This thread is in transition. We have three regular posters, others have come and gone and anyone who wants to jump in is welcome. If you are a lurker and have read the last couple of threads you have noticed that we are all trying new things now. Rather than change the title of the thread when we are so close to #100, we have decided to continue calling it the PMD thread until we do hit 100. Then we'll choose a title that more aptly describes what we are doing in the way of diet. It is a good diet by the way, we have each lost weight on it, but after about 3 years are ready for a change.

Give ourselves a pat!!!
Alice, you are ONE SERIOUS shopper! I like your style girl!!
What a good idea too for Christmas...I know the longer one has been married the harder it is to buy something for one another because pretty much everything has been bought, so you probably did him a BIG favour!!!
Your relationship with your D sounds SOOO nice Ledom! I bet you were (are) a wonderful mom (not like I was ... a self obsessed mom with MY own going to school etc. Which of course now I feel bad about but too late, alas...). I am more help to my D now that she is university than I ever was when she was in grade school. My DH was pretty good though.
Well so far I have been within my point range everyday....(I have no desire to go tell the wonderful Father P. that I am a "GLUTTON"...UGHHHH!!!! WHAT an UGLY word, eh??:p ) I even had 3 points left tonight and thought what the heck, it is the weekend have a 4 oz. glass of wine:smug:
Your "weight room" sounds great Ledom. My darkroom is turning into a storage room :( containing the dog carrier, old rugs and the like. It is something I would like to get back doing, printing I mean. It is just that I haven't been thrilled with any photos that I have taken, just all "grab" type shots. I also miss belonging to the photo club that I went to when I was on the mainland. But you sound like you are smoking right along. How do you do it? Teach, photograph, kayak, body build...you are one amazing girl!
Alice, that is very interesting about it being a cold winter...I am not surprised because it seems SO cold here and it way too early to be this cold. I bet your leaves are nice now, eh?
This Tuesday is the feast day of one of my FAVOURITE saints...St. Teresa of Avila, a great mystical writer. Her autobiography is good read for anyone even for those not even remotely interested in religion. I highly recommend to the world out there...one of the two women (that I know about anyway) who is considered a doctor of the church.
Also Monday is the Canadian thanksgiving. The kids are coming with the dog. I am making cabbage rolls and perogies....slavic soul food.
OK, everyone that is all the news in my corner of the world...enjoy your Sunday!

It's been a very rainy day so far, but I'm not complaining in the least bit. Yesterday was a gorgeous typical fall day. Hope you both are enjoying your weekend.
ledom, I'm glad that things are going well with your D. It seems like you both are having good quality time together with your weekly lunches. What a wonderful time you must have had kayaking with a former teacher. His stories sound very interesting, and I'm sure made the trip that much more pleasant. Your 70 deg. weather sounds heavenly. We are in the 50's. Nice sweater weather:sheep: Your weight room sounds really nice. I bet you can't wait until you get all your equipment. I hope that you found some time to develop some of your film. You sound very busy!!!
judi, that's good you are keeping within your point range. Yesterday I went a little overboard, but not too..too..bad, I spent 8 points on wine :yikes: It tasted really good. Today I am making it up. I made this great 0 point veg. soup which I had for lunch today and I will have it for the rest of the week, and it's a low point dinner tonight. Enjoy your Thanksgiving tomorrow with your family. Lacee gives Marley & Bentley a great big LICK!
Take care and enjoy the rest of the day.

Hey there. It was a quiet weekend at my house and now it's Mon. morning and I'm thinking of all the things I SHOULD have done. Anyway, judi, I'm busy but many things are skipped. House cleaning at the top of that list.
Happy Holiday to you Judi. And Alice, I guess the summer people are gone today. Enjoy the peace and quiet. My little resort town is hopping this week, we have an annual documentary film festival which has grown quite popular here. I hope to spend some time at the theatre this week.
I hope you all have a good week.

I had my weigh in earlier this morning. I lost 3/4 lb. I was hoping for a total of 5 lb. loss, but it wasn't to be. Next week for sure (I hope). I seem to be averaging 1 lb. a week, and that's ok. At least it's coming off.
It was around 27 deg. this morning BRRRRR. I had frost on my windshield when I went out. It's only supposed to be in the 50's today, but it has away to go before it hits 50. Tomorrow they are saying we are to get a regular Nor'easter with wind swept rain.
Yes, ledom, the summer people have gone.
:cb: :dancer:  We will have the leaf peepers next, but they are just usually driving through. It is nice and quiet though.
That film festival sounds fun. I hope you get to enjoy it.
How was your Thanksgiving, judi? Hope you all had a great time.
Take care and have a great day.

Alice, that is a good weight loss...:smug: A pat on the back for you!
Well, I am IN my point range after thansgiving ONLY because I borrowed from two days in advance...I hate doing that because what happens is I starve on those days...like tonight...no supper, just a diet pepsi. But I really don't want to go over the weeks total as you know. On thanksgiving I wanted to have chocolate and well those points have to come from somewhere:?: Thanksgiving was nice.
Ooooh a documentary film festival...that is what I would like.
Today is very bright and warm, almost like summer.
How are you doing without Cokes Ledom?
8 points on wine, hmmmm...that is what I could use right now. But I will forgo:T It was one of those "Prozac" type of days.
Gosh tomorrow is midweek already...have a good Wednesday all!

judi - I'm over diet coke. Today I was thinking about telling my friend/boss that I had quit drinking D.C., but something held me back. I guess I just didn't want to make a big deal about it, but 2 1/2 weeks diet coke free. A plus, I have about $10 left in my purse at the end of the week that I wouldn't have otherwise because I am not hitting the vending machine during the day.
The more I read about the BFL lifestyle the more interesting it gets. People say that around the 10th to 12th week of the challenge is when you can expect to see a noticeable difference. I am still feeling patient with it. I am not dropping a lot of lbs., I am getting stronger and I think I notice having more energy as well.
Alice - 1/2 is a good loss, especially following a week when you lost 2 1/2 if I remember correctly.
I wore my new leather jacket today and love it as much as I thought I did when I bought it.
Well, time to get some rest.

DH & I are off on a trip to Vermont in a little while, but wanted to say "Hi"!
ledom, YAY for you on the DC:cp: That's quite an accomplishment.
I'm glad that the BFL is still going great for you. I'm sure the reason you haven't lost a lot of lbs. is that your building muscle. How is the pant o meter?
judi, we were told that if you don't use all your banked points within a week, and you are allowed up to 10 banked points per week, anything over that you lose. Sorry you had to borrow some points, but I would think it was worth it, as it was something very special. When I have gone way over my points, the next day I eat very light, having low point meals. I have made a 0 point soup that I have a lot with a few low fat crackers...1 pt. for 6 crackers. You must be starving only having diet coke. Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving.
Well...it's getting late...Miz Lacee knows she's going for a ride and she's:hyper: The "boss" has spoken...so to speak.
Take care and enjoy the day.

judi, I wish you were here to see the film festival. I have been enjoying it, not getting to spend as much time at it as I would like. But enough to really be enjoying it.
Alice, hope you have a good trip today.
The pantometer is fine though I'll be happy when I see them looser. BUT, let me say this - I definitely feel my body composition changing. I see glimpses of muscle not there before and I am revved. I know this is going to work. I am finding it really easy to stick with the food plan, if anything I have trouble getting it all in. There is no hunger and the concept of free day is very liberating. All in all I am happy, I think patience is the key here. It does take a major commitment to adopt a new lifestyle for anyone that might be considering this plan. Oh, back to the pantometer. I was getting where there were certain things in my closet I just didn't want to put on after a bad few months. Everything still fastening, but not hanging well - the biggest difference I see is that things are beginning to feel more comfortable. Nothing falliing off me yet though. I am in the middle of the 3rd of 12 weeks of my challenge now.

Had a great trip to Vt yesterday. The color was very beautiful. We saw the most awe inspiring sight. We were coming out of one place and we saw hundreds of geese flying north, I think they were heading in your direction, judi, there must have been 4 or 5 formations. The air was so still, and all you could hear were the geese. I have never seen anything like it, and I probably will never see it again, although I hope I do sometime.
ledom, that's wonderful you are so enthusiastic about BFL. It's very motivating to see your body changing. Keep up the good work. Your pants will be hanging on you soon.
I was just thinking, how we all were in a slump in the dieting dept. and how something "clicked" in each of us around the same time. I guess great minds do think alike:smug:
judi, hope you are having a good week.
Have a great day.
ledom

Alice, that is so cool about the geese. I just love stuff like that.
judi, DH must be keeping you busy now that he's home - we haven't heard from you in a couple of days.
I'll be doing a 2 hr. drive today and hope to see some pretty scenery. The leaves are just starting to change and it is brilliant sunny, cold day. I'm looking forward to it.
Oh yeah, the cats are so frisky now. They have been wrestliing and running through the house like wild animals. They like the cool weather too.

Hi! We unexpectedly have to leave a week early on our Ca. trip so I have been washing and packing stuff for the bus. Wheww! We are leaving tomorrow. Then today I went and saw the dr., the dentist and had a flu shot...sheesh, upkeep..boring but essential.
Your trip to Vermont sounded lovely Alice. I love seeing the geese too. When I was growing up they would fly over in an enormous V, honking away it was SO cool. I don't see them in big groups like that here, in BC they fly over in smaller groups and some hang around all year in the parks. But I grew up in Saskatchewan and I guess they came from way up north. It was always such an event to see them.
It is sunny here, just like summer but I am sure it will change so it will be good to be going to the US.
Glad you are enjoying your new jacket Ledom...it is so nice to find something that is just "You" isn't it??? Right now I have a black Irish wool and cashmere walking cape that I love. I bought it last year from "Signals" and didn't wear until this year.
Good for you on the BFL Ledom. It sounds exciting! You are over Coke...now that is both an accomplishment and an austerity...good for you.
How is point counting going Alice? It is good I think because it lets one eat whatever and so there is no reason to feel deprived. Like today, I was just in that fast food frame of mind and had a veggie burger, small fries and egg mcmuffin sans meat all from McDonalds...it was great. Of course, it meant tonight all I had for supper were two small V-8 juices.
I bought a scale for the RV so I won't get lax. Going to weigh tomorrow.
Yes, it is kind of neat how things all clicked for all 3 of us at the same time. I agree, it has to be that "great mind" thing, no doubt about it.
I will email you from the road:cool: And a big smooch to all the pets...Marley stinks like a ferret, (no disprespect to ferret owners...Charles Dickens said it first about someone's baby) I hope the DH is going to wash him before he goes on the trip...I don't like the thought of him snuggling under the covers with me...Marley, not the DH!

10-18-2002, 07:34 AM
judi, have a great time in Ca. How long will you be gone? Hope to hear from you while you're gone. Also hope Marley got his bath;) Yes, I think point counting is good. The WOE I was on previously, I had to give up certain foods, and when I started counting points, I was like a kid in a candy store eating the once forbidden food. I do have to stop eating certain things, like processed foods, and go back to following my old program very loosely....eating real food again and not eating so many carbs. How did your weigh in go?
How was your road trip, ledom? Do you have much color? The color is rather spotty here. Some areas have fantastic colors, while other areas are still mostly green. I think our lack of rain and the warmer than normal temps. are to blame.
My GF & I had our weekly lunch date. After lunch we went to the movies and saw "Sweet Home Alabama". It was awfully good. I had seen the previews on TV and wasn't sure what to expect. But, both of us thorougly enjoyed it.
Take care and have a good day.

Yeah Judi - I hope you can check in. We'll miss you. Have a good trip.
Alice, sounds as if the leaves are about the same down here. My drive was beautiful as I was driving through an unpopulated area. Only regret was that the butterflies seem to be migrating and the water I passed was mirror smooth. It would have been ideal for kayaking. Gotta get out soon!
6:10 and my workout is DONE! That is a great feeling. This morning was upper body. 3 mornings a week I do weights which takes just under an hour and 3 mornings I walk/jog for 20 minutes. No point counting on this diet! I eat lots of food but it is prescribed. A protein and a carb at every meal and veggies any meal I want them. It is very much routine and doesn't leave room for treats except blessed FREE DAY!
I'm having people over for dinner tomorrow. I made chili last night to serve. Lots of housework needs to be done between now and then.
D went to see Sweet Home Alabama yesterday too!

Yesterday I put on a pair of jeans that I've been wearing occasionally, and they felt very funny. I looked in the mirror and they were BAGGY!!!! Then I rummaged through my closet and found a pair of jeans that with a struggle could get on, and once on I couldn't breathe. They went right on and I could BREATHE!:cloud9:
I was watching Oprah yesterday afternoon and thought of you, ledom. She was doing an update from a previous show with her trainer, Bob Greene, of Get With the Program, and the people who did his program. It was all about weight training. From what he was saying, that is the secret to losing weight. The women she had on looked fabulous. I would try weight training, but I'm afraid I'll get bored with all the repetition. Is that your routine, 3 mornings of weight lifting, and 3 mornings of walk/jog for 20 min.? What does your body building routine consist of? Thanks, any help would be appreciated.
That's great you got your workout done early. Good for you! I am letting my breakfast settle before I do my walking tape.
Did your D like Sweet Home Alabama?
Have a great time at your dinner party.
Have a great Saturday.

10-19-2002, 10:19 AM
Whoa Nellie - that is GREAT about your loose fitting clothes. I am just dying for that to happen to me! Big pat on the back for you Alice!!!!
Let me tell you about my routines. First off I am following Bill Phillips book Body for Life. I love the subtitle which started to sink in for me about a week after I started. 12 weeks to Mental and Physical Strength - the physical is obvious, the mental is a huge bonus I am finding. Anyway, during the week you hit every major muscle group. This is what I did last week:
Sun. - Cardio
Mon. - UB, Chest, Shoulders, Back, Triceps, Biceps
Tues. - Cardio
Wed. - LB, Quads, Hamstrings, Abs, (I leave out calves because my calves are muscular and tend to get really big muscle really fast)
Thurs. - Cardio
Fri. - Upper Body again
Sat. - FREE DAY
Next week I'll hit the lower body twice and the upper body only once. And the kicker, you do 5 sets of each exercise with weight as heavy as you can manage, "to failure" they call it. First day sucked and every day after that it has been a good experience.
Is it boring? Sometimes, and that is where the mental strength comes in. But sometimes it is fun. I do recommend the book before starting, you should read and decide if you want to make the commitment because it is a radical change in diet and exercise, at least it was for me. I have total faith that if one follows the diet they will succeed on this program. For some reason I have been totally true and faithful to the diet. Two things really help me with the diet psychologicaly. The free day and the fact that it is a 12 week program. After 12 weeks one week of rest is prescribed. This fits my dieting lifestyle because I have often started and been very successful with various programs to just peter out after a while and then just to be burdened with guilt at that point and never get my momentum back. Not through careful planning, but through sheer coincidence, I will finish 12 weeks the week before christmas which will be perfect for me. I plan to take a month off while D is home. I don't plan to go hog wild and I plan to do lots of hiking and kayaking that month so I don't lose any progress. In Jan. I'll start challenge 2.
Alice, there is so much information about this diet on the BFL thread here that is so much more informed than me if you are interested in looking into it.
Oh yeah, the other thing. I think I have lost 8 lbs. since starting and 6 lbs. was water weight the first week so if you are looking for changes on the scale you might be disappointed. From comments I have read, you don't tend to loose a lot of weight until significant muscle is built and as we know that muscle is heavier. They pantometer is the way to go. Some folks have their lean body mass weighed but I don't know where to go for that. I'll say that despite the stubbor scale I defintely can tell a difference in the way I look.
I read that Oprah said recently that she has gotten her weight down this time by using weights. Honestly, I don't think she has ever looked better either. She isn't as small, but she looks very healthy and tight and toned.
Yes, D loved Sweet Home Alabama. If I can find time I may go, more likely I'll rent and watch at home.

Thank you for all the info. Actually, I was thinking more in the line of still doing WW, as counting points is very simple for me to do, but adding weight training as part of my exercise routine on the days I don't do cardio, and thought BFL would give me a good guide line to start. I read somewhere that weight training is better than cardio for losing weight. Oprah's show really inspired me to try weight training. She does look fabulous, very healthy and not too skinny. The walking tapes I am doing now have 2-2 lb. weighted balls that I use. Starting Mon. I will start my weight training. I think I will send for the BFL book.
That's fantastic losing 8 lb. Congratulations!!! I remember once when I was losing weight (one of my many..many tries), the Dr. I was seeing at the time told me that what counts most is inches lost. Keep up the good work. (pat..pat..pat..)
ledom

I think you'll enjoy the book Alice. I think adding weights to what you are doing is a good idea. Just keep it all in perspective - I don't know that it will effect how quickly you lose weight but it might slow the scale down a bit. There are so many benefits to strength training. It makes your bones stronger, it makes your muscles lean, it makes YOU stonger. I also enjoy the challenge of seeing improvements in how much weight I can manage.
Hope you had a good weekend. I did. I had a birthday part for a friend at my house. It is so interesting - I served chili w/ all the trimmings, but sans the trimmings I will be able to eat leftover chili on the diet because I made it with very lean meat and only a little oil. I also made a huge citrus salad that we hardly made a dent in (I always make too much), that will also be good eating on the BFL plan. It was a lot of work getting ready, but now I have a lot of cooking done for the week. I sent b'day cake and the box of Godiva chocolates  someone brought as a hostess gift to college with D. I had time to eat 2 of them on free day so I am not totally deprived.
I am beginning week four of the challenge and I feel good to have gotten this far. I intend to go the distance on this one.
Oh yeah, you know all the hype about giving up diet coke and how I'm over it. Well physically, but twice last week in my dreams I had a diet coke. Isn't that something that it would be so important that it visits me in my subconcious!?! In both dreams I would have one and then it would come to me that I had made a committement to give it up and I would be so upset with myself!
On that note I'll sign off. Have a good day!

I haven't done...(or started) any exercises this morning. Yesterday I was outside getting my garden ready for winter:( , then raking all my clippings. I am rather sore... especially my back this am, so I've decided to relax my muscles a bit. I will start weight training tomorrow after I get back from my WW meeting.
I went into ivillage where I read an excerpt from Bill Phillips BFL book. The book said that you have different sets of weights, varying in weight, then you do 12 reps. of the smallest, 10 reps of a heavier one...and so on..and so on. Is that right? At the moment, I have a toning cord attatched to a bar that I can sit in a chair with my cord underneath my feet and do a series of arm exercises, plus an abdominal exercise.
Glad your party was a success. Your chili sounds delicious. That is one of my favorite things to eat. Since you have so much leftover you can relax when you come home from work and not have a meal to prepare.
My weekend was good. Sat. DH went away for most of the day, so Lacee & I had the day to ourselves. Which was nice. Then on Sun. we went down to our cabin and closed up for the season.
WOW!!! Those DC dreams are something else, especially having 2 of them in 1 week!! Do you think your subconscious is trying to tell you something? :)
Take care and have a good day.

Morning - Alice, I think our leaves changed color overnight. Yesterday I noticed that they were just brilliant. We have had a couple weeks of below normal temps. and some rain. I guess that is what did it.
Not much new here. Just work, work, and more work. I DID purchase my new weight bench last night. It will be delivered evening this week.
Hope you have a great day.

I love what mother nature does to trees in the fall. I noticed some of our trees are still pretty green and some have faded color. They are talking about *SNOW* tonight...can you believe it? They said we won't get much, just the higher elevations should get a dusting.
Had my weigh in this morning, I lost another 1 1/2 lb., making my total around 6 lb. I got my 5 lb. sticker this morning.
After I post I'm going to start my toning exercises..I'm not nearly sore today as I was yesterday.
Don't work too hard....and have a great day.

Hey alice *Big Pat on the Back* - you are really going to town with your weight watchers. Go girl, go! You must be feeling so pleased! I bought a new supplement last night that relieves soreness in muscles from working out. It is called glutamine. I'll let you know how it works.
aleka
10-22-2002, 12:10 PM
Yes, let me know how the glutamine works because I know I'll be a sore puppy after doing my arm exercises, since I do have some sort of muscle problem in my left shoulder that kicks up occasionally.
Yes, I am pleased that I'm finally losing weight. But, come to think of it, I was more excited, actually, by the *pant-o-meter*.:)
ledom
10-23-2002, 08:15 AM
Good morning, Yeah, the pant-o-meter is the best.
Hey judi girl, where are you? Hope you are having a good trip.
Just finished my UB workout. I am getting stronger, I sure didn't want to get up this morning but once I got into the exercises it was OK. One of the finer points of BFL that I didn't catch right away is that you workout after the overnight fast, or wait 3 hrs. after eating if you have to exercise later in the day. Then, you wait 1 hr. before eating breakfast (this is what I didn't catch at first). My routine is so different now. After a quick computer break and water, I'll shower, dress for work and then have breakfast. For years I have thought that I could not do one thing without eating first thing when I wake up. But I can, I am finding.
A busy day ahead, but tomorrow I get to be busy at home which I am sure will include a nap. Have a great day.

Yes, we are having snow already. We are just on the northern edge and we only have a dusting. South of us got the brunt of it and there are all sorts of accidents, because everyone has forgotten how to drive in the snow. A rude awakening to say the least! It looks like a winter wonderland the farther south you go. That's ok...they can have it:s:
Glad you are getting stronger, and able to adapt to a new routine, ledom.
Naps are wonderful aren't they?
Have a good day.

By the time I got home they were sure they caught the right guys. I too am very happy they caught them. I'm sure the people around the Wahington/MD/VA area are very relieved.

First of all ... you girls are doing so good! CONGRATS on your sticker and baggy jeans Alice and you Ledom with your programme...WOW!!!:bravo: :bravo: You are TWO amazing girls!
Guess who has a kitty??? Moi....there was a tiny cat abandoned...I bet it is barely 6 weeks old. The person at the RV park thinks he was dumped off. He is black, with white collar and four white (HUGE) feet. He is very small but the size of his feet show he has a potential to be a big cat. So we have adopted him. Can you think of a name for him???? It has to be something Spanish. Marley tried to kill him when we first brought him in but now they are buddies. I think he will be able to cope much better with a cat than another dog.
I put in my 4th week entry into my diet journal this morning and I almost can't believe it. I have lost 17 pounds this month! I am now down to my next lower point range...first time ever. I am so encouraged by it.
The weather out here in the desert is very cool, I bought one of those Vellux blankets to put under our comforter. It looks like we will be here for another week. We have brought my car along so I have done a bit of Christmas shopping going out and about on my own.
I have to sign off because we are at the DH's work and I can't stay long. Our computer doesn't get internet in the RV.
Keep up the good fight!:goodvibes :grouphug:

YAY JUDI.......17 lbs gone. Way to go WAHOO!!!:bravo: :high: Keep it up!! You must be on:cloud9: That is so neat you adopting an abandoned kitty. He will certainly have a good home. I have to admit, I don't know how to speak Spanish in the least bit. I do know that friends our our's have adopted 2 dogs from the pound that came from Puerto Rico. One's name was Cisco, unfortunately they didn't have him very long, and the one they have now is Pepe. You will come up with a name. Glad Marley and the kitty made friends with each other. I wish you many..many..many..good years with your new "son". It's nice to hear from you and that you're having a good time on your trip.
ledom, enjoy your free day! I'm glad you are doing so well and are so enthusiastic.
Somehow I think I have gotten one of those miserable little colds one gets occasionally. The jury isn't out yet, as it could be my sinuses too. I guess time will tell.
I mentioned that I gave a friend a ride to the hosp. yesterday. When we got to the hosp. an helocopter (sp?) landed at the emergency entrance to air lift someone to another hospital. We did have some time before she had to be inside so we watched some of it. It was really something to see with a fire truck and EMT's there just in case it couldn't land. We didn't get to see the whole thing because it was getting rather late and we both were freezing.
Take care and enjoy your Sat.

I'm so glad you have a kitty baby judi. He sounds adorable. Montoya - not sure if I spelled than right? That's my best suggestion - I'm sure you'll come up w/ the perfect name.
Now Judi - 17 lbs. :dizzy: , that is fantastic! I am so pleased for you! I know you are feeling great about it.
I have developed a new routine for Friday nights. I have several skirts and pants I try on to test out the pant-o-meter. I AM makeing visible progress, even though at this point only visible to me.
Alice - hope this cold is VERY minor. It is no fun to get sick. Try to get lots of rest and maybe it'll decide to not stick around.
