Operator265

Point of Clarification...

I mean things for which the company name has "become" the name of the product no matter who makes it. Kleenex now means tissue no matter who makes the tissue. When you ask for a kleenex, you don't care if it's made by Puffs, it's pretty universally called a kleenex. I even heard it called a Puffs kleenex once.

If one owns a Caddy, that is often how it's referred to because a Cadillac is considered special, but it's a car. Someone with a Honda wouldn't call their car a Caddy but probably would just refer to it as their car.

Any brand of whipped topping is commonly called Cool Whip and a Xerox came to mean a copy of something no matter the maker of the machine used to make the copy. See what I mean???

This came up on another forum in which a British chick said she was hoovering the carpets. Good chance her vacuum isn't even a Hoover. Could be a Kirby or Oreck. But, you wouldn't hear someone say they were Kirbying the carpets. ;)

EZMONEY

My 2 cents worth!

Going to the lawyer today with cousins. We would like to be medical power of attorney for her. Just in case she can't make decisions. She thinks we want her money. Which is CRAZY! She hasn't ever been married and she is the last one of 7 siblings. My 2 cousins and I are the only ones that live close. It has been a riot...the other night she had to sit by the nurse in the nurse's station...cuz she keeps getting up without assistance. And they now have an alarm on her bed or in the chair if she is sitting in it. It won't be long and she will learn how to disconnect the alarm! :D

Just a couple of months ago I stepped out onto the back porch and saw a helicopter flying above my head. It was actually close enough to blow my hair a little bit. Turned out my neighbor had gotten himself killed working on his kitchen. He was doing something with the stove, which was electric, but there was also talk about smelling gas. He was pretty blue when his wife found him. They weren't sure if it was an electric shock or asphyxiation that killed him.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, knew the man was a total klutz and no one was "surprised" that it was the way he would go. Sad as heck though. Somethings really are best left to the pros.

Operartor - Do you surface miners identify with Chile's underground miners?

My hometown is mostly underground mining, so... YES!!!! Many, many of our friends are UGs, so YES!!!! I also got a call one night that lead me to believe my husband at the time was killed, so... YES!!!! It was actually the X telling me that one of our friends was dead, but his voice was messed up from the dust and stress(he was on the mine rescue team) and he was being very formal. I had been asleep for about 30 minutes when the call came in and wasn't completely lucid when I heard, "L, there's been an accident at the mine resulting in a fatality...." I thought it was the safety manager telling me it was the X. My chest and head exploded and I started becoming hysterical. Took him about 5 minutes to calm me down enough for me to understand what had happened.

I saw the first guy come out just before work last night and darned near lost it watching his son. Excuse me, I gotta go wash my face now.

Grats, Bargoo! Yeah, computers are a need nowadays. So I understand ;). Typewriters are EVIL! I still used one two years back when my computer program went on the fritz at work, so awkward!

Heck, I've been too good with my small credit card, I got denied a car loan the weekend before last because I didn't have a huge credit history! That's what I get for having parents that freaked me out about credit cards at a young age. :lol3:

Grammar Girl to the Rescue! (http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/who-versus-whom.aspx):
Like whom, the pronoun him ends with m. When you're trying to decide whether to use who or whom, ask yourself if the answer to the question would be he or him. That's the trick: if you can answer the question being asked with him, then use whom, and it's easy to remember because they both end with m.
