I'm curious. Only share if you want to of course, but a previous post made me think about sizes.

I'm 5'2". At my current weight, the sizes I'm wearing are about 20-22 or 2X. But within that range, I encounter many clothes that just don't fit. I have big boobs, big thighs, wide hips, waist on the smaller side, and it's all compressed into my short frame and means clothes just bang into me sooner than they should.

When I was 24 I weighed about 135 and wore a 12 if it was a relaxed fit, 14 if it wasn't. Six or seven years ago I was down to about 155 and I was barely in a 16.

I occasionally see someone mention clothes sizes and it always seems to me that I'm wearing bigger clothes than they are. A friend who I know for a fact outweighed me by 100 lbs said she was only one size bigger. What gives?

I am 5'3 and I weight roughly 159. I am not sure what size jean I actually wear. Before I had my son I was 130ish and in a size 9. I bought a pair of 13s and they were REALLY tight. Like I couldnt even get them to my thighs. So I tried 15s... they are so big they fall off. So I sucked up my pride and mvoed to the ladies section. Some 12s fit fine. Others are way too tight. 14s are usually too big on me unless they're boot cut. I hate buying clothes. I still wear some of my materiny pants just to feel better. (my son just turned a year old friday) Shirts on the other hand are even worse. I try to buy a large and my boobs are either smashed and my stomach is gross you can see every roll in my back. Its terrible. I get an xl or a 2x and they're better but a little too big. I am thinking about just making my own clothes from now on. :(

I used to be 3XL or 3XLT. Now I'm XL or XLT.

Oh - I suppose this was a question for the ladies. :D

It is so weird how people are all over the map with sizes.

I am 139 currently 5'4", I wear a size 6 on the bottom and a medium on top (some shirts a small though). When I was 233, I was in a 18-20, and a 1X on top. But things didn't fit me well then, I had lots of gapping in the waist. I find now clothes fit me much better.

Right now I'm wearing 1-2X tops and 20-22 pants...and some pants that are 24. Ugh..I remember years ago thinking I was huge at a size 16 lol if I could go back in time I'd slap that me and tell her it's not that bad...yet.

It's probably because your short. Some who is taller can weigh more and still wear smaller clothing.

I'm 5'7.5". At my current weight of 188,I'm wearing size 12-14 pants and M-L shirts. my arms and calves are big which affects my sizes to a certain extend and I don't like things too clingy on my belly because i have some excess skin which i find humiliating. When I was 254 I wore a size 20-22 and i wore XL shirts.

I know my height affects it, but it doesn't explain it away entirely, especially when I look at other short people.

Here's what I don't get: I know where I'm big. What I can't figure out is where I'm small. If I'm a similar height and weight to someone, how can I be in a bigger size? Am I less dense? That seems unlikely.

I usually wear a size 5 jeans (27 in designer jeans, that I really don't own a lot of -- I guess that's inches?) - I'm 5'3" and weigh 133.

I have a size 1 pair of capris that are super loose, and a size 9 that I can't get into unless I used a can of Crisco.

Bust - 37.5inches, waist - 27 inches, hips - 36 inches.

I believe you are mentioning my post! ;)

Well, I too have always been intrigued AND disheartened about height vs. weight vs. sizes….especially pant sizes. I work with a woman whose butt is way smaller than mine if you look at us from behind and we wear the same size. But I also have a flatter tummy (pear shaped) and she has a rounder one (apple shaped). But if you measured us around the hip/butt/abdomen, we’d be exactly the same in inches. I still have the waist gap issue but not as bad as before I had lost weight. Thanks to spring and summer lines, I always go for the pull tie capris! And I have another friend that is in a size 12 (a size bigger than I) but to me she looks very thin because she is about 4 inches taller than I am. And those 4 inches really, really matter!

When I started losing weight it was all about the number of pounds on the scale. Now it’s about clothing size for me. I wish I could go back to pounds because this clothing size thing still makes me crazy!

I weigh about 187 right now, and I am 5'5.5... My pants size seems to be 12-14 right now. I have a B belly, though, and so I have a belly roll that sticks out above the waist of my pants. Because of this, I tend to by tops that are a little bigger.

I haven't been shopping in awhile so my pant size is 24... of course if I wear those pants all the time the are loose, but if I put on a pair I don't wear a lot, then it can be a wee bit tight. I can wear 22/24 tops, but like 26/28 for the bagginess. I have very large arms so it can be tough to find a top that fits well all over as well as bottoms, because I have very large calves as well... and large cankles, feet, hips... head, shoulders, knees and toes lol

oh I am 5'7.5" and heavy set all over, in case I didn't make that abundtly clear ;)

It was your post ShanIAm! I guess I'm more of pear than an apple too, although now that I'm as big as I am, I've got a belly where I didn't used to.

I'm 5'5", at 273, and I'm wearing a size 20 pants and either 14/16 or 18/20 tops. More so the 18/20 since I hate when things cling.

When I was at my heaviest (340) I was a size 26. At my smallest (189) I was a size 14. There's no rhyme or reason to sizes. LOL.

My end goal is to not have to shop in a plus size store or even in the plus size department.

I was just talking about this on our accountability thread. I'm 5'9 and in a 14 pants and a large/medium shirt. I bought my first size 12 bermuda shorts over the weekend and they fit, but they're snug.

When I was first married 10 years ago, I weighed 155 and was a size 8/10. I think sizes must have changed since then. That's just a few sizes away now. It's all :dizzy:.

I don't even know anymore, because sizes vary so much. i swear sometimes i'll take a S, M, and L into the dressing room because i have no idea. but generally i'd say i'm an 8 or a medium at the moment. Usually i'd be more like a 6 (but i have really thick muscular arms, so if it's a tight fitting shirt, the arms will be super tight on me).

Right now I'm buying 11's. I'm 5'3" 165lbs. 38" bust, 29" waist, and 39" hips. I'm between a medium and large top depending on the brand. I tend to carry most of my weight in my thighs.

I'm 5' 8" and an apple. I don't know what my jeans size was when I weighed 360 as it went beyond what I could try on in a store. I remember I was a 24/26 when I was in my lower 300's, and since I've been 285 down through around 250 (my current weight) I've been in a 22/24 (yeah, the past 35-40 pounds has not made a difference in what size I need to buy). But for track pants I'm in a 20, and my shirt size is typically a 2x.

I was 345 pounds and a size 24-26, and now I'm about 210 and a size 14-16 depending. I'm also 5'10 and luckily pretty proportional so pants sizes just fit differently. But I remember a few months ago I went to the Buckle with my best friend and she is the tiniest little thing, and we were going into the fitting room and she pointed at this shirt and goes "I like that, do they have that in my size?" and the lady who was helping us goes, "I'll see." and comes back with a large and goes "Got you the last large!" and Jennie was like "Thanks!!" and i was thinking LARGE? if she is a large now I am NEVER shopping here, no matter how thin I get! Sizes are just weird, I don't put much stock in them with vanity sizing, height, weight, proportions, etc.

sweetsmmer91, Buckle is where I bought my size 9 pants that are actually smaller than a size 5 anywhere else. Ugh!

This topic is very confusing to me. I am 5'4" and I weight 149 pounds but I'm still wearing my size 12 jeans and a large shirt. When will I fit into a 10 or lower? I'd love to get into a smaller size!

Edit: It's confusing because as posted earlier, women can weigh the same and be approximately the same height but wear different sizes. I carry fat in my tush and stomach mostly so I guess that's why I wear a larger size.

I am 5'6, 254 pounds and I wear a size 22. I would say it's because your short. My mom when she was 200 pounds was in a size 14-16, and she's 6 feet even. I'd have been in a size 18 at least at that weight.

I'm just over 5'5", 134lbs & wearing an 8. I think in just a few lbs, I'll be able to wear a 6. They fit now, but leave a bit of a muffin top

When I first started out this summer, I was 161 & in a tight tight 14, even some 14's didn't fit, was def supposed to be in a 16! Even after I lost like 15 lbs, I was wearing the same clothes, but they fit better. I believe when I was even in my mid-low 140's, I was in a 10/12. In the smaller sizes, just a few lbs seems to make a difference in pant sizes.

Like right now, because TOM is due, I'm up a couple lbs and bloated and my 8's don't look that great, so I'm wearing a 10. Even though they're loose, they look better than a little muffin top :) Crazy how just a couple lbs of water weight can make such a difference. I didn't notice that when I was a few sizes bigger

I weigh 134 and TYPICALLY wear a size 4. That said, I have a pair of size 9 pants that are snug on me and will not fit if I gain anything, probably. I have shirts that are small and shirts that are large. I have dresses that are XS and some that are Large. I call my size by what most frequently fits, which is 4 for pants, S for dresses, M for shirts.

I'm 5'6" 138 pounds and wear a size 6 in every brand I have tried on in the last year. I wear a medium top and size 5 undies. 9M shoe... I've been wearing a six every since I hit about 149ish.

At 333 I was in a 3 to 4XL and a size 28 to 30 pant. I carried a lot of my weight in my stomach and butt. 10W shoe

I'm also 5'2". About 196, and I wear a size 16 pant (can squeeze into a 14 but they don't look good. At all.). L or XL in tops.

I *am* smaller than I was on the way up and weighed this much. I'm guessing b/c I work out and eat better. I guess I'd be classified as an hourglass shape.

I've seen other ladies who are the same height and weigh more and they wear smaller sizes. It is frustrating!

im 5'6 and at 130lbs today. classic pear shape with no boobs but wider hips and fatter thighs (and very muscular calves).

wear a size 4 jean/pant, but have to buy the curvy tailored pants or jeans (except jcrew size 4 skinny jeans im wearing now).

size xs, 0 or sometimes 00 skirt and top since my waist and bust are small.

at 125lbs my jean/pant size goes down to 2, but everything else stays the same.

Look at clothing sizes as a way to target what you might be able to fit into. Clothing manufacturers no longer size clothing by a standard of measurements. It's all marketing.

Lets say Clothing Co. A makes a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly and they call it a size 22. And Clothing Co. B makes a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly and they call it a size 2x. And Clothing Co. C makes a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly and they call it a 2. All the same measurements, just calling it different "sizes" to market it for the target audience they hope to sell to.

It is even difficult to find clothes that fit perfectly, and then have that size be consistent throughout the entire clothing line. Buy what fits you the best and have things altered to fit well. Nothing makes you look good like clothes tailored to your body.

Isn't it frustrating? At 196, I'm no where near a 16. I've kept stats on fitday for years off and on and I strangly enough had my measurements when I was about kelli21's weight, and I'm only one inch shorter. I was at 163, bust 41", waist 34", hips 43". WAY bigger.

I stand by my original comment: NOT FAIR! :)

Yep, it'd definitely crazy. ;) I'm 5'6" and I can give you 5different sizes I've been in:

Highest weight: 225 (higher than that and I was still in maternity clothes)
Tops XL-XXL
Bottoms Snug 16's

Current weight: 192
Tops M-XL
Bottoms 12-14's (probably closer to a 12, though)

Prepregnancy weight: 175
Tops M-XL
Bottoms 10-12's

College weight: 155
Tops M-XL
Bottoms 8-12's

Lowest weight: 140
Tops M-L
Bottoms 8

My two low weights happened 6-14 years ago so I have a feeling that some of the clothes are more vanity sized now. I'm pretty sure the 12's I fit into at 155lbs are not the same that I currently fit into! :dizzy:

Oh, and all the sizes from when I was 175lbs and below I was an hourglass (prepregnancy), now I'm somewhere between a banana and and hourglass because my belly's so much bigger. :(

5'5, 132 and a size 4-6. 4 is a bit small, 6 is a bit too baggy, my hips were permanently changed after this baby so my hips are around 2" wider. I was a 4 before (and I think around 14 when I started my journey 7 years ago at 163!!!!)

190 lbs - 14

So much is about height and frame size. Shorter people with smaller frames usually need bigger sizes for the same weight because there's just less bone to hold up all the fat.

I'm 5' 6.5 (so much in the middle I don't know what to call myself - 5'6" or 5'7"). I have a VERY large wrist, 7.25" (with no fat around it).

At 275 I wore a getting tight 20W.

At 255 I wore a getting lose 20W

At 225 I am in between a 16W and an 18W in most brands.

My measurements are: 45 38 47.

Im about 170 pounds and I wear a size 8. I have a large quite muscular frame and am very proportionate. No one believes I weight this much, and I sometimes feel angry and annoyed that I weigh so much even thought Im happy with the way I look when I look in the mirror. The only time my BMI has been bordering on the healthy range was when I was 16 and had an eating disorder and looked way too skinny. Sorry about my rant!:)

We'll it's confirmed: I'm huge. ;) Seriously. Even you other shorties out there at my weight wear smaller sizes.

Oh well, we can't aspire to any one elses body, just do the best we can with the one we have. If I can get back to where I don't have to shop at plus size stores/departments, even if that has to happen and a much lower weight than most of you, I'll be happy. :)

And BTW, I hear all you mamas out there. My pre-pregnancy weight was 165, nothing to be too proud of, but a lot better than where I am right now. Back then, at that weight, I didn't have much of a belly. I got down below that, about 155, at one point after I had my son, but the belly's never quite the same.

180 (apparently, i wasn't 178 like i thought--so that's my starting point!), 5'7", and a 12 or 14 (depends what store/fit) and a M or L in shirts (again, depends what store/fit).

very interesting to hear the variations!

Hmmmm... sizes range so differently, different brands, different stores, same weight/height for some people yet STILL wear "different sizes"... it's a conundrum!!!

When I was 138 about 5 years ago, I was a size 6-8. At 152, I was a 10-12.

CURRENTLY: I am 5'3.5" tall (short!) & 170 and wear a 14 in jeans, and usually a large on top. Bra size is 38C, but since I've lost from 184 to 170, my bras are getting a bit too loose & I'm wearing them on the "last hook", so I may drop down to a 36C. My jeans have always been 14s - BUT, I really SHOULD have been wearing 16s (esp at 192!!!) it's just that I completely refused to buy any larger sizes, & kept stuffing my fat *** into the 14s, LOL! :dizzy:

So I'm COMFORTABLE in my 14s now, which some are already a bit loose... I hope to lose another 10 pounds & be back in my 12s by mid-late summer, and another 10-15 pounds lighter & comfortably wearing 10s by Xmas time. (In my most flamboyant dreams, I'm 135 & back to 6-8 sizes... :goodvibes )

I can wear crazy-sized tops. Currently, most are large. But I have plenty of mediums, some smalls, and a few X-large that fit me nicely.

Women sizes are just CRAZY, and that's my final conclusion. :D

zoodoo - Do you do any strength training at all? Many times the difference is because of the amount of muscle a person has. 5 pounds of fat tissue is a lot bigger than 5 pounds of muscle. If you aren't already doing so, I suggest you start strength training. Look for a body pump type class in your area or check out The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I do both body pump style and regular lifting, in February I only lost 1.4 pounds but I lost 3.25 inches.

FitGirlyGirl- I've just gotten started this time around, and I'm barely getting any cardio yet, much less strength training, which has always held less appeal for me. I'm sure it's a good idea, but it's not something I can get excited about.

There's no telling what I'm like now, but when I was young, I was VERY muscular. Short, stocky, strong as an ox. I'm still pretty strong, but I think it's more because I know how to use my whole body to do things that other people try with their arms only.

I agree - it's all your shape, build, percentage of muscle/toning, etc.

I'm a short 5'3" and 243. I'm VERY pear shaped - wide hips, big butt and thighs, small up top. I wear a 42B bra, which is an extremely difficult size to find. I can barely fit into some of my 22 bottoms - have some 24s. Most jeans/pants end up being too long for me at that size. 20 works in tops sometimes, but if it goes much lower than my waist, I need a bigger size to fit around my hips. My sister is 5'10" and wears size 20. She has the opposite problem, though, of not being able to get pants and jeans long enough.

I am 5'6". 142 lbs currently. I also have several sizes in my closet. Tops are small and some x-small. I wear 4-6 in jeans, size 4 in dressier pants/slacks and skirts. Size 5 underwear. Shoes are 7.5, medium width.

When I was at my heaviest (235-240), I wore size 18-20W jeans, XL and 1X tops, Size 11 underwear, and my shoes were 8-8.5 wide width.

Maybe if I went out, depending on the brand, I'd find a 14 or 12 that fits right. Tops...totally depends on the shirt. Anything from a M to XL.

when i'm 160, i'm an 8 on the bottom.
i'm currently a 12. 18 lbs to lose to go down 2 dress sizes. meh. no big deal.

the hips/legs/butt are always too big. but my belly button/"f.u.p.a." is always too tight & is impossible to breathe; literally chokes me. i have a flappy man gut; majorly. but it does go down progressively as i get smaller.

as for my top, i have broad shoulders/ribs/no breasts. so, med or large for the frame. but small for the girth/width. haha. "halffull:

I'm 5'5 and 136lbs. I am generally a 4 or 6, although today I am wearing a pair of size 2 jeans from the Gap sooo a bit vanity sized :)

At 160-166, I wore a size 10.

I find that pants from the Gap are smaller than pants I get elsewhere. I have 18s from many different stores, and I can still only fit into a 20 from the Gap. I can also fit into a size 16 from Old Navy.

Anyways, I'm 5' 2.75" and I wear anywhere from a tight 16 to a really loose 20. Most of my 18s are loose on me right now. In tops I generally wear an XL, or a 14/16. Bra size is "supposedly" a 38D, but I actually can't fit in anything smaller than a 40DD. These girls just don't measure right!

I think it also depends on the cut... I find the Long and Lean jeans to run a bit large for how I am built, so I wear a lower size in those - not too sure about all the other cuts and I don't think I have any jeans from Old Navy atm.

Sizes are enough to drive us all crazy :dizzy:
