South Beach Diet - South Beach Daily Chat January 20th

Hey ladies and gents! I'm going to go see Green Hornet today, has anyone seen it? I've heard mixed reviews on it bought it made dough when it first came out last week. I'm still waiting to hear on jobs and will call the ones I have the number for on Monday if I don't hear anything within the next two days. Stay blessed!

01-20-2011, 04:24 AM
Sometimes something doesn't taste as good as it once did and this can be a GOOD thing!
As we detox our taste buds change. We are also changing from the inside out. Our numbers may not be going down on the scale but they are going down on the inside. Our BP is lowering along with our cholesterol. We are handling stress so our mind set is changing.
So when you step on your metal monster and you don't see what you want to see, remember your inner changes and be :).

Thank you once again for your happy wishes for me and my Lou.

He did decide that he wanted Chinese. I am SO proud of him. I made the suggestion that he eat (we had take out) only half and save the rest for his dinner and he DID! I told him that if he was still hungry to drink the soup that came with it to fill him up. I am amazed and PROUD of him. He really doesn't get it, but he IS trying to do better.

I talked to him about "treats" and I said I would much rather spend his "treat" money on a better cut of meat (I got him a pork loin roast on managers special for $2.75! for the whole roast) than to get a few doughnuts.

I also got some 70% dark chocolate and will give him one square and some nuts for his snack instead of him eating a whole candy bar every day.

Small steps can and will equal big rewards.

We have snow once again here in Colorado. Cold, but pretty.

Since store day was yesterday today will be recipe looking and cooking.

May this day bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. Marcie :mouse:

Green Eggs and Ham

Breakfast can be at any time of the day
Early morning for me

I never use to eat breakfast
For a very long time indeed

What was I thinking
Where was my mind

The choice is yours
Healthy recipes await

Today I will have an omelet
With green eggs and ham

01-20-2011, 05:05 AM
Marcie, are you really going to make your eggs green??? We love breakfast and will eat breakfast foods for lunch or dinner often! Every Sunday we have breakfast for dinner. It's become a special family treat.

Okie, I am looking forward to hearing how the movie is. Good luck with the job call-backs!

My day is all wacky today. Lukas woke up in the middle of my yoga this morning so I only got to do a third of it (I guess that's not *technically* the "middle of my yoga" then...) before I had to nurse him. Then by the time he was done it was time to get Connor up for school and make the kids' breakfast. Except the girls slept in so instead of doing their homeschool lessons I did my chores for the day. Then when they got up we had to rush off to Kindergarten because Kadyn has her German language tutoring on Thursdays. So everything is out of order. :/ It was nice to walk in the door after dropping the girls off and not have to clean the kitchen, living room, and dining room, though. I'll have to do the girls' schoolwork with them while Connor has his violin lesson this afternoon I guess. Everything will get done. I just hate when it's not the way I'd planned it. I probably need professional help. LOL

I think I'm going to make some black bean brownies today. I've been wanting a sweet treat and I think it would be better to have something "safe" to indulge in than to give in to an off-plan indulgence because my will power gives out.

Luke's almost done nursing so I'm going to finish my yoga in a minute. Hope you all have a good day!

01-20-2011, 05:30 AM
Kara, Green Eggs and Ham is a child's story book from Dr. Seuss. :) (poem is not from his book) But I could make them! Haha!

I have heard of black bean brownies so will be interested in how they are.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Okie, enjoy your movie and NO goodies!

01-20-2011, 06:07 AM
Thanks Kara, I love seeing you by home where you belong! Luke is so cute!
You're a great Mom and friend! Have fun today, will let you know how the movie is.

Food Obsessed: Can't wait to hear how Green Hornet is. We saw Buried last night, also with Ryan Reynolds. Amazing film.

Windsong: Small steps are the key to making changes for me too. :) I stopped using salt years ago, stopped having butter on my bread sometime after that, etc. Now its bigger changes, two months + on South Beach, but based on a foundation built of smaller changes over time.

Kara: We haven't tried black beans as a moistener in brownies yet. By we I mean my husband; I don't bake. :)

Today is all deadlines, and work projects, and things like that, then home for sausage and bean soup, with home made banana pudding for dessert. :)

01-20-2011, 06:33 AM
Annie, you made me laugh with your "By we I mean my husband" line! Hope your projects all get finished by their deadlines and that your dinner is scrumptious!

Marcie, we are huge Dr. Seuss fans in this house! I thought you were serious about the green eggs, though. I am quite gullible. Once my husband told me "gullible" isn't in the dictionary and I actually looked it up. No joke. Apparently I am rather entertaining. :)

Yoga is done now. I haven't done yoga since right after I found out I was pregnant so I was a bit tight, but it was a wonderful workout. I feel all zen and relaxed now. :yoga: Shower and breakfast are next on the agenda (I only ate a small amount this morning because I didn't want to feel yucky when I finished the yoga) and then I'm going to read a couple chapters of the book we're reading for book club at church while the brownies bake.

01-20-2011, 06:40 AM
Good Morning:sunny:

I've been up for awhile-long enough to slip on the ice while shoveling. Fortunately, I don't go down as hard as I used to at my HW. I went to bed early after my busy day at the food bank and now I'm bright eyed and bushy tailed. I always do a "clean out" at the first of the year from our freezers. Since we're leaning vegetarian I have things to use that I probably won't restock. I have a turkey carcass in the pressure cooker for batches of soup. Geez that will last awhile. I still have 2 pumpkins to process...don't know if I'll do that today or not. Plans...the usual...home projects, help mom and perhaps volunteer for 2 hours at the food bank.

Okie, thanks for getting us started. I'm anxious to hear your review of Green Hornet. I thought it looked good but have heard mixed reviews. Do you take an OP snack with you?

Marcie(LadyWindsong), thanks again for the thought provoking message. There is alot more involved in successful weightloss than just following a plan. Not that I don't enjoy weighing less, but I am super happy to be off my blood pressure meds. It has been my biggest NSV. My DH can't believe how great he feels which is his biggest motivation to eat healthy these days. I'm sure Lou is going to really start feeling so much better as he progresses and you are a great strategist.

Annie, small changes lead to bigger ones! I like Karas brownie recipe best. I haven't made any for awhile.

Kara, I like Karas brownie recipe best! lol Cheers to a wacky day, but it sounds like you got your yoga in, anyway.

01-20-2011, 06:41 AM
Good morning :coffee2:

Okie - Good luck on those interviews. It's so tough finding anything right now. Getting interviews is a huge step forward.

Marcie - Thanks for the encouraging thoughts every morning. I am in a rush from the minute I get out of bed so it's nice to get focused on the little corner of my priorities where I am

Kara - As a long time early childhood person I can vouch for the green eggs and ham. I've known lots of teachers/providers that have served them.

Annie - Banana pudding sounds very good. I have always had a thing for pudding.

It's my serious on the road day. One of my counties is on the other side of the mountains, so a long drive and a big commitment in the winter. Most of the drive is cell service free though so I never feel guilty about just enjoying the scenery.

The job situation is in process but taking it's time. Still haven't had our meeting but have had conversations. I think I will move to 4 days and 2/3 of the current turf for the time being. I am still looking for something else though. The job demands a lot and I am not the sort of person to do something half way. That's not a good combination for me.

Okay, the cats are insisting that it's time to feed them (we try to hold out until 6 even if we get up early). I'm starting to worry about my toes ;)

ETA - good morning Debbie. I hope there's no afternoon aches from that fall. The food bank sounds like a great place to spend time and I'm sure they are happy to have such experienced help. Turkey carcasses for soup are one of the few things I miss. They make such rich soup broth.

01-20-2011, 07:03 AM
Debbie, I'm sorry you had a tumble on the ice. :( Be careful today! I've heard of that Kara and her recipes... She's pretty great. ;)

Cyndi, be safe on your drive and good luck with the continuing job situation. It's hard to be in a place like the one you are in but I think you are handling it with grace.

01-20-2011, 07:22 AM
Good morning!

Green Hornet, Green Eggs and Ham.... I had to check to make sure St. Patrick's Day hadn't snuck up on me!

Okie, good luck with the prospective jobs. It sounds like you're on top of things - good for you!

Marcie, I'm curious about your username.... are you/were you a John Denver fan?

Annie, banana pudding sounds good to me, too!

Hello Kara. I've been hearing great things about your brownies for over a year now but still haven't tried them. I'm afraid I'll like them TOO much. :o Enjoy the rest of your day.

Debbie, I'm sorry about your fall this morning. :( I've got my fingers crossed that you won't be hurting tomorrow. I love that you're volunteering at the food bank - what an awesome way to make a difference!

Enjoy the scenery and drive carefully today, Cyndi. This is a tough time of year to be on the road so much. Cutting back to 4 days should help, so I hope that works out. I'll keep praying that a better job comes up soon.

Hello to those of you who haven't checked in yet.

Cottage, I should hear back on my mammo today or tomorrow if there are still concerns. I figure if I don't hear by tomorrow night I'm all set. The tech showed me the area of concern (one nice thing about the digital scans :)) and it seemed to be more a case of "it's hard to see" than "we see something scary" so I'm feeling much better about things now. Thanks for asking.

Have a great, on plan Thursday friends!

01-20-2011, 07:23 AM
Hey all,
Kara, I'm with you. I lay the day out in my head in a certain way and sometimes it is very hard for me to refocus if things go wonky. My son is the same way and always, always wants to plan ahead ("what are we doing in June?" he will ask). I'm trying to look at these disruptions as an "opportunity" to change my perspective. We'll see.

Debbie, slipping on the ice is a big fear of mine. Take some anti-inflammatory (like ibuprofen) and have some ginger tea to prevent swelling. Hope you feel better and take it easy!

Finally, you know who arrived and I am so happy because my end of Phase 1 weigh in is tomorrow. Phase 2 is the real challenge for me. I'm going to really depend on the points to help me control my portions and learn how to do this the right way. I've spoken about this before but I have a terrible issue around following directions, i.e. admitting that I don't "know better" than the person who wrote the book about how to do whatever it is. This will be my challenge for the week. One grain around lunch this week, and then adding a fruit the next.

Hope everyone has a great day...

01-20-2011, 07:36 AM
Good grief! It's really noisy in here!

I slept in for a change and will be back later to read all of this.

01-20-2011, 07:43 AM
Even though I'm a big girl now, I still adore Dr. Seuss. :)

Yikes, Debbie! Slipping on the ice is pretty scary! I'm glad you seem to be OK, though.

Good luck on those interviews, Okie, and I'm glad Marcie and her DH had a nice, OP, anniversary dinner. Kara, I've been hankering for a batch of those brownies myself, and I think I'll whip a batch over the weekend. Cyndi, I bet you get to enjoy some spectacular scenery on your drives. Vermont is such a pretty state. I'm hoping everything works out the way you want on the job front. Heidi, lets hope you don't hear anything more from the mammo. I usually have to have both the mammo plus an ultrasound when I go for my yearly, as I have dense breasts and fibrocystic breast tissue. I don't mind, though, as I'd rather be safe than sorry. Matilda, good luck on your weigh-in tomorrow!

01-20-2011, 08:10 AM
Morning all!

I'm running really late today so don't have time to even read this thread properly :o I do have a question for you all though.

During phase 1 week 1 did any of you get light headed?

I became very light headed yesterday evening to the point where my balance was off. I figured this was because I missed my afternoon snack due to running from class to class. Even after a generous dinner of taco bake and squash, I still felt light headed and exhausted.

I slept really hard last night and this morning... I still feel a bit light headed. I'm a little worried. I did go to the gym twice this week on Mon and Wed and did strength training and cardio.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

01-20-2011, 08:38 AM
Heidi, I'm thinking of you as you wait for your results. It does sound good that they were just rechecking to see an area better!

Matilda, I have to count calories even on South Beach when I stall, too. I'm crossing my fingers that your Phase 2 intros go smoothly!

Morning, Ruth! Glad our gabbing didn't wake you up! ;)

Linda, what's your favorite Dr. Seuss book? Mine is _Horton Hatches the Egg_. As the story goes, my parents used to read it to me before nap and bedtime every day when I was a kid and I ended up memorizing it. I have a cassette recording of myself reciting it when I was maybe two years old. It's really cute!

LAK, are you getting enough protein? That would be my best guess as to the cause of the light headedness, but I am far from a medical expert.

The brownies are out of the oven and are cooling. I threw in a half carton of cranberries and some walnuts this time so we'll see how they turn out. Connor is doing his homework and in a couple minutes we have to go get the girls so we can make it back for Connor's violin lesson. Then it's on to martial arts class. And then I get to watch (your yesterday's) American Idol! I have to admit that show is my guilty pleasure. :)

01-20-2011, 08:52 AM
Good morning! Snow day here; love that they announced it last night. I suspect my son will have to go in anyways to work on next week's broadcast. It dawned on me last night that I have not stepped foot outside my house for almost a whole week since last Friday's surgery!

I can practically recite Green Eggs and Ham from memory and my youngest is 18! His Oh the Places You'll Go has a great message that you can apply to life, and fits really well with "dieting" or living a healthy lifestyle.

01-20-2011, 09:27 AM
Good morning!!

It's another full day. I have an IEP meeting today and the mom is chatty. Which is okay, except she starts talking a lot about herself and not the student. We did schedule anotehr IEP right after it, so my job for the day is to keep this mom on track. I coach an Odyessey of the Mind team, which I love. However, I just found out we have supply judges and volunteer names by Saturday and I don't have any. This is our first year doing it and it has definately been a learning year.

Have a good day!!!!

01-20-2011, 10:00 AM
Good morning,

Snow day here, so I am wfh today- two days in one week!!! Whewhoo

Okie- got my fingers crossed for you and those jobs! Let me know about Green Hornet, I know my DH is wanting to go

Debbie- sorry about the fall!! Ouch try to be gentle on yourself for the rest of the day.

Kara- I do love your brownies but no one else in my family does so I don't make them as I would eat it all up by myself.

Marcie- Thanks for the encouraging words.

DH was sick and in bed all day yesterday- luckily he is feeling better today. DD2 is excited to go sledding later on.

Have a great day everyone.

01-20-2011, 10:08 AM
Good morning ladies.. I have to work today and tomorrow.. But then off Sat. and
I think my refrig. is going on the blink though.. Hope it doesn't cost too much to fix it.. Wish us luck there..:dizzy:
Ya'll have a terrific day!! Take care...

01-20-2011, 10:28 AM
Grrr...angry at the scale, angry at my husband, frustrated with the kids. Not a great start to the day

Lady Windsong - your words are so encouraging this morning it made me kind of tear up. I'm having a horrible battle with the scale and it's so easy to lose track of the fact that I haven't eaten sweets, refined carbs, or had any alcohol for 17 days now. My insides have to be much happier - thank you so much for the inspiration today.

LAK1974 - I agree about the protein, but with the sleeping it might be the start of a sinus infection? I used to chalk up my light-headedness to my diet because my sinus didn't hurt at all. Try taking a decongestant and see if it helps. (I always had this huge hope that I was light-headed because I was losing weight so fast :D

Mmckellen - You can do it!!! Counting calories has really shown me my issues with portion control as well.

tomandkara - Which recipe are you trying? Maybe that will be my planned weekend treat??...let us know how they turn out!

Good morning to everyone!!

01-20-2011, 10:30 AM
Annie, enjoy your sausage and bean soup, with home made banana pudding for dessert.

Oh. Lex I do hope that you won't be too sore and bruise up. I can't eat nuts, seeds or any meat so I am learning to like more veggies. Good for you for the freezer clean out. Feels good to use up and get rid of OLD things.

Enjoy your day today Cyndi and do enjoy the beautiful scenery and drive safe.

Heidi Windsong is my favorite perfume since forever! I am glad that you are taking care of your health and best wishes for a good outcome.

Matilda think positive. You will be fine. You want this so plan, act and have a motto that will get you through.

Karen glad that you are healing. Snow/ice here and the major I25 is closed. Enjoy your day.

TMom keep her under control and good luck.

Pearle enjoy the winter weather and glad he is a tad better.

Lanee fingers crossed for you.

Amy breathe! Go find something to take your mind off of the negative and you are very welcome.

01-20-2011, 10:59 AM
Busy morning already! Today is my late day at work so I had planned to be all snuggly and warm under the covers all morning. Chris wouldn't let me help shovel so I got back in bed and was nice and warm. He took my car since it's not really made for snow and left the keys for his, however he called me when he got to work saying he left his badge in HIS car so he couldn't get into the building. They have very high security at both places we work, so they weren't going to let him in. He said the roads were HORRIBLE and he didn't want to drive back. SO.... I, being the wonderful fiance that I am, offered to get out of the nice warm bed, throw on several layers of clothing, brush off his car, and white-knuckle it to his work so he didn't have to drive back.

YIKES. It's as though the plow people thought "I know the weather man said that we're going to get 3-6 inches of snow, but I don't buy it. I'm going to wait it out." And they're still waiting. We had 2-3 inches on the ground when Chris shoveled this morning, and it's still coming down. I'm hoping they get out and plow before I have to head to work, because I have quite a bit farther to go than Chris did.

Good news is that I'm down 2.4 lbs. Yayyyyy! Every little bit helps. If I continue at this rate, I should hit goal by the first week of April or so. As long as I get there before Easter, I'm happy! I don't want to have to buy a ton of new spring clothes.

Anyhoozle, gotta get in the shower now. Hope everyone is having a fantabulous day. KEEP WARM!!! :brr:

Lisa :D

01-20-2011, 11:04 AM
Kara, I'm with you on the day being out of whack. My kids slept in too, and we're slated to be going to the Children's Museum with our homeschool co-op, so looks like lessons might be postponed until this afternoon? who knows...but i love this flexibility.

01-20-2011, 11:57 AM
I'm getting lots of protein, with every meal. I track what I eat and I eat at least 80g of protein a day.

I feel ok right now, the light headedness has gone. DH suggested it might be my body getting used to the caffiene being cut out, and other things too. Phase 1 is super restrictive and I used to eat a lot of fruit, and a good amount of grains too. I do need to keep up with my snacks I know that.

01-20-2011, 12:08 PM
LAK1974, I experienced a few days in the middle of my first week where I felt weird, weak and lethargic. Others called it the South Beach Flu. :faint: You can google it to read more. It's the result of our bodies detoxing from sugar and such. Others suggested beans and milk to combat it. I hope you feel better soon! :goodvibes

01-20-2011, 12:31 PM
I will look into the south beach flu, thanks frenchgirl! I'm going to be glad when phase 1 is over, although I do feel better overall, I hate the headaches, tiredness etc.

So I googled "south beach flu" and yup, sounds like that's what I have! headaches, tiredness, feeling of light headed. It's only supposed to last a few days and adding more milk or beans to the diet can help. I'm making chili this weekend so that will help for sure.

Thanks again all .

01-20-2011, 01:02 PM
Beans and dairy really do help the SBD Flu. Fortunately it doesn't last long, and you push through it and then feel FABULOUS. I love how energized I feel after I push through that. Only time I feel crappy again is when I go off plan..... maybe I shouldn't do that, then, huh? ;)

Good luck LAK, you can do it :) Hope you feel better soon!

01-20-2011, 01:46 PM
Morning all!

I'm running really late today so don't have time to even read this thread properly :o I do have a question for you all though.

I became very light headed yesterday evening to the point where my balance was off. I figured this was because I missed my afternoon snack due to running from class to class. Even after a generous dinner of taco bake and squash, I still felt light headed and exhausted.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Does the dizziness start when you change positions (lying to sitting or sitting to standing)? If that seems to trigger or worsen it, you might be dehydrated. A lot of water is lost in phase 1, and, I found I had to work pretty hard to make sure I adequately hydrated, and even then still had spells.

01-20-2011, 02:23 PM
Thanks for the info regarding "South Beach Flu." My daughter and I start on SBD (again, hopefully for the last time) on Tuesday and yesterday she ended up staying home from work with a major headache. I remembered the tired, just not the rest of it. I will send her an email...

Happy Thursday!

Christy Sue

01-20-2011, 02:58 PM
I made my eggs "green" this am- but I put lots of spinach in them so they were really just green flecked. :)

But it was good! Anyways, things are going well. Today I'll be hosting a wine and cheese event at work... I got hummus and veggies for me to eat. :)

01-20-2011, 03:04 PM
uscarchie - I keep veggies and hummus at work too! Today it's celery....

01-20-2011, 05:42 PM
Good afternoon, everyone is so busy.

Kara, "gullible" may not be in the dictionary but it definitely describes me at times. Actually, you don't need to feel gullible about the green eggs, it's probably more common than we think. Since I started SB, I do eat green eggs sometimes and green oatmeal pancakes too. I add spinach and mix it in the blender. I can't really taste the spinach, it just looks different and I get my veggies in at breakfast.

FO, DD saw the Green Hornet last weekend but I forgot to ask her how it was. I will try and remember to ask her and let you know.

Debbie, I'm glad you didnt hurt yourself when you slipped on the ice. That's always one of my biggest fears, although it's not something we have to deal with often around here.

Phase one has been going well. I've managed to stay totally on plan. DGS was feeling better today so he went to preschool, which gave me a chance to get to the grocery store. I was getting seriously low on veggies.
DS2 woke up with a really sore throat this morning, but he doesnt like to miss school so he went anyway. He's taking a nap now, which means he must feel pretty bad. This is his first year of college and he can't afford to miss classes tomorrow so hopefully he will feel better by then.

Have a great day,
