I'd guess right off the bat no- don't they have oatmeal and grain and fruit in them?

Thanks for the help i am starting to get the hang of the good and bad things and how to better read the labels on things.

It's both a great skill and a little depressing when you really learn to read labels. I've spent three years trying to explain to my Mom that "whole grain" is really not whole grain. :?:

Have you found other yummy snacks? There are some good ideas in the recipes if you need more.

One of my absolute favorite snacks is apple slices dipped in one of the single serving Greek yogurts mixed w/ 2 tablespoons of peanut butter and 2 packets of Splenda. YUM!!! And it really fills you up b/c the Greek yogurt has tons of protein in it!!!

Cyndi, what do you mean "'whole grain' is really not whole grain"?

Now that I'm on Phase 2 and allowed a grain and a fruit per day, I'm going to make the nessa bars...with almonds and dried cherries...mmmmmmmmm

In the US companies can label products "whole grain" if something like 30% of the grain is whole with the rest being regular processed white flour. It's a ridiculous rule and really confuses people who are trying to make better choices

That is stupid! Does it have to say "made with whole grain" or can it just say "whole grain"?

You have to read the ingredient label. If the front says "100% whole grain" then you can safety assume it's actually whole grain. If it says "made with whole grain:, or "contains whole grains" ,it's probably not the first ingredient. It can be 3rd or 4th on the list of ingredients.

True... I worked in the Food group at a law firm last summer, and learned all about the screwy, misleading labeling rules that FDA promulgates (and, incidentally, how the food pyramid is a big load of crock driven by lobbying interests).

Nessa Bars are our pet nickname for the Oatmeal Breakfast Bars, found in the Phase 2 breakfast recipes. One of our former Beachers shared the recipe with us, and we fondly named it after her. :)
