I've wondered this for... for forever. I'd love to know if this phanomina is created by weight, exercise, or genetics, but I would love to know how to obtain it. (I don't even know what forum section to put this in because it might be diet or exercise, or something else completely.)

Right now, my butt looks more like (nude-from-the-back warning) this (http://dothejanefonda.files.wordpress.com/2007/03/180px-vintage_photo_nude_woman_2.jpg), but I want to know if I can go to that, to something more like her's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:A_woman_with_a_suntan_waring_a_bikini_%281%29 .jpg). Does anybody know?

I'm guessing quite a few lunges and squats would help :)

04-18-2011, 01:42 PM
Lunges and squats (preferably with weights) will help. Running also helps the butt.

04-18-2011, 01:43 PM
Ughhhhh it takes sooo many squats!!!!

04-18-2011, 01:44 PM
I think genetics has a lot to do with it. You can "lift" what you have with lunges and squats, (sorry if thats is a bit off, of what you are looking for I did not look at pics cause I am at work :))

Lunges, walking lunges, squats, step-ups - with weights definitely help. Deadlifts can help I believe. Running is also good.

I also like this article (http://stronglifts.com/why-you-should-always-squeeze-your-glutes/) about squeezing the glutes during deadlifts and squats.

04-18-2011, 02:15 PM
Good one Shannon, I had forgotten deadlifts, they are helpful for the butt. Squeezing the glutes during various exercises is important to get maximum benefit from the exercises. It will also help with core strength some since it is almost impossible to get a really good glute squeeze going without tightening your core. I liked the article and it makes some excellent points. I do a body pump style weight class and one of the cues that the teacher is always using is to say "booty" all the time to remind us to squeeze. We even squeeze our glutes during crunches because it causes a tilt to the pelvis and helps work the lower abs.

I find the first butt prettier to be honest :D
If you talk about the gap between the legs, depending on your hip bone you might never have one unless you go anorexic or have plastic surgery. If your hip bone is narrow the gap isn't healthy to be there.
Like the other ladies said excersize in the area might help. Remember also that waist excersizes can change the way the butt looks.

I'm loving these tips :) Did not know that squeezing the glutes when doing crunches affects your lower abs, will definitely give it a try. A friend of mine who has a rear much like in the second pic says using a stepper is really good.

I also like the first butt better. LOL!

But, I DO like the gap between the legs. I guess I can't have it all. :P

Sorry I don't have any butt tips but it seems you've gotten lots of good info. :-)

Back extentions- you lean over then pull your upper body back up and squeeze your butt muscles google back extentions

I think both bottoms are lovely! I think my answer is "buy the right swimsuit!"

I'm also betting on a lot of squats and walking in a way that uses the butt muscles.

04-18-2011, 08:12 PM
I'd totally take either butt!

04-18-2011, 08:26 PM
I'd totally take either butt!

Same here! I'd take ANY butt, to be honest -- since I don't even seem to have one. Hahaha.

04-18-2011, 09:06 PM
Ummm I hate to say this but I think the first butt is far more attractive. If I recall correctly I have seen that pic used to demonstrate a perfect hip to waist ratio which makes people look the most attractive to men the world over. The second pic just looks a very skinny chick. :/

04-19-2011, 12:55 AM
I'd take either in a heartbeat ..... my dh has just said no question he likes the first one .... but apparently mine is better than both of them!! I like the way he lies :)

I think the butt is very much a case of genetics ..... but I've been doing lunges, squats and lots of cardio .... and I think it has helped a little .... but nowhere close to the desired pic or the one that is not so desired ...

Good luck :)

I don't think the butts are really that different. IF you uncrossed the legs on the first one, added a tan, and a bathing suit that rides up, it'd probably look really similar. There's just slightly more toning on the second but the first isn't a flat butt at all either...

04-19-2011, 08:45 AM
I see a bit of a weight difference between the two, I'd say the only difference is that in the second picture she's skinnier.

I dream to have thighs that don't rub together when I walk. Hopefully it's achieveable because I come from a line of women who have always had wide hips, the fat just sticks to my upper thighs before anywhere else, they're such a god awful shape, Sigh!

04-19-2011, 09:02 AM
if you have a wide hip you can get a gap with losing weight. So wide hips is a plus there (also for childbirth but that is another story):)

No. 2 makes me shift in my seat in sympathy because of the wedgie she's getting from that bikini bottom. Lord help me, I want to reach into the photo & pull that thing back where it belongs.

Then I want to find the artist who did the airbrushing on her backside & I want him or her to follow me around throughout my lifetime during all my naked and near-naked moments.

And then I want to rage & pound my fist against my desk at the utter unfairness of genetics & the chain of ancestors who gave me my flat @ss.

04-19-2011, 10:39 AM
For people with my genetics, it's the same as boobs - butt implants.

I agree that it's more a matter of how thin you wanna be. The second model is just thinner.

My entire chain of thoughts exactly.

I would take either of those bums. I have a gap between my legs which I do like, but my butt is soooo flippin flat. It was flat when I was overweight, and it's flat now...just less jiggly. Now that I'm thin, I don't have a butt at all, I have a crack at the top of my legs. I could probably lift/tighten it a bit with zillions of crunches, but quite frankly, I don't care that much. It looks decent in jeans, my husband has never complained, and I don't need to impress anybody else. It is what it is, I'm not going to spend excessive energy trying to sculpt my butt (or any part of my body).

That said, for Bum #1 to transform into Bum #2, she would need to lose some fat (NOT saying Bum #1 is fat, but her body fat % looks like it's a bit higher than the leaner Bum #2). So lose some body fat % to appear leaner, and then run, do endless crunches, squats, etc, get a spray on tan, and a ride up bikini. And stand with her legs uncrossed.

hamstring curls, swimming with good form (flutter kick is from the hip, not the knee) and flip turns, and running all help. Hamstring curls are awesome, actually. Hard work, one of my favorites; they help with glutes, core, and hamstrings and yield results fairly quickly. Just don't overdo or you'll pull a hamstring.

Anyone can have some of my butt of they want?? I have the biggest butt of all the white girls I know, but it's not a nice one! I'm actually quite self conscious of the way my spine curves inwards but then my butt-shelf sticks out, I like to keep my cellulite there.

04-20-2011, 07:37 AM
Here are the differences I see:

~The first model is paler, the second tan, and wearing a low rise bathing suit bottom. It definitely affects the way things "look" even though they are not really all that different.

~The second model seems to be maybe 5 pounds thinner than the other...it just makes a slightly more angular look through the shape of the waist and hipline.

My genetics give me more of the waistline/torso of the tan chick...and the butt of the first chick. I get the thinner, leaner torso...but the rounder softer butt. Lunges, squats, 20-25 miles a week, and 11 years of dance don't make it a skinny chick butt...it just made it smaller and more lifted/rounder.

saef, you crack me up! You have a great sense of humor. Ever consider writing a book? Also, has anyone ever told you that you resemble the actress Debra Winger? She was in "An Officer And A Gentleman" ,"Terms of Endearment" and many others.
Back to the butt question. I agree with the hamstring curls, lunges and squats. Also try a treadmill at a higher incline like 10%. Genetics do play a big part though. Poor girl in photo 2! Maybe she can't afford a new swim suit bottom that covers her entire rear. I think we should all pity her.

04-20-2011, 12:08 PM
I have a huge area where theoretically there should be an arse. But then, genetics... I'll put it behind me and move on.

04-20-2011, 04:05 PM
Ummmm, I'd be THRILLED with either butt! I am an apple shape with no butt. I liken it to a potato with toothpicks sticking out... I have hated that fact for years, but with exercising I've started to see a tiny butt back there. LOL I will always be larger up top no matter what - I just have to become okay with that... someday. Or, I could get butt implants - do they do hip implants as well? :D :D :D

Kettlebell swings with a hip thrust and butt squeeze at the end!

Also shows how to make a cheap at home version. :)

I'm a fan of the first butt, too. Both are nice, just different, and I think genetics has more to do with it that almost anything. Lunges, squats, and dead lifts are all great ideas for getting some lift and nipping in the thighs, but so much of it is just how we are programmed to put on fat. You may just carry more flesh in your rear, and that's okay :)

04-21-2011, 01:11 AM
I do martial arts, and do lots of kicking, squats, lunges (have been training for 5 years now), and still genetics dictates that I have a flat butt (flat across the bottom line)

I think both butts are fairly similar, its just the swimsuit and tan that makes the second look more toned! and I would take either any day .. LOL

04-21-2011, 01:12 AM
and now just to be fair, can you find some gorgeous male butts, I could really do with some eye candy (gotta have some candy on this diet.. heheh)

04-21-2011, 04:59 PM
I'll admit I don't see much difference between the two aside from a few lbs and a tan. I'd take either at this point. I have a HUGE butt which never bothered me until I became so overweight. It's "hangy" I think and I can actually feel the weight pulling on my back. I'd just like it to be smaller and more firm than it was when I was thin the last time. I like having a big butt...just not so saggy looking.

04-21-2011, 06:20 PM
Meh, it's all aesthetics. Jlo is my a**piration! :D

Personally, I find the first one you posted more attractive but if you no like and want higher and firmer lunges and squats are the way to go.

04-21-2011, 07:45 PM
I also think they look similar, the first one just has higher body fat and possibly different bone structure. The second chick looks like she is small boned, the other might be more medium/large boned.

Another butt/lower back exercise: Superwoman. Lie facedown with your arms and legs stretched outward, then draw them closer toward each other while squeezing your glutes. If you go to the Women's Health mag website and search "superwoman," there's a link to a diagram and some alternative versions. It's not as easy as it looks!

04-25-2011, 12:33 PM
Physically, my butt is definitely my best asset and I attribute it to a combination of kickboxing, the stepper, and genetics.

04-26-2011, 04:59 PM
To answer your question: put on the same bikini bottom! The butts, to me, look the same. You should be pleased to be blessed with your bottom!

The exercise suggestions are correct in that they target the glutes, lower back and hammies but keep in mind that, like with any type of ab work, you will be strengthening the muscle underneath the fat. We all have six packs underneath. We all have awesome butts underneath, too. Without fat loss, your butt may get bigger because of the muscle growth.

Also, I want to note, like others already said, genetics play a role, too. I have 15% body fat at age 41. I have always had stretch marks on my hips (from puberty) and a tiny bit of cellulite on my buttocks. Genetics gave them to me and no amount of exercise will change it. Luckily, I understand that and just don't care.

Hopefully, you can learn to love your shape, and whatever genetics you have and let it go.
