Weight Loss Support - My Summer Smack Down

View Full Version : My Summer Smack Down

05-29-2011, 12:32 PM
I am a sort of newbie, I was a member years ago and drifted off - gaining many, many pounds. After several - ok, more than "several" - weight loss attempts with varying degrees of success due to varying degrees of commitment I am here and ready to change my life.

I always had a lot of success with losing weight in the summer - all the good stuff is in season, there's lots to do, and it's so hot here that you have to wear shorts or die. Those things are pretty motivating!

Tomorrow is Memorial Day and unless I've done my math wrong - which will be seriously embarrassing but cut me some slack, I didn't have a calender on hand - there are 98 days from Memorial Day to Labor Day and I'm going to consider that my time to really hustle and make some changes. It's my Summer Challenge For Myself. I'm planning to take a pic tomorrow and a pic on Labor Day and see what all my best efforts add up to.

Anyone else planning to make this your take-back-my-life summer?

My brief plan outline which is subject to change as needed -

* Count calories and focus on nutrition.
* Avoid trigger foods like pasta and rice.
* No fast food. Yep, NONE. For a whole 98 days. It's a bet I have going with my husband we haven't decided what we win yet if we make it but it's going to be something good.
* Dust off those WATP tapes!
* Keep a food journal!
* Plan ahead!

The last two are so important for me. If I plan ahead, it's smooth sailing all the way. If I don't, if I have to just wing it? Oh, things do come crashing down. And knowing that I have to write down what I eat makes me think more than twice about that handfull of chips or those that cookie.

This is awfully long for a second post but I'm meal planning for next week and making my grocery list for today so I have so much on my mind. I'm exited to get started and see what a difference a summer can make. I hope some other newbies and not so newbies will join me!

I think a 98 day challenge is a GREAT idea. It'll help build healthy habits and it's a goal based on staying on plan for a good length of time!

Just think where we'll all be three months from now! :D

Also it doesn't seem like that long for some reason... counting down the days could be a really exciting thing!

:welcome: back to 3FC! I love this idea to stay on plan for the summer, and you have some fantastic plan outlines there!

05-29-2011, 01:07 PM
Thank you! 98 days really doesn't sound long but three months sounds like FOREVER! So I'm sticking with 98 days!

Also, I really like your Bender!

*taps chin*

I've been working on my weight loss for a little bit here, but I've yet to join a challenge, and I actually think I would like to. Especially since it's a challenge focusing on a length of time. Just stay on plan for 98 days. That's not bad at all.

I'm obviously on plan today, but tomorrow I'd be happy to start the countdown with you =)

PS - I'd love to say Bender likes you back, but you know how he can be! ;)

Awesome! I am off to get myself a tape measure and a notebook and do my shopping for the week so I can be prepared. I need to take a pic, too.

I am trying to make a list of easy meals and snacks so I don't have to think every day - ok, now what? It's so much easier if I don't have to think and make the right choice very stinkin time I need to eat. I need pre-made (by me, in a calm moment when I'm not hungry) choices!

05-29-2011, 05:53 PM
I like the idea of taking a picture on Memorial day and then on Labor day. That sounds like a really good idea.

05-29-2011, 07:48 PM
I'm sorta going for the same thing you are. I've been thinking of this as the summer of changes. Since you're from Louisiana, you know how hot it gets down here in the South. I imagine sitting on my front porch one evening in the fall once the weather cools off and being able to reflect on and take pride in what I've done this summer. Just another thing to think about when I feel like quitting.

05-29-2011, 09:07 PM
Great minds think alike. I am doing a summer challenge too.
My user name 101days, is all about Summer !
You are correct in saying there are 98 days of summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
But , where I live, all the swimming pools open on the Saturday before Memorial Day so I chose 101 days for my goal to lose as much as I can by Labor Day.
Maybe those two extra days will make a big difference.

I chose to do Medifast. I need more structure and since I love to cook I can not be trusted in a grocery store right now.

Hi everyone....I am loving the 98 days idea. I am super serious right now..i go to Cape Cod for the summer and don't want to be heavy on the beach..I have been super strict for the last three days, doing high protein and low carbs..(sort of like medifast)my sister gave me some of her unused medifast products and I brought them to the store and found protein shakes w/ similar nutritional values and bars that were sort of similar too..I also have greek yogurt once a day because it seems like a good protein source and I love it w/ a little fruit..in 3 days I have lost 6lbs, i know a lot was water..but I am so happy and I feel good! hoping to get 15 off by july 1st and then continuing right through the summer..it will be hard but I am determined

05-29-2011, 09:38 PM
I'd say the prize for winning the no fast food bet should be a dinner out at a really high quality fancy restaurant. You can use all the money you saved from not eating fast food, and celebrate not eating crappy, not-worth-the-calories food anymore. :D

05-30-2011, 12:19 AM
I'm totally in... maybe these 98 days will get me to goal!

05-30-2011, 01:15 AM
i'll make it a winter challenge and join you!

05-30-2011, 09:11 AM
sonickel, I guess it can be a getting ready for summer challenge for you!

kuhrisuh, glad to have you!

doopdoop, that sounds like a great idea! We've moved to a new area and there are a lot of places we'd like to try. There's one that's kind of upscale (meaning we'd have to a. get a babysitter for once, b. dress a little nicer, and c. it's kind of pricey) and we haven't been yet.

jkf22, I hope you enjoy your time at the beach!

101days, it's funny we thought of the same thing and even similar user names! I don't know much about Medifast but since two of you have mentioned it now, I feel I should look it up.

jonco, oh the heat! Already, it's so hot! That's such a great visual to hold onto. I have a big family wedding coming up and I keep imagining myself having an actual SELECTION of dresses to choose from v. another miserable shopping trip where I finally settle for something I hate and feel bad and self conscious the whole time.

SeeImTryin, I'm going to take my pic in a little bit! I'm trying to find something that's semi-fitted so I can tell the difference in three months.

I hope I didn't leave anyone out!

I've got my plan for the day! Of course, being Memorial Day, it's a challenge because I'm going to a cook out. I'm taking (of course) a salad and planning to eat a banana before I go (I find bananas super filling, anyone else?) so I don't show up starving. It's not going to be easy because I find it hard to deal with food pushers but I'll just keep busy AWAY from the kitchen.

I'm also going to fit in the one mile WATP DVD before I go.

Good luck, everybody!!! We can do a LOT in 14 weeks!!!

05-30-2011, 09:37 AM
I'm SO in! This summer is going to change all our lives!!! :D

I tried to get SummerDays as a user name but it was already taken.
Have fun at the cook out ! Remember you are going there to have fun with people...not for the food.

There's a challenge in the Challenge thread called Luscious by Labor Day. Come join us if you want! We're really good at supporting each other and most of us weigh in every Sunday.

Good Luck 98Days and everyone else. This is a great community and I'm sure you'll find all the support and encouragement you could possibly need!

05-30-2011, 04:03 PM
Day 98! (I'm counting backwards. Makes it easier on my brain.) Best of luck, everyone!

05-30-2011, 10:09 PM
I have figured out the magic secret to success - stay outside! You can not eat when it's 97F in the shade! And you'll have no problem drinking allllll your water.

Is it sweltering where the rest of you guys life? Because it is here!!!

05-30-2011, 10:20 PM
I think I'll join you. My goal is to lose at least 30 lbs. Hopefully more like 50.

I will be doing IF... with my eating window being between 3 and 8 PM. And doing some hardcore workouts daily... for at least 10 minutes.

I want to be able to look pretty good for the start of college. :D

05-30-2011, 11:26 PM
I love this idea! I had a great deal of luck losing a bit of weight at the end of last summer - the last time I seriously tried - and I think a big part of it was the fresh delicious food from the farmer's market. Also, I'm just never as hungry in the summer - I think part of it is the heat. I'm hoping to lose as much as I can, and get really set in some good healthy habits, before the end of the summer. Good luck! :)

06-01-2011, 12:05 AM
I love the idea of a summer challenge!! I need some serious motivation when it's sooooo hot out. I'm in!!

06-01-2011, 12:36 AM
Oh my gosh, you guys, staying on any kind of plan is so hard when you never STAY HOME. I'm going to have to be the weirdo with the cooler. Yesterday was Memorial Day and then today I got together with a friend and her kids so we had lunch at her house. I'm trying to make the best choices based on what's available but I'm going to have to stay home some so I can have more control.

06-01-2011, 12:55 AM
Just started a blog for me... hopefully I keep up with this one... :p (it's probably my fifth or sixth I've started... with all I've done two posts... and then caplut. Gone...) It's just the start... but yeah. 100 days of summer (starting day after memorial day...ending three days after labor day... or... two days after you guys finish... whatever... ;) ).

06-01-2011, 09:07 AM
Good luck!

06-02-2011, 10:24 AM
How is everyone? I'm struggling. I have PMS which makes me soooooo tired, not to mention the pain. Yesterday, I sat down to watch a movie with my daughter and slept through the whole thing, then I went to sleep at 9, which is about three hours earlier than usual and I could still take a nap right now.

Also, it is so HOT! It was 103 when I went out to the Post Office yesterday and my brother tells me it was 109 when he was coming home from work. IT IS ONLY JUNE!

I will say this for the heat - it is impossible to over eat or eat heavy food when it's this dang hot.

How are you guys doing?

06-02-2011, 11:09 AM
HI All,

Can I join this challenge? I love the idea of 98 days. My goal is to eat around 1500 calories per day. I already love to exercise so that is not a problem. My other goal is to make sure that the 1500 calories consist of filling nutritious foods.

I started on May 19th at an uncomfortable high (for me) of 143 lbs. I have been on the plan for about 2 weeks and today I weighed in at 140.4. A few days ago I had been down to 138.2, but today I started my period and I'm wondering if I am bloated.

My goal is to weigh about 130 by the end of the summer. Anywhere between 133 and 125 would be great. This may seem like it would be easy, but I find this 10 lbs to be harder than anything I've tried to loose before. I am super commited. I am going to do this.

If anyone needs a buddy, please let me know. If not, I'm going to post at (at minimum) weekly here on this board. My weigh ins will be either Wed or Thurs and I will report no later than each Friday.

:) Rebecca

Hi! This is a pretty "loose" challenge so whatever you're doing, you're welcome to join us!

I think it's harder to lose weight when you're closer to your ideal weight. I can (vaguely...) remember being in the 150s and trying to make that last dip from 150 to 145 was a full time job!

06-04-2011, 09:48 AM
Hi everyone how is your summer so far?
Are you melting?

06-04-2011, 10:29 AM
I really like this idea! I think I'm gonna start a 90 day challenge! This is very inspiring!

06-04-2011, 10:39 AM
I know I'm a little behind but I'd love join! Starting now until labor day.. haha!

06-04-2011, 11:19 AM
Hi new ladies!!!

My week has been all over the place. I have tried really hard to at least journal what I'm eating but it's been such a busy week. If I could just STAY HOME I could have a little more control!

Also, I'll be out of town all of next week so wish me luck and keep our thread going! I'm going to weigh in on Monday and I guess I'll tell you guys about it when I get back. My plan is to take my journal and do the best I can, which is probably going to involve a lot of Lean Cuisines and salads (I hope). After I get next week behind me, I'm going to try to post daily on this thread - I think having to fess up at the end of day will keep me on track!

I have not exercised at all. It's a combination of not being home and it's SO DARN HOT! It was over 100 several days last week. ALREADY!

How are you all doing? Don't let our thread die while I'm gone and I hope everyone has a great weigh in coming up!!!

06-04-2011, 04:11 PM
I logged my weight today because I won't be online tomorrow.

06-04-2011, 06:00 PM
i am definitely in. i actually started my diet after memorial day and i'm already down 10lbs. let's support each other and burn off them pounds together! :)

06-05-2011, 12:45 AM
That's awesome! Congratulations!

06-05-2011, 01:11 AM
I'm in too.

My goal is to lose between 12 and 18 lbs over the next oh roughly 90 days.
Exercise more--More yard work, ride my bike more, and maybe take dance lessons.
Keep an exercise, food and weight journal.

06-10-2011, 05:49 PM
Hello! Anyone out there! I'm back, I can see I was...missed?

It is NOT COOL tying to lose weight on someone else's menu so I will be happy if I broke even this week. I still have a thing tonight and a busy weekend but at least I'm home and I'm the boss.

Also? Being fat in this heat is THE SUCK.

I spent this week in my home town catching up with some of the girls I've known since kindergarten. The difference between those who have taken care of themselves (whether they're fat or thin) is just so huge. Some of us look a good 15 years older than others. I'm certainly a lot more interested in eating for health and looks than I was a week ago. When you're fat, it's easy to think fat is your only "looks" issue but a crappy diet does a number on your skin and hair, too. Not exercising or getting enough sleep doesn't do any favors for even the thinnest of us. I guess I've hit that age when everything matters.

06-16-2011, 12:36 PM
Helloooo? Anybody out there?

I started on Memorial Day (May 30) and my first marker is the first day of summer (June 21). I set a pretty ambitious goal of ten pounds and I think I'm going to hit it! :crossed:

My next marker after that is July 4th and I'd be happy to lose another five in the two weeks between first day of summer and July 4th.

After that is the long stretch from July 4th to Sept 5th - Labor Day Nine weeks. My daughter starts school sometime in mid August (doesn't that just suck?) and when I know that, I'll add a marker between the 4th and Labor Day.

I tried counting calories but it's hard to keep track of everything, all the time, especially when I'm never home AND that's a little too wide open. I need some limits. And I know that when I get something like bread, rice, pasta...it's hard for me not to have one more scoop or just another tiny scoop. And then another and another and another and the next thing I know, I'm miserable and full and bloated. Best to avoid those altogether for now. So I'm doing my variation of low carb. It has worked well for me in the past and I feel good when I eat this way.

Hope everyone is still out there!

06-16-2011, 07:03 PM
I'm a little over a week into my 90 day challenge and i feel great!

06-17-2011, 09:15 AM
That's wonderful! And congratulations on your stats, you're doing so well!

I finally weighed this morning and I'm down five pounds! I'm so excited that I can show a loss already when I finally get my ticker!:dizzy:
