I drink at least a litre of coke zero/diet coke a day. Today I have drank 3 litres of the stuff. Its zero cals (well near enough) But I feel like I'm replacing water with it.

What do you think? How bad is diet coke/coke zero for you? Should I give this habit the shove?

I like the stuff.

I plan to continue drinking diet pop in its various manifestations for the rest of my life. I don't drink 3 liters of the stuff in one day, that does seem to be a bit excessive, but I will cheerfully drink a couple of cans of diet coke or pepsi every week or so.

I'm sure it is not good for me, but there are worse habits I could have. :D Should you abandon your habit? That's purely up to you. :wave:

It's bad. For a whole mess of reasons. But MAN I love the stuff too. I will never give up coke zero no matter what. So lately I won't buy 12 packs because I'll just drink all of them. Now I keep them out of the house and one buy ONE once in a while when I'm out and about. Keep only water at your place and you'll drink it!

That is so true. My parents never allowed me to have fizzy pop when I as little and its like I've discovered this stuff and just want it all!! I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, and I no longer eat really unhealthily. I think today has just been a really weird day. I think I'm going to cut back alot but I still love it. I can't stand the full sugar coca cola!! Its far too sweet. But I love diet coke and coke zero!

Holy crap. That reminds me!

I went shopping on my lunch break and when I went to check out there was this woman already there paying. She kept saying "No, I want more" "How many can you give me?" She sounded like she was trying to score crack. LOL

I couldn't see her cart and had no idea what she was referring to. Finally she said "I was 40 cases!" So they gave her a raincheck. As she was walking out, I finally realized her cart was overflowing (literally!) with diet pepsi!

Now, I like a diet coke or whatnot but I thought to myself "She really must hate her kidneys!" Tad off topic but I had to share. :D

I pretty much gave it up since the caffeine was making me feel bizarre, and I felt that I was replacing water with it as well, which meant feeling dehydrated.

I really wish we had Crystal light etc in the UK, I love water but sometimes it's rather boring. We have bottles of flavored water but I find it hard to find the sugar free versions and they're not worth the 100 cals per bottle.

And serendipty: I can't stand flavoured water. Its vile. And not worth it at all. I'd rather plain tap water!!

I got this stupid thing in my head today and its gonna sound like I'm crazy but I haveto ask.... Does it dye your insides? Cos its such a dark colour!!

I would think it more affects your colon/waste.

If you've ever had too much grape Crystal Light for example, the dye turns turns your poo green. True story! ;)

I too confess to being a diet popaholic.
In fact, I regularly drink 4-6 litres a day. I have recently cut back drastically. I found that diet pop played with my hunger hormones - I always felt hungry after drinking it. Now, I have a glass of water first, 1 glass of pop, and then another glass of water to balance it out. If I'm really thirsty, the water will take care of it. I can't stop cold turkey, but I'm going to make sure I work for the pop! Now I drink for true thirst, and I'm not always hungry either.
Someone once tried to scare me out of pop by saying that it turns to formeldahyde in your tummy. I just told them that I was being perfectly preserved/pickled form the inside out, and that I was planning on saving money on my embalment! ;)

I drink one can of soda a day. When I started this journey I switched to caffeine free diet soda - what? Take out all the good stuff? I don't need to sugar (prefer it without anyway) and the caffeine makes me hungry. I just love the flavor, so my midday treat is one can. I never have more. The rest of the day I drink water and soon as it warms up, unsweetened, half herbal/half decaf black iced tea.

3 liters is excessive though... so try to treat it more like a treat - especially because of the caffeine.

google uses for soda... I have tried a couple of the uses and so far it has worked better then draino and liquid plumber to declog drains as well as far better then any cleaning product to clean a disgusting tub and toilet... Ill drink it every once in awhile but i can imagine the havoc its causing my innards so its a rare treat

Oh god, I know exactly where you're coming from. For some reason I detest coke zero, but have an all-out addiction to diet pepsi. To make matters worse, I discovered those blue and pink diet mountain dews they sell now and am obsessed with them. I know how bad they are for me, but it's SUCH a hard thing to give up, as sometimes I depend on that sugar-free caffeine to keep me sane.
The joke around my house is that they're gonna have a diet-soda intervention for me. Also that if you cut into my veins, a brown cola-colored liquid would spurt out.
I just try to limit myself one or two a day, which is pretty bad, but I would and could drink 24 in a day if I didn't limit them.

I think you should look at the ingredients, what's inside.
If you see cola as a drink to make thirst go away, that's bad.
If you drank that stuff, you eat while you actually drink.

It's better to drink teas or mineral water to quench thirst.

I used to drink 2-3 litres of diet coke a day. I knew that it was bad for me, just like the smoking. I quit both May 25 2009. The blinding headaches from the sudden caffeine withdrawl really helped take my mind of of the effects of nicotine withdrawl-LOL. And yes it made me gain weight even faster for a while as I substitued other stuff for the pop and smokes:( (and I missed the fizziness of the soda). I now drink mostly water and herbal tea, and club soda, sometimes with a lemon or lime wedge- I love it for the fizz. When I tried a diet coke awhile ago I ended up pouring it out, it was revoltingly (is that a word??) sweet. Benefits?? No aspartame and the bad things it does to my body, no caffeine and the bad things that it does to my body, and believe it or not , the softest skin that I have had in years!!!!!!!!~ :)

I've decided that I'm going to just stop drinking coke zero/diet coke. Stop this week, but I'll drink what I like on holiday. :D

i really wish i would stop, but my mom buys a million liters for my brother (who drinks them like crazy) and when i go to the kitchen they're just there, waiting for me! then i tell myself it's okay because it's zero calories, but i still know it's bad.. i can't help, i'm an addict too. as i sit here sipping my coke zero.

DONT DO IT!

I drank pepsi max (3ltrs a day) for over 10 years! my bladder and kidneys are stuffed :(, I constantly suffer from urge incontenience and other issues.
It may be cal free (my excuse was that) but the aspartine (though I don't believe the full on hype about it, i do believe it is a chemical and our bodies do get effected by over and continued use)
I have servere muscle pain when I do anything, and have had 1/2 my right achielles removed as my muslce was dying! from the centre out, my left achielles has started deterioting also. My dr said It is very possible its from the pepsi max, aspartine and high doses of caffiene, he said it can effect your muscular system.

I would give up anything to take back those 10 years and have a normal life again.

I still love pepsi max, but now am offically 108days free of it (was my new years resolution, in hopes of helping my issues) My urge incontience though not magically better is seeing some improvement ! (YAY) I gave up cold turkey! and for the 3-4 days of headaches and pain, I now feel incredible!

please consider what you are drinking? even though its low cal, it can still harm (and no I am not a doomsdayer, this is coming from my personal experiences :()

Im a pop addict in general. Especially Mt Dew. I can drink any diet flavor, except diet mt dew. Thats the only one i cant stand the Diet taste. Not sure why. Too bad i cant go back to my childhood and drink water and Kool-aid. ;)

I see nothing wrong with it. If you drink it in moderation, you're over 18 and not pregnant or lactating then go for it! I'm a biologist so I've looked into quite a few of the studies and for most people it is completely fine.

Sometimes I feel like something sweet and I have a can of zero and it hits the spot. Alas I am breastfeeding so at the moment its off the menu.

I just to drink a LOT of Diet Rite cola until I read about the phosphoric acid being bad for your bones.

I used to drink coca cola light (I think it is the same you can diet coke in america) a LOT!

I went cold turkey 1 year ago and drank sugar drinks instead and 8 months ago I gave up on soda-pops alltogether. All brands and types.

My reason for doing so wasn't that it is poisonous or something. It obviously isn't or we wouldn't be talking about it. Everything in excess though is potentially harmful to a certain degree. To see this scientifically, what can be harmful about drinking diet coke instead of water:

1st Sweeteners. The body is not a foolish bio-machine. It KNOWS when you cheat it with sweet taste and no calories. So it makes you crave for more. Sweeteners are mildly addictive (it depends on the "user's" temperament also) and offer you nothing except their taste. There has been no serious long term study to see the long lasting effects of sweeteners in a diet. We probably are going to be the living study 30 years from now... I'd rather watch from afar thank you.

2nd Acidity. The acidity of carbonated drinks is usually high. They endanger the health of your teeth, cause and worsen ulcers and change your whole digestive track's ballance. So compared to neutral water you are doing damage.

3rd Phosphorus. Cola drinks have lots. Phosphorus is essential but should be consumed at about the same doses with calcium and vitamin D. Or else you might get calcium defficiency (osteoporosis for us ladies is a serious business).

4th economy. You can actually save LOTS of money by drinking tap water instead of soda. You could be surpised how much money goes into that need. Buy a water filter for your tap and you will see your budget rising.

5th Aftertaste. Sodas leave a bittersweet aftertaste if they have sweeteners, which conveniently only goes away if you drink more of the stuff. Once you stop drinking you'll feel the taste of other foods much stronger.

6th Bloating. Sodas cause bloating... not much to say on this

7th Cellulose. It has been suggested in some studies that carbonated drinks cause more cellulose...

8th Hunger. Carbonated drinks cause hunger, because they lessen the feeling of fullness (through burping, like cooking soda does). So you feel less full faster after a meal if you drink carbonated stuff with it, or after it.

In the end if you HAVE to drink it to feel happy try a can every other day. I think the list above might help :)

I used to drink it pretty much like everybody else -- you get hit over the head with ads since birth and indoctrinated to drink soda but when I started reading how bad it was for you and especially your teeth (yes even diet!) I gave it up without a second glance. Think of how many messages we get to drink soda every day between radio, TV, billboards, point of sale purchase displays or "value meal" packaging (especially with kids -- all the fast food "kids meals" come with soda.) It's to get you hooked. But you can get off of it. I don't miss spending the money or lugging around the cans of diet coke!
