and it was a new gift for his birthday in the spring. He is trying to recall how to set it up himself; I keep offering to help but he wants to try it himself.
We had awesome weather here today; last 2 days felt like summer indeed and I hope it stays until October. We had some weird weather this summer for sure. Pasta night tonight; put some in the freezer for another time too.
Have a nice summer/fall week everyone ... :D

Hi  Hope everyone out there in Canada is doing well.
We only had one week of summer... We're still at higher then normal temps but no where near the 30° we had last week. I've been doing well with my running... logging 5.5k about 3 times a week. But I need to remind myself to do something on my no running days, even if it is just a bit of wii yoga... I really need to cross train.
Glad all is well in the new house Rose :) My house is also stuffed full of, well, stuff. We have a lot of my parents stuff from when they downsized into an apartment. Every once in a while I get sick of it and get rid of something and that's usually just before my mom asks for it. Good grief!
Do we want to wait for the "official" start of fall for a new thread? Or should we do one now since it is fall in Canada? (I think we should do one now... IMHO)
