Sometimes I forget why I'm actually doing this, and I've been making a mental list of "silly" reasons. Here are some of mine (some I mentioned in my intro):

*I want to be able to fly on vacation without having to ask for a seatbelt extender.
*I want to be able to shop in any store, without having to go straight to the "fat lady" section.
*I don't want my young SD to refer to me as her "fluffy mama" and her mom as her "skinny mama".
*I don't want people to look at my hot, fit DH and wonder what he sees in me.
*I want to be able to swing on the porch swing without worrying about breaking something.

What are your reasons?

Hi there! And...Welcome! I always found the reasons why someone choses to get healthy interesting, and posting them takes a lot of courage. Many of us want to lose weight for the wrong reasons, I enjoyed reading yours, and can relate to a few of them! I'm already at goal, but my reasons were:

*My daughter called me fat once, I didn't like it, and didn't want her doing it again.

*I didn't like feeling "judged" by people when I ate in public.

*I didn't like feeling embarassed to go out or meet people, or feeling that my family and friends were embarassed of me.

*I didn't like the unhealthy relationship I was in, and it was keeping me fat.

*I didn't like being described as overweight, or fat.

I want to lose weight because:

1) I want to be healthy for myself and children
2) I want to instill good and healthy eating habits in myself and children
3) I want to set a good example to my children
4) I want to be in regular size clothes
5) I dont wanna have to worry if I will fit in a seat or not
6) I want to go to the amusement park this Summer and be able to fit in the rides with my kids
7) I have always been fat
8) I want to FEEL sexy
9) I want to be able to walk a long ways without getting out of breathe
10) I dont want to feel like people are staring at me because Im huge
11) I dont wanna be lazy anymore
12) I want to chase my kids around, jump on the trampoline with them, etc.

I'm with Guam. These always interest me and it's a good reminder of where I've been.


I didn't like fearing I wouldn't fit on a roller coaster.
I couldn't tie my shoes comfortably.
My two best friends and I (also morbidly obese women) were packed in like sardines at the symphony. It was so bad we waited until everyone was seated and then spread out.
I had a harder time getting into and out of a bathroom stall.
Cimbing the stairs one time was exercise.
It hurt to stand at the sink to do dishes.
I had plantar fasciitis and I knew it was weight related.
I hated that every doctor visit was probably weight related.
My BP was 155/105.
I was pre-diabetic.
Mostly though, I was sad and felt no self-worth. I wasn't suicidal, but death seemed a pleasant thing and I was in such a bad mental place I thought my kids wouldn't care.

What a great idea!

-I want to be able to shop in regular stores. Big girl clothes cost more money, IMO.
-I want to stop avoiding mirrors.
-I want to be able to ride roller coasters with my kids when they are old enough.
-I want to be more social. I tend to stay away from new people and situations because I am embarrassed of the way I look.
-I want to be healthy so that I can enjoy my family and my life as long as possible.
-I want my husband to think I am hot. Lol!
-I want to be a good example for my children.
-I want to run!

MAIN REASONS:


Help manage my PCOS/IR/Hypothyroid/Syndrome X!
Not be the fat mom, keep up with kid better.


BENEFITS

Health, of course, and enjoying play time with kid more.
Cuter clothes don't hurt. :)
Crazier sex with DH doesn't hurt either. :)

Lets See...

1) Because I don't want to be an embarrassment to my children
2) Because I hate how I look in pictures and in the mirror
3) Because I want to feel sexy
4) Because I want to lead by example for my family
5) Because I feel like people look at me and think "no wonder she's fat" if I dare to put ANYTHING in my mouth in public
6) Because I want to feel well and energetic, rather than unwell and lethargic
7) Because I want to shock the $#!+ out of my family and inlaws the next time they see me (we see them about once a year).
8) Because I am Insulin Resistant/Pre Diabetic
9) Because I have arthritis in my knees


10) Because I hate that people assume that since I am fat, I am lazy. I was walking to the store in my town with my kids (5 and 6 years old, and not at all overweight). It was -26C out, but the store is only 2 blocks away. A "friend" pulled up in her van and asked "where are you going?" so I told her that we were going to the store. So, I watch her drive to the store (there's only 1 in my town). When we got to the store, and we got inside, one of my girls said "WHEW", and the store clerk said "It's cold outside hunh?" and my daughter replied "Yes, and we walked!!" It wasn't a complaint but a statement of fact. The friend who had stopped to ask where we were going replied "yeah, but walking is good for you", to which I somewhat snidely replied "Yeah, I know, the girls play on the Wii every day, and I walk at least 2 miles with it daily"....her reply was "Oh...I should do that too". She didn't offer us a ride because she decided that since I was fat, i was lazy and never did anything healthy for myself, and used the excuse that it was "good for me" to walk...she lives as far from the store as I do (it's a TINY town) but drove.

Sorry #10 was so long, but it REALLY irks me what people assume!

I'll have more fun moving my body
It'll be easier to backpack and hike
My knees will be so much happier
I'll be an active older person
I'll look better
I'll have more energy
I'll reduce my chances of heart disease/diabetes
I'll enjoy wearing better-fitting clothes
I'll have proof of my self-discipline
I'll have an easier menopause
I'll enjoy a longer life to share with my partner
I'll feel sexier

Oooh...the roller coaster thing is a big one! I used to love them! DH is in the restaurant business and every year he gets free season passes to one theme park and two one-day passes to Six Flags. He ends up taking his adult daughter with him to Six Flags, and I want to go, too! For the last few years I've had the pregnancy excuse, but those days are over. I can do this!

That's always my big fear, that the airline seatbelt won't fit. Hasn't happened yet, but they make those extenders for a reason, right?

Losing weight so far has made me happier and more confident.
Because deep down I love clothes shopping, the only thing keeping me from enjoying it now is how I look in the clothes
I want to start a fashion blog
I want to for ther first time in my life try to maintain and weight and not just lose it
Because I want to be fit and healthy before having children and confident I can get back to my pre pregnancy weight.

Overall, i just want to feel better, lose these aches and pains and get fit so i can really spend quality time with my children.

I want to be at the beach and not be self conscious
I want to be able to run with my niece and nephew
I want to not have to worry about every morsel of food, because it is under control.
I want to be an athlete again, not "someone who used to be an athlete"

It's always helpful to remember why we're doing this...

1. I want to finally have self-esteem and appreciate myself.
2. I don't want to be the fat friend and feel left out when all my friends get to wear pretty things and I feel like a blob.
3. I want to live! I don't want to risk health problems in the future.
4. I want to FEEL healthy - not out-of-shape, or crappy from eating bad food.
5. I want to go back to being a runner and being able to SAY I'm a runner without feeling like people are laughing at me.
6. I want to be able to get dressed in the morning without spending hours changing because everything makes me feel fat.
7. I want to be able to eat and be outside in public without feeling judged.
8. I want a happier life and I want to love myself.

* I want to rid myself of PCOS or at least manage it so that it does not negatively impact my health
* I want to be a runner again and to be active again and just be healthy

Hey there, we have some very similar responses. I so, feel you about #5! You can do it, and you will be soooo proud of yourself when you do!

Thanks for the REMINDER to remind ourselves the BENEFITS...... mine are:

**I"m 41 and I don't want to be like this for ALL of my 40's!
**My oldest is graduating from High School on June 2nd and though I don't expect all of this extra weight to be gone, it would be nice if there was a NOTICEABLE difference
**I am ready to unlesh my 'hotness' to my hubby! :)
**I love rollercoasters, trampolines, all that stuff I can't do right now, I miss not doing it
**Being uncomfortable when the resturants have plastic chairs to sit in, like it's going to suddenly break
**I would like to buy clothes at regular mall stores (not a size 2 but a size like 10 or even 12) ;)
**I don't want to start having health issues, I don't have them, but I know I am on the BRINK of having them at any minute!

I want to lose the weight because I honestly do not like the way I look at this weight. I do not like my belly poking out, I do not like the rolls on my back, I do not like going to plus size stores, and I really am just unhappy with my physical appearance. I know it could be better. In addition, I know that I am not at a healthy weight. I know that my old habits: overeating, eating fast food frequently, etc. were not good for my body. So, I want to lose weight to improve my insides and my outsides. I want to be healthy and feel great about the way I look.

- I want to have more energy to play with my kids and enjoy the beautiful place I live.
- I want to be more beautiful for myself and my husband. I look okay with extra weight, but there's nothing like the sexy feeling of knowing I look good in my own skin.
- I want to not deal with the health issues of carrying extra weight.
- I want to set a good example of healthy eating and body image for my kids.
- It's just one thing in life I don't have to deal with - I can change this!

I have many reasons but some of them are:

* dr told me it would help concieve baby#2
* I am always tired
* I want to be able to chase my daughter around without feeling like I want to fall over lol
* I love clothes and want to be able to shop in any store I want
* I want to look sexy for hubby
* I want to have confidence in myself
* I want to set a good example for my daughter
* I want to be healthy

I want to lose the excess:

To improve health - diabetes, cholesterolemia, blood pressure,
To improve mental health - confidence, homone imbalances caused by fat,
To be a positive example for family,
To make my dh smile,
To not embarrass my family,
To wear nice clothes,
To be able to move, hike, climb, swim...,
To be simply comfortable -- in a plane, on a roller coaster, in my own skin.

~ I'm hate having "wet belly" when I do the dishes.
~ I want my attitude to match my body. I've always acted like a thin person because I still feel like one inside.
~ No weight-related health problems - yet. I'm living on borrowed time and I know it.
~ I want a wider selection at the Smorgasbord of Available Men.
~ I miss ice skating and I miss horseback riding. I'll do both again when I'm slimmer.
~ I'm really sick of all the fat prejudice. It's wrong, but I can't change it, so I may as well get skinny.
~ Weight-related aches and pains, be gone!

6. I hate when my friends try on clothes, but I donít want to just because I donít want to look fat.
7. I hate walking into a store, knowing maybe one thing there will fit me.
8. I hate looking around the room, and knowing Iím the fattest one there.
9. I hate being told I look like other people, who are also fat.
10. I donít want to be scared I wonít fit on amusement park rides.
11. I love swimming, but I would like it more if I felt comfortable in something besides swimming bottoms and a shirt.
12. I miss the way I use to look.
13. I love running, but I hate feeling like people are watching my fat move.
14. I love heels, and own a ton. But I feel too fat to wear them.
15. I feel like everytime I see my family, they think about how Iíve gotten bigger.
16. I would like to be able to go get a tattoo without having to think of the most ďattractiveĒ place to get it.
17. I would like to be smaller then my sister.
18. I hate when McKenna looks at me and tells me Im fat, and shes the only skinny one.
19. I hate not having the will power to say no to food.

I love everyone's lists!

Mine would be:
o Be able to run with my brother
o Feel comfortable at the beach/swimming pool
o Better sex with the Hubs
o A healthy pregnancy!!
o More energy on a daily basis
o Potential employers will not discriminate based on my weight
o Feel Strong and Leaner (I love the way my body feels when I've been exercising regularly!)
o A better/new/more varied wardrobe!!
o Being able to find clothes that fit at the thrift store, love a bargain!
o Not feeling like the fat sister (in law) at get-to-gathers
o Shocking everyone at Thanksgiving with my weight loss!
o Sexy Boudoir photos for my Hubby as a Christmas/Anniversary gift (depending on how quickly my body shapes up)
o Being able to wear shorts, not capri's in the summer

Mine would be:
*Get pregnant all on my own...almost 7 years of waiting!
*Look good in pictures and clothes
*Be able to ride roller coasters and feel comfortable
*Be able to run, become a runner
*Not have food control my life. Use it as fuel, not comfort.
*Get to know the skinny me.
*Live a longer, healthier life with my husband.
There are many more reasons then this, but these are the ones that came to mind! :)

1) My knees have always been bad, even at a very low weight. At 286 lbs, they were giving out.
2)I wanted to be able to chase my kids and play with them on the floor.
3)I wanted a better sex life. Not that obese people can't have great sex lives, but my body's physical limitations were. . .frustrating :lol:. I'm still overweight, but this area is much improved 115 lbs later :lol:
4)I realized that my embarrassment about my weight was causing me to skip out on a lot of social opportunities - I would avoid seeing friends I loved who hadn't seen me in years because I didn't want them to see me like that.

I want to lose weight because:

Im tired of worrying about how I look in shorts when I take my kids swimming.

I want to stop not going on dates because I think no one wants a fat girl.

I want to step out of the shower and be happy with what I see. See a body that a 24 year old should have.

I want be able to jump and not feel everything jiggle.

I want to go shopping in the cute section of the stores and not have to wear all the lame stuff they make in plus size.

I want to feel confident when I finally meet my ex's gf.

Itd just plain be nice to not have to consider myself obese or overweight, but instead healthy!

4) I want to know that if I like a guy, I can walk up to him confident in myself. Whether he looks good or not!
5) I want to make my Mom and my Dad proud, and my Grandfather. I don't know how long he'll be around, and he's always wanted to see me skinny like when I was a lot younger.
6) I want to feel good about myself, and I want to have an easier time shopping for pants, rather than sometimes having to walk out of the store because they didn't have my size.
7) In 7 years when I go to my highschool reunion, I don't want anyone to say I look just like I did when I left.
8) I want to look respectable and healthy, to everyone and anyone who looks my way.
9) I want to feel young and beautiful, and know in ten years I won't say I spent my college years and my youth wallowing in obesity :(
10) I don't want to sit and feel my fat is rolling over my pants! Let alone when Im standing.

I dont think theres anything wrong with those reasons. Some of mine are probably a little silly, but like you said...whatever keeps you on track.

I don't think any of your reasons are silly! I really love them all, and the jumping reason is really true. When I workout and I have to do anything that has to do with jumping, I hate feeling stuff jiggle!
