Default Does it really matter when you eat?

I'm wondering because I enjoy having a snack at night and usually "save" a couple hundred calories during the day for my night time snack. (I'll usually have 100 calorie popcorn, almonds and cranberries or baked cheetos).
These nightime indulgences never put me over my daily calorie limit. Do you believe that night time snacking has a negative impact on weight loss?

I think it's all about calories and counting them. Look at the guy who lost weight off of the twinkie diet and he never went above 1200 calories or the subway guy. I think it's all about sticking to calorie limits. Who knows I lost weight in the beginning not counting calories so I guess in the end depend on your body and what really works best for you.

I have to have a snack before bed and it isn't just about feeling munchy! My days have been so busy that I sometimes only sit for meals, logging, and bed! So when I do sit down and have a moment to relax the hungry tummy makes itself known. I save a snack for just that reason. Otherwise I wouldn't sleep. I'd lay there thinking about food

From what I have read it doesn't make a bit of difference as long as you stay within your calorie "limit."

I have lost 70 pounds calorie counting and most days I eat a majority of my calories after 6 pm. So have a snack whenever you want!

Thank you all for your input. I remember my mother dieting and not being "allowed" to eat after a certain time. I love nothing more than putting the kids to sleep and savoring my treats!

I think it varies from person to person. If I eat within an hour of bed it does hurt my progress when I am losing. I tend to do better with a big break fast, big lunch and a snack for dinner but that is just me. I think you have to figure out what works for you.

It's way overhyped the whole no eating after 8 pm thing. I can't sleep if I haven't eaten in the hour before bed time.

Bluemonday: I'm the exact oposite, I need food right before zzzz to fall asleep.

I think a lot of people tend to overeat nights and evenings-- we're home, we're not working, our hands are free, we're relaxing. Making food off-limits gets rid of the chance that a planned snack turns into something much bigger.

No. Whatever works. Some don't eat late because their discipline is gone by evening when they're tired; it's easier to stay out of the kitchen than deal with our own conniving rationalizations. I save a yogurt or cheese stick for last thing because it's portion-controlled.

I usually save room in my cals for an evening snack, whether it be 100 cal popcorn, sorbet (like last night), a skinny cow...and I haven't had a problem with continuing to lose. If I go to bed hungry, then I cannot sleep. So personally, I don't believe it has an effect!

My nutritionist actually recommends eating a small snack before bed, and it has improved my sleep (well that and eating enough).

I think the carby snacks set you up for a glycemic response that could make you more hungry the next day - but if it works for you - more power toyoU!

I've not been getting hungry much in general, but I've been sleeping badly, so I'm now trying saving a few calories for a small snack before bed.

Nope, not for me anyway. I often don't eat anything until 1 or 2 pm, b/c I'm not hungry until then; plus mornings are crazy with 2 kids and I'm running around not really thinking of eating. I refuse to eat when I'm not hungry. I loooove eating at night after the kids are in bed and I can properly relax (and know I'm not going to get interrupted 20 times during my meal), in fact I often have a meal at 10 or 11pm. It's never affected my ability to lose, as long as I stick to my calorie range.
