PCOS/Insulin Resistance Support - What Are Statistics for Conceiving with the Dx of PCOS?

Hi all!

Just Monday I was tentatively diagnosed with PCOS when I went into a new Ob-Gyn. I went because I want to have a baby desperately, but haven't had a period since I went off BCP's. That was April. My periods have always been a little off, at times going as long as a year between. My other symptom is the facial hair which I battle constantly along with mild acne.

Sooo, he seems to think we could get my system operational again with provera and low-dose fertility drugs... and lots of prayer I suppose as well! I do have one child, she's 11, so I know it can be done. I also now know that I've always had this. It sounds like I hit the jackpot doctor-wise. I just thought I would go around interviewing them until I found a keeper, but my first one turned out to be a real prince. I love him! He listened to everything I had to say, didn't try to rush me out of there, answered all my questions, even chatted with me! He explained in detail the method that we are attempting here in an effort to get preggers.

Soooo.... I'm wondering the statistics and how possible is it to conceive if you have what is being called a mild PCOS? :?:

Thanks from your comrade in arms...

There really are no stats for PCOS and conception because there are so many degrees of PCOS. Im sorry this wasnt what you were looking for.

This info may help though: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/journal.php?s=&journalid=15480&action=view

Thank you Hopeful Spirits!
It does seem to be a very generalized broad diagnosis. I gave my fasting blood sugar today and they are testing blood for lactin as well. If those are negative Dr will do an ultrasound of the ovaries to be sure.

I honestly was hoping when I posted this thread that people would come forward and say, "Hey I have babies and have PCOS! It's possible." But it goes in all directions I suppose. Some do some don't. I suppose I was looking for encouragement as I pursue the positive pregnancy test! Lol! I hope the journey is short. And for others with my problem, I hope this time next year finds you to be cradling a little one of your own as well!

Love ya

Well, I had a baby. I was only 22, though, and they say that the earlier you start trying, the better the chances are. As PCOS ages, it becomes harder and harder. However, the docs still are not 100% sure that I really do have PCOS. I give up hope on ever getting a diagnosis, or proper treatment. I was on the low carb diet for so long, all my blood results came back normal, the ovaries are not polycystic, but I still have a LOT of the symptoms. I would suggest you start a preventitive diet, it definitely worked for me. Good luck with the little one!

Thanks for replying Sherrie and HS! :)

I had my daughter young too, I was 20, but I know I have been this way always. In my teens I remember going for a whole year without a period. I remember the doctors being baffled at this admission as they prepared me for a tonsillectomy. They made me have a pregnancy test even though I told them I was a virgin. When I had conceived my daughter I had gone four months without a period beforehand (I was a normal weight at that time) and the doctors thought I was four months pregnant but it did no good to try to explain to them that was how I was. They thought I had a dead fetus since they couldn't hear the heartbeat yet. I told them I was only about a month along and they wouldn't hear it yet, but I was apparently talking to myself.

We will see how this all goes for me now, 12 years older and wondering what's up with my ovaries. Here's hoping...

Thank you for all the wonderful info on PCOS as well HS, I've been over it all a couple of times. I'm a medical transcriptionist at a hospital as well, so I have some background in the medical field and that helps somewhat.

TY!

I have a baby. Took me 18 months. I won't take fertility drugs, and if I were you I would attempt to get things working again before jumping right in with the drugs. JMO, of course. The thing with doctors is they are predisposed to treating things with drugs, and sometimes drugs aren't necessary.

I hear ya on the experience when actually pregnant too. ;) I hadn't had a period for 6 months, and the doctor who told me I was pregnant asked if I'd felt any movement or had noticed my abdomen getting bigger. Turns out I was about 6 weeks along at the time, but I had to deal with lots of people thinking I was 6 months along until I got that first ultrasound. And that was with my history of irregular periods and PCOS.

Heck, I even had a doctor ask me how I got pregnant! :D

Hi There!

I'm 34 years old and at the beginning of my "fertility" journey weighed 265 (last year). I was diagnosed with PCOS and IR at the end of July(2002) and was put on 1500 of Metformin ( I went to having irregular cycles to regular 31 day cycles on my own - no drugs). I did a low carb diet (was told by RE not to go on Atkins diet) and slowly lost weight. In the middle of October, I joined Curves and began to do reflexology (I bought a "do it yourself" book). Of course, I did a lot of praying I found out on Monday that I am 6 weeks pregnant! We've been trying for over a year and a half and were told that we needed extra help because of the PCOS. Now, I don't know if it was the Met (my doctor seems to think it is) or the diet, weight loss ( I now weigh 238) or even the reflexology....it can happen.

If you would like, I could post the reflexology points that are for the reproductive organs. Let me know.
