I didn't lose anymore than I'd normally lose....2-3lbs a week. I got much stronger and far more stamina though. I couldn't do butt kicks, lunges, or bicycle crunches when I started and I fatigued quickly. By the end, things were much easier. You really notice throughout how you are changing in your strength and endurance.

This video was intended for toning up and losing those last stubborn pounds. A companion to the book Making the Cut.

30 day shred gave me some toning, and I felt a lot stronger, but as far as weight loss is concerned it doesn't matter how much you exercise if you're eating too many calories. I alternated the 30 day shred with her longer 40 minute videos Banish Fat Boost Metabolism which is mostly cardio, and No More Trouble Zones which focuses on toning. I did these videos consistently, 6 days a week for four months and I only lost about five lbs because I didn't change any of my eating habits. I felt healthier and a little more in shape but I didn't lose weight like I wanted.

My point is... don't expect dramatic weight loss from any exercise regime on its own. I like how Tosca Reno does the math... weight loss is 10%genetics, 10%exercise, and 80% what you put in your mouth :D

I did the dvd to get some toning as I was going to the Caribbean for a vacation and did see change in my shoulders. I wasn't dieting or watching what I was eating but I definitely noticed a change in my strength and endurance.

I'm starting again tomorrow but this time I will be watching what I'm eating and drinking as I've just joined a v-day challenge, I'm turning 40 in 5 weeks and I'm going on another Caribbean vacation in March to celebrate my b-day.

Here's to sweat and pain...and muscle!

I tried it for the first time yesterday, the level 1 workout. I liked it because it's compact and intense. I've never really done circuit training before, but I'm interested to see how my body does with it. My previous workout regimens have been either cardio or weight training focused and time consuming (half-marathon training, body pump classes, etc.). Right now I'm looking for something convenient and quick that I can do every day to get the ball rolling again since I've been very lazy for a long time, I think this just might do the trick!

I'm on day 2 of level 1 and I remember now how much I enjoyed it...just got to put it on the top of my agenda each day. I am feeling sore but happy :)

It's easier for me to do after work and my 30th day will be Feb. 1st - lets see if we can keep each other motivated?

Sounds good to me! It might be my imagination, but I think day 2 may have been a tiny bit easier than day 1.

I can't decide whether I want to do the 30DS or not - I've had the video for a while, but have never tried it. I want to do the most efficient workout possible, and I get discouraged when I read that people don't lose a significant amount of weight on it.

But, everyone's different, so what the heck, I'll try it. I'll give it a full week to see if it's more effective than what I'm doing now. And even if it doesn't make me lose more than normal, it will definitely not hurt!!

I did it last around april last year for a week straight and I lost 10 pounds. I got happy that I lost 10 pounds in a week so I stopped ( I'm shamefully notorious for stopping once I see progress). I just started back up today and I felt like I was gonna puke :barf: . I'm planning to stick with it this time though.

I lost 7lbs after Day 30 (took 4 days off between levels 2 and 3 but other than that, I did it every night). I was eating right the whole time.

I liked it and will consider doing it again!

I just started the lvl 1 (its free onDemand right now) and yeah my knee has been complaining at me but I definitely FEEL this workout more than any Ive done yet. I have high hopes. I want to feel strong, I hope this does it for me!

I'm doing the 30 DS along with, Jillian's Last chance workout and six week six pack abs. It kills me when I'm doing it, but you're done really quickly. I rotate through the three, it is getting a bit easier (ok, a tiny bit easier) but I've only done it, and the others, for two weeks. I think I like the last chance workout the best. I did that for almost 2 months straight, of course now I can ACTUALLY do that one pretty well now.

I agree with the others, if you don't change how you're eating, it's only going to change the scale so much. I just try to make better choices, less sweets, more fruits & veggies, whole grains . . . and I don't beat myself up if I eat a cookie, I just don't eat the whole bag

Try it, it will be hard at first, NO DOUBT about that, but just stick with it and see what happens

I could see how the all the jumping jacks/butt kickers/jump rope could be tough on the knees. Maybe just substitute some lower impact cardio moves? This youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGh25_PPxnc) has some examples. If you're doing lunges and squats in proper form (never bend your knees past your toes!) I think they shouldn't be too hard on the knees.

I have this but it killed my knees....anyone have trouble with that? Can you modify if you have trouble with your knees???

I have very loose joints in general - but the knees are the worst. One of the best things about 30DS for me was that I didn't need to modify it too much just for my joints (for my heart rate, well that's another story :dizzy: ) I just had to make sure that i was really doing the exercises right, like the squats, and not getting up off the floor or out of exercises too quickly. I also did my own stretches at the end, as I found hers to be too short and harsh for my particular needs.

No matter how you modify it, you are still DOING it! And that feels great, too.

Good luck!

Me too! I've been taking the time to do a little 10 - 15 min yoga session after the workout. Feels soooo good on those warm muscles!

I do this every other day and work out on my elliptical for 40 min on the day I'm not doing the shred. I've been at it since September
And just now switched to level three. I can't do all the moves without modifying. The main reason I wanted to do this is to strength train and tone and avoid jiggly loose skin while attempting to lose 100 lbs. I've noticed improved endurance and strength, big visible changes to my upper body and rear (where upper thighs connect to the buttocks)

I have never watched The Biggest Loser, so I kinda knew who Jillian was, but nothing about her. I a little disappointed that in this thread no one warned me that she is THE SPAWN OF SATAN!

Seriously, LOL, I have been doing a lot of cardio, but no real strength stuff and I did the Shred last night and thought I was going to die. And I looked like I was about 80 years old limping down the stairs at work today because my thighs hurt so bad.

I know the video is hard when I'm screaming at the screen Jillian says "C'mon, I know it's hard" and I yell back "You don't know anything, B***H!"

Might have to store this one until I'm a little better shape :o

Now today I got Cardio Ballroom with Julianne Hough - dancing is more my style - hope I like this one better....

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the cool down, especially since I'm so wiped after I thoroughly like lying down on the floor and stretching every which way :)

Today will be day 5 of L1 and I do feel much better and stronger. I notice a greater difference this time around as I'm really watching what I eat - I've already lost a pound and hoping to be down another by Monday which would be one full week of the shred.

I'm already thinking about what I will do after the 30 days are over...?

I did the shred for 14 days (includes 2 rest days), and then stopped because I had to go out of town to visit a family member that was hospitalized. Below are my results from those 14 days. I'm starting over again tomorrow though!

Lost: 4lbs
Lost: .6 body fat
Lost: 1 inch off bust, 1 inch off hips, 2 inches off waist

I also added in 30 minutes of cardio a day as well. I was very happy with the results. Looking forward to starting up again! Let me know if anyone would be interested in a 30-day shred accountability thread.

I'm aiming to do 30 minutes of cardio 3-4 times per week - usually cycling...but I also try to throw in some balance games on my wii which is how I track my weight...and have some fun. I play vb once per week which should also help to some degree.

...day 6 of L1 tomorrow (today seemed to go by faster than usual...does that mean it's getting easier? -lol)

I like Jillian at Biggest loser and I thought her workout would be great.
I was all sore and I felt like granny after all jumping jacks at the beginning. After while my cardio and toning got better, the workout became a little (how to say nicely? Oh, yes - boring. Sorry, Jillian. She isnt enough motivating to kept me the whole mont. I also did Banish Fat boost metabolism and No more trouble zones at the same time.

This is a great workout generally, I just prefer cardio/dance coreography.

Stick with it!

otowngrl - That's cool! I see you've done it before, how would you compare the level 2 and 3 workouts? Does it get a lot harder? I'm starting to find doing the same workout a bit boring at this point, so I put the tv on mute and listened to pandora radio while working out today, much better! FYI - Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis is the perfect pace for the static lunge/bicep curl set. :)

otowngrl
01-09-2011, 12:50 PM
The monotony does get to me too. I have in the past muted the dvd and played other music - sometimes I think I have memorized all the dialogue. I think what keeps me going is that I look in a different direction in my living room each day and rarely at the tv.

If I can remember correctly, I thought that level 2 was way harder than level 3 and that I wish the warm-ups and cool downs were longer and more different for each level.

Today is day seven and it's already 1 in the afternoon...a very leisurely wake up this morning. Think it will be late before I get day 7 done...so much to do today...then back to work tomorrow. argh!

otowngrl
01-09-2011, 08:56 PM
Well i did it...it was 6:45 in the evening and I finally pushed my butt to complete the 7th day of L1.

Feeling a little tired as some days seem harder to get there and push through but the fact that I've done 7 straight days is IMO awesome!!! I think by day 11 I"ll be ready to switch over to L2. I'm starting to notice that I'm not dying for breath, water or a break. And that last weight exercise that's paired with the chest flies - I can finally do both sets without dropping my arms which makes me so happy that my strength is improving - it"ll be great for my vb games.

Persevere!!!

Congrats...I must confess that after finishing day 8 of L1 I sneaked a peak at L2 to remind myself of what would be coming - I think I'm ready to move on but will go to day 10 before changing just so I can master that last weights move which makes me feel like my arms are going to fall off!

Ive done a week of L1 and I can certainly feel a difference but it has definitely not gotten "easy" like a lot of my other work out dvds seem to do. I dont have L2 so Im going to stick with 1 and maybe do the Metabolism boost workout? Whatever is free on OnDemand.

I did the 3DS last May-July and I lost 2 pounds (because I never changed the way I was eating), but I did lose 6 inches total! I might try it again now that I am actually counting calories and see what that does. Oh, and I did L3 maybe one or two times...I have pretty bad knees and they were too shot after doing this level.

I thought I was doing pretty well with L2 until I had to switch legs on the military press...it was all downhill from there pretty much every time I had to put a weight in my hand or assume the plank position!

I did get on my bike afterwards...and now I'm going to do it all again after work today! YIKES!!!

I had got this to go with my aspiration to lose 100 lbs this year.

I did it 2 days the best I could and was like WOW this is crazy. I rested a day with just a 10 minute walk and got right back to it the next day. This week I alternated and did it Mon, Wed and Fri. On alternate days I did other cardio mostly its been Walk Away the Pounds but I want to start incorporating her Banish Fat Boost Metabolism in there on the opposite days. And I'm building in Bob Harper's Yoga for the Warrior some. I'd like to build that up to 2-3 days a week too. Its tough on arms that are already worked pretty well.

I have already gained precious endurance and stamina. Yes as she says she has 400 lb people that can do jumping jacks I got my 300 lb behind doing jumping jacks. I can do the first two rounds of them with little work which is a huge improvement from the first day when I seriously had to invent my own "modification" she won't speak of. ;) the jump rope is too hard on my knees so I skip rope and it keeps my heart rate up.

I'm stronger for sure. I have gone from barely able to push myself through 3 knee push ups to quite easily doing 10 in the last 2 weeks.

I've lost 4.4 lbs in 15 days so its not bad results so far.

I have this DVD in right now and am getting ready to start my first day on Level 1. :carrot:

How often does she recommend Level 1 to be done? Every day, every other day? Also, when does one move up to the other levels?

otowngrl
01-17-2011, 10:21 PM
The 30 day shred is meant to be done every day and you move up to the next level when you feel that you are ready. The first time around I didn't do the 30 days straight but did move up levels when I felt ready. I also wasn't watching what I was eating...this time I am.

I'm now doing the dvd for a second time and have been doing it for 14 days straight - moved to L2 on the 11th day. Unfortunately, some things came up at work and by the time I got home, I only had time to eat something quick and then go to my volleyball game. Will get back on the wagon tomorrow...feel guilty an it was 25 minutes for me to destress and think about nothing else but the pain! ;)

Good luck - one day at a time. It will get better and you will feel stronger and that's what matters - perseverance!

I have heard Jillian strong recommends a day of rest with this so 6 days. I however alternate it. I did the first 2 days and had to have a day off I was so sore just from Level 1. Granted I am starting with a lot of weight and was way out of shape. I feel stronger now like I could do it 5-6 straight each week but I also want to do other longer cardio a few days a week as well as some yoga/pilates 2-3days.

Yesterday was my day but I missed it. I had forgot we were having company(best friends middle son stayed this weekend) and I used the exercise in front of others "excuse". Its either that or tv is taken up. I was afraid to workout earlier in the morning because of noise. So going to do this one today. Hopefully it will kick my cramps away. :dizzy:

I did day 2 of Level 1 last night. I've only got about another 10 lbs or so to lose to meet my goal. I thought this would be a great way to finish out my journey! To try to speed up my progres I'm working out with some cardio in the morning and then doing Jillian in the evenings. I started out with 5lb weights but had to down size those to 3lbs because it was way to hard on my back the next day. 3lbs felt much better last night too!!!

After 3 days off due to work commitments, I got back to L2 and anything plank related, the military presses and the v-raises are still a challenge. Only four days to go on L2 but I don't know if I'll have mastered the above exercises by the end of 10 days. Despite all, it's still the most relaxing 25 minutes I get all days - if you can believe that!

One idea I have for checking out how you like an exercise video is to get them from the library. That way you can see what the workout if like before you invest in it. I have done this and I found that I really like Joel Harper workouts. I also think that whatever we do is better than doing nothing..that I used to do alot of..LOL

I was looking for forums on this subject and I came across this thread -actually joined the site to post! Haha

I got this dvd on Saturday, started on Monday so I've just done day 3 of level one.
My legs and bum are SO SO sore! But I guess this means it's working right? I really didn't want to shred today but my legs actually didn't hurt during and they don't hurt now its just a few hours later the pain starts.

Is anyone else having problem or has had problems with the push ups? I really struggle even with the modified part of them. I had breast surgery last year so I'm not sure if I'm just struggling due to my weaker chest muscles =/

I have been doing 30DS for about 20 days now. I lost 33 lbs using another workout video, but was getting bored with it. One day one, I couldn’t not do a single pushup and was completely out of breath!! I am happy to say that right now I can complete level one without even breaking a sweat. I have been doing levels two and three together everyday. Level two is by far the hardest! I have to push myself to get through them. I have only lost about 5 lbs, but I can do pushups now and can actually see the muscles in my arms! If you hang in there it is defiantly worth it!
